Fourth Sunday after Epiphany

From the Rector Of Knowing and Doing

To know what love is one must be about loving; to know what good is, one must do goodness. I learned about that again this morning. I just served as a panelist along with several L'Arche core and team members in a conversation with some Birmingham Southern students who have chosen for their January term project observing and learning about intentional communities; what they have termed neomonastic communities. They first visited a Benedictine community in north Alabama; then the Koinonia community in Americus, Georgia, and now L'Arche, Mobile their last stop. L'Arche, for those of you who don't yet know about it, is a residential community that serves people with mental disabilities; people, if it weren't for L'Arche, who would be institutionalized. They reside together, take their meals together, share household chores, worship together, share sorrow and joy and the stuff of life, just like the rest of us.

On the Calendar: Tuesday, January 26 3:30pm Training choir rehearsal Wednesday, January 27 12N Holy Eucharist (Chapel) 4pm Girls’ Choir rehearsal 7:30pm Parish Choir rehearsal Thursday, January 28 12N Al-Anon (Smith Rm) 5:30pm AA (Smith Rm) Saturday, January 30 9am Recovery 2-day (Smith Rm) Sunday, January 31 8am Holy Eucharist 9am Breakfast 9:25am Christian Education 10:30 am Holy Eucharist Reception following

Each team member (the paid staff) of L'Arche without exception said that they stay at L'Arche for far different reasons from those for which they came. One woman said she came because she simply needed a job, but that now she stays Tuesday, February 2 because through her caring for these "least" souls, these who are considered 11:30am All Saints serves @ 15 Place marginal in our world, she is learning not only how to love unconditionally her 3:30pm Training Choir friends and family through an acquired new perspective; but she is learning also how to love herself. She said that once she almost left because of the deaths of two core residents whom she'd grown to adore, but that she stayed because she had learned that love was in truth stronger than death. Another team member informed the students that living in this community is not all sweetness and pious hymn-singing, but that there are flashing moments of anger and resentment, just like with the rest of us. But she said that those moments don't last long because they work hard at communicating their differences with the goal of reconciliation. A student asked, "And you pull that off consistently?" "We have to," she said, "or else we wouldn't last as a community." She said that she came to L'Arche because of a vague calling that she wanted to serve something larger than herself. Now she says that she stays because she is learning that love is real; that God is not invisible, but alive in all of us created in God's image. These weren't canned phrases...but words learned and spoken from experience. Over my years here, I've been learning from L'Arche, too. I've learned that seeing to the good of our neighbor is the highest form of love, love that brings joy and love that transforms. The L'Arche community is a model, with all its flaws and messiness, for all to see that we can't live with integrity and dignity except in community, a community that cares first for the other, that the needs of each matter equally.... a community that forgives as vital necessity; a community that, in spite of its fragility, becomes invincible through love...That is who God is...and that is who we all are...creatures both human and divine, made to give only...to love only for the world's transformation and renewal....and to live such a life is to know joy that is visible...to do love is to know love....to know God alive among us, ...Let us get about the work of enlightened loving, for there we will surely see the God of Love.... see and know in our own time and own place....We have to, else we won't last.

Lenten chefs wanted!

Calling all supper clubs, choirs, breakfast teams, youth groups, ushers, altar guild, Sunday School or just plain folks! We need people to cook 5 suppers during Lent: February 24, March 3, March 10, March 17 or March 24 for this year’s Lenten Program (see next page for details). Nothing needs to be fancy— quick and easy does just fine. Please call the church office to reserve your date now (438-2492).

Three Cups of Tea is our Lenten study book this year. The title comes from a mountain village chief in Pakistan who said, “Here (in Pakistan and Afghanistan), we drink three cups of tea to do business: the first you are a stranger, the second you become a friend, and the third, you join our family, and for our family we are prepared to do anything—even die.” Twenty-five copies have been ordered and will be here at the end of the week. Copies are $10 each. (We advertised $8 each but Amazon would not let us order more than 3 at a time, so we ordered from Barnes & Noble at the slightly higher price.) If you would like to reserve a copy, please call the office at 438-2492.

