Crazy Golf Things and and Actual New Equipment by Kathy Bissell

Baffler of yesterday and today. Courtesy clubsofdisctinction.com and cobra.com

Drivers with cavities and slots. Cigars with no real smoke. Hollow golf balls. Towels made of plants. A fan for your cup holder. Return of The Baffler, not part of a Batman movie. It’s another wacky year in the world of all things golf. First the actual equipment. Then the things and stuff. As they say in Key West, Everything Old is New Again. Tom Crow started Cobra Golf on the back of the Baffler, a utility club that was good to hit out of anything not fairway. It back when Johnny Miller was the Desert Fox. White belts and bell-bottomed pants were fashion statements. The second commissioner of the PGA Tour was just getting his feet under him. It was 1974. People who mattered, but were maybe not the best golfers had Bafflers, like Dinah Shore. As the years progressed, the Baffler by Cobra eventually was usurped by the Rescue club by TaylorMade and many other utility woods that were introduced. But none had the original impact of the Baffler. Recently Cobra must have realized what a great club the Baffler was and that they could reintroduce it again to a whole new audience, 40 years later. Today the Baffler is no longer made of wood. It is high tech materials and has tungsten weights. But the design and the Baffler rails are still what you need to get out of rough, rocks, sticks, anything that’s not fairway, all for just. $159. In addition, they’ve extended the name so you can get Baffler drivers, fairway woods, irons, for men or women, the whole set not just the one club. In addition to the Baffler line, Cobra has the AmpCell drivers with MyFly technology, allowing golfers to select from six different loft/trajectory settings woods and irons in hot colors. The Amp Cell can be adjusted with a simple wrench to 8.5°, 9.5°, 9.5° Draw, 10.5°, 10.5° Draw and 11.5°. The Amp Cell Pro can be adjusted to 7.5°, 8.5°, 8.5° Fade, 9.5°, 9.5° Fade and 10.5°. Even with the adjustment, the face angle stays the same. The cell pattern inside allows Cobra to put weight on the bottom and create a high launch, low-spin club for more distance. Amp Cell driver is $300; the Amp Cell Plus is $400. The Amp Cell comes in four colors: silver, blue, red and orange. Interestingly, all the colors have been selling somewhere in the 20+ percent range in both the men’s and women’s color palettes. Rickie Fowler, Ian Poulter and Lexi Thompson are all Cobra staff players. Taking a cue from the Baffler, Barney Adams started the Adams Golf with the Tight Lies utility club back in the 1990s. By then, it’s likely that Cobra Golf no longer made the Baffler. No one wanted wood then. The focus was on high tech metals. “In the mid-1990s everybody copied it,” said Mike Fox of Adams Golf. “The new Tight Lies has a lower profile — (a half inch) lower. It’s 20 percent smaller. It has a patented velocity slot.” That, according to Fox, gives it more “face speed” compared to the original and it translates into more distance. New Tight Lies comes in four lofts: 3-wood, 16 degree, 5-wood and 7-wood. “It’s for any golfer looking for that 200 yard club,” he added. He said the Tight Lies is also good for women because they tend to hit fairway woods more often and need a club that’s easy to get into the air. (I did not lecture him about poor placement of women’s tees being the reason women have to hit many fairway woods because, after all, he is in the golf club business, not in the where-the-women’s-tees-are business.) Big Bertha is back, and she’s taking names. Ok, got carried away with that, but Callaway drove a tank onto the floor of the PGA Show to make the point that Bertha is ready to roll.

THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP GUIDE 2014 9

Not only is she ready, she has two models, Big Bertha and Big Bertha Alpha. Regular Big Bertha has a slot with a moveable weight in it, reminiscent of, dare we say it, the TaylorMade SLDR, which has just become available in white. The idea of the moveable weight track, whoever has it, is to allow a golfer to adjust the torque, the twist, the moment of inertia of the club as it goes through impact. You might be able to adjust slightly for your slice by putting the weight in one place, and adjust for a hook by putting it in another. The weight placement is typically counter intuitive. If you put it near the heel of the club, that’s anti-slice and if you put it toward the toe, that’s anti-hook. (Please consult an expert for your swing.) Big Bertha is $400 at callawaygolf.com and TaylorMade SLDR is $400 at golfgalaxy.com The Big Bertha Alpha has a way to change the level of the center of gravity on the club. While most people want a low center of gravity to get the ball in the air, some people already hit a high ball and need it lower. The low center of gravity is supposed to reduce the spin rate of the golf ball for the better player. It’s $500 at golfsmith.com Nike has a new Covert 2.0 driver with a hole in the back of it the size of a small scoop of ice cream. This design was debuted several years ago by Burroughs Golf, which came and went, but the technology lived on. (The other technology Burroughs created was the ability to change shafts on a driver.) The hole in the back, what Nike calls fly brace technology, removes the weight that used to be there and shoves it more around the whole driver face than if the hole were not there. In theory, it means a bigger sweet spot. (And if that doesn’t work, you can always eat ice cream out of it.) Find it for $400 at www.pgasuperstore.com Now that you have all the information on what to use to hit your monster drives, how about some news in golf balls, including one that has a charity angle from Jack Nicklaus? It also has a cute factor that they did not anticipate. The golf balls are “Golden Bear Black, Blue and White,” and they are designed around a golfer’s swing speed. But golfers don’t need to know their swing speed to use them. “The beauty of these balls is they solve the golfer’s dilemma of which ball to play. All you need to know is the tee you play from, and no matter what your skill level, you know we’ve designed the highest quality golf ball best suited to your game,” said Nicklaus. If you are playing from the back tees, then you should use the black. If you are playing from the forward tees, then the white is the ball for you. If you are in the middle, then blue is the one. The golf balls also have a charity angle in that they can be ordered on line or purchased at any

Jack Nicklaus designed golf course. At purchase, a donation to the Nicklaus Children’s Healthcare Foundation can be made. There’s a special internet order price and a suggestion donation for each dozen of balls. The highest priced are the Golden Bear Black, at $32 per dozen with a suggested donation of $20. The balls are made for Golden Bear by Bridgestone. According to the Nicklaus organization 80 percent of the people who purchase are making some kind of donation. Now the cute. Nicklaus spokesman Scott Tolley said when the golf balls were put out on the range at a course that shall remain nameless, they all disappeared. “We’re going to have to have different kinds of range balls,” Tolley said. Well, golf balls with little bears? Who wouldn’t want one? In another completely different golf ball category are OnCore

golf balls, the ones with the hollow metal core. The debuted in 2013, but they were not approved by the USGA at that time. Now they have USGA approval. The hollow metal core has a thin wall for compression. The proprietary metal alloys plus the ultra-high performance polymer mantel shifts the weight of the ball toward the perimeter, reducing the amount of side-spin, according to Bret Blakely, company president. That should lead to straighter shots and lower scores. OnCore has seven patents for their golf ball technology, which might be important to someone who wanted to acquire them. Right now, OnCore is doing direct sales online. While they are located and laser weld the inner cores in Buffalo, they send those offshore to get the covers made and then have them ****Preferred Membership Initiation Fee pricing for the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club and The Lodge & Club is available exclusively to Ponte Vedra Club Realty customers and clients. shipped back to the U.S. A sleeve will set you back just $10, and a dozen $40. In another part of this publication, we covered the debut of a putter by former PGA Tour commissioner Deane Beman (page XX). There is also another interesting putter making its curtsey this year called The Radius Roll with what they call Pure Strike technology. The Radius Roll idea came to Rick Monroe after some indifferent putting. He had missed too many putts. He was absentmindedly hitting one golf ball with another and noticed the ball rolled perfectly. Most putters have loft and cause the ball to go into the air for a short time or skid after they are hit, thereby increasing the chance for error. “Could a good putt is be as simple as hitting the golf ball with another golf ball?” he wondered. After retiring from 30 years at Caterpillar he decided to finally do something about it. Radius Roll is the result. The putter is rounded on the front, similar to a golf ball. That means it can’t hit the golf ball with loft because it has no loft. It’s similar to one golf ball hitting another. After five years of research, Monroe had some putters made and didn’t like the quality from the first supplier. So he found a shop on the south side of Chicago that gets the tolerances right. Now he’s officially in the golf business. Radius Roll comes in black soft carbon steel or stainless 303. There are center-shafted or heel shafted models. Find it for $290 from www. radiusroll.com The names are fun too, especially the one called “Money.” Speaking of putters, Super Stroke has the grip used by PGA champ Jason Dufner and by everybody’s pick for next everything, Jordan Spieth. Dufner uses the Slim 3.0 and Spieth uses the Flatso Ultra. Super Stroke also has a specialty grip designed for players who use The Claw putting style. And, no surprise, that’s what it’s called. The Claw is a longer grip to allow for the different hand position utilized in that style grip. It’s USGA approved as are all the Super Stroke grips. When it comes to new products, the imagination of inventors runs wild, and it’s not just the ball and club companies that make your jaw drop in amazement. There is one new product that everyone in northeast Florida needs to have for the next six months: Chill Skinz. You can buy it as a towel, as a headband, as a beanie, whichever. It’s about to be your new best friend. Chill Skinz uses the technology of PVA plus the natural technology of plant fibers (which are part of what it’s made of) to keep you cool while you are playing golf, walking, running, gardening — any outdoor activity. You dampen it with water from taps, fountains, bottles, ocean, river, even from perspiration. And all you have to do to “refresh the cooling power” is shake or snap the towel or headband and the cool comes back. Towels comes packed in a zip-top bag and have been treated against mold and mildew. Chill Skinz is cool to the touch when you open it. Seriously, this could save someone you love from heat stroke. When the temp is 90 degrees, Chill Skinz will be 15-20 degrees cooler. Draped around your neck, that means you stay cooler. Small Towels are 8-by-25-inches, $13. Large Towels are 13.5-by-30-inches, $20. Worth every penny. And they are made in Jacksonville. (www.chillskinz.com) Now that we’re cool enough to go the golf range, let’s try out the Golf Swing Shirt. It looks a little like a straight jacket, but it’s a great training tool. Like most golf devices, it was invented by a not-very-good golfer trying to get better: in this case, Ray Rapcavage of Staten Island. He was in the yard hitting balls and he kept shanking and hitting his house by mistake. He was frustrated trying to make a good swing. He thought maybe it was arm position, so he went inside, got a cardigan sweater put both his arms in one arm of the sweater and started swinging. 12 THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP GUIDE 2014

