awaits on A1A phone tour BY SARAH A. HENDERSON

here’s a colorful new roadway sign in town, and it represents some of the best kept secrets of Ponte Vedra’s stretch of State Road A1A. The sign, adorned with a rosette spoonbill, hails from the Friends of A1A, an organization that, among other initiatives, has implemented a cell phone audio tour for area A1A drivers. This free tour — although standard cell phone fees apply — tells listeners historic tales of several Ponte Vedra landmarks and beyond. All landmarks are points of interest on the A1A Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway, which runs from Ponte Vedra Beach to Flagler Beach. “It’s a treasure hunt in your own backyard, basically,” said Sallie O’Hara, program administrator for Friends of A1A. Via the audio tour, listeners at Ponte Vedra stops will learn that Mickler’s Landing was the site of a German U-boat landing of enemy soldiers June 16, 1942. You’ll also learn that Bird Island Park is contains a maze of vegetation in the shape of a sea turtle. And did you know that the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve area has been home to people for at least the last 6,000 years? Two pre-recorded tour guides will share those stories dozens more as you make scenic stops along a stretch of highway considered one of the most scenic in the country. The byway itself is 72 miles and meanders through nature preserves, historic sites, cities and residential areas. According the Friends of A1A website, 45 landmarks make up the tour. More stops are planned to be added. As instructed by the tour guides,

8 GET CONNECTED 2012

listeners can type in the landmark code located on a sign marker at each location. That code number will prompt the guides to share information on that particular landmark. There is no need move through the tour from the beginning, and you can start or end the tour at any time, all depending on the landmark where you’ve stopped. As stated on the Friends of A1A website, the tour is not intended for listening and driving simultaneously due to safety concerns. Besides Mickler Landing, Bird Island Park and the Guana Reserve in Ponte Vedra, other particularly interesting lesser-known sites highlighted via the audio tour include Surfside Park, the Whitney Laboratory and Beverly Beach, stops 151, 350 and 425, respectively. The tour also include information on big-name stops such as Castillo de San Marcos, Marineland and the Bridge of Lions. O’Hara said the whole idea behind the free audio tour is to help both locals and out-of-town visitors appreciate the historic coast of Florida that A1A runs along. “We need to educate the visitors to maintain and preserve what we have,” she said. Friends of A1A is a non-profit, volunteer-led organization that works to protect and promote the natural, historic and cultural features of the A1A Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway. For a map with landmark codes of the organization’s audio tour at (904) 5960029, visit the Friends of A1A website, www.scenica1a.org.

Fishing includes surf fishing in the Atlantic Ocean for whiting, pompano and bluefish; estuary fishing at Guana Dam or Shell Bluff Landing for redfish, spotted seatrout, flounder and black drum; freshwater fishing, via boat, in the northern portion of Guana Lake. ven life in a small coastal town can get hectic. Working moms. Commuters. Even retirees and high school kids tend to have busy schedules these

days. That’s why it’s all the more important to make time for reflection and appreciation of the First Coast. Depending on what time of the day or year you visit the park, you’ll have a different experience. Pink sunset or clear blue

These are elemants that many regard as quintessential pieces of life in Ponte Vedra — and Bird Island Park gathers them all in one spot. The park is stocked with native plants and packed with painstakingly rendered architectural details. Images of gators, turtles, raccoons — and of course, birds — are hiding almost everwhere you look. In benches, play equipment, even the boardwalk. Although the park follows an organic design, it’s clear that nothing about the

