Após uma sequência de reportagens principais abordando temas técnicos, a exemplo das PPPs como solução para a gestão de resíduos ou do estudo sobre os resíduos orgânicos, que representam quase metade do lixo gerado no país, nesta quinta edição trazemos à tona uma abordagem mais abrangente a respeito da sustentabilidade, com base nos 17 Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável e nas 169 metas anunciadas no ano passado pelos países membro da ONU. Com a opinião de empresas de diversos setores, buscamos entender como as companhias se posicionam diante das metas e qual o caminho para se adaptar o mais rápido possível até um prazo que não está tão distante assim – 2030.

O mercado de RSS (Resíduos de Serviços de Saúde) também ganha destaque nesta edição, trazendo informações relevantes e as mais recentes normas do setor debatidas no Simpósio Internacional de Resíduos de Serviços de Saúde (SIRSS), realizado no Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas (IPT), em abril.

Na seção Mercado, entre outras notas relevantes sobre serviços, tecnologias e iniciativas públicas e privadas, consta uma breve cobertura do primeiro evento realizado pela ARes em parceria com a Felsberg Advogados e o Instituto PNRS. O evento, ocorrido em São Paulo, promoveu um fundamental debate a respeito do Acordo Setorial para Implementação do Sistema de Logística Reversa de Embalagens em Geral, assinado no fim do ano passado. Que venham mais eventos e, com eles, novas reflexões sobre como atender às inúmeras demandas, todas extremamente urgentes, da Política Nacional de Resíduos Sólidos (PNRS) no Brasil.

After a series of major reports on technical subjects, like the PPPs as a solution for waste management, or the study of organic waste, which account for almost half of the Brazilian generated waste, our 5th issue sheds light on a more comprehensive approach regarding sustainability, based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets announced last year by the UN member states. With the point of view from various sectors, we seek to understand how companies position themselves in front of the goals, and which way they have to follow in order to adapt as quickly as possible to a not-so-distant deadline – 2030.

The Healthcare Waste market (HW) also gained prominence in this issue, with relevant information and the more recent industry standards discussed at the International Symposium on Healthcare Waste (SIRSS) conducted at the Institute for Technological Research (IPT) last April.

In the Market section, among other relevant notes on services, technologies and public/private initiatives, a brief coverage of the first event held

by ARes in partnership with law firm Felsberg Advogados and the PNRS Institute. The event held in São Paulo promoted a fundamental debate about the Sectorial Agreement for Implementation of the Reverse Logistics System in General Packaging, signed at the end of last year. Let us bring more events and, with them, new thinking on how to meet all the numerous and extremely urgent demands of the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS) in Brazil.

De acordo com o Atlas Global de Gestão de Resíduos (GWMO), lançado em setembro de 2015, pelo Programa das Nações Unidas para o Meio Ambiente (Unep), em parceria com a Associação Internacional de Resíduos Sólidos (ISWA), os mais de 7 bilhões de habitantes que hoje vivem no planeta Terra geram por ano entre 7 e 10 bilhões de toneladas de resíduos sólidos, incluídos os domiciliares, os industriais, do comércio e de construção e demolição, o que torna a gestão destes uma tarefa quase infindável e faz com que essa atividade seja uma das mais dinâmicas do mundo. Em algum lugar do globo terrestre há sempre alguém coletando e dando destinação a um considerável volume de resíduos sólidos.

Entretanto, apesar dos vários esforços, uma grande parte do que é descartado ainda vai parar em locais inadequados, como lixões, ruas e praças, rios e oceanos. Segundo estimativas da publicação citada acima, cerca de 3 bilhões de pessoas não têm acesso a serviços de destinação adequada de resíduos.

According to the Global Waste Management Outlook (GWMO) launched last September by the United Nations Environment Programme (Unep) in association with the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA), the over 7 billion people now living on Earth generate 7-10 billion tons of solid waste every year, which includes household, industrial, trade, and construction/demolition waste. Dealing with all this waste is an almost endless task that makes this activity one of the most dynamic activities in the world. Somewhere in Earth, there is always someone collecting and disposing of a significant amount of solid waste. Despite many efforts, much of the discarded waste will still end up in inappropriate places, such as garbage dumps, streets and squares, rivers and oceans. According to the Outlook’s estimations, approximately 3 billion people have no access to proper waste disposal services.