Right away, he improved. He was on to something. Two weeks later Rapcavage had made a pattern of what would become the Golf Swing Shirt. He tested it on other people to make sure it wasn’t just him. It worked for them, too, so he went forward. He figured out a way to make a real product and started selling it, never mind how crazy it looks. Golfers, as we know, will try anything that works. Padraig Harrington heard about it and ordered one. Jimmy Ballard, legendary teacher of Hal Sutton and others, endorses it. Ballard is the one who talks about the golf swing needing to be “connected.” It’s hard to be more connected than with your arms inside this thing. It’s like Spanx for your golf swing. It holds you together. You can order them in black, white or orange for $70 with free shipping. They are sold by your weight because each size needs a certain amount of stretch. You’ll pay $20 extra for international orders. After that, you’re probably ready for medication. How about The Pill? It’s like a golf ball with the sides cut off and is instant feedback for your putting stroke. It won’t fix you, but it will show you the error of your ways. With a wrong hit, The Pill wobbles one way or another off line. According to Paul Nagi, a golf trainer who has worked with The Pill development team, it tells you if you are pulling or pushing putts so that you can work toward making a better stroke. The Pill is the exact weight and feel of a golf ball and is two-piece construction so you could use it for chips, too. Seven years in testing and designed for short game use. The Pill is $13 each, $37.95 for a bag of 3 or $130 for a dozen. (www.thepillgolf.com) If The Pill doesn’t fix your putting, try Eyeloc head gear, co-founded by PGA of American professional Tony Vos. The idea behind Eyeloc is that most people move their eye away from the ball when putting or chipping. That can causes misses. Eyeloc started when Vinny Lamorte, a 15-handicapper, took the wrong pair of glasses to the golf course and could only see the ball if he kept his head in the upper half of his bifocals. Like other golf inventors,

he believed he was on to something because his game was better. He then took a magic marker and colored over everything on the lens of a pair of glasses except a small area, figuring that kind of focus could do the same for someone else. Vinny’s golf pro said that if there was a way to make it a training aid, he might have something. His friends weren’t 100 percent convinced, but they didn’t want to toss away what could be the Next Big Thing. They got an eyewear expert involved, and eventually, there was a design and a patent and adjustable lenses and yellow glasses with a narrow slit in them that pretty much make you look like an insect or a cat. But as we know, golfers don’t care what it looks like if it helps their games. What does happen when you put the glasses on and look down is that you have to keep your head still to see the golf ball though the slit in the lenses. That means it’s best for practicing your chipping and putting, but that’s half the strokes taken in any round of golf. They’re available in three sizes and cost $70 at www.eyeloc.com Biodegradably yours, we give you GelTees, golf tees that melt after use, like the Wicked Witch of the West in “The Wizard of Oz.” Distributed at the PGA Show by Zero Friction, they have morphed to the manufacturer, a company called Capsuline. Capsuline makes the outsides of capsules for pills, like the outside of a Tylenol capsule. Just as a pill dissolves after you swallow it, these tees dissolve when hit by dew and irrigation water. The tees are made from gelatin and are an alternative to wood and plastic. Visit www.capsuline.com and search for geltees, which run $14.99 a package. Some of the best lenses ever for changing light conditions are by Transitions. Now Transitions has teamed with Nike, Oakley and Callaway to provide lenses for their golf sunglasses. Rather than thinking of them as sunglasses, this of them as adaptive sunglasses because they darken when in the sun. Some are available in prescription strength, and don’t let that cause

concern. For those who might remember the glass photochromic lenses by another manufacturer, these are about 1/50th as heavy by comparison. Ok, probably an exaggeration, but Transitions are very light on the nose. The Nike Max Golf Tint is a violet lens sunglass when indoors and dark purple in the sun. It seems to enhance the greens. There are two other color choices, an outdoor tint which is a gray green and speed tint, which is a rose. There is also a polarizing lens. Oakley Transition G40 features rose-colored light to boost visual contrast and improve depth perception. However, they are also available in a clear that changes to black. Available with most prescriptions. Callaway Neox Transitions, which go from a yellow green to dark green, are available in prescription and non-prescription lenses. The color makes the contours of the ground easier to see, handy for reading greens. Transitions lenses darken with chemical technology. To make the switch, the molecules open, which causes the color to darken. How they get that to happen is their secret. Popular golf styles are available from all three manufacturers. Here’s a convenience item you may want to add to your golf bag: Golf Wipes, designed by golfers for golfers. Instead of carrying around a towel, unwrap a wipe that’s double sided with one side rough and the other side smooth to clean your clubs and golf balls. No more looking for water, dipping a towel in the pond or licking golf balls. Five upstate New York golfers put their heads together on this one. They come in an 18 per pack or as a dozen individual packets. The 18 pack has a hole to clip onto your golf bag. A dozen individual packets are $8.50, or an 18 pack is $8.85. To pair up with your Chill Skinz, you might want a Personal Golf

Fan for your golf cart. Cynthia Wark, president of the company, had her eureka moment when she was playing golf on a warm winter day at The Woodlands outside of Houston. “I thought, if it’s hot today, what’s it going to be like in August?” she explained. Then she made the leap to: Wouldn’t it be great to have a fan? Three years later, after designing, getting a patent, forming a company, sourcing manufacturing and learning how to sell in the golf business, Personal Golf Fan is a phenomenon. The fan fits into the beverage cup holder of the golf cart. There’s also an attachment that allows it to attach to the windscreen. It’s battery operated with a rechargeable lithium unit that is good for 200 charges. The fan life on one charge is 6.5 hours and it will recharge in three hours. The fan comes with adapters for all kinds of golf cart beverage containers. Recently she introduced a fan adapter for push carts. It’s $199 for the fan. Now, something pretty — because we all need that. For those who need to gift a group of women, Parsnips, maker of what owner Jo Ann Redding calls “delicious accessories for golf resort and travel,” has their 2014 collection ready to custom embroider with company names, club names and so on. She is in the business of selling to golf and country clubs and resorts but also does special group orders, for instance for everyone in your ladies day group. Finally, if you have a cigar smoker in your house or if you want to sell a cigar at your golf event, try the new Veppo e-cigar. There’s actual smoke, they come in flavors, and they eliminate that awful, makes-you-nauseous smell of actual cigar smoke. There are various nicotine levels, but the e-cigar has no tar or carbon monoxide as a byproduct.

60 years of E-Z-Go Golf Cars

In June of 1954, to Army veterans from Camp Gordon took some surplus B-17 wing flap motors and airplane industry tires and other parts they could find here and there and built the first E-Z-Go Golf Car, which most of us call golf carts. They used a three wheel platform and had a tiller bar steering mechanism and built it in a one room machine shop outside Augusta, GA. In 1960 the company was acquired by Textron. Today E-Z-Go has a campus with 750,000 square feet of space in five buildings. They have four manufacturing lines and 50 models, all of which are not for golf. Each car had directions printed on the dashboard in instruction like only having two riders per car. Not driving between sand traps and greens. Driving straight up and down inclines. Keeping feet inside the car. This model is from 1954 or 1955 and is the oldest one the company could locate.