tion through the hard work of those who wanted to see it succeed said Mary Watson, vice chair of the Bird Island Park Board of Directors. Watson was on hand in February for an art opening reception featuring a wine and cheese tasting at the Ponte Vedra Library for the wildlife photography of Craig O’Neal. The gathering featured O’Neal’s wildlife photography, which has been pubslihed in Discovery magazine, featured on the Travel Channel and used by many instutitions such as UF, UNF, the State of Florida and the State of Georgia. O’Neal cites the park as one of his favorite places to capture photoraphy, and he has also done work with children at the library to get them involved in the park and wildlife photography. Current features of Bird Island Park include a freshwater marsh and pond, an island rookery, an upland hammock and a coastal dune. Other manmade features include a sea turtle maze which will grow more impressive as the plants that make it up grow, a storytelling area featuring nature mosaics and a children’s interactive play area. To truly appreciate it though, you cannot rely on words and images. You must visit this park! Bird Island Park promotes the use of native plants to preserve wildlife habitats, and serves as a migratory site on the Great Florida Birding Trail. On the first Wednesday of every month, the board of directors, a number of master gardeners and other volunteers visit to weed and tend for the garden. Bird Island Park is a rare resource right in your back yard. It’s easy to get involved, and even easier to make a tax deductible donation.

Phase 3, the final phase of the park, will cost approximately $300,000. The money will go to complete the boardwalk circling the pond, marsh and island rookery. This will double the available wildlife viewing area. For more information or to donate, visit birdislandpark.com. Bird Island Park is located just south of the Ponte Vedra Beach library off of A1A and has its own roundabout and parking connected to the library parking lot. kelly@opcfla.com (904) 686-3943

actually get to leave the office sometimes and look around my community. I recently took a field trip to St. Augustine and was able to take advantage of the ample sunshine as I walked

around the city. All throughout grammar school, junior high and high school, I lived in Neptune Beach. Therefore, like many of your children today, I have taken many a field trip to St. Augustine. We always visited the Fort—of course. It is not to be missed with its formidable coquina walls, costumed historical re-enacters and striking views. We also always visited The Old School House. Took tours of Flagler. But one place we always neglected to visit on these field trips was the Lightner Museum. Last week, I remedied that. When you walk into the Lightner, perhaps it won’t strike you as a place for children. But just a few steps away from the ornate Victoriana at the entrance, you find yourself face to face with a huge, roaring stuffed lion. When I agreed to visit the Lightner and meet with its executive director, Bob Harper, I was expecting to walk through room upon room of ornate art leftovers from the Victorian age. Instead I found myself in a room with a clam shell big enough to sit comfortably in, a large alligator hanging from the ceiling and a shrunken head. Indeed, the Lightner does house an extensive Victorian art collection, but this is just one facet of this neighborhood jewel. As a child, I know it would’ve been impossible to drag me away from the first floor Victorian Science & Industry room. Huge fossils, taxidermied fauna and even an Egyptian mummy… on Friday I found myself wondering why on earth no field trip had brought

me here sooner. At the front desk, children will find age appropriate scavenger hunts that could help an eager parent or babysitter guide younger attendees through to some of the other areas of the museum. In the three floors open to the public there are displays of incredible stained glass, one-of-a-kind furniture, well-preserved clothing and jewelry and mechanized instruments. While you’re there, you can have lunch at the bottom of the old hotel’s swimming pool, hear a concert played on 19th Century instruments and feed the colossal koi fish swimming peacefully in front of the museum. Ripley’s Believe it or Not, eat your heart out. The Lightner is free to St. Johns County residents, making it a natural destination during your visit to St. Augustine. The scavenger hunt for kids is also free. Your tour of the museum is self-guided and self-paced. There’s a wealth of information about the Lightner online at lightnermuseum.org — or you can call for more info at (904) 824-2874. The museum is open from 9 to 5 daily, except for First Friday Artwalk nights when it stays open late. The museum is located right across the street from Flagler College at 75 King Street in historic downtown St. Augustine. I hope I can convince you to hop onto A1A for a scenic drive down to St. Augustine and a tour of the Lightener. Say hello to the lion for me. kelly@opcfla.com (904) 686-3941

