Relief From Chronic Pain
I was having pain in my neck since my car accident in 2008. Dr. Hamer has made it possible for me to sit at work without pain; I can now go through my day without thinking about my neck pain. My over-all well-being has improved; I can better care for my clients and enjoy physical activities again! Dr. Hamer is not only skilled professional, but she is so pleasant to be around! - Aimee Green
Chronic pain has a way of creeping up and settling in, which was my experience. One day I finally said "enough" and despite the fact that I was skeptical of Chiropractors, I decided to give Dr. Hamer a try. Once I decided to completely follow Dr. Hamer's instructions, my new reality was that I no longer struggled daily with pain. It is such sweet joy to finally feel good after you have struggled with feeling really bad! Thank YOU Ponte Vedra Wellness Center! - Eileen Davenport

/NASSAU COUNTY COUNCIL ON AGING
www.nassaucountycoa.org/ The Nassau County Council on Aging's mission is to improve the lives of older adults with a special focus on those who
are vulnerable and disadvantaged. This is accomplished at Senior Life Centers and by providing vital programs and services as well as compassionate care designed to improve the health, independence and economic security of area seniors and their families. Founded in 1974 by local citizens, the Nassau County Council on Aging (NCCOA) is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization whose goal is to maintain and enrich the lives of older persons in Nassau County. NCCOA’s programs enable those age 60 and older to live independently at home while also providing opportunities for companioship and activities geared toward the needs of seniors. NCCOA is a resource for education, information, referral, counseling, and general assistance. They are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for elders and persons with disabilities through advocacy and services They cheerfully deliver critical services to Nassau County seniors in five major categories: Meals on Wheels, Home Health Services, NassauTRANSIT and Adult Day HealthCare. They also operate two Senior Life Centers: the East Nassau Center in Fernandina Beach and the West Nassau Center in Hilliard.

As part of a national network of area agencies established under regulations for the Area Agency on Aging, THEIR funding sources include federal, state and local grants (including The Department of Elder Affairs and the United Way), as well as donations from companies and individuals like you. All funds received are used to achieve the goals established by the NCCOA. In addition to providing services and opportunities to our area’s older citizens, the NCCOA also advocates in areas of legislation and services, and educating the community about aging issues and concerns. Staff consists of highly motivated professionals, but they could not accomplish their mission without the help of outstanding volunteers who sow “seeds of service," making the community a better place for seniors to live happy, healthy lives. The NCCOA also coordinates available funding and volunteer resources to maximize choices for older adults and persons with disabilities. In addition, the NCCOA provides valuable information and support for caregivers.

What is
Nocatee LIVING HERE 2016 47
It’s almost impossible to visit the First Coast without hearing the name Nocatee – and if you live here? Forget about it! But just what and where is Nocatee? Nocatee is a master-planned community in western Ponte Vedra Beach, which spans two counties: Duval and St. Johns. The vast majority of Nocatee, however, is situated in St. Johns County. It is located south of Jacksonville and north of St. Augustine on the east side of US-1. Nocatee is not a gated community, nor is it a separate city. It is a master-planned community with a variety of neighborhoods, a town center, a parkway, its own public schools and many other amenities. A master-planned community is a place where all of the community’s key elements are carefully planned and considered before the first shovel breaks ground. These communities aim to create an optimal mix of residential homes, businesses and parks. Some also include schools, churches and other community amenities. Master-planned communities emphasize variety, accessibility, amenities, green space and a sense of community. Nocatee is the third best-selling master-planned community in the United States. The PARC Group, Nocatee’s planners, first began the initial stages of envisioning the community in 1998. Stages of development included construction for infrastructure, setting aside a preserve, completing regional roadway improvements and setting aside land for schools, churches and fire stations. There are currently about 4,500 homes in Nocatee, with about 10,000 residents. There are six completed communities and 14 active communities.

Hurricane Preparedness on the First Coast The Atlantic hurricane season officially begins on June 1, 2016 and ends on November 30, 2016. Updated information can be found at the National Hurricane Center website as it becomes available, http://www.nhc. noaa.gov/
/DEVELOPING A FAMILY DISASTER PLAN A family disaster plan can keep residents safe and out of harm’s way in a severe weather event. Once your family develops and finalizes a plan, be sure to practice it frequently. A few things to consider when creating your own family emergency plan: - Discuss the type of hazards that could affect the family. Know the home’s vulnerability to storm surge, flooding, wind, and tornadoes. - Determine if the home is located in a storm surge evacuation zone. If so, know exactly where to go to reach safe shelter, and know how to get there. - If the home is located outside a storm surge evacuation zone, and the home is well constructed, its residents still need to have a hurricane plan. - Locate a safe room or the safest areas in the home for each hurricane hazard. Sometimes the safest areas may not be in the home, but within the community. - Determine escape routes from the home and a designated meeting place nearby. - Designate an out-of-state contact so all family members have a single point of contact. 52 LIVING HERE 2016
- Make a plan now for what to do with pets if the family needs to evacuate. Most hurricane shelters do not accept pets. - Post emergency telephone numbers. Make sure children know how and when to call 9-1-1. - Review insurance coverage – flood damage is not usually covered by homeowners insurance. - Stock non-perishable emergency supplies and a disaster supply kit. - Monitor a NOAA weather radio for official, real-time weather information. - Take First Aid, CPR, and disaster preparedness classes.
/HURRICANE SHELTER GUIDE In most cases, evacuation is the best option. But if this is not possible, one of the best ways to get prepared for hurricane season is by locating the evacuation shelters in your area.

/DUVAL COUNTY SHELTERS
Duval County has three types of evacuation shelters that may be opened during a disaster: General Population, Pet-Friendly and Special Needs. Shelters are a place of last resort. They will provide two basic necessities: shelter and food. Duval County has 27 evacuation
shelters. Most are located in schools. The seven shelters most likely to open during a disaster include: The Legends Center, LaVilla School of the Arts, Landmark Middle School (pet-friendly), Oceanway Elementary School, Chaffee Trail Elementary School, Chimney Lakes Elementary School (pet-friendly) and Atlantic Coast High School. Shelter openings will be announced on television, the radio and the internet. Only go to a shelter when it is announced the shelter is open. Special Needs Shelters in Duval County are designed to house those critically dependent on electricity for life support equipment, those who require constant medical observation (such as dementia/ Alzheimer’s patients), those who need assistance with medication, those whose medications are required to be refrigerated and those with cognitive disabilities. If you or someone else needs to be evacuated to a special needs shelter, Duval County requires you to pre-register every year. For more information about Duval
County evacuation shelters, to register for Special Needs Shelters or to pre-arrange for transportation to an evacuation shelter in the event of a disaster, visit www.jaxready.com or call (904) 630-CITY.