2014 Players Championship

Who’s Going to

Win It? by Kathy Bissell

It’s that time of year again. As I gaze over the faded azalea blossoms and the newly planted begonias blooming on TPC Boulevard, watch the bald eagles circling to see where they are nesting this year and kick the oak tree catkins off the sidewalk for the 85th time, I find I’ll do anything, really, to avoid trying to picking a winner for The Players. The reason is because it’s harder to pick a winner for The Players than any other tournament in golf because only the best show up. No pretenders are here. They are winners or wannabewinners-so-bad-their-nails-are-digging-into-their-palms.

The reason it’s tough is that The Players entry rules could be the poster-child for “what have you done for me lately?” Past champions can return for five years. Then they have to do something to get back in. Past champs get a dinner and maybe a handshake. After that, it’s thanks very much. You want to come back? Win something. See ya. The Players is win and you’re in. Make enough money, and you’re in. Or be in the top 50 in the world rankings and you’re in. Otherwise, don’t bother us. You’re not good enough. The Players is brutal. Old school. You could say The Players is

so tough the symbol could be a 1-iron, but nobody knows what one of those looks like anymore. The Players is so tough, it takes guts just to register, never mind survive four days. It’s an equal opportunity disaster zone. And win it? Who do you think you are? Davis Love? Fred Couples? Tiger Woods? They’ve all won more than once and on this course. While Davis, Fred and Tiger are the big boy hitters you can have any kind of game and be successful. It just has to be good. Precise when it counts, like Hal Sutton or Fred Funk. Lucky when you need to be. Courageous enough to hang it over the water on 16 going for eagle. While most of the top players agreed before The Masters that only 15 or 20 people in the field could actually win that event, that’s not correct for The Players. It’s more like half the field could win it and then somebody else does. It’s really enough to drive a golf writer crazy. (That’s my excuse, anyway.) So who could win The Players? Well, that’s the trouble. Too many people. We have to eliminate some. Right away, people who are first timers to the course are out. They’re in worse shape here than at Augusta National. At least Augusta National gives room off the tee. Here, you get that uncomfortable feeling something is about to crawl out of the underbrush and bite your ankle and drag you into the water while you are in mid-backswing. The only first-timer to win here was Jerry Pate, and in all honesty, he’d played the course with Deane Beman beforehand and got the scoop. And Pate had already won a U.S. Open and six other tournaments, but this one pretty much did him in. (Ok, it was actually shoulder surgeries that did him in, but it’s a better story the other way.) Who else can’t? Probably anybody who hasn’t done well in the last two months. Guys who won last fall? Good for them, but they have lost their Mo as in Momentum and winning golf tournaments is about Mo as much as anything. Continued on page 28

Who’s got it, who’s losing it, who’s lost it temporarily. Mo is elusive. Who has now is Jonas Blixt, plus the great colorful clothes, like Rickie Fowler, who also has it. Even Matt Kuchar has it. But that’s right now. Three weeks from now that could change. Mo is fickle, untrustworthy, slithery. Catching Mo is like catching cats. Another who has it is Bubba Watson. That man has much more talent that we ever imagined. If he feels good when he gets here and has a good first round, who knows. There isn’t a golf course he can’t overpower if he feels like it. He could do to TPC Sawgrass what John Daly did to Crooked Stick. He just hasn’t yet. You can sort of see Mo flowing to Luke Donald with a couple of the iron shots he hit at Harbor Town Golf Links. That’s the old World No.1 style killer iron play. He doesn’t have to be long here, just long enough to get it around and accurate enough to stuff it down the old TPC Sawgrass’ throat. But you could see Mo thinking about maybe changing her mind when he made double on a couple holes at Harbour Town on Sunday. So, Donald is on the cusp of Mo. We don’t know which way it will go. Now Jordan Spieth has a lot of Mo. And when he doesn’t have it, he seems to be able to call it up on speed dial and make a date with it. The problem is his rookie-to-TPC-Sawgrass status. He’s got length. He has the touch to defy gravity, putting that is good enough, and he’s still hungry. He may be one of those guys like Arnold Palmer whose hunger for achievement never goes away. Jason Kokrak has been living on leaderboards for the last 10 months, but he may be too new to the surroundings. However, his name sounds like he could bend pine trees, and at TPC Sawgrass, that comes in handy.

THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP GUIDE 2014 29

There are quality players who should do well here and often do well here but have yet to win it, particularly Graeme McDowell, Lee Westwood, Justin Rose, Zach Johnson and Hunter Mahan. They should be considered threats, Mo or no Mo. They are the kinds of players who nearly always Show Up and Man Up. There is one player who right now is grabbing at Mo’s shirt and tugging hard, and that is Nicholas Thompson, Lexi’s brother. Lexi is his kid sister, and she just won a major. You think he has something to prove? I think he’s chasing Mo down until it succumbs. A couple of players who are not to be ignored are Harris English and Gary Woodland. A couple of wily veterans who can play any course, any time, anywhere are Ernie Els and Darren Clarke. It’s hard to believe that Els has not won this thing yet. The guy everybody will pick is Rory McIlroy, for obvious reasons. If he survived the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, his last tussle with Pete Dye, he can wrestle this one to the ground for a three-count. If they don’t pick Rory, they will pick Dustin Johnson. Unfortunately, Johnson has as habit of wining early and kind of going away for a few months. Since he already won in China, is he done until 2015? Doesn’t seem reasonable, but that’s his pattern. Dark horses Mo might take a peek at are Charl Schwartzel and Bill Haas although they have been in a resting mode of late. Haas proved he’s a big money player by winning the FedEx Cup, and this is the biggest money all year except for the FedEx finale in Atlanta. Watching Patrick Reed try to take apart TPC Sawgrass would be a blast. Mo might like to watch that. (Mo has a perverse sense of humor.) You have to pay attention to past champs, but a couple of them have had their minds on other things lately — Phil Mickelson has been injured a little and Adam Scott is just coming off a dream season. Sergio Garcia is lying low for no special reason as is Henrik Stenson. There are three veterans who have to be mentioned because you just never know: Steve Stricker, Kenny Perry and Carl Pettersson. Mo is not following them around, so it’s going to take wining and dining on their part. Can you imagine Kenny Perry as the champ? What a great story that would be for the Champions Tour. So who’s going to win? None of those picks. I’ve only come close once when I said an Aussie hadn’t won for a while and Adam Scott did. You may notice that Jim Furyk’s name is absent from the list. As much as he likes Harbour Town, he pretty much doesn’t particularly care for TPC Sawgrass. But just because you don’t like a course, it doesn’t mean you can’t conquer it. A victory for him would be SOOOOOOO popular here. And even though Mo has been talking to him lately, he’s going to have to be as tough as he was at his U.S. Open victory for this one. He and Mo are going to have to have a heart-to-heart. The player who is actually going to win is one so far under the radar that Mo doesn’t even see him coming. He is the last person to win a three-hole playoff on a Pete Dye course and The Players now has a three-hole playoff. He made the winning putt for the Ryder cup team in 2012 showing the toughness of alligator hide. After all that, he’s more experienced, and right now, he’s totally unexpected: Martin Kaymer. Now Mo just has to go and find him. 30 THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP GUIDE 2014

2014 Players Championship

New and Improved venues in Sure, maybe you know The Players. But even insiders will be wowed this year by the many additions made to The Players Championship 2014 experience. Since 2011, fans at The Players have enjoyed the addition of several new social venues, giving them a chance to cool off in the shade, grab a drink, relax with friends or watch the tournament on large LED video boards. This year, The Players will introduce three exciting new venues for fan and family entertainment — Tacos on 12, Trucks on 10 and the Michelob Ultra Blue Room VIP Lounge — and major enhancements to the Taste of JAX, Nicklaus Gate and the Women’s Pavilion. Here’s a rundown of those three venues and a refresher on some of the most recent additions from previous years, in case you missed them.

Tacos on 12

New this year is TacoLu, Jacksonville’s most popular Baja Mexicana, which will be featured on course at The Players. Seating and shaded areas located between 12 green and 13 tee will give fans the chance to rest, relax and enjoy some of “The Lu’s” delicious menu items, which are always made with the freshest ingredients.

2014 Trucks on 10

Sea Best 17 Deck

It’s hard to beat the views and atmosphere around No. 17, the most iconic hole in golf, but this year, thanks to the addition of the Sea Best 17 Deck, fans will have a better-than-ever, bird’s-eye view of the island green, No. 16 fairway and green as well as the 18th tee box. The Sea Best 17 Deck is a public bleacher behind No. 17 green and features a covered deck, misters to help fans stay cool and concessions.