Conter todo o volume de materiais descartados e implementar processos adequados para a recuperação e o tratamento destes apresenta-se como um dos grandes desafios da atualidade. A gestão de resíduos não é um processo uniforme ao redor do planeta, porém, existem alguns consensos que são válidos por todos os cantos. Um deles diz respeito à necessidade de implementar algum tipo de separação daquilo que é descartado e o outro impõe uma gestão que priorize a recuperação dos recursos contidos nos resíduos, tanto material como energética.

Refrain all the volume of discarded materials and implement proper recovery and treatment procedures is one of today’s great challenges we have to face. Waste management is not a uniform worldwide process, but there are some consensuses that are valid everywhere.

One of them is the need to implement some sort of separation for discarded contents. Another requires a management that prioritizes the recovery of material and energy resources contained in waste.

São diversos os benefícios decorrentes de uma gestão sustentável de resíduos que atenda aos consensos acima mencionados. Além de reduzir a poluição e conservar recursos naturais (que em vários casos estão em estado crítico de escassez), esse modelo também permite a mitigação de emissões de gases de efeito estufa, viabiliza novas fontes de energia renovável, prioriza processos de inclusão social e otimiza novas alternativas econômicas com geração de riqueza.

Doing a sustainable waste management that meets the above consensus brings several benefits. In addition to reducing pollution and preserving natural resources (many of them are in critical condition shortage), this model also allows the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, enables new renewable energy sources, prioritizes social inclusion processes and optimizes new economic alternatives for wealth generation.

A gestão de resíduos não é um processo uniforme ao redor do planeta, porém, existem alguns consensos que são válidos por todos os cantos.

Waste management is not a uniform worldwide process, but there are some consensuses that are valid everywhere.

Para que esse sistema seja colocado em prática e funcione é indispensável o engajamento dos diversos atores integrantes dessa cadeia, começando com a indústria, que tem a responsabilidade de produzir e inserir no mercado produtos aptos ao retorno e recuperação; inclui os consumidores, que precisam ser incentivados a fazer as escolhas certas no momento da compra, além de instruídos e sensibilizados para aderir e cooperar com os sistemas de descarte e retorno dos produtos; passa por uma fundamental atuação concreta dos sistemas municipais e intermunicipais de limpeza urbana, mediante a disponibilização das infraestruturas e serviços demandados para a recuperação dos materiais; e finaliza com o retorno e a valorização daquilo que é descartado, devendo-se assegurar um fim de vida adequado ao rejeito. Para isso, várias soluções podem coexistir.

For this system to be put into practice and work, the involvement of the various players in this chain is essential. It starts with industry, which has the responsibility to produce and put into market products that are able to be returned and recovered; then consumers, who need to be encouraged to make the right choices when buying, but also be educated and made aware to join and cooperate with the product disposal and return systems; followed by undergoing a fundamental and effective performance of municipal and inter-municipal urban sanitation systems through the provision of infrastructure and services required for the recovery of materials; and ends with the return and recovery of what is discarded, where one should ensure proper end of life to waste. For that, various solutions can coexist.

Mediante a leitura dos documentos legais, tratados, pactos e compromissos internacionais, dos estudos e das teses mais recentes, que versam de alguma forma sobre meio ambiente e desenvolvimento sustentável, o entendimento vai exatamente no sentido de ser necessária uma conjugação de esforços de âmbito global e uma participação dedicada – com assunção clara de responsabilidades – de todos aqueles que de alguma forma integram o ciclo de produção e consumo, do qual, salvo engano, não escapa ninguém.

By reading the legal documents, treaties, covenants and commitments, studies and more recent theories that deal in some way on environment and sustainable development, the understanding goes precisely towards the need for a combination of global level efforts and a devoted participation – with a clear assumption of responsibility – of all those who are somehow part of the production and consumption cycle. Unless we are wrong, there is no escape for nobody.

Nos dizeres das Nações Unidas, este é o momento de ação global para as pessoas e para o planeta, fazendo-se imperativa a adoção de uma nova agenda de desenvolvimento, mediante uma ampla aliança de pessoas, governos, sociedade civil e setor privado, todos trabalhando juntos para garantir o futuro que queremos para as gerações presentes e futuras.

