Warren Curtis, left, and William Croft combined their law practices to focus on real estate closings but have since diversified to include personal injuries, family court, wills and defending workers’ compensation employee claims.
Curtis & Croft, LLC
Curtis & Croft combines resources to focus on closing real estate deals
A
fter graduating from law school in 1995, Warren Curtis served as a law clerk for the Honorable J. Ernest Kinard Jr. From there, he went to work with the Weinberg law firm in Sumter, eventually becoming a partner with M.M. “Rusty” Weinberg and Robert Brown. He initially focused his practice in the family courts, handling divorce and custody matters, but also began to develop a real estate practice, handling commercial and residential transactions. When William Croft graduated from law school in 1997, he spent almost five years as a prosecutor for the Third Judicial Circuit solicitor’s office, learning the ropes of how to try a case and manage the case outside of the courtroom. He credits former Solicitors Wade Kolb and Kelly Jackson with guiding him through that experience and providing him with the tools to transition to private practice. After leaving the solicitor’s office, he spent two years working for a firm in Charleston before
eventually moving back to his hometown of Sumter to branch out on his own. The two joined forces in 2007 to create Curtis & Croft LLC, focusing on real estate transactions, workers’ compensation claims, personal injury and other civil matters. In 2010, attorney William “Bill” Buxton joined the firm to assist with family court and probate matters. Each attorney has his own particular areas of focus. However, all of the attorneys handle real estate transactions and pride themselves on the ability to work around the schedules of their clients, even if outside of normal business hours. They also find time to stay involved in the community. Curtis serves on the Sumter CityCounty Board of zoning appeals. Croft is past president of Sumter Rotary Club and serves as chairman of the board of trustees for Wilson Hall. Buxton serves on the Historic Preservation Design Review Committee for downtown Sumter.

Dr. Tim Garrity
Live Oak Aesthetic and Family Dentistry
Family oriented dental practice feels less clinical and more like home
A
s you approach Live Oak Dentistry, you immediately notice that the business is aptly named. A massive, sprawling oak tree dominates the parking lot, and it is clear that the practice was built around this natural treasure. Dr. Tim Garrity says the tree is “supposedly 500 years old, according to two different arborists, so it’s survived through quite a bit.” Dr. Garrity has been practicing for 16 years, and most of his staff have been with him the entire time. This loyalty contributes to the comfortable atmosphere in the office. With beautiful crown molding, large windows, TVs and wood floors in the exam rooms, the whole place is like an HGTV dream. Dr. Garrity’s wife, Holly, did most of the interior decorating, and there’s no doubt it helps the business achieve its main goal of helping patients feel at home.

“My favorite part of the job is putting smiles on people’s faces,” Garrity says. “They are hurting, not happy, or scared when they come in, and we can turn that around.” Live Oak is mainly focused on being a family oriented practice, offering individual, one-on-one attention that many liken to the “old days.” Their services range from pediatric dentistry to crowns, veneers and other cosmetic or aesthetic procedures. They see many military patients and families as well. Dr. Garrity is calm and affable, the exact type of dentist you’d want for, say, a young child who might be afraid of the concept altogether. When asked to give a piece of advice to prospective patients, Garrity thinks they should “put away their preconceived notions” and give this simple yet modern practice a try.

Chip Bracalente
C. Anthony’s Menswear
Downtown menswear shop blends the classic with the eclectic
C
harles “Chip” Anthony Bracalente, owner of C. Anthony’s Menswear downtown, provides a different experience than large-chain clothing stores full of dizzying displays and dozens of racks to sort through. Here, it is less about the bottom line and more about what works for you. Chip has 32 years of experience, opened in 2005 and relocated his store to Liberty and Main streets in 2015. It is located within the Bank of Sumter building from 1913, and its history lives on in C. Anthony’s. For instance, the bank’s original vault now serves as an incredible walk-in shoe shop, which may be the most unique part of the store. However, that distinction is hard to make. Ask Chip what’s special about his store, and he will respond, “We are service minded.” Indeed, C. Anthony’s is also a mini-museum, showing off Chip’s collection of antiques, childhood toys, history books and family photos. There are shelves full of products such as custom-made jewelry and a full line of facial
products. The eclectic tie assortment is nothing short of fabulous. On display are mannequins ranging from wedding formal to sophisticated sportsman, and every detail is meticulously thought out. His small but dedicated staff which includes his wife, Zan, “help with what to wear to an interview or casual Friday and will even give advice on how to best pack a suitcase,” Chip says. Clients can sit down in a no-pressure environment and pick out fabric, buttons and styling for custom-made clothes. They also provide tuxedo rentals, and alteration turnaround is fast. According to Chip, “Miss Butler, who we call ‘Speedy,’ she can have alterations done while the customer waits or within hours. Mary is a large asset to our store’s customer service. ” You may come to C. Anthony’s for the custom services, but you will want to stay for the warm, personal atmosphere.