es we Khan!” the crowd of almost 7,000 fans chanted as new owner Shahid Khan made his way to the stage during the impromptu Ready To Rise Rally, a kickoff celebration held at Everbank Field on January 17, 2012, to signify the rebirth of Jacksonville’s main attraction. A slew of “Khan puns” followed thereafter, including “It’s Khantagious,” ”Khan you dig it?”, and “Yell as loud as you Khan!”, as well as a crowd pleasing mustache “Khantest.” Ready To Rise was hosted by former offensive tackle and the first Jaguars player to be inducted into the Pride of the Jaguars Hall of Fame, Tony Boselli. “Once you’re a Jaguar, you’re always a Jaguar,” he proclaimed as he addressed the excited hopefuls. The Rise celebration opened with fan submitted videos welcoming both Khan and new head coach Mike Mularkey to Jacksonville. Filled with memorable and clever messages for the city’s most cherished treasure, including a creative “blood, sweat and teal”

reference, each video showcased on the stadium’s maximized HD screens was a testament to the strong support system the Jaguars have acquired over their 19 year existence. After performances from the D-Line FEEL THE BEAT Drummers and ROAR cheerleaders, a few key players who gave it their all on the field every Sunday were introduced, including cornerback Derek Cox (No. 21), fullback Greg Jones (33), tight end Zach Miller (86), and special teams ace Montell Owens (24), who urged the attentive and optimistic fans situated near the Bud Zone end of the stadium not to despise small beginnings. Boselli then offered fans a recap of the highlights from last season, most notably Maurice Jones-Drew’s accomplishment of securing the NFL rushing title and breaking the franchise’s single-season rushing record with a final tally of 1,606 yards. Unfortunately, the Jaguars ended the 2011 season with a losing record of 5-11, barely escaping a repeat of their worst franchise finish (4-12) during the team’s inaugural year.

Last season’s turbulent changes proved to be a challenge for the young and inexperienced squad of ambitious players. Former quarterback David Garrard was abruptly released a week before the regular season was scheduled to begin. His replacement, rookie Blaine Gabbert, was rushed into the leadership role and led the Jaguars to a mere 3-8 start, which resulted in Jack Del Rio being ousted with just five games remaining in the season. On the same day that Del Rio’s departure was announced, news that the team would be sold to Pakistani-born businessman Shahid Khan began to spread, along with speculation that the Jaguars would not remain in Jacksonville. Khan put every rumor to rest when it was his turn to speak at the Rise Rally. “Jacksonville, I’m all in … We’re going to have a lot of fun together and we’re going to win together,” he promised. Fans cheered in excitement as he smiled from ear to ear, stretching the corners of his risingly popular mustache. “I’m absolutely with every fiber of my body committed to putting a winner and a Super Bowl right here in Jacksonville,” he continued. Jaguars general manager Gene Smith shared his sentiments by expressing his admiration for Mularkey. “This guy knows offense and he knows how to assemble a strong staff,” Smith said. “Going through the head coach search, there were certain things Mr. Khan and I were looking for. I truly believe Mike Mularkey has all the traits you look for in a leader, starting with the first thing, integrity.” On Jan. 10, 2012, Mularkey was officially offered the Jaguars

head coaching position. “I’m really excited to be a part of this organization. I’m excited about being a part of this community and I’m really excited about being home,” he openly told the crowd at the rally. Mularkey is a Miami native who played quarterback in high school and went on to attend the University of Florida. He was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 1983 and played nine years in the NFL at the tight end position. His 18-year coaching experience and titles include: offensive and defensive quality control coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, tight end coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers, head coach of the Buffalo Bills for the 2004-05 season, and offensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons. During his eight years as an offensive coordinator, the majority of Mularkey’s teams advanced to the playoffs. Additionally, Mularkey’s son Patrick has been a member of the Jaguars scouting staff for the past two years and will likely assist his father in a quest to immediately attack staff hiring. 24 GET CONNECTED 2012

