ZIKA Virus

On January 22, 2016, CDC activated its Emergency Operations Center to respond to outbreaks of Zika occurring in the United States of America and increased reports of birth defects and Guillain-Barré syndrome in areas affected by Zika. On February 1, 2016, the World Health Organization declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern because of clusters of microcephaly and other neurological disorders in some areas affected by Zika. On February 8, 2016, CDC elevated its EOC activation to a Level 1, the highest level. Things you should know regarding the outbreak of the Zika Virus: As of February 9th 2016, no local mosquito-borne Zika virus disease cases have been reported in US states, but there have been travel associated cases. Prior to 2015, Zika virus outbreaks occurred in areas of Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. In May 2015, the Pan American Health Organization issued an alert regarding

the first confirmed Zika virus infections in Brazil. Currently, outbreaks are occurring in many countries. Zika virus will continue to spread and it will be difficult to determine how and where the virus will spread over time. No vaccine exists to prevent the Zika virus disease however you can prevent Zika by avoiding mosquito bites. Typically, mosquitoes that spread the Zika virus bite mostly during the daytime. If you have Zika, protect others from getting sick • • • • •

During the first week of infection, Zika virus can be found in the blood and passed from an infected person to another mosquito through mosquito bites. An infected mosquito can then spread the virus to other people.

To help prevent others from getting sick, avoid mosquito bites during the first week of illness. The spread of the virus through blood transfusion and sexual contact has been reported.

10

Zika virus is transmitted to people primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito. These mosquitoes typically lay eggs in and near standing water in things like buckets, bowls, animal dishes, flower pots and vases. They prefer to bite people, and live indoors and outdoors near people. When traveling to countries where Zika virus or other viruses spread by mosquitoes are found, take the following steps: • • • • •

Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants. Stay in places with air conditioning or that use window and door screens to keep mosquitoes outside. Sleep under a mosquito bed net if you are overseas or outside and are not able to protect yourself from mosquito bites.

Can Georgia and Georgia Tech get to the dance? Will a 16 seed take down one of the top dogs? Could the likes of North Florida or SMU finally find their glass slipper? There are plenty of intriguing questions that remained to be answered as the 2015-2016 NCAA Tournament approaches. March Madness grips fans

and non-fans alike across the country. It’s true that office brackets may technically be burning billions of dollars in corporate productivity and inciting an estimated $12 billion in betting globally but it’s difficult to ignore when your sports analysis is paired to go head to head with the analysis of the one that occupies the

12

cubicle next to you. The excitement of a Butler, VCU, Witchita State, or some other long-shot upsetting a top dog is always worth watching. It’s just win or go home, and before every game, each coach, student, and player thinks what if. The what if of every game, keeps people tuning in, brackets reviewed, and money pouring in. The NCAA itself has also raked in billions of dollars in television rights fees, ticket proceeds and merchandise sales, and CBS racks up more than a billion dollars in ad revenue each year. It’s big hopes, big money, and every March, big fun.

g lf tips The right ball makes a difference. Fundamentally, a golf ball performs differently depending on the type of golfer you are. For example you may be better off selecting Ball A over Ball B - if Ball A helps you control for excessive spin generated by the swing; or you may be better off selecting Ball C over Ball D, if you don’t crave distance, but instead want a ball that has increased feel around the greens. Maybe you’re a golfer looking for pure distance, but have low club head speed. Then, you just might be better off with Ball E. If you want to work the ball a bit more or want better stopping power hitting into greens then Ball F may be the best choice for you. In the event you’re an expert-level golfer, than the golf balls with the urethane cover is your best bet. We define an expert recreational golfer as someone shooting in 70’s to low 80’s. At this point, you have an excellent grasp of your swing and are capable of going on a run of birdies in your rounds. Golf balls with the urethane cover are long off the tee and will be beneficial towards your short game.