UPGRADED FOR 2014: Taste of JAX

Located between 11 green and 12 tee, this public venue offers flavors from local, favorite restaurants, a Bacardi open-air bar, permanent restrooms and video boards to keep up with the tournament. In 2014, Taste of JAX will expand the patio, offer more seating and add two new local restaurants. Taste of JAX restaurants include: • Indochine – Thai and Southeast Asian cuisine from one of downtown Jacksonville’s most popular locales, plus glutenfree and healthy options • Metro Diner – Classic American fare with low-calorie and gluten-free options • Pele’s Wood Fire – Modern Italian-American cuisine where pizza is the signature dish, but that’s not all that’s on the menu • 4 Rivers Smokehouse - a sophisticated Texas-style smokehouse that is re-defining the art of smoking, one brisket at a time • Culhane’s Irish Pub – Irish-inspired cuisine

The Experience by Astellas

Open to all tournament attendees, The Experience by Astellas, located next to Wine & Dine on 9, will offer a unique, fun experience both on and off the course with championship-style games and other interactive activities. The Welcome Experience

You never get a second chance to make a first impression, so with that in mind, The Players has upgraded the main entryway experience for fans as they arrive through the Nicklaus Gate from general parking. The Welcome Experience now features pavers and activities for the whole family, including: • The Kid Zone - Starring the “GameTruck,” a mobile, videogame theater provided spectators with HD TVs and a wide selection of games for Xbox360, Wii and PlayStation3, as well as a GameCoach who manages the activities so parents can relax. The Kid Zone also offers snow cones from KONA ICE ( for purchase), a putt-putt course, arts and crafts, facepainting and an inflatable obstacle course for the kids to blow off some steam. The Kid Zone features a restroom trailer, videoboards and a misting tent where everyone can cool down. This is not a daycare area, as parents are required to stay with their children, but it allows parents the ability to take a break and relax in the shade while the kids have some fun. There won’t be any “quiet please” signs in this area! • Daily’s – For grab-and-go food and drink options. • TaylorMade Performance Experience presented by Charles Schwab – Stop by to have your golf swing evaluated and receive free tips on how to start playing like the pros. • Merchandise Tent – a great chance to gear up for The Players and buy those 2014-specific items that won’t last long once the crowds arrive.

Upgraded, permanent restroom facilities

Even after decades of staging a world-class golf tournament, there is always room to improve the fan experience at The Players. After each event, the tournament undergoes an extensive critique process, and a key aspect is fan feedback through surveys and social media comments. One of the most resounding items of feedback in recent years centered on the quality of bathrooms for fans. With that in mind, The Players has added another large-scale, permanent public restroom located at Taste of JAX near 11 Green and 12 Tee, which was constructed in the fall in advance of this year’s event. The new facilities feature 11 toilets per side and will also have air conditioning, attendants and changing stations in both the men’s and women’s restrooms. As in prior years, there will be additional temporary restrooms throughout the tournament as well. This third facility complements the two that were constructed — to great fanfare — at The Patio and Wine & Dine on 9 (near No. 16 tee/No. 9 fairway) in time for the 2013 event. The restrooms include water fountains and a place for fans to fill up water bottles/cups with chilled, filtered drinking water — a great, inexpensive way to stay hydrated while enjoying a day at The Players. Permanent restrooms are not typically found at courses that host large-scale tournaments, but the investment in the facilities is viewed as an important way to enhance the fan experience.

2014 Players Championship

Eats at the beach

the best of dining at The Players

The Players Championship has more to offer than your average sporting event, and there’s no better illustration of that fact than in the food selection. The Players 2014 will continue to include gluten-free, vegetarian and low-calorie options. The Players Championship is featuring menus from some of Jacksonville’s favorite restaurants in three locations. Taste of JAX showcases Indochine, Metro Diner, Pele’s Wood Fire, 4 Rivers Smokehouse and Culhane’s Irish Pub, while the popular Wine & Dine on 9 is once again hosted by Restaurant Medure. Fans can also indulge in Brucci’s, MShack, Bono’s BBQ, Tropical Smoothie Cafe and Firehouse Subs and Daily’s for healthy options in the Food Court. New in 2014, The Players will feature “Trucks on 10,” an outdoor dining area where spectators can purchase food from local food truck vendors, including Mama’s Food, Baby’s Badass Burgers, Corner Taco, Gourmet Aviator, Up In Smoke and Super Food. For smaller fans, kid-friendly options such as fruit and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches will be available at most concession stands around the course. Families can also visit The Kid Zone at

the Nicklaus Gate for the largest selection of kid-friendly favorites. Items such as grilled cheese, cheese pizza, junior hot dogs and fruit cups can be purchased in the Kid Zone. Families can bring in a gallon-sized clear plastic bag to tote snacks, sandwiches and more for the family, but no outside beverages are allowed. To help keep fans hydrated, The Players have “Mobile Refreshment Centers.” Eight carts will roam the golf course in strategic (high-traffic) locations, selling water, soda and beer, as well as a selection of snacks, to fans as they follow along watching their favorite players. Best views in golf keep getting

better

Hole 7 – The elevated mounding behind the green allows you to see all the way back to the tee box. Also, this new viewing area is just a few steps from a permanent restroom and the Wine & Dine on 9 concession area. Hole 8 – Always a fan favorite, you can get close to the action when players hit their tee shots thanks to new, elevated mounding behind the green (and in the shade of nearby trees). This area also allows fans to see shots land and players putt on this undulating green. Hole 9 – A great par 5 to watch players hit their tee shots and decide whether or not to go for it in two. Significant amounts of foliage to the left of the green have been removed, and bleachers were added so you now have a better view of players’ approach shots and putts. Hole 10 – The elevated mounding behind the tee provides great views of players’ tee shots, and you’re just steps away from a permanent restroom. Be sure to stop at Trucks on 10—the new food truck food court. Hole 11 – A fan favorite par 5 where players often go for it in two, the green is surrounded by sand and water, which provides non-stop drama and excitement. The newly enhanced bowl-shaped mounding around the green provides better views with great shade, and you’re a stone’s throw from a new permanent restroom and great dining options at the Taste of JAX.

Hole 12 – Two new elevated mounds have been added around the tee, providing excellent views of players hitting their tee shots. These new mounds are conveniently located near a new, permanent restroom and great local restaurants at the Taste of JAX. The new mound near the green allows you to look back at the tee and approach shots, as well as over the green for up-close views. Just behind the green is the new “Tacos on 12” venue. Hole 13 – This par-3 green offers a more intimate setting than the 17th hole, but there’s still plenty of drama and excitement. Fans directly behind the green may even see a ball or two roll through the green and end up in collection area just on the other side of the ropes from where they’re sitting. The top of the mounding behind the green also provides a nice view of players teeing off on No. 14. Hole 14 – A tough par 4 with great, elevated views behind the tee and the right side of the fairway, which takes you right past Taste of JAX and a permanent restroom. The mounding behind the green has been elevated and dense foliage eliminated for enhanced viewing. Hole 15 – This par 4 has elevated mounding on the left side of the green, providing good views of approach shots and putting, and you are close enough to make a quick stop for lunch at Trucks on 10, which is just behind the 12th green. Hole 16 – Elevated mounding behind the tee provides a

great view as players launch their tee shots, with concessions and a permanent restroom located to the right of the tee. The elevated mounding on the left side of the green also provides an ideal vantage point for approach shots and putts, as well as a view of the 17th hole. Hole 17 – The ultimate golf spectator experience, the iconic 17th island green has plenty of food and beverages located around the hole. This year you’ll find added shade to the public grandstands behind the green as well as concessions around the back of the grandstand. This is a perfect spot to watch golf and then see players walk off the green and through the tunnel as they head to the 18th tee. Hole 18 – You’ll find great views behind the tee and down the right side of the hole. The elevated area around the green is known as The Bluff, where courtesy folding chairs are provided at no charge, and if you’re in your chair when the last putt drops at the end of the day, you can take it home for free. Practice Areas – The roping of the practice green now allows you to get even closer to players as they do their final prep work before teeing off. There is also an open area on the range with umbrella tables and basic concessions, so feel free to stay seated in the shade while you watch players practice. New this year, in addition to the main practice range area, the back practice range (to the left of No. 9) has been opened up for fans. This includes a grandstand to watch players work on their games or warm-up for their rounds.

www.rickiefowler.com Rickie Fowler rocking the fairways with bright colors from Puma and a new haircut!