PACKAGING SECTORIAL AGREEMENT IS THE TOPIC OF ARES MAGAZINE’S FIRST EVENT The Sectorial Agreement for implementation of the Reverse Logistics System for General Packaging was signed in the end of last year. The impacts of this agreement were the main topic of the first event held by ARes - Ambiente & Resíduos magazine in partnership with law office Felsberg Advogados and the PNRS Institute, on April 19th in São Paulo.

During the event, Carlos Silva Filho, CEO of the Brazilian Public Sanitation and Special Waste Companies (Abrelpe), highlighted two important milestones.

First, the shared initiative between Abrelpe and ARes Magazine in making the first event in partnership, strengthening the commitment to fostering high-level discussions and bring qualified knowledge to a wider audience. Then, the CEO highlighted the launch of the book Código dos Resíduos (Waste Code), which brings everyone a tangible source of information on solid waste. “Our proposal is to promote a meeting every six months, so that we can fulfill the mission of bringing information to an ever broader audience. In addition, with the book we are taking another step in the rise of the development of this sector, which is greatly injusticed and needs coordinated action of players who can handle it to the importance it deserves.”

During the meeting, Felsberg Advogados’ partner Fabrício Soler highlighted the Reverse Logistics System via Sectorial Agreements, Regulation and Terms of Commitment, as well as the challenges and goals for the sector. The roundtable had the participation of Anicia Pio, environment manager for the São Paulo State’s Federation of Industries (Fiesp), who talked about labor and economic issues; Delaine Romano, chair of (São Paulo City’s) East Zone Development Forum, on the cooperatives’ role; and Beatriz Kiss, manager of the Ciclo de Vida Aplicado (Applied Lifecycle) Program for the GVoes Center for Sustainability Studies, who explained the performance of the quantitative tool at companies.

According to Sabrina Andrade, Director of the Urban Environment Department for the MMA (Ministry of Environment), Brazil has innovated in the aspect of shared responsibility, since it is building and involving the whole chain link.

She also highlighted the reduction target of 3,815 tons/day of packaging, which tends to extend the life of landfills. Other points raised were the Phase 1 of the Agreement and their related actions, and the scope of this phase, which includes

12 cities and 39 municipalities.

WHIRLPOOL FINISHES OFF LANDFILL WASTE DISPOSAL IN BRAZIL Whirlpool Latin America – owner of brands Brastemp, Consul and KitchenAid – reduced to zero its sending of non-industrial waste to landfills in all its Brazilian units. In 2014, Whirlpool achieved the goal of eliminating the volume of industrial waste, and now they did the same with non-industrial. Brazil was the first country in which Whirlpool operates to achieve the goal. The prospect is that other regions achieve this target by 2022.

Since Whirlpool committed to the target in 2011, it ceased to deviate around 1,800 tons of non-industrial waste to landfills. From the total non-industrial waste produced by the company, about 50 percent are common garbage, 21 percent are sanitary waste, 11 percent are non-recyclable waste from restaurants, 10 percent are organic, and 8 percent come from civil construction.

For this, Whirlpool developed several initiatives to encourage leadership, awareness and behavior change among the employees, engaging suppliers and making investments in new processes, technologies and materials. Some alternatives found by the company to replace the sending of such waste are composting and coprocessing. In Manaus, restaurants’ waste is taken to increase animal feed.

Materials that cannot be recycled go to incineration, but the company continues to search for new technologies to improve the sorting and segregation of waste.

PROGRAM REUSES WASTE TO BUILD HOUSES The Viva Casa Program created by Goiania‘s NewInc construction company, allied environmental savings and economy generation to the dream of home ownership. For every 30,000 Brazilian Reais saved by employees at construction sites, one employee is awarded a home. Through sustainable techniques, these homes are built with left over construction materials.

Firstly, plastic, steel and paper are selectively collected and sold for recycling.

The second step relates to all the concrete that would go to waste. It is crushed and reused in the construction site itself, being transformed into blocks that will be used to build the houses to be given away. The program has converted the results into benefits for the environment, for the economy and for its employees.

FROM DUMP TO SCHOOL

The ISWA Scholarship Program took 25 children, who grew up working in Nicaraguan garbage dumps Nueva Vida and La Chureca, to school. Administered and supervised by New York photographer and ISWA partner Timothy Bouldry, the program aims to take children away from dumpsites and provide each one of them with a sponsor. Moreover, the program shows the need of closing these sites and creating alternatives for people who depend on them.