Stewardship Report

Most of the pledges for 2010 are in now. So far, 68 pledging units have increased their amount pledged, and there are 12 new pledging units. There are 121 units pledging so far, which is down from last year’s 135 units, but the total pledged is only $1026.84 less than 2009. Finals calls are being made this week and the Vestry and Finance Committee expect this to be a great year. Thanks to all of you who have responded!

Garage Sale Fundraiser The Girls’ Choir is hoping to travel to Florence, Italy this summer to sing at the Episcopal Church of St. James, where the Rev. Mark Dunnam is the rector. One of the ways they will raise funds is with a garage sale, to be held March 13 in Stirling Hall. Your donations to the sale are requested (think ‘Spring Cleaning!’) Almost any item is acceptable except, please, NO clothing other than children’s clothes! Donations may be stored in the youth office of the Parish Hall beginning immediately. More details will be posted, including the time of the event, as we get closer to March. Remember: one person’s trash is another’s treasure!

Haiti Response

Several people have asked to have the form for sending contributions to Episcopal Relief & Development for Haiti disaster relief printed. They are now available at the back of the church and on the volunteer’s desk outside the church office. A new tax relief law allows people who contrib. -.ted in 2010 to charities providing earthquake relief in Haiti to take a tax deduction for the contribution on their 2009 tax return instead of their 2010 return. This means you can receive an immediate tax benefit, rather than having to wait until you file next year’s return. Please check with the IRS as certain restrictions apply, using the following link: http://www.irs. gov/newsroom/ article/0,,id=218645,00.html?portlet=7

Congratulations, Basenbergs!

Joe and Jean Alice Basenberg are the proud grandparents of Jensen Austin Butterworth, born on Jan 25 to daughter Anne Katherine and husband Jeff in Boulder, CO. Uncle Jensen and great-grandfather, Harold Hensen are also thrilled. Here is baby Jensen at only 9 hours old!

Lenten Program begins February 24 “Wednesdays in Lent” — February 24, March 3, March 10, March 17 and March 24 — begin at 6:00pm with Evensong in the chapel followed by supper and book discussion in Stirling Hall from 6:30-7:30pm Nursery will be available Study Book:

Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace...One School at a Time by Greg Mortenson

Books will be available in the church office at the end of this week for $10 each To reserve one, please call or email the office as soon as possible (438-2492 or asstrector@allsaintsmobile.org) [There is also a young reader’s edition of the book, intended for readers 8 years and up, available on line or at local bookstores] It is often worth reading something that is very familiar to us using different words; it makes us think. The following is a contemporary version of 1Corinthians 13:1-13, ‘the love passage’ often used at weddings, which will be the second lesson for this Sunday. It is taken from The Message, a scholarly translation which is true to the Greek in which it was originally written.

If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don’t love, I’m nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate. If I speak God’s Word with power, revealing all his mysteries and making everything plain as day, and if I have faith that says to a mountain, “Jump,” and it jumps, but I don’t love, I’m nothing. If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don’t love, I’ve gotten nowhere. So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I’m bankrupt without love. Love never gives up. Love cares more for others than for self. Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have. Love doesn’t strut, Doesn’t have a swelled head, Doesn’t force itself on others, Isn’t always “me first,” Doesn’t fly off the handle, Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others, Doesn’t revel when others grovel, Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth, Puts up with anything, Trusts God always, Always looks for the best, Never looks back, But keeps going to the end.

Love never dies. Inspired speech will be over some day; praying in tongues will end; understanding will reach its limit. We know only a portion of the truth, and what we say about God is always incomplete. But when the Complete arrives, our incompletes will be canceled. When I was an infant at my mother’s breast, I gurgled and cooed like any infant. When I grew up, I left those infant ways for good. We don’t yet see things clearly. We’re squinting in a fog, peering through a mist. But it won’t be long before the weather clears and the sun shines bright! We’ll see it all then, see it all as clearly as God sees us, knowing him directly just as he knows us! But for right now, until that completeness, we have three things to do to lead us toward that consummation: Trust steadily in God, hope unswervingly, love extravagantly. And the best of the three is love. Scripture taken from THE MESSAGE. Copyright © by Eugene H. Peterson, 1993, 1994, 1995. Used by permission of NavPress Publishing Group.