tarting your own company can be daunting, but for a Lee County man who has always liked being outdoors, it has proven rewarding. “Starting my own business is the best thing I’ve ever done and the most fulfilling thing I’ve ever done,” Kevin E. Ard said. “It’s wonderful to take an idea (and) to create something you can really be proud of.” The 38-year-old started the forest management KAFA Company LLC in June 2016, according to www.kafacompany.com. In a typical week, Ard said he might check on logging activities on a client’s land, handle administrative paperwork or money related to a tract of land and show some properties. When a client calls about forest management for his or her property, Ard said he reviews the goals and objectives for the land and then implements a plan to bring whatever that vision is to life. “Our job is to achieve their goals and objectives for their property,” he said. “Sometimes it is strictly financial, and sometimes it is about outdoor activities. paths and greenways. A private landowner can have that.” According to his website, Ard has a certified general appraiser license for South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia, has a certified forester designation from the Society of American Foresters and is an S.C. registered forester. Before founding his business, Ard worked for a “large forestland management and real estate firm focused in the Southeast,” according to his website. He has experience appraising farms and timberland and performing forestry services such as timber sales, property line designation, reforestation and wildlife enhancements. He has also been involved in land acquisitions from residential home sites to large tract purchases both as an adviser and an investor. “I’ve really loved every minute of it,” he said. “I’ve been at it a long time now, 18 years in February. Vince Johnson
The Sumter Item
New publisher will honor sixgeneration newspaper legacy, tap Sumter’s potential for growth
A
fter 123 years under the Osteen family, The Sumter Item is bringing in its first outside publisher. Vince Johnson may be young, but he has proven his talent during his 10 years with Morris Multimedia. After graduating cum laude from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, Johnson worked his way to the top through various publications, holding the positions of entry-level videographer, director of audio/video operations, chief multimedia officer and eventually publisher. Cumming, Georgia’s Forsyth County News, which Johnson published for three years, won 2016’s Mega-Innovation award for newspapers, which is judged by Harvard Business School. The fact that his 15-person staff beat out the likes of some of the largest media companies in the country put Johnson on the map as a digital leader, and he’s bringing that savvy to the Item. In his capacity as publisher, Vince will “more or less make sure business is working healthily,” but
beyond that, he wants to do some big things. Though the newspaper will still be the premiere product, Johnson says he wants to “transition into more than just a newspaper,” imagining “a fully functioning media company that has a lot more to offer citizens in the ways that people consume media.” Vince moved here with his wife, Brooke, and noticed that “downtown is being revitalized in a great way.” He is excited by what he sees in the area: a rich history, diverse demographics and “untapped potential.” While he says to “expect video content on the website that will be available on mobile phones and social media,” he is well aware that “people still like to read their papers with their morning cup of coffee, and they are very important, too.” Vince Johnson has known the Osteens for several years, and as he moves forward with changes at the Item, he says theirs is “a legacy worth maintaining.”

Developer Nena Bruffey with Agent Donald Paquette outside of The Azalea model home.
Deercreek At Wyboo
Litchfield Co. moves inland to fishing and golf community off Lake Marion
T
he Litchfield Co., famous for real estate along the coast, has opened a satellite office in lake country. Deercreek At Wyboo, a gated resort community in Clarendon County, surrounds Wyboo Golf Club and is across the street from the newly reopened Players Course. However, as developer Nena Bruffey puts it, “You don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy living on a golf course.” With homes currently selling in the low 200s, Deercreek has something to offer everyone at an affordable price. “The logical market would be those looking for a second home,” Nena says, “but millennials and baby boomers are actually looking for the exact same house.” Located within several miles of schools and 40 miles of Shaw Air Force Base, Deercreek is perfect for young families and within the commutes of many soldiers in the Sumter area. With a pool, sidewalk-lined streets, an EMS station, a café and
a bank, residents enjoy plenty of amenities within their own neighborhood. Bruffey expects that Deercreek will eventually expand to more than 300 homes, depending on the market. Current models feature three bedrooms and two bathrooms, open floor plans and two-car garages with an extra golf cart bay that could also be used for other small vehicles. Bruffey says that the residents who don’t play golf “just love the beautiful landscaping and relaxed atmosphere.” Indeed, the area has much more to offer than gorgeous greens. Deercreek boasts proximity to Santee National Wildlife Refuge and world-class fishing opportunities. “Wyboo” is derived from the Sioux word meaning “big water,” which is apt for property off Lake Marion, the largest lake in South Carolina. If you have a boat, you can keep it at J&J Marina, which works with Deercreek, and utilize the water route that leads all the way out to the Charleston coast.