There are all kinds of fashion statements. Clothes, accessories, new ways to wear what’s in the closet. It all depends on your mood. Two of our fashion favorites, Rickie Fowler and Lexi Thompson are still rocking the fairways with bright colors from Puma. But it wouldn’t be fashion if there weren’t some changes from season to season. This season, Rickie loves bold graphics as well as bright colors. He’ll be wearing color block shirts with oranges and turquoise. And the real surprise: this season he’ll add some toned down styles including some neutrals and grays. This should really come as no surprise because, while top to toe orange or bring green or pink looks good on him, that same look may not translate to all of us. (Shirts, $70-75. Pants, $85-90.) While Rickie still likes orange on Sunday, he will add some prints and other graphics for shirts and some plaids/checks for pants. He will still put on the “go color,” all orange now and again. And just when you though you had him figured out, he got a haircut! No more Johnny Depp! New at Puma other than colors are fabrics for pants, including wovens that act like knits and new “Dri Release” fabric which dries four times faster than cotton. Dri Release is made by Optimer and is a combination of natural and synthetic fibers. It pushes water to the outside of the fabric. Lexi still likes the shirt out look with skirts, although there’s a new ankle pant that may

catch her eye before the season is over. At the rcent Kraft Nabisco, she won her first major championship. During the final round, Lexi wore a Sunday Blue which featured a polo in white with aqua stripes, a solid skirt and white, silver and aqua splash biofusion shoes. The polo is made from Puma’s Dri Release fabric. Hopefully that came in handy after she jumped into the pond at the 18th. (Tops, $55-65. Skirts, $60-65.) Some of her looks from the Kraft Nabisco, where she won her first major championship are featured here. “My Cobra clubs helped me play my best through each round, and my Puma golf apparel helped me look good while doing it,” Thompson said after her victory. Thompson has been wearing Puma since she turned professional in 2010. Just as Lexi and Rickie set trend with the younger looks, other golfers have their own fashion statements, particularly Ian Poulter, who is known for his tartans. This season, he has added some color blocking to shirts and matches them with tartans and solid trousers. Last year’s Master’s champ, Adam Scott, is still sporting clothing from a Japanese company called Uniqlo. Previously not widely known in golf, Uniqlo has had sell outs in shirts that Scott wore last season during major championships. Of course, when Scott won the Masters, he wore a simple white, which is always nice with “Masters green.” You can still buy one of those. It takes a little coin to be like Ian Poulter. First you have to load up on Ferraris. Buying the look is a lot easier on the pocketbook with trousers at $140, shorts at $85 and up, shirts starting in the $80 range and sweaters at $150. Ian also has some color block styles for 2014, but if you want the Poulter fashion symbol, you have to have a tartan. Ian posted a photo of what he wore to the Par 3 context at The Masters in his Twitter feed, although we don’t think he spent all his time in the flowers. Michelle Wie definitely got extra Nike fashionista points a couple of

Walk in Freddie’s Shoes

Just before the Masters, Ecco, shoemaker for Fred Couples, had a contest for someone to win shoes autographed by Fred Couples. The idea was to promote the new Fred Couples “autographed” golf shoe line. The Masters shoe is you-know-what-green and white and each one is laser-engraved with Couples’ autograph on the outside. There is a serial number on the inside. The shoes have yak leather uppers, a material that is both strong and light. Ecco says it is naturally soft, smooth, breathable and strong. It is treated with Hydromax for weather protection. (Suggested retail, $275. Available at pgatoursuperstore.com and golfsmith.com). Now if we could just hit the ball like Fred.

Watch This

There’s competition and then there’s competition. I see your Rolex, and I’ll raise you an Audemars Piguet. “A what?” you ask. Welcome to the world of really, really expensive watches. Some of them much more expensive than your house. No lie. For decades, Rolex has been the watch favored by PGA Tour players. Arnold Palmer started a relationship with the company in the 1960s as did Jack Nicklaus. In 1967, They were presented with Rolex watches to mark their U.S. Open victories in 1962 and 1965, beginning long relationships with two of the best known and most beloved men in the sport. Others have followed. Phil Mickelson in 1992. Tiger Woods in 2011. Whether Arnold Palmer was wearing his 1962 commemorative Rolex at his press conference at Bay Hill this year, probably doesn’t matter. But he was wearing a Rolex. Lexi, Rickie, Adam Scott, Retief Goosen, Annika Sorenstam, Luke Donald and many others are in the Rolex camp.

New Watches on the Block

Blue and white Audemars Piguet similar to the looks worn by Ian Poulter and Graeme McDowell at Arnold Palmer’s event.

Ian Poulter, Graeme McDowell, Bud Cauley, Darren Clarke, Henrik Stenson, Keegan Bradley, Lee Westwood, Nick Faldo, Louis Oousthuizen, Victor Dubuisson, and Miguel Angel Jimenez all sport giant watches by Audemars Piguet. You cannot miss them. Bold, sometimes brightly colored, like the blue one Ian Poulter wears or the white one Graeme McDowell had recently, they are one of the new status symbols to emerge on the PGA Tour in recent years. Priced from $20,000 to nearly $1 million, depending on the design, Audemars Piguet is definitely making a splash and a fashion statement. Not to be outdone, Omega has Tour players of its own, including Rory McIlroy, Greg Norman, Sergio Garcia and Michelle Wie. And if you like to count other categories, Cindy Crawford, James Bond (ok — Daniel Craig as Bond), George Clooney, Michael Phelps and a few select others. McIlroy signed with Omega in 2013. “Omega has a rich history in sport, both with the Olympics and in golf, and I have always had great experiences playing in its events. I have been a fan of the brand for a long time,” he said when the announcement was made.

Speaking of wearing a house on your wrist, the winner in the who-has-the-most-amazing-watch contest is recent Masters champ BubbaWatson. He has been wearing see-though watches from Richard Mille for a few years. Richard Mille likes to call them “skeletonized.” Whatever name you give to it, you can see

the mechanism on either side of the watch and you can see your wrist while you wear them. In the past Watson’s watch has been white, like the limited edition RM 038 Golfer’s Tourbillon, 2011, which has a retail of 518,000 Swiss Francs. There is also non-limited edition RM55 for 92,000 Swiss Francs. The recent exchange rate was 1.13 Swiss Francs = $1. With Watson’s latest victory at the Masters, Richard Mille is providing him with a green and white, see-through watch with a mechanical G-force sensor in the face under the 12. The watch is the RM38-01 with a Tourbillon mechanism. The G-force detector lets Watson see how many G-forces he generates with each swing. The watch will measure up to 20 Gs, and there’s a reset button by the 9 so each swing can be measured. The new watch is a limited edition of 50. It features a matte you-know-what-color green bezel and case created in TZP-G, which is a ceramic material with alumina in the mix. The band is grade 5 titanium molded with white rubber. $820,000 OK, Bubba, you win the contest for the highest priced wrist ornament. I think we can forget outfit envy. A few guys probably have watch envy.

2014 Players Championship

What’s next for

Tiger Woods? by Kathy Bissell Photos by Tony Eubanks

54 THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP GUIDE 2014

The Players defending champ Tiger Woods is recovering from back surgery, a microdiscectomy, and don’t try to say that three times after sitting at the 17th hole for an afternoon. The procedure was done March 31 by Dr. Charles Rich in Park City, Utah, and fortunately, the outlook these days for this kind of health event is good. Since it’s often said there is healing in laughter, Woods can always watch on TV this week and laugh while others dodge the dangers of TPC Sawgrass. He might have his feet up or be riding a stationary bike, secure in the knowledge that this time, it’s not his ball up a palm tree or in the alligator’s mouth. While we will miss Woods at The Players, the surgery certainly answered the big question of what was the problem with Woods’ play in the early part of the 2014 season. It wasn’t his putting or his driver or his swing. It was his back. Nobody likes to admit stuff like that. Especially a World No. 1. Woods had gone to his knees in pain at the Barclays last year, and he tried to fix the issue with physical therapy. Earlier this season, he pulled out of the Honda Classic, shot a final round 78 with back problems at WGC-Cadillac at Doral, and withdrew before the Arnold Palmer tournament started, all because of his back. He had to skip The Masters. When Tiger Woods skips a major championship because he’s having surgery, you know he has to do it. It’s the only option that will allow him to keep playing. It was a surprise when it was announced, but it explained a lot. The good news is we know his hands are working. He sent a tweet Masters week: “It never gets old watching the honorary starters tee off. One of the oldest and best traditions in the game.” The prognosis is apparently so good that, according to ESPN.com, Woods will play in a new golf tournament in South America in October. It is called the America’s Cup and will be held in Argentina. The event is a team contest and Woods will partner with Matt Kuchar. (They both have the same agent.) The other thing that news tells us is we have a defined month for the comeback: October. Will it be sooner? It depends on his recovery process. Some people recover from this surgery in two months. Some need a year. A lady at my health club, granted a few years older than Woods, had the surgery a year ago. She’s fine now, but she walked very gingerly for about four months and had physical therapists come to help her in the gym so she would not hurt herself doing rehab. So the answer on when is: We won’t know until we know. Unfortunately it means the victory march to 83 and 19 are temporarily halted. For those who are unaware, 83 and 19 numbers are significant because they are minimum career victory goals for Woods, as he restated the day after his surgery. Sam Snead had 82 PGA Tour career victories. Jack Nicklaus won 18 professional major championships. So 83 and 19 are the Big Goals. They aren’t just Big, they are So Big that only one has been done by each of those legends. Woods is trying to eclipse both in a single career. And he still has a great shot at doing it, assuming this comeback goes as well as the recent ones. However, it’s more likely that the victory counter will start in the 2015 season, not in 2014. “It’s tough right now, but I’m absolutely optimistic about the future,” Woods said in a statement he released. “There are a couple records by two outstanding individuals and players