The program provides books, uniforms, transportation, psychological counseling and family allowances – as in some cases, the child was the one who worked to support the family, being unable to attend school. Anyone interested in helping to draw more children out of these dumps and contribute to their education can make donations to the ISWA program.

To find out more and donate: https:// www.iswa.org/programmes/iswa-scholarship-programme/ POLLUTEC BRASIL PRESENTS SOLUTIONS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION AND RESOURCE OPTIMIZATION Pollutec Brazil, the first Brazilian edition of the world’s largest environmental fair, took place from 12th - 15th April at the Anhembi Pavilion in São Paulo. Held in France for more than 40 years, Pollutec came to Latin America for the first time to meet the increasing demand of the Brazilian market for treatment of pollutants and sustainable development.

The opening ceremony had the presence of Paulo Octavio Pereira de Almeida, Vice-president of Reed Exhibitions Alcantara Machado; Paulo Ferreira, Brazilian Secretary of Environmental Sanitation for the Ministry of Cities; Dante Ragazzi Pauli, CEO of ABES (Brazilian Sanitary and Environmental Engineering Association); and Sylvie Fourn, Director of Pollutec France.

During the four-day event, visitors could see environmental solutions for water and wastewater treatment, waste management, energy efficiency, soil remediation, and air treatment and monitoring.

Along with Pollutec, the Cuidando do Futuro (Caring for the Future) Forum brought together companies and partners to discuss success cases in sustainable development, as well as to present an outlook on the country’s challenges in environmental services and resource optimization. O senhor assumiu a presidência da Abrampa há um ano. Durante esse tempo, quais os principais desafios enfrentados no tocante às questões ambientais no Brasil?

Assumi a presidência em 28 de maio de 2015. Nesse período, os principais desafios têm sido as propostas de alteração legislativa que comprometem a efetividade da legislação ambiental, como a prorrogação do prazo do art.

54 da Lei 12.305/2010, e a desestruturação do licenciamento ambiental com propostas que comprometem os princípios da natureza pública da proteção ambiental, da prevenção, da precaução e da participação comunitária.

A Abrampa tem acompanhado o processo de implementação da Política Nacional de Resíduos Sólidos? Qual o papel a Abrampa tem desempenhado nesse processo?

Temos acompanhado a implementação da Política Nacional, principalmente nos seus desdobramentos nos estados e municípios. Temos apoiado os promotores de justiça de meio ambiente em todas as ações voltadas à implantação dos planos de gerenciamento integrado de resíduos sólidos, à logística reversa e à implantação da destinação final ambientalmente adequada.

Quais progressos acredita que já foram conquistados desde a vigência da Lei 12.305/10?

Os principais avanços estão no campo da percepção ambiental do tema resíduos sólidos por toda a sociedade e na cobrança que é feita aos poderes públicos para

a implementação das ações públicas necessárias. Não existe espaço para que o gestor público defenda ou negligencie a ausência de políticas de não geração, redução, reciclagem, incorporação dos catadores de resíduos e os demais instrumentos da política nacional. Também se deve reconhecer que a lei de Política Nacional de Resíduos Sólidos abriu espaço para os empreendimentos que reinserem os resíduos na cadeia de outros produtos e, com isso, além de reduzirem o impacto sobre os recursos naturais, geram oportunidades de emprego e renda. O lixo já é compreendido pela sociedade como uma alternativa econômica.

Na sua avaliação, quais são os principais obstáculos para contarmos com um sistema sustentável de gestão de resíduos no Brasil? Onde e como podemos avançar?

O principal obstáculo ainda é a falta de planejamento estratégico e de investimentos, os entraves tributários à

You became chair of Abrampa one year ago. What were the key challenges that arose on environmental issues in Brazil during this time?

I assumed the chair on May 28th, 2015.

During this time, our key challenges were the proposals for legislative changes that affect negatively the effectiveness of the environmental laws, such as the extension of the deadline set forth by article 54 of Law 12305/2010, and the disruption of environmental permitting with proposals that compromise the public nature principles for environmental protection, prevention, precaution, and community participation.

Has ABRAMPA been following up the implementation of the National Solid Waste Policy? Which role Abrampa has played in this process?

We have been accompanying the implementation of the National Policy, especially on their developments in the States and Municipalities. We have supported the environment attorneys in all actions related to the implementation of the Integrated Solid Waste Management Plans, reverse logistics, and implementation of environmentally suitable final disposal.