Choose the right golf ball for your game. Once you give an honest assessment as to the current state of your game, finding a matching golf ball will only enhance your round. Golf balls perform differently for different golfers.Ball speed, angle of impact, launch angle and spin rate on the ball are all fundamental mechanical factors that affect ball performance. Golf ball construction, compression and cover hardness are also critical parameters. Moreover, golfers have different demands on a ball in terms of distance, control and feel - and those demands change over time and depending on course conditions and location. In other cases, some golfers place emphasis on value for money in selecting a ball for play. In fact, the selection of the right ball requires matching the ball to your unique swing characteristics and game objectives. -Patrick Dodson

kept secret in Grayson when it comes to a resource for taking care of yourself. What started out as six Yoga and Circuit Training classes a week within ProMotion Physical Therapy, has quadrupled in size to support the needs of the community. ProMotion Physical Therapy has consistently provided the highest quality in physical therapy to the Grayson community for 15 years. The Wellness Studio at ProMotion grew organically from a shared vision between Amanda Pilz, President of ProMotion Physical Therapy, and Kelly Liddell, Program Director of The Wellness Studio at ProMotion. ProMotion Physical Therapy began offering wellness classes in the fall of 2013. Class sizes increased and The Wellness Studio quickly outgrew the gym space at ProMotion. In May of 2015, services expanded into the suite next door and can now accommodate larger class sizes with more class options, including Pilates and Barre.

Services also now include: nutritional guidance/ meal planning, personal training, educational workshops on health-related topics such as meditation, nutrition, flexibility, and balance/fall prevention to name a few. As growth continued, during December of 2015 renovations have been made to accommodate the need, while maintaining a warm, welcoming, more intimate setting. Come see what the buzz is about! Are you looking for ways to cut calories while continuing to eat the foods that you enjoy? Well it’s not as hard as you may think. Here are a few tips on how changing the way you eat will help with consuming less at meal time and will keep calorie cravings throughout the day under control.

2

1

Increase Your Intake of Soups and Salads. Filling up on lightly dressed salads or a bowl of vegetables or low fat chicken soup before main meals is an effective way to keep you from overeating. The fiber in the vegetables will help to curb your appetite and leave you feeling satisfied sooner. Try combining a salad as a starter and a nourishing soup as your main meal.

Stay hydrated. Consuming plenty of water and herbal tea will help keep you satisfied throughout the day. Staying hydrated will prevent you from eating when you are not actually hungry, since hunger is very easily confused with thirst.

3

16

Get enough sleep. Have you ever noticed how you tend to eat more when you are tired? We use food – especially carbohydrates – to deal with energy slumps and while you might get a quick burst of energy, this will soon fade. Being well rested will keep that “afternoon slump” at bay and keep you away from temptation. Studies also indicate that fatigue stimulates the production of the hunger inducing hormone, Ghrelin in the human body. Grayson Magazine

4 5

Eat from a smaller plate. Studies have shown that eating from a smaller plate tricks your brain into thinking you have a bigger meal to consume. A bigger plate will allow us to eat more; and we can easily underestimate the calories in our over-sized portions.

Slow down. It is a known fact that it can take your body up to 20 minutes to register that you had enough to eat. Rushing down your meal will only have you reaching for that second helping in no time.

THE POWER OF PRAYER

The answers to my questions are found through prayer and yet I would rarely pray. I’d bless the food before my children ate after preparing it and I would occasionally pray for successful days at work as I would commute back and forth to my office in Buford, but I can’t recall taking the

time to meet with God. I am quick to consult with my smart phone on traffic, weather, work related emails, and almost unconsciously use it for guidance throughout the day, but I’m perplexed as to why I would not spend time with someone who already knows my path and can help