that I hope one day to break. As I’ve said many times, Sam (Snead) and Jack (Nicklaus) reached their milestones over an entire career. I plan to have a lot of years left in mine.” In other words: Don’t write me off. I still want to break those records. However, with October as the next announced date, the U.S. Open at Pinehurst is out. He’s also not probable for the British Open in July. There’s an outside chance for the PGA Championship in August. That would be four months post surgery. The FedEx Playoffs start 10 days after the PGA. Because Woods won’t have enough points to be in the top 125, he won’t be eligible for the Playoffs. He will also miss the Ryder Cup. So if it were you and you were Tiger Woods, could you see yourself returning for the PGA Championship in 2014, then not playing for several weeks? It just doesn’t make sense. Better to take the extra two months and get stronger. Unless he is at the top of the rehabilitation chart, which is in the realm of possible but not probable, it’s unlikely Tiger Woods rushes his recovery when the rest of his career is at stake. Chances are Tiger Woods is done for the 2014 season. Here’s where Woods stands: He has 80 career victories. Number 78 was last year, here at The Players. He’s two behind a tie with Sam Snead and three behind breaking Snead’s record. Without the back problems, that record would be blown apart already. Woods collected five titles last season before his back started nagging him. If he is able to play professional golf again, he will blow by Sam Snead’s record, maybe by 20 or more titles. That’s just four or five average years for Woods. He has 14 professional major championships. Number 14 was

THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP GUIDE 2014 57

six long years ago at the U.S. Open in Torrey Pines. A lot has happened since then. How old was Jack Nicklaus when he had 14 majors? He won Nos. 13 and 14 in 1975, the Masters and the PGA. He was 35 years old. He won his 15th at age 38; the 16th and 17th when he was 40. The last one, the miracle one, Nicklaus was 46. Tiger Woods won his 14th major when he was just 32. The problem is that was eight years ago. Woods is currently 39 with a 40th birthday at the end of this year. Before this year, he has been neck-and-neck in the major competition with Nicklaus. Now he’s behind. To catch Nicklaus, he needs to win four more majors. To surpass Nicklaus, he needs to win five more. That means Woods realistically has probably 12 to 16 chances to win five majors. It’s an uphill battle. Only 15 players in all of golf history, including guys like Harry Vardon and Old Tom Morris, have won majors in their 40s. The most recent over-40s to win were Vijay Singh, Darren Clarke, Angel Cabrera, Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson, and that is an aberration since only 10 players in history over the age of 40 had won before 2004. Mickelson is really an exception because 58 THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP GUIDE 2014

he already won two majors after turning 40. If 40 is really the new 30 and if 50 is really the new 40, then Woods has a shot. If 40 is still 40, then Woods could be in trouble to match or surpass Nicklaus. Winning five majors is something most golfers don’t do in a lifetime, and he needs five more. Where does The Players fit in to all of this? Although we here in PVB count The Players as a major, the entire world does not quite agree with us yet, and we are on a player-by-player agreement situation with this one, even though many winners have said, yes, it’s a major. Were it to become recognized as the tough tournament it really is, as a Major, capital M, then that would give Jack Nicklaus 21 career professional majors because he won The Players three times. It would give Tiger Woods 16 career professional majors because he won The Players twice. If I’m Jack Nicklaus, I start lobbying for The Players to be a capital M Major. That would keep his record intact for a few more years! What the worst case outcome? That’s Tiger Woods never picking up a golf club again. He has said that’s not going to

happen, but while he is away from the game, it doesn’t hurt to look at what he has brought to it. The person who has been most outspoken on the value of Tiger Woods is — and this will surprise the heck out of you — Phil Mickelson. At The Masters, he discussed Woods’ contribution from his own personal perspective. “Look what he’s done for the game the last 17 years he’s played as a professional,” Mickelson said. “I’ve told him, and I’ve said this before, nobody has benefitted more from having Tiger in the game than myself.” He recalled talking to Steve Loy in 1991, who at the time was his golf coach at Arizona State. Mickelson had just won the Tucson Open as an amateur. “The entire purse was a million dollars, first place $180,000, and Steve and I would sit down and say, I wonder if in my lifetime, probably not my career, we would ever play for a million dollar first place check. It’s every week. It’s unbelievable what this game, what has happened with the growth of this game,” he said. “And Tiger has been the instigator. He’s been the one that’s really propelled and driven the bus because he’s brought increased ratings, increased sponsors, increased interest, and we have all benefitted, but nobody has benefitted more than I have, and we’re all appreciative.” When Mickelson said nobody has benefitted more than he has, he was wrong. Woods has benefitted more. Both Woods and Mickelson earn more on and off the course than any other current golfers. Jack Nicklaus pointed out at the U.S. Open in 2000 the result of the purse increases that had occurred between the mid-

1990s and 2000. “What’s really neat about the game of golf right now, and I like it, is that the guys right now can play golf, and through their prize earnings, make a living. We never could make a living from playing golf. By the time — the best year I ever had was a little over 300,000, and by the time you maintain two homes, travel, did everything you did, you came out with a job that — it was a nice job, but, you know, that’s the one guy on the Tour that was the leading money winner was the guy that got ahead. We had to do all kind of outside stuff was where we made our living,” Nicklaus explained. “The guys today can actually play golf on the golf course, don’t have to do anything outside, and a whole bunch of them can make a living.” In fact, the changes have been so positive for golf that some years since 1997, golfers have been at the top of the list of sports earning power whether the list is by Forbes or Sports Illustrated or whoever makes up the list. When golfers have not been at the top, they have been in the top 10, with many in the top 20. So, while Tiger Woods doesn’t really know it, there are hundreds, thousands of people in golf and around golf who are pulling for him to return and to be as good or better than he was. You want to talk about what will be good for the game of golf ? The best thing for golf right now would be for Tiger Woods to win another major, to resume the chase. Whether he gets there or not, it’s the chase that matters. The sport needs him more than he needs it. Phil Mickelson is right. It’s unbelievable what’s happened with the growth of the game since the mid1990s, and it’s no accident. It’s Tiger Woods.

Tuesday, May 6: Pens, Pics and Players

Because Tuesday is the best day for fans to get autographs and photos of their favorite players before the start of competition and the larger crowds, the day has been designated as “Pens, Pics and Players Day.” Fans are encouraged to visit the Autograph Zones outside the practice range and behind the Clubhouse to catch a glimpse of their favorite players, snap a photo and score an autograph. Throughout the week, players will only be signing autographs at the designated “Autograph

Zones,” not on the golf course. Improved in 2014 is a social media campaign that will alert fans through Twitter when marquee players are heading to the range to warm up for their practice round; social media caddies will also provide updates on players’ locations throughout their practice rounds so fans can better locate and follow their favorite players on the course.

Wednesday, May 7: Military Appreciation Day

5:30 p.m. — Military Appreciation Ceremony & Jake Owen Performance The Players week is filled with activities that highlight the “good side of sports,” most notably, a commitment to honoring the men and women who serve in the U.S. Military. The 2014 Military Appreciation Day ceremony will feature pageantry by military personnel, and a ceremony. Country music star Jake Owen will perform as part of the Military Appreciation Day event, which takes place on the terrace and lawn behind TPC Sawgrass clubhouse. While military personnel and their dependents are admitted free, Military Appreciation Day also offers an affordable and entertaining day for the entire family. Youth 18 and younger are free (all week) with a ticketed adult. For the general public, Wednesday Practice Round tickets are only $25 for the entire day.

When 40,000-plus people attend the tournament on Sunday, The Players will donate $1 per person to the 26.2 with Donna. In 2013, 26.2 with Donna earned a donation of $20,000 on Championship Sunday, part of more than $212,917 that was generated thanks to the organization’s partnership with The Players. A non-denominational church service will take place on the Presentation Lawn (7-8 a.m.), and TPC Sawgrass will offer breakfast (8-10:30 a.m.) and brunch (11 a.m.-2:30 p.m.) in “Nineteen” on Mother’s Day. Please note: Fans who have reservations for breakfast or brunch must have a clubhouse ticket to access “Nineteen.”

Sunday, May 11 (approximately 7 p.m.)

