SHAW AIR FORCE BASE
ince its beginning on June 27, 1941, Shaw Field, now Shaw Air Force Base, has seen numerous changes of both its mission and its aircraft. It has served as a training field, a reconnaissance site and, finally, a fighter wing. The idea for Sumter land being used for a military training field was launched by Sumter businessman William Thompson. According to 20th Fighter Wing Historian Alejandro Lujan, Thompson was secretary of the Chamber of Commerce at the time. “Thompson, with the help of some other businessmen, got the paperwork together, ran it through the wickets and got the government to come look at Sumter,” said Lujan. Sumter’s temperate climate was one of the deciding factors. After considering three Sumter sites, the United States government decided that the land then owned by the Benenhaley family would be a good spot for a training field for pilots. Construction began at Shaw Field on June 27, 1941. Lt. Col. Burton M. Covey Jr. became the first base commander on Aug. 30, 1941. For about a year when new cadets were training here, an overflow of German prisoners of war from Fort Jackson in Columbia were housed at Shaw. 10 SHAW AIR FORCE BASE
By the last part of 1951, the 20th Fighter Bomber Wing transferred to Langley Air Force Base,Va. In 1981, The 363rd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing was inactivated and the 363rd Tactical Fighter Wing was activated. By 1990, the 363rd TFW was among the first F-16 squadrons to deploy to the United Arab Emirates in Operation Desert Shield. Acting at Al Dhafra Air Base, the wing flew combat missions along with two wings from Germany. On the last day of 1993, the 363rd Tactical Fighter Wing was inactivated. The next day, Jan. 1, 1994, the 20th Fighter Wing was activated at Shaw. When Covey became commander in 1941, Shaw’s purpose was to train cadets to fly. Shaw was named for Lt. Erwin David Shaw, a Sumter native who was one of the first Americans to fly combat missions in World War I. After three enemy aircraft attacked his plane as he was returning from a reconnaissance mission, he died – but not before downing one of his attackers. As a field for training cadets, Shaw saw its first group enter training on Dec. 15, 1941; the last basic class graduated on March 9, 1945. During those four years, more than 8,600 cadets trained to fly AT-6s and AT-10s. When the mission changed, pilots started coming to Shaw for fighter transition training
until the end of the war. P-47 Thunderbolts arrived to replace the basic trainers. During World War II, Shaw Field served, for a brief time, as a prisoner of war camp. German soldiers were bunked near Shaw’s main entrance and worked on nearby farms. The first German POWs arrived on March 1, 1945, and all had departed by early 1946. After World War II, the 20th Fighter Bomber group arrived with one type of fighter plane, then another. Their aircraft were P-51 Mustang fighters. P-84 Thunderjets, Shaw’s first jet aircraft, soon replaced the P-51 Mustangs. Following the establishment of the Air Force as a separate service in September 1947, Shaw Field’s name changed to Shaw Air Force Base on Jan. 13, 1948. The parent organization was the 20th Fighter Wing. On April 1, 1951, the 363rd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing transferred to Shaw Air Force Base from Langley Air Force Base. The 20th Fighter-Bomber Group was already in place at Shaw. For awhile, Shaw’s activity was doubled. But that level of action was not to last long. Seven months later, the 20th FighterBomber Group transferred to Langley, and the 363rd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing became the host wing of Shaw Air Force Base. On Sept. 1, 1954, Headquarters 9th Air Force arrived at Shaw from Pope Air Force Base, N.C. Three years later, pilots of the 363rd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing set a new world speed record. Four RF-101 Voodoos assigned to Shaw participated in the flight known as Operation Sun Run. Lifting off from the runway of Ontario County Airport in California and flying to New York in only three hours and seven minutes, the Voodoos set a world record. Their speed was recorded at 781.74 miles

