Hvera vellir

NEW Hveravellir Hveravellir nature reserve may be one of Iceland’s bestkept secrets with the naturally heated pool, the surrounding picturesque valley and on-site restaurant featuring local Icelandic fare, to enjoy at your leisure. Nestled between glaciers Langjökull and Hofsjökull, Hveravellir is known as the Oasis of the Highlands and is one of the last remaining untouched wilderness areas in Europe. As a geothermal hotspot, the area is dotted with bubbling water holes and smoking fumaroles. With several hiking trails through the geothermal area leading to an 8,000-year-old lava field and a cave that was home to the infamous outlaw Fjalla-Eyvindur in the 1700’s, there is no shortage of interesting landmarks to explore on foot during this multi-day tour. Your Winter Adventure to the highlands begins when you embark on the Gray Line Super Jeep in Reykjavík. Modified for Iceland’s off-road tracks and rugged terrain, a Super Jeep is the most thrilling way to journey across the land of fire and ice.

Hveravellir – Winter Adventure I AH170 Driving through the Golden Circle first, we stop at the historical Thingvellir National Park, the explosive Geysir geothermal area, and the majestic Gullfoss waterfall—some of Iceland’s most treasured landmarks. As we head for the highlands and drive on through the rugged terrain with our mighty Super Jeep, glaciers and ancient volcanoes will surround us in the otherworldly landscape of the highlands. Once arrived at the oasis in the highlands, a warm cabin and even warmer natural pool await you. The weather in the highlands can be unpredictable but no matter the elements, there are several options for activities at Hveravellir. You are free to explore the beauty of the area throughout the days—enjoy some downtime in the natural pool, go on a snowshoeing hike and check out the cave of the outlaws, or hang out in the cabin cozied up with your favourite book and a cup of hot chocolate. Should the weather be clear enough for the Northern Lights to appear at night, you are welcome to enjoy the unique experience of admiring them from the natural pool or during a night hike. However, as they are a naturally occurring phenomenon, they are not guaranteed. After the breakfast buffet on the last day, there will be a chance to take one final dip in the pool before making our way back to Reykjavík. Northern Lights Tours

About the Northern Lights Many travel all the way to Iceland with the sole intent of witnessing the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights. After all, it is one of the few places on Earth where the odds of catching a glimpse of this exquisite natural phenomenon are quite good during winter. The Lights come to life when electrically charged particles from the sun collide and enter the Earth’s atmosphere. They usually appear green but have also been known to materialize in yellow, pink, blue, violet or even red. They scatter across the sky and light up the darkness in a magnificent natural display of light and movement. We have years of experience when it comes to catching the Northern Lights. Our expert guides are veritable gurus when it comes to identifying the best locations to optimize our chances at spotting the lights. They rely on a combination of science-based aurora forecasts, a network of people in the field and 16 years of gut intuition, which means that no tour is the same. Because nature is unpredictable, no one can guarantee sightings, but what we can guarantee is an enjoyable and enlightening journey with the best shot at seeing the lights that you’ll find anywhere.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon Jökulsárlón is one of Iceland’s most popular locations, known for its unique and breathtaking beauty. It’s actually quite famous too, having been featured in the films “A View to a Kill”, “Die Another Day”, ” Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” and “Batman Begins”. So it should come as no surprise that the lagoon is also favored by photographers from around the world because of the majestic icebergs floating in the icy blue water. Jöklsárlón developed into a lake after the glacier Breiðarmerkurjökull started receding from the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. It has been growing at varying rates ever since and now covers an area of about 18 square km. It recently became the deepest lake in Iceland, at around 250 m deep. We offer several ways to reach Jökulsárlón to make sure you find something to your liking.

Inside the Volcano I AH131 Ever wanted to know what it’s like to be inside a volcano? Iceland is one of the few places in the world where you can actually see for yourself. Explore the inside of a dormant volcano with our expert guides. Some may wonder how that’s even possible, as magma chambers usually collapse following an eruption. The case of Þríhnúkagígur is exceptional in that the lava drained out like water from a pipe, leaving the volcano’s “plumbingsystem” empty but intact. So the Þríhnúkagígur crater is one of the few places in the world where you can enter a magma chamber.

After an hour-long hike, we enter the volcano by way of an open cable lift and descend 120 meters down until we’ve reached the ground. The ground space is about the size of three basketball courts and the cavity could easily fit the Statue of Liberty. The view inside is stunning to say the least. This tour provides a once-in-a-lifetime chance to have this unique experience.

New Year’s Tours

New Year It is safe to say that no other nation celebrates a new year quite like Icelanders do. Thirty minutes to midnight, you will probably start to hear fireworks. That is not an official firework display, but a majority of the population setting off about 500 tons of fireworks. Traditionally, families sit down for a festive family dinner, followed by a meet-up at a local bonfire. If you don’t see any locals out between 22:30 and 23:00, it is probably because all of them are inside watching the annual comedy show “Skaupið”, a satire of major news stories and big events over the past year. The end of the show marks the beginning of the madness, as families rush out to light up the sky with fireworks. We operate tours on New Year’s Eve where our expert guides take you to the local bonfires and best places to watch the spectacular fireworks display.