When the final putt drops on Sunday evening at The Players, there’s still more for fans to experience as the tournament champion receives The Players trophy at Closing Ceremonies. The Players Closing Ceremonies will once again be held on the Lower Clubhouse Lawn, where The Players Trophy will be on display during the week, allowing fans to surround the stage and get closer than ever to the new champion. Not only will

the ceremony be televised live on Golf Channel – giving fans the chance to be seen on TV – but the 2014 winner will also sign a limited number of commemorative Players pin flags to distribute to some lucky fans who stick around to congratulate him.

Exceptional Vintages

Golfers’ Wines by Kathy Bissell

Mike Weir 64 THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP GUIDE 2014

The wine business, to most of us, looks like a dreamy lifestyle. You’re in Napa, surrounded by rolling hillsides and fields of neat, even rows of the most exquisite grape vines. The sun is warm and bright, half way down the afternoon sky, warming your skin but not burning it. Overhead is a clear and brilliant blue canopy, not a cloud to be seen. A gentle breeze wafts in, changing direction from this way to that. The head of the vineyard brings you a glass of the latest to taste. You sit down and gaze over the landscape rolling endlessly in front of you and enjoy the rich flavor of what will be your first Merlot. You smile. The taste is perfection. You can now tell your friends with pride that you have “a label.” Well, that’s how we imagine it anyway. In reality, growing, producing, creating wine is hard work. There’s know-how and skill involved, with a sprinkle of luck tossed in from Mother Nature. In a way, it’s rather like golf. You practice hard to hit the right shots, and then sometimes the wind blows the ball off line and into a hazard. To get an excellent vintage, you have to have the right vines, the right weather, make good decisions on the kind and quantity of wine to produce and sell and have some experts on your side. But as with golf, bad weather can turn a great thing into disaster. Certainly, each of the professional golfers who have decided to enter the wine business have chosen specialists to help them succeed, and from the sound of things, they are all doing well. Some vintages are sell-outs. Golfing vintners include, in alphabetical order: Luke Donald, Ernie Els, Nick Faldo, David Frost, Retief Goosen, Cristie Kerr, Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Gary Player, Arnold Palmer and Mike Weir. (Annika Sorenstam and Nick Faldo have wines that are 100 percent sell-outs, and there are none currently on the market.) Each golfer produces different varieties and blends of wine in different regions of the world, in many price points for diverse taste buds. Many of their wines are award-winning and have Wine Spectator credentials. As we are not expert in that area, we suggest you have the fun of researching them on your own. What could be better than having Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman at your table? OK, you can’t get them, but you can enjoy their wines. Ernie Els gets credit for this story idea, by the way, and he doesn’t even know it. While grocery shopping and walking through the wine section, a bottle of Big Easy 2011 stared out. Could this be wine by Ernie Els? Yes. What other golfers had a label findable at Publix or Winn-Dixie or ABC Fine Wine & Liquors or local restaurants? Something that tasted good and didn’t break the bank. We discovered several golfers produce wines that are good-tasting, critically acclaimed and surprisingly affordable. Mike Weir’s brother Jim said he has even spoken to people who collect one bottle of every wine made by every professional golfers. Now there’s a hobby to aspire to. Getting the ones from South Africa may prove to be the biggest challenge. First two terms for the wine novice: “Varietal wines” are wine made from one kind of grape. For instance a Chardonnay is made from a Chardonnay grape. “Blended wines” are wine made from more than one kind of grape. A wine with Cabernet Sauvignon (one kind of grape) and Merlot (another kind of grape) is a blend.

Luke Donald

Luke Donald met Bill Terlato in 2006. Terlato, who is an avid golfer, was taking golf lessons from Pat Goss, Luke’s coach at Northwestern Coach and PGA Tour coach for a number of seasons. After the two of them met, it became obvious that they also shared an appreciation of wine. To get the right taste, Luke worked with Bill and the winemaker at Rutherford Hill to create a custom blend for the debut wine. The first vintage was the Luke Donald Collection 2006 Bordeaux-style red. Since that time, he has added a Napa red blend, a Carneros Chardonnay and a Sta Maria Hills Viognier. For each new wine, they blend and taste until they achieve the desired results for flavor. Luke describes the red as a Claret-style and the group as Old World style with New World grapes.

Luke Donald

Arnold Palmer & Mike Moone THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP GUIDE 2014 65

The term Claret has roots in the British wine trade of the 1600s. Typically, they were red wines from Bordeaux. Most were blends of several kinds of grapes. The Luke Donald Claret Red is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, cabernet franc and petit verdot. ($44 per bottle) The Luke Donald Carneros Chardonnay is reminiscent of the great white Burgundies of France. ($30 per bottle) Luke Donald Viognier is created from grapes of the Sanford & Benedict vineyard in Santa Barbara county. ($38 per bottle) Bottle prices are suggested retail from on line wine stores. They can be purchased from terlatotowines.com (look for the Luke Donald Collection) and uncorked.com, Ruth’s Chris in Ponte Vedra features all three Luke Donald wines.

Ernie Els

The Els vineyard reflects the welcoming nature of the Big Easy’s personality. Instead of small wine tastings, they have a special program of dinner with wine. Choices include beef sirloin steak, chicken or a cheese and meat platter and are served with Big Easy wine. They also do portfolio tastings with servings of cheese: Eight wines for 60 rand and four wines for 30 rand. Vineyard tours are extremely popular with visitors to the South African wine region, according to Lynton Kaiser, vice president of sales & marketing for Ernie Els Wines. Els has wider variety of wines that most golfers, and they are widely available, including some at our local stores. There are varietals and blends in the Els’ stable. Most are under $25 per

bottle, and many are under $20. Varietals include Ernie Els Proprietor’s Syrah 2011, Ernie Els Cabernet Sauvignon 2011, Ernie Els Merlot 2011, Ernie Els Big Easy White 2012 Chenin Blanc and Ernie Els Sauvignon Blanc 2013. The blends are Ernie Els Signature 2010 (made up of five Bordeaux varieties), Ernie Els Big Easy 2011 (Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Mouvdre and Viognier and Cinsaut) and Ernie Els Big Easy White 2013. The Ernie Els Signature Red 2006 Bordeaux Blend is either very good or has become more of a collector wine since its price is nearly $100 for the bottle. There are earlier vintages back to 2002, which probably have to be special ordered. If you can’t find them locally, try uncorked.com. Ernie Els’ wines, produced under the direction of awardwinning winemaker, Louis Strydom. They have a special purpose as well as good taste. As a portion of the proceeds from every bottle goes to Autism research.

David Frost

Unlike the rest of our golfer/vintners, David Frost’s family has actually been in the wine business in South Africa for more than 60 years. However, when he decided to create his own label, he purchased a 300-acre vineyard in the Paarl region of South Africa. It was 1994. Then he recruited Jason Fisher, who already had a winemaking reputation in Napa, to help him produce his first vintage. The result: 3,000 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon in 1997. Today’s current production is in the range of 7,000 cases

Retief Goosen

A little known fact is that Retief Goosen has a dry sense of humor. As proof of that comment, when he had been absent from golf media centers and then found his way back, he said, “A lot of you guys have aged a lot.” With his nickname, The Goose, it’s no surprise that some of his wines are called The Goose, and others are called The Gander. What is a surprise — or at least a strange twist of fate — is that the vineyard, in the Langkloof valley between Oudtshoorn and Uniondale in South Africa, was formerly named Ganzwerkraal which means Goose Enclave. A week after The Goose Wines acquired the property, a new flock of geese took up residence. In Afrikaans the birds are known as Wilde Makou. They are the largest variety of fresh water geese in Africa. You can only draw one conclusion. The Goose Wines were

Cristie Kerr

After taking a trip to a vineyard in Napa, one of many she had made to different wineries over the years while playing tournaments in Northern California, Cristie Kerr made a lifechanging decision. Discussions with Suzanne Pride Bryan, coowner of Pride Mountain Vineyards, led to the formation of a new boutique wine label called Curvature. Initially, they created the Curvature Cabernet Sauvignon. It proved so popular that several vintages have been sellouts. The 2007 was chosen for a White House dinner, which Kerr said was a “huge honor.” The Curvature Cabernet is described as having aromas of crème de cassis and ripe raspberry and a palate of black cherry, cardamom, and roasted coffee bean. It is aged in 60 percent new French oak which they say gives it a velvety finish. It can be consumed when purchased or aged for 10-15 years. With the success of the Cabernet, Cristie and Suzanne decided to add a Chardonnay, and that has proven to be equally popular. Cristie has taken courses to become a sommelier. “I have a good palate; I’m a good student. I have a photographic memory for wine,” she said. While Curvature is also a business for life after golf, Cristie currently uses the proceeds to raise money for breast cancer research and other women’s health care initiatives. To date, sales of Curvature wine and Cristie’s foundation Birdies for Breast Cancer have raised in excess of 3 million dollars for her charities. Wines are available on line in 750 ml, 1.5 liter and magnum bottles and in gift sets. The 750 ml size is $50 for Curvature Chardonnay and $85 for Curvature Cabernet. The 2010 Cabernet is the latest release of that varietal, and in the Chardonnay, 2012 is currently available. The others have sold 68 THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP GUIDE 2014

out. Locally, Curvature is served at the TPC Sawgrass and at the Sawgrass Marriott.