per hour. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, the 363rd played a major role. In the fall of 1962, it used its RF-101s for photo reconnaissance missions, helping to identify and track activities at Cuban missile sites, airfields and port facilities. President Kennedy presented the 363rd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing with the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. He praised the wing saying,“You gentlemen have contributed as much to the security of the United States as any group of men in our history.” The 363rd was redesignated the 363rd Tactical Fighter Wing on Oct. 1, 1981, and received its first F-16 on March 26, 1982. On Aug. 9, 1990, the 17th and 33rd TFS of 363rd TFW became the first F-16 squadrons to deploy to the United Arab Emirates in Operation Desert Shield. Beginning Jan. 17, 1991, the wing flew combat missions to Iraq and Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm until Feb. 28 of the same year. In 1993, the 20th Fighter Wing was located at RAF Upper Heyford, UK. When it phased out its F-111E operations, the 20th FW was inactivated. On Dec. 31, 1993, the 363rd Tactical Fighter Wing was inactivated. That group was activated as the 20th Fighter Wing on Jan. 1, 1994. Currently the 9th Air Force serves at Shaw as the headquarters for the U.S. Central Command Air Forces (USCENTAF) and conducts U.S. air operations throughout Southwest Asia. The host of Shaw Air Force Base is the 20th Fighter Wing. Last year, the base also became home to the Third Army, which relocated its headquarters to Shaw from Fort McPherson, Ga. The Item archives

F-16 The F-16 is a single-engined, very maneuverable, supersonic, multi-role tactical aircraft. The F-16 was designed to be a costeffective combat “workhorse” that can perform various kinds of missions and maintain around-the-clock readiness. It is much smaller and lighter than its predecessors, but uses advanced aerodynamics and avionics, including the first use of a relaxed static stability/fly-by-wire (RSS/FBW) flight control system, to achieve enhanced maneuver performance. Highly nimble, the F-16 can pull 9-g maneuvers and can reach a maximum speed of over Mach 2.

AH-1 Cobra Helicopter The AH-1 was the backbone of the United States Army’s attack helicopter fleet, but has been replaced by the AH-64 Apache in Army service. Upgraded versions continue to fly with the militaries of several other nations. The AH-1 twin engine versions remain in service with United States Marine Corps (USMC) as the service’s primary attack helicopter. Surplus AH-1 helicopters have been converted for fighting forest fires. The United States Forest Service refers to their program as the Firewatch Cobra. Garlick Helicopters also converts surplus AH-1s for forest firefighting under the name, FireSnake.
Skybolt 300 The Award winning Skybolt 300 is the only air show airplane flying that was built in the living room of a condominium. It was designed with eye-catching features that allow the air show fan to easily follow each maneuver. The Skybolt 300 is a modern biplane design similar to the Pitts Special but is larger and more powerful. The two place Skybolt has a wing span 24 feet and is powered by a modified Lycoming engine producing over 300 horsepower. This combination of power and agility brings air show excitement like no other act - one wing or two. To get the maximum performance during a show, the Skybolt is stripped of all unnecessary items including the seat cushions.

PITTS S-12 Curtis Pitts began the design of a single-seat aerobatic biplane in 1943–1944.[3] The design has been refined continuously since the prototype’s first flight in September 1944, however, the current Pitts S2 still remains quite close to the original in concept and in design. Several of the aircraft that Curtis Pitts built had a picture of a skunk on them and were called “Stinkers”. After she bought it, aerobatic performer Betty Skelton called the second aircraft that Curtis built,“Lil’ Stinker”. The prototype S-2, which was the first twoseat Pitts, was “Big Stinker”, the prototype Model 11 (later called S1-11B) was “Super Stinker”, and the prototype Model 12 was the “Macho Stinker”.
F4U Corsair The Vought F4U Corsair was a carrier-capable fighter aircraft that saw service primarily in World War II and the Korean War. Demand for the aircraft soon overwhelmed Vought’s manufacturing capability, resulting in production by Goodyear and Brewster: Goodyear-built Corsairs were designated FG and Brewster-built aircraft F3A. From the first prototype delivery to the U.S. Navy in 1940, to final delivery in 1953 to the French, 12,571 F4U Corsairs were manufactured by Vought,[1] in 16 separate models, in the longest production run of any piston-engined fighter in U.S. history (1942–1953). The Corsair served in the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marines, Fleet Air Arm and the Royal New Zealand Air Force, as well as the French Navy Aéronavale and other, smaller, air forces until the 1960s. It quickly became the most capable carrier-based fighter-bomber of World War II. Some Japanese pilots regarded it as the most formidable American fighter of World War II,[5] and the U.S. Navy counted an 11:1 kill ratio with the F4U Corsair.[6] As well as being an outstanding fighter, the Corsair proved to be an excellent fighterbomber, serving almost exclusively in the latter role throughout the Korean War and during the French colonial wars in Indochina and Algeria.
T-33 “Shooting Star” The Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star is an American-built jet trainer aircraft. It was produced by Lockheed and made its first flight in 1948, piloted by Tony LeVier. The T-33 was developed from the Lockheed P-80/F-80 starting as TP-80C/TF-80C in development, then designated T-33A. It was used by the U.S. Navy initially as TO-2 then TV-2, and after 1962, T-33B. Despite its vintage, the T-33 remains in service worldwide.