20

me with my hurdles along the way. After growing up in church for a majority of my life, I found that my adulthood had become occupied with marriage, work, children, television, cleaning, Pinterest, etc. etc. I had allowed my relationship with God to fall equivalent to a casual Grayson Magazine

acquaintance like that of an old high school friend that I would reach out to once or twice a month or give a thumbs up to on their Facebook page. That’s insulting. He is so patient and forgiving. In my opinion, the entire Word was established to show us how to have a relationship with God or how to enter a life of fellowship with Him and for some reason I allowed all of the things throughout the day to push my prayer time with God lower and lower on my to do list. In December of last year I made a new commitment. Far more important than my new year’s resolution, which was to lose ten pounds, was to make a deliberate attempt to seek God. To start my day with an intentional seeking of a stronger fellowship with Him and to embrace the power of prayer. In 1Kings Chapter 3, Solomon asked for wisdom instead of wealth when God said, ‘Ask for whatever you want me to give you.’ He asked for wisdom! That’s inspiring. We’re faced with thousands of decisions throughout the day and money can only solve a handful of them, but wisdom is what keeps us from failing. For example, I began to pray for wisdom in raising my children; wisdom for my boss at work to make the right decisions, wisdom for my Buford Drive church pastor and in an election year, wisdom for the voters and candidates as a new man or woman will decide the direction of our great country.

Grayson Magazine

My new dedication to prayer has brought about significant changes in my life, but most importantly has renewed a relationship that was being neglected on my part. I’m reminded of my grandmother and how elated she was when I would pick up the phone to call her on a rare occasion. Imagine how God feels when we begin the day thanking Him and thinking of Him and asking for guidance and wisdom through prayer.

Mark 11:24 Therefore I tell you,

whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Most of us know someone who has benefited from the miracle of prayer which is amazing and surely God’s grace. My story is not as sensational. I’m just a 50 hour a week worker, dedicated spouse and parent of three. However, since December, I changed my prayer life and discovered something remarkable. I began to seek wisdom and found new priorities. I began to seek patience and found love. I began to seek guidance and found the power of prayer.

I began to seek wisdom and found new priorities. I began to seek patience and found love. I began to seek guidance and found the power of prayer.

Creekside Dentistry Grayson Magazine recently sat down with the Dr. Victor Koehler, Dr. Beau Upshaw, & Dr. Stewart Helton; the Dentists of Creekside Dentistry. After practicing dentistry in Lithonia for 25 years, Dr. Koehler had a dream of building a new office in Loganville with a total emphasis on the patient. From opening day of May 1, 2006, every decision that has been made and every action taken has been based on one central theme – what is best for the patient.

He joined the Creekside practice in June of 2014 and is excited to be a part of such a great team at Creekside Dentistry. “My wife and I were invited to dinner by Dr. Koehler and his wife Beth and after meeting them, I knew that this was the right practice for me. We immediately recognized that we shared the same passion for learning and commitment to the overall patient experience.” During his free time, Dr. Upshaw enjoys playing the drums, golf, and anything related to Georgia Bulldogs.

Dr. Helton comes full circle at Creekside; as a regular patient himself ten years ago, he now joins the team treating his own patients. He returned to his hometown to join his own Dentist, Dr. Koehler. “I noticed at this practice they are concerned for the patients overall health and not just their oral health. That’s why I decided that Creekside was the place for me. Educating our patients on blood pressure awareness, sleep apnea, and the fundamentals of taking care of yourself are all areas that we will monitor for our patients. Teaching the fundamentals of prevention will enable our patients to live healthier lives.”

Some things you should just leave alone. The first Zoolander was different and because it was different and blantly making fun of itself, it got away with some things that most movies cannot. However, that was 15 years ago. I’m not sure why they would attempt to catch lightning in a bottle a second time. Zoolander 2 is a wasteland of celebrity cameos, nonjokes, and callbacks to the first Zoolander. What makes Zoolander (#1) work is that underpinning the absurdist stylings of Ben Stiller—who returns as not only Derek Zoolander but also the co-writer and director of the sequel—is a fairly scathing satire aimed at the fashion industry. Released in theaters February 12th, Zoolander 2 opens with a dizzying recap of all that’s happened to “the really, really ridiculously good-looking” male model Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) and his runway rival-turned-friend Hansel (Owen Wilson). Derek has become a recluse in the snow-capped wilds of northern New Jersey, while Hansel has retired to the dunes of Malibu. Stiller has had incredible success in the sophomoric genre in the past and Will Ferrell’s screen presence is always worth at least a smirk, but the cast had difficulty pulling out any true comedy here and zero LOL moments. Watching over the top goofy works in different settings like his war-movie spoof Tropic Thunder or within the tense situations of Meet The Parents, but it did not do well poking fun of a target that’s fairly easy to make fun of such as when models take themselves too seriously. With movies that I am not fond of, I usually advise GM readers to wait for it to come out on Netflix, but when this comes out on Netflix, I would advise you to see if there is a presidential debate on, because that would be much more entertaining. -Anthony Baker

WOMEN AND LIFE INSURANCE Life Insurance Offers Protection for the Many Roles You Play in Life.

