Look Who’s Here IDS18 Guest of Honour:

Yabu Pushelberg. Hitting new design heights 38 years in, Yabu Pushelberg has long been recognized as one of the most globally lauded interior design firms of the day. George Yabu and Glenn

Pushelberg founded Yabu Pushelberg in 1980. Brought together in Toronto at Ryerson University in 1972—for reasons they say can be loosely linked to kismet— the Ontario natives would meet serendipitously again a few years later, and thus begin their partnership in business and life. With studios in Toronto and New York, the firm strives to redefine how the world sees and experiences the built environment. Their multidisciplinary approach to interiors, product design, textiles, lighting design and architecture, is informed by an endless curiosity, driven by collaborations with creative, like-minded people. Creating captivating hotels, restaurants, and residences all around the world, they are particullary known for marquee hotels such as the Four Seasons in Toronto and the W in New York. They have worked with some of the world’s leading innovators Presented by:

over the years, including Louis Vuitton, Stellarworks, Avenue Road, Bergdorf Goodman, Tiffany & Co., Kate Spade and Carolina Herrera. Recognized as design industry innovators, the duo have earned countless accolades for their work and contribution to international design excellence, including their appointment as Officers for the Order of Canada. They were named ‘Designers of the Year’ by Contract Magazine and were inducted into Interior Design’s Hall of Fame in 2002. In 2015 they received home town love when Design Exchange celebrated their partnership for exemplifying creativity, outstanding talent, and innovative vision. Wallpaper frequently reports on the firm, including a recent piece on the opening of New York’s Moxy hotel in Times Square, proclaiming “its playful, design-centric approach reaches a whole new level,” and Vogue cited the firm’s 2017 collaboration with Czech glass manufacturer Lasvit for their bespoke illuminated Christmas tree. Harnessing the creative potential of each new venture, Yabu and Pushelberg continue to lead and inspire the design industry the world over.

Look Who’s Here

Kathryn Ireland. British-born, pre-eminent interior designer Kathryn M. Ireland is a true citizen of the world. From her legendary

“sympathetic restorations” of landmark architectural houses and hotels to extraordinary homes for the Hollywood elite, the star of Million Dollar Decorators brings the best attributes of grand European style and cool California chic to every project. A diehard fan of bold color, the layering of pattern and texture, and the beauty of imperfection, Ireland’s interiors convey an easy, elegant vibe that is worldly and chic without trying. Ireland has become a major force in product manufacturing and has dedicated herself to producing her bespoke textile collections, weave collections, and upholstered goods all locally in the U.S. Beyond her eponymous line of textiles and furniture, Ireland has collaborated with several home furnishing brands including Grange and Scalamandre, and recently launched a paint collection with C2 Paints to complement her fabrics. In 2014, Ireland was named North American

30

Interior Design Show 2018

Brand Ambassador for beloved European brand AGA Rangemaster. She is the author of 6 best-selling books, including her most recent entertaining book, “Kathryn At Home.” Only adding to her long list of credits over her multi-hyphenate career, Ireland now develops and hosts Design Retreats each summer, and regularly hosts design bootcamps, where she offers her favourite local resources, professional expertise and storied experiences to help others succeed in the design industry. Ireland regularly appears as an expert on Good Morning America, Access Hollywood Live, and E! News. A shelter magazine favourite, Ireland’s design work appears frequently in Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, World of Interiors, Veranda, House Beautiful, W, and InStyle. Ireland is consistently featured on Elle Décor’s A-List and is one of the Top 25 Interior Designers as listed by The Hollywood Reporter. When she’s not designing or entertaining, Ireland divides her time between her home in Santa Monica, California, and her restored farmhouse in Southwest France.

Interior Design Show 2018

Look Who’s Here

Shauna Levy. Two words: Cultural. Entrepreneur. As co-founder of the Interior Design Show (IDS) in Toronto and current president and CEO of Canada’s Design Exchange (DX), Shauna Levy is a boundless visionary. Instrumental in positioning Toronto as an international design destination, she has led some of the world’s most creative design minds to Canada, and in the fall of 2017, launched her most ambitious project to date. “Design is certainly about beauty, but it’s now time for design to do some heavy lifting. Design should have a seat at the table when discussing how to create a world where all people can prosper.” Levy co-founded IDS Toronto in 1998 and spent the next 15 years building it into the largest design fair in North America. In doing so, she aligned Canadian designers with global all-stars such as Piero Lissoni, Jean-Marie Massaud, and Marcel Wanders, by wooing them to the show. When she became president of DX in 2012, she was tasked with broadening the appeal of the venerable Toronto institution. She began with Stefan Sagmeister’s ‘The Happy Show,’ followed by London Design Museum’s retrospective of Christian Louboutin. And in 2014, she launched DX’s first in-house curated show, ‘This Is Not A Toy,’ as imagined by zeitgeist artists Takashi Murakami, KAWS and Frank Kozik. For this show, she invited Pharrell Williams to co-curate. Not only did he accept, he shared items from his personal collection.