Which advances do you think have been achieved since Law 12305/10 came into force?

The main advances are in the field of environmental awareness of the solid waste

subject by the society as a whole, and in the demands made to public authorities to carry out the necessary public action. There is no room for a public administrator to support or neglect the lack of policy towards non-generation, reduction, recycling, incorporation of waste collectors and the other instruments of the national policy. We also should acknowledge that the national solid waste policy made room for ventures that reinsert waste in the other products’ chain, and so can reduce the impact over the natural resources and create job and income as well. The society already understands waste as an economic alternative.

In your opinion, which are the main barriers to having a sustainable solid waste management system in Brazil? Where can we advance, and how?

The main obstacle is still the lack of strategic and investment planning, tax hindrances against reverse logistics, lack of commitment from some municipal administrators and, particularly, the inexistence of a public entity to control the implementation of this economic activity model. The policies on reverse logistics are still very sparse and have to deal with tax difficulties, We can advance by having a regulatory model similar to the model for sectors such as electricity, with more commitment from municipal administrators and transparency in all phases of this process, and integrating all stakeholders from public sanitation companies to technicians, industries and waste collectors.

NO BRASIL Revisão das normas ABNT sobre RSS e Logística Reversa de Medicamentos Descartados pelo Consumidor são prioridades do setor Embora, nos últimos anos, tenha se iniciado uma discussão mais consistente sobre a crescente preocupação com o meio ambiente e com a saúde pública, um tema que tem exigido maior atenção são os desafios de aplicação das normas da Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas – ABNT para gestão de resíduos nas instituições e empresas.

Foram mais de duas décadas até que as normas sobre os Resíduos de Serviços de Saúde (RSS) pudessem ser revisadas. O assunto ganhou fôlego entre os dias 11 e 13 de abril deste ano, durante o Simpósio Internacional de Resíduos de Serviços de Saúde (SIRSS), realizado no Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas (IPT), na USP (Universidade de São Paulo).

Para a engenheira e diretora da Associação Brasileira de Engenharia Sanitária e Ambiental (Abes-SP) e coordenadora das Câmaras Técnicas de Resíduos Sólidos e Saúde Pública da entidade, Roseane Garcia Lopes de Souza, todas as normativas relacionadas aos RSS precisavam de uma revisão e de um olhar, principalmente da PNRS. Além disso, ela ressalta que todos têm que entender a importância do conhecimento técnico para que se possa avançar em um consenso. “Estamos fazendo as normas para o Brasil, não para um determinado segmento. Todos juntos devemos entender que para dar um salto de qualidade, na questão de sustentabilidade, precisamos discutir juntos para nivelar conceitos, principalmente quando o assunto é minimizar riscos e trazer as boas práticas.”

Existia um descompasso entre as normas da ABNT e a legislação atual, segundo Erik Oswaldo von Eye, da Federação dos Hospitais do Estado de São Paulo (Fehoesp). “Esperamos que, agora, consigamos avançar para termos uma normatização que implemente a legislação e facilite a vida de todos os integrantes da cadeia.”

Despite of the rise of a more consistent discussion about the growing concern for the environment and public health in recent years, an issue that has required greater attention refers to the challenges that involve the implementation of the requirements of the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT) for waste management in institutions and companies.

More than two decades have passed until the rules on Healthcare Waste (HW) could be revised. The issue gained momentum from April 11 - 13 this year, during the International Healthcare Waste Symposium (SIRSS) held at the Institute for Technological Research (IPT) of the University of São Paulo (USP).

Engineer Roseane Garcia Lopes de Souza, who directs the Brazilian Association for Sanitary and Environmental Engineering (ABES-SP) and coordinates the Solid Waste Solid and Public Health Technical Committees for the entity, says that all HW regulations needed a revision and a look, especially of the PNRS. Moreover, she points out that everyone has to understand the importance of technical knowledge to make progress towards consensus. “We are making the rules for Brazil, not to a particular segment. All together, we must understand that it is to give a quality leap in the sustainability issue; we need to discuss it together to make concepts plain, especially when it comes to minimizing risk and bring best practices.”

There was a mismatch between ABNT and current legislation, according to Erik Oswaldo Von Eye, from the Federation of São Paulo State Hospitals (Fehoesp). “We hope that now we can proceed to have a regulation that implement the legislation and facilitate the life of all members of the chain.”