(wife, significant other, mother, chauffeur, chef, daughter, caretaker, breadwinner, and much more). Have you thought about what might happen to those that depend on you if something were to happen to you? Life insurance policies allow you to protect your most valued priorities, including your family and business, and help you prepare for your future. See for yourself how a life insurance’s death benefit can help protect the many roles you play every day: Wife/significant other: • A life insurance policy’s death benefit can provide financial protection for your spouse/significant other in the event of your death. • Life insurance can offer living benefits that can help you if you suffer from a critical, chronic or terminal illness in the future. • It can also offer tax-advantaged cash value accumulation potential that you can access at any time.1 MOTHER: • A life insurance policy offers a generally income-tax free death benefit2 that can help provide financial stability for your loved ones after you are gone. • It can also help you create a legacy to pass on to future generations. Daughter: • Life insurance can offer death benefit protection for those that depend on you. • It can also build potential cash value that can help provide funds to care for elderly parents. WORKING PROFESSIONAL/BUSINESS OWNER: • A life insurance policy’s death benefit can help your loved ones replace your lost income. • It can help safeguard your business interests and be used to create succession plans. •

Life insurance policy cash values are accessed through withdrawals and policy loans. Interest is charged on loans. In general, loans are not taxable, but withdrawals are taxable to the extent they exceed basis in the policy. Loans outstanding at policy lapse or surrender before the insured’s death will cause immediate taxation to the extent of the gain in the policy. Unpaid loans and withdrawals reduce cash values and policy benefits and negate any guarantee against lapse.

Technology and Travel Trends for 2016

I

n a recent interview on the CNN segment Facetime (Nov of 2015), Peter Kerkar, marketing director of the Cox and Kings group, stated that the next big trend in travel is provide complex dynamic packaging on a mobile platform. He states that travel is ever increasing at a record setting pace and that people are wanting more of an experience verses a vacation. What is an experience? It is a trip that provides a detailed itinerary in a way that is not available on the net today. For example, what if you could go to New York, stay at a nice hotel, have tickets to Broadway, do the Statue of Liberty Harbor tour, have prearranged transportation for these excursions, all in one package with just the click of a button? That is where the industry is trending and the company that provides this in a mobile platform will be the company to beat in the upcoming years according to Kerkar. There is also a trend in lower airfares as more and more discounted servicers enter the fray. WOW airlines now offers transatlantic travel at rock bottom prices. Examples include Boston to Amesterdam starting a $245 round trip. Where does technology play into these trends? We are seeing a rise in travel related technologies. Virtual reality 360 degree travel is here. Experience different destinations throughout the world through your smart phone. Look up, down, turn around and it is if you are actually there. Dreamtrips, airlines like Qantas, hotel chains like

Marriot are also experimenting with offering the VR goggles to their consumers (USA Today) Smart Cards are also on the horizon in 2016. Imagine walking into a hotel and the card checks you in and you go directly to your room. The cards can also hold your credit cards, loyalty cards, etc. All this seems like pie in the sky but will be available by the end of 2016. There is an app that is in Beta called Dreamtrips that is creating a travel community that takes the best of Facebook,Yelp and Trip Advisor and combines it into one app. You will be able to make friends, post and comment, book experiences like the ones described above, see reviews, do virtual reality 360 degree travel and much more. The app is currently available by invitation only. The world is becoming an increasingly smaller place and technology is driving the travel industry to unite people together in ways and more frequently than it ever has before. Whether it is virtually reality travel or staying in someone’s apartment in a city your are visiting, travel is becoming more accessible to the masses. The next big thing is just around the corner‌stay tuned to find out. THE WINE CORNER