By 2015, she launched DX Satellite, a series of curated exhibitions in neighbourhoods throughout Toronto. “The definition of cultural experience has significantly changed. It is no longer purely the purview of museums, and for that reason, we have to go to where people are—literally and figuratively,” she notes. As industrious as all that sounds, the project she launched last fall was her most ambious to date. Expo for Design, Innovation and Techology (EDIT), in partnership with the United Nations, is a 10-day, worldclass design festival that demonstrates how design can make the world a better place for all. Interactive exhibits and installations were created alongside workshops and speaker programs featuring David Suzuki, Richard Florida, Daan Roosegaarde and Odile Decq. “At the DX, we don’t program for a demographic, it’s really more of a psychographic,” says Levy. “If you are interested in the world around you, then you are interested in design.” Interior Design Show 2018

Snarkitecture is a New York-based collaborative design practice, co-founded by Alex Mustonen and Daniel Arsham in 2008 to investigate the boundaries between disciplines. The name is drawn from Lewis Carroll’s The Hunting of The Snark, a poem describing the “impossible voyage of an improbable crew to find an inconceivable creature.” In its search for the unknown, Snarkitecture creates work that includes large-scale projects, installations and objects. Snarkitecture’s work focuses on the reinterpretation of everyday materials, structures and programs to new and imaginative effect. With a conceptual approach centered on the importance of experience, the studio creates unexpected and memorable moments that invite people to explore and engage with their surroundings.

Canadian by Nature. In an exhibition celebrating the best in new Canadian design, Canadian by Nature is on display at the 2018 Interior Design Show (IDS). Coinciding with the 20th anniversary of IDS, the exhibition brings together some of the most talented designers and studios, whether practicing in Canada or abroad, that represent the best of Canadian design today. Curated by Paul Makovsky, Metropolis magazine’s vice president of design, the exhibition showcases the work of over 50 architecture and design studios–both emerging and established–to explore how considerations of sustainability, conscientious uses of materials and design philosophies can create standout projects and products. “Our aim is to showcase the best and brightest in contemporary Canadian architecture, design, interiors, fashion and branding,” says Makovsky. “Through projects, products and prototypes in a broad range of disciplines, the exhibition represents the materials and ideas that drive the energy and creative scope of the Canadian design scene today, and challenge a few assumptions about what ‘Canadian design’ really means.”

There are some commonalities that could define Canadian design: a sensibility that favours restraint over excess, an appreciation of a rationalist and minimalist approach, and a respect for function, materials and craftsmanship. However, the definition of an established Canadian identity is one that encourages a plurality of views—one that is constantly evolving, rather than entrenched in dogma. “The Canadian design scene is experiencing an exciting moment,” says Makovsky. “We are embracing the idea that if we can describe Canada as the ‘first postnational state’ with no core identity and no mainstream, then we can celebrate Canadian design as transnational—fluid, not simple to define, and even sometimes contradictory. What is being celebrated here is room for a multiplicity of practices with multiple identities and multiple loyalties across the country and abroad.”

Design Workshop Architects asks:

How Bright is Our Future? The Fourth Industrial Revolution is already here. Technologies formerly found only in the realm of science fiction are now creeping into our daily lives or wait just over the horizon of the very near future. Each of these new technologies has the potential for great good or unintended negative consequences. We are asking designers and the public how they will help shape change, where their fears and hopes lie, and what our place in this new world will be. Simply put, we are asking: How bright is our future? Installation IDS visitors will enter a dark enclosure to encounter a forest of tree-like fixtures. Each of these “trees” offers the viewer a tactile surface printed on the skin of the tree that responds to the viewers touch. They will be asked to react to the most promising and terrifying changes that will inform our future, and record how they view that topic: either as one of hope or one of fear.

Data gathered from all the inputs contributes to an illuminated meter that displays where each individual as well as the collective result, puts us on that spectrum of fear and hope. The results are also projected onto a screen where each participant sees how they influence the future – but they must confront the reality that we will all create this future together. Explore what the future holds at IDS18.

Caesarstone Collaboration with Snarkitecture. Architecture meets art meets kitchen island. Caesarstone introduces its 2018 Designer Program collaboration with Snarkitecture at IDS Toronto. The collaboration focuses on the icon of the modern home, the kitchen island. This year’s project presents a realistic and practical interpretation of Caesarstone, one that looks at the functionality of the kitchen, while drawing from Snarkitecture’s signature blend of architecture and art. Following IDS, the collaboration will become a large-scale installation on display during Milan Design Week in April as part of Fuorisalone. Snarkitecture is a New York-based collaborative practice established to investigate the boundaries between art

and architecture. The name is drawn from Lewis Carroll’s The Hunting of the Snark, a poem describing the “impossible voyage of an improbable crew to find an inconceivable creature.” In its search for the unknown, Snarkitecture creates architectural-scale projects, installations and objects. Snarkitecture’s work focuses on the reinterpretation of everyday materials, structures and programs to new and imaginative effect. With a conceptual approach centered on the importance of experience, the studio creates unexpected and memorable moments that invite people to explore and engage with their surroundings. By transforming the familiar into the extraordinary, Snarkitecture makes architecture perform the unexpected.

Rollout + Interior Design Show’s (Un)Common Spaces. Be sure to check out all five (un)common spaces at the Interior Design Show, all of which serve tasty snacks and adult beverages. Each space is a collaboration between Rollout and some of the most talented people they know from Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and New York. Babble Yum at South West Café Rollout’s New York collaborators for IDS18’s (un)common spaces, FormNation and BYAMT, bounce back to simpler times with a playful parallel between One & Many, resulting in an interactive (and totally fun) terrain.

Hive Talk at Studio North Taking their inspiration from nature, Rollout’s Calgary IDS collaborators present Hive Talk. This hexagonal habitat parallels Together & Alone in the most unsettling way, like bees hovering too close for comfort, but too far away to swat.

Crate Canteen at South East Café Rollout’s Toronto team builds what may be the simplest game of Tetris to date. Paralleling One & Many, these pragmatic props work together to perform all your sitting, leaning and photo-op needs. Pick one up. Move one around. Just don’t steal one for your bike.

Alone Together at 1128 Central Lounge Café Rollout’s IDS collaborators from Vancouver affirm our choice to be Together or Alone through varying heights and hollows. No matter our next move, we are interconnected, overlapping and energizing one another.