The new head coach’s first ordered staff changes occurred when he promoted defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, who was welcomed with a standing ovation and cheers of “defense,” to assistant head coach and former Atlanta Falcons quarterback coach, Bob Bratkowski, to offensive coordinator. Tucker filled in as interim head coach after Del Rio’s sudden exit and supervised the team’s 2-3 finish. However, his previous efforts did not go unrecognized, as the Jaguars defense ended the season ranked No. 6 in the league overall. Mularkey defended his decision by declaring, “To the last play of the last game, Mel and this staff held this team together. That’s a credit to this staff and these players.” The Rise rally concluded with fan questions that were submitted via email and Facebook. The most common inquiry seemed to investigate the level of aggression surrounding the evolving staff, play calling and future free agency pursuits, specifically the acquisition of former Jaguars wide receiver Keenan McCardell who would be an undeniable asset in helping improve the team’s lackluster passing game.

Smith answered the repeated question with, “We will start with our players first. They’re the priority. There are some definite needs on this football team that I think most people are aware of, and we will be very aggressive in the process.” Mularkey added, “Teams should not want to step off the bus when they walk in this place when this thing is all said and done. … Deception is a big part of it, trying to make them guess what’s going to happen next, and running the football is obviously important with who we have.” As the Jaguars embark on a fresh start and prepare for their official rebirth, fans can only hope that these positive changes will lead to the success the team has been struggling to maintain over the years. It will surely be a “Khanspiracy” if they make the playoffs, and possibly even the Super Bowl next season. pvrecorder@opcfla.com (904) 285-8831

Ponte Vedra Dozens dare to take

POLAR PLUNGE

II

‘Polar Plunge’ in Nocatee

t was difficult to tell what was colder — the air temperature or the water. The Lagoon Pool of Nocatee’s Splash Water Park was a frigid 53 degrees Fahrenheit, or as 7-year-old Luke Barry described it — “freezing.” But that didn’t stop Barry and approximately 80 other Ponte Vedra residents from taking the annual “polar plunge” in that chilly pool on Jan. 7 to ring in the New Year. The third annual Polar Plunge event began in 2012 when the park opened its gates to Nocatee residents at 8:30 a.m. Participants chose their spots by the pool and dressed down to their bathing suit of choice as they waited for the 9 a.m. countdown to the plunge to commence. Some dressed in summertime swimsuits and other in wet suits or pants and long-sleeved shirts, about 100-150 gathered for the event Saturday, said Rachel Robertson, Nocatee’s recreation coordinator. About 80 people of the crowd made the plunge, Robertson said. After the countdown from 10 at 9 a.m., plunge participants jumped off the pool deck — some more gingerly than others — and into the frigid pool water. The plunge was immediately followed by screams, with the majority of the plunge participants clamoring to the pool edge to get out as fast as possible. Post-plunge, Nocatee resident Paul Heald said participating in the daring event was worth it. “It was fun,” he said. “It’s wasn’t too bad. The initial shock was something.” Robertson said the event is designed to build community relationships. “Having an event to get all six (Nocatee) communities together is really important,” she said, “and it builds community moral. It’s really important to make [community residents] feel like they are part of something bigger.” In addition to the actual plunge, the event included a bathing suit contest and breakfast. The entire event was free to all Nocatee residents. The breakfast, which took place immediately following the plunge and contest, included pancakes, eggs, bacon, muffins, orange juice and coffee. Every participants of the bathing suit contest got a basket of Nocatee gear. Winners of the contest received a family pass to be used for a future Splash Water Park visit. The goal each year is for the event to grow and develop, said Robertson. This was the first year of the bathing suit contest. A more obvious difference between the 2012 and 2011 event, Robertson said, is that it was a bit warmer in 2011. “It is definitely colder this year,” she said. “The water last year was about 60 degrees.” But Robertson said she is glad the colder temperatures didn’t deter the participation of the dozens of residents who braved the icy waters Saturday — a fun way to mark the start of 2012. “It’s about making people feel they’ve accomplished something in the New Year, to start the year off strong,” Robertson said. “It’s not just jumping into a pool. — they’re accomplishing something.”