No dia 25 de setembro de 2015, os 193 estados-membros da Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU) adotaram formalmente a Agenda 2030 para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável, composta pelos Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável (ODS), que substituem os Objetivos de Desenvolvimento do Milênio (ODMs), vigentes até o fim do ano passado.

ABSTRACT DO ARTIGO PREMIADO: O presente artigo utiliza a “lente” da gestão integrada e sustentável (ISWM) para analisar o novo conjunto de dados compilado acerca de 20 cidades em seis continentes para a publicação-mestra da UN-Habitat Solid Waste Management in the World’s Cities (Gestão de Resíduos Sólidos nas Cidades do Mundo). A análise comparativa trata, primeiramente, das taxas de geração de resíduos e dos dados de composição destes. Um diagrama de fluxo do processo foi preparado para cada cidade, para que sirva de poderosa ferramenta para representar o Sistema de Resíduos Sólidos como um todo de uma maneira abrangente, porém concisa. Indicadores de benchmark são apresentados e comparados para os três principais componentes/fatores físicos: saúde pública e coleta; meio ambiente e disposição; e recuperação de recursos – e para três estratégias de governança exigidas para produzir um sistema da ISWM eficiente: inclusividade; sustentabilidade financeira; e instituições sólidas e políticas proativas. Os principais entendimentos incluem a variedade e a diversidade de modelos bem-sucedidos, ao contrário do modelo de “tamanho universal” (one size fits all); a necessidade de dados bons e confiáveis; a importância de focar-se na governança, assim como na tecnologia; e a necessidade de construir sobre as vantagens já existentes na cidade. Um exemplo deste último é o papel crítico do setor informal nas cidades de vários países em desenvolvimento: ele não apenas produz taxas de reciclagem comparáveis com os modernos sistemas ocidentais, mas também economiza milhões de dólares para as autoridades municipais ao evitar custos com coleta de lixo e descarte. O resultado é a oportunidade para soluções ganha-ganha, desde que os desafios de maior porte relacionados possam ser enfrentados.

ABSTRACT FROM THE AWARDED ARTICLE: This paper uses the ‘lens’ of integrated and sustainable waste management (ISWM) to analyse the new data set compiled on 20 cities in six continents for the UN-Habitat flagship publication Solid Waste Management in the World’s Cities. The comparative analysis looks first at waste generation rates and waste composition data. A process flow diagram is prepared for each city, as a powerful tool for representing the solid waste system as a whole in a comprehensive but concise way. Benchmark indicators are presented and compared for the three key physical components/drivers: public health and collection; environment and disposal; and resource recovery – and for three governance strategies required to deliver a well-functioning ISWM system: inclusivity; financial sustainability; and sound institutions and pro-active policies. Key insights include the variety and diversity of successful models – there is no ‘one size fits all’; the necessity of good, reliable data; the importance of focusing on governance as well as technology; and the need to build on the existing strengths of the city. An example of the latter is the critical role of the informal sector in the cities in many developing countries: it not only delivers recycling rates that are comparable with modern Western systems, but also saves the city authorities millions of dollars in avoided waste collection and disposal costs. This provides the opportunity for win–win solutions, so long as the related wider challenges can be addressed.

Para nós, da ARes, além de uma apurada técnica, um belo jogo de luzes e os tons instigantes do surrealismo, algumas das coleções de Miguel nos levam à reflexão sobre como estamos lidando com o meio ambiente e como enxergamos a nós mesmos inseridos em contextos maiores, como o político-social. “É prioridade preservar o meio ambiente, e isso passa pelo respeito a este, especialmente em relação à educação e ao exemplo que damos aos mais jovens. Eu me vejo obrigado a ser otimista para tolerar emocionalmente o que estamos fazendo ao nosso planeta, e assim acreditar em gerações presentes e futuras para que isso seja revertido”, aponta o artista.

Recent works of Spanish photographer Miguel Vallinas Prieto caught the media’s attention for different reasons. We at ARes were attracted by the refined technique, a beautiful light arrangement and the compelling surrealist hues. Some of Miguel’s collections make us reflect on how we are dealing with the environment and how we see ourselves, inserted into bigger contexts such as political and social. “Preserving the environment is a priority, and this includes respect to the self, especially in regard to education and the example we give to young people. I see myself forced to be optimistic to emotionally tolerate what we are doing to our planet, and so believe in present and future generations for this to be reversed, “says the artist.