The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang was an American long-range, single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber used during World War II, the Korean War and several other conflicts. During World War II, Mustang pilots claimed 4,950 enemy aircraft shot down, second only to the Grumman F6F Hellcat among Allied aircraft. At the start of Korean War, the Mustang was the main fighter of the United Nations until jet fighters such as the F-86 took over this role; the Mustang then became a specialized fighter-bomber. Despite the advent of jet fighters, the Mustang remained in service with some air forces until the early 1980s. After World War II and the Korean War, many Mustangs were converted for civilian use, especially air racing.

Kent Pietsch in his 1942 Interstate Cadet, flies a comedy act, which includes extreme maneuvers, such as the aileron falling off in mid air!! In addition, Kent performs a dead stick (total power off) aerobatic routine from an altitude of 6,000 feet. The finale of this performance includes Kent landing in front of the crowd and placing the spinner into the hand of an individual! Kent has thrilled and entertained crowds with this unique act. Everyone with an RV has added aftermarket items to suit their individual taste. Kent has added a runway to the top of his RV and lands on it during his RV Top Landing show. This is one awesome act. While landing on his RV, Kent cannot see the RV, making this landing very difficult.
A-26
©2010 Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company
The Douglas A-26 Invader (B-26 between 1948–1965) was a United States twin-engined light attack bomber built by the Douglas Aircraft Co. during World War II that also saw service during several of the Cold War’s major conflicts. A limited number of highly modified aircraft (designation A-26 restored) served in combat until 1969. The redesignation of the type from A-26 to B-26 has led to popular confusion with the Martin B-26 Marauder. Although both types used the R-2800 engine, they are completely different designs. The last A-26 in active US service was assigned to the Air National Guard; that aircraft was retired from military service in 1972 by the US Air Force and the National Guard Bureau and donated to the National Air and Space Museum.

PT-17 STEARMAN
Defined as one of the most recognizable WWII trainers ever built, the PT-17 Stearman “Kaydet” flies on into the 21st Century. Designed originally as the Model 70 by Lloyd Stearman, the design was adopted by Boeing after it bought the Stearman Co. The Kaydet trained many of the aviators of WWII in their early days as pilots and soldiered on after WWII as popular recreational and agricultural aircraft. The PT-17 owned by the Collings Foundation is based in Stow, MA and can be seen at local events and airshows. Check our schedule for flight experiences in the Kaydet. It is also available for booking in the 2008 season and flight experiences during our open house in Stow, MA..
BT-13 The Vultee BT-13 was the basic trainer flown by most American pilots during World War II. It was the second phase of the three phase training program for pilots. After primary training, the student pilot moved to the more complex Vultee for basic flight training. The BT-13 had a more powerful engine and was faster and heavier than the primary trainer. It required the student pilot to use two way radio communications with the ground and to operate landing flaps and a two-position Hamilton Standard variable pitch propeller. It did not, however, have retractable landing gear nor a hydraulic system. The large flaps are operated by a crank-and-cable system. Its pilots nicknamed it the “Vultee Vibrator.”