Jack Nicklaus

When Jack Nicklaus decided to join the growing list of golfers who have their own wines, it s no surprise that he sought some experienced winemakers. Jack, who has been a long-time wine collector, partnered with the Terlato family of Napa to create his signature wines. As with Cristie Kerr’s wines, some of the vintages are already sell-outs. However, more are being made to enjoy. Here are the latest: The first of the Golden Bear Commemorative Series, the 2009 Limited Edition Magnum marked the 50th anniversary of Jack’s first major championship victory, the 1962 U.S. Open. It is a Bordeaux blend, and only 1000 bottles were produced. Priced at $599, a letter of authentication comes with the magnum. Except for the magnum size, all wines are under $55. Jack Nicklaus Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 has aromas of red fruit, cherry and raspberry, layered with notes of dark chocolate. Jack Nicklaus Private Reserve White 2011 is a Sauvignon Blanc with a bouquet of citrus, stone fruit and green apple. Jack Nicklaus Private Reserve Red 2009 is a red wine blend with flavors of black cherry, plum and blueberry and hints of vanilla and nutmeg. Private Reserve incorporates Cabernet, Syrah, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec grapes. Order while you can — the 2008 vintage is sold out! Nicklaus wines can be ordered from uncorked.com.

Greg Norman

“I first learned to appreciate a good bottle of wine back in the ’70s when I started playing professional golf in Europe,” Greg Norman has explained about the genesis of his interest in winemaking. Obviously at that point in Norman’s career, his focus was on playing golf, not creating new businesses. Over time, with success of two Open Championships and 89 worldwide victories, he began to expand his horizons and develop business interests just as other successful golfers had done in the past. In 1996, he brought his idea for a wine label to the team at Wolf Blass, a premium Australian winemaker. Three years later, his first two Greg Norman Estates wines debuted: A CabernetMerlot from the Limestone Coast and a Chardonnay from the Yarra Valley. In 2000, a Shiraz was added and in 2001, Australian Sparkling. “The American wine market is booming,” he said about the growth in the U.S. “For the first time, wine, and learning about wine, has become interesting to people of all ages and all types of lifestyles. Unlike our European counterparts, for whom wine is as common as water, in the States it’s still new and a topic of much discussion and discovery.” Norman’s goal was to make wine accessible and lessen the mystery. The prices are also attractive, and bottles can typically be purchased under $20 for a 750 ml bottle. With success in the first few years, Norman expanded to include grapes from other countries to create a truly international brand. California wines were introduced in 2005, sourced from locales known for special varietals such as Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara County and Petite Syrah from Paso Robles. Others were added to the California collection. Most recently

Greg Norman Estates debuted a Malbec from the Mendoza region of Argentina. The latest wine is Shark Red. “I’m not out there stomping grapes or rolling barrels, but I am heavily involved in the stylistic direction of the portfolio and the brand image,” Greg said. “I make sure the quality is up to the standards we defined.” Greg Norman Estates Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir is available at the Marriott Sawgrass, Pusser’s and Lulu’s.

Gary Player

The Gary Player wines were started by Gary’s son Marc to honor his father’s nine PGA Tour and nine Champions Tour majors. The wines are limited releases of 18 vintages starting with 2003. “We set out to find both an outstanding premium wine that would be perfect for our customers,” Marc Player explained. They turned to boutique Stellenbosch winery Quoin Rock and winemaker Carl van der Merwe. Stellenbosch created a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage and Shiraz for the first in the series commemorating Gary’s 1959 Open Championship victory at Muirfield, east of Edinburgh on the Firth of Forth, in Scotland. Each vintage has a specifically dedicated label. Annual production is limited to 30,000 bottles.

Arnold Palmer

Arnold Palmer has chosen to focus on two varietals for his wines, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The Palmer branded vintages are created for The King by Luna Vineyards which is a couple of Palmeresque drives away from Silverado CC in the valley just north of Napa. Co-founders Michael Moone and George Vare acquired the land in 1995 and shortly afterward began planting for the future. Moone, formerly President of Beringer Vineyards, has been inducted into the Napa Valley Hall of Fame, so the reputation of Luna is without question. While the concentration is on two kinds of wines, there at

least three vintages available: The 2010 Arnold Palmer Cabernet Sauvignon has aromas of almonds and dark cherries. Flavors hint of mocha, raspberry candy, dark chocolate, and espresso. This one is still in some stores, but no longer at the vineyard. It can still be purchased in some locations, but only while supplies last. The 2011 Arnold Palmer Cabernet Sauvignon has a deep cherry and pomegranate color. The aroma is of savory spices while the palate finds dark red fruits. The 2012 Arnold Palmer Chardonnay has a bright and zesty scvent with lemongrass, golden apple and jasmine. Flavors of the wine are a mix of toasty vanilla, ripe pear, apple and citrus. The price per bottle is $15 for both the red and the white. It may be possible to find the wines from earlier seasons, dating back too 2005, but according to various on-line wine sellers, many are sold out. So buy these while they are available. Wine-searcher.com does have some earlier vintages, a bottle here a bottle there. For instance, it says that Broudy’s in St. Augustine has a 2009 Arnold Palmer Cabernet Sauvignon. Mike Weir

Mike and Jim Weir own and operate the Mike Weir Winery near Niagara Falls, Canada. They produce Mike Weir Chardonnay and Mike Weir Cabernet Merlot as well as a number of other varietal and blended wines grown from vines that they own and from grapes that they purchase from nearby vineyards in conjunction with Chateau des Charmes in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Surprisingly their location happens to be perfect for growing grapes. “The Niagara Escarpment is a microclimate,” CE Jim Weir explained. “Cold air goes over and settles on lake.” The Niagara Escarpment is a rock formation that runs in a semicircle from near Green Bay, Wisconsin, to approximately Rochester, N.Y. The dramatic flow of water over the Escarpment

is what we call Niagara Falls. “We own our vineyard,” company CEO Jim Weir explained about their 50 acres. “We can see across to downtown Toronto, the Sky Dome. It’s a beautiful view. I think it’s the best view in all of Niagara.” Jim and Mike Weir, like David Frost, came to winemaking through family. “Our grandfather was Italian. He immigrated to Niagara Falls,” Jim explained. “He made his own wine in the basement.” Jim remembers watching his grandfather racking the wines or bottling them, and he learned how it was done. “We had big pasta dinners (at my grandparents’ house). As kid, we would have ginger ale with just a little bit of wine in it to let you try it,” he recalled. “So we have just been around wine with our heritage.” The Canadian side of Niagara Falls is considered an excellent wine region these days with a growing number of vineyards added in recent decades, he said. “It has really taken off in last 20 years, with over 100 wineries.” Weir wines include both blends and varietal wines. They have a Merlot, a Cabernet-Merlot blend, a Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and sparkling wine. “We’ve been on the shelf for 2009 reds,” he noted. The ‘13 reds are in barrel now, and we released the 2012 Cab-Merlot. I think it’s one of the best we’ve produced. I think it will win some awards.” They have done some special wines, like the 281 Merlot Magnum which celebrated 10 years since Mike’s victory at The Masters.

“It was a signed bottle, and really cool,” Jim said. “We sold out quickly with that one.” Their vineyard, just 45 minutes from downtown Toronto, welcomes visitors. While some wines are easy to find in the U.S., that isn’t so with Mike Weir Wines. They have to be ordered from the website. They can ship to all states that allow wine to be shipped. Wine orders must be made in multiples of 6, in any combination of wines. Most are under $20 (Canadian) per bottle, with the sparkling wine under $25. An interesting aspect of Mike Weir Wines is that 100 percent of profits from sales go to his the Mike Weir Foundation to help children in Canada, including through the Children’s Miracle Network hospitals.

What to do with leftover wine:

Walter Taylor, who was part of the New York winery Taylor Wine Company, until it was sold to Coca Cola, founded another vineyard called Bully Hill, which became a 200,000 case winery. Taylor, a third generation winemaker, produced what were called easy-drinking wines with names like Old Trawler White, Meat Market Red and Le Goat Blush. He also designed labels for them which became collector’s items. And he was opposed to wine in a box. At a wine tasting, in an effort to demystify wine, Taylor once explained what to do with wine leftovers. A quarter bottle of this, an eighth bottle of that. “Take it all and pour it into a pitcher and put some fruit in it and make sangria!” he said enthusiastically.