34

Grayson Magazine

Grading Grapes A few steps to enhance the enjoyment of your wine: We’ve all seen those wine drinkers with a wine glass in their hand, sitting at the table treating it like a baton. Slightly intimidating until you realize that their just trying to utilize all senses in an effort to enjoy their glass of wine. (If you’re going to pay $40 for a bottle of grapes, it’s probably not a bad idea.) So we’ve compiled a few steps that can be applied to further enhance your next glass. Tilt, look, and examine the color of the wine. This will tell you how the wine will smell or taste as well as the age and the health of the wine. Swirl it in your glass. The air will release the aromas which will allow you to smell the subtle characteristics that the wine has to offer. Observe the legs - The legs or lines on the glass when held up to the light will tell you the alcohol level of the wine. Smell it - Breathe in the distinct aromas of your wine. Your nose is a compliment to your palate, so smelling it is the awakening of the senses before the taste. Take a sip but do not swallow yet. Instead, keep the wine towards the back of your mouth. As you sip your wine pucker your lips and softly slurp the wine which aerates and releases the flavors and aromas all at once. Enjoy the aftertaste. The longer the flavor stays in your mouth signifies the overall quality of the wine.

Happy gargling! Henri Fournier Grayson Magazine

Missing Family members Lola & Sunny Lola is a Pit Bull Terrier with short grey hair. She was last seen in Snellville near Pharrs road and Berkshire Court. Also missing is Sunny (See Picture Below). beer, such as a pilsner or IPA, as they are the easiest to turn green. If you’re a committed dark beer drinker you can still enjoy green beer, however you’ll be putting in way too much food coloring which isn’t healthy and will not just turn your beer green, but also your teeth.

Step 2 Add 4-6 drops of green food

coloring to the bottom of your beer glass. Opt for the liquid food coloring, as the gel will be more difficult to mix with the beer.

Step 3 Fill the glass with beer. The beer should automatically mix with the food coloring as you pour. Try to avoid stirring since that could cause your beer to end up flat.

Green beer is fun.

Drinking so many beers you feel green...not fun. According to the Surgeon General,, women should not drink alcoholic beverages during pregnancy because of the risk of birth defects. Consumption of alcoholic beverages impairs your ability to drive a car or operate machinery, and may cause health problems. Only those over the state required age are able to consume alcoholic beverages. Please drink responsibly.

It’s March in the Greater Eastside and that can only mean one thing. Weather wardrobe confusion. It’s freezing in the morning, but it gets up to 70 by midday and then back down to 30 by early evening. A large coat is not needed especially in the afternoon, but you’ll need something to wrap with when the cool breeze blows off of...I don’t know, Lake Lanier? Where does this freezing March breeze come from anyway? The best way to solve the see-saw shenanigans of spring is to equip yourself with a versatile scarf. By utilizing a scarf your fashionably layering your outfit and keeping your upper extremities warm in the early and late hours. However, it’s easy enough to stow away for the afternoon hours when a quick unraveling is needed now that it’s toasty outside and the heater is still blowing from the morning commute. A scarf is truly one of the few accessories that can be used during all four seasons but in March, it’s a must. Here are a few classic scarf tying methods that you may not have tried:

The Toss

The Waterfall

Drape scarf evenly around neck. Toss one side of scarf across the opposite shoulder so it falls behind you or along one side.

Drape scarf around neck so that three-fourths of the scarf hangs to one side. Wrap that side around neck twice, then take one corner of that end and tuck it in at the side of the neck.

The Infinity

The European Loop

Drape scarf evenly around neck. Tie ends together in a knot. Twist scarf once to form a figure-eight – one loop already around your neck and the other in your hands – and place second loop over your head.

Fold scarf in half, lengthwise. Drape folded scarf evenly around neck and slide the two ends through the loop created by the fold. Slide to adjust knot.

The scarf as an accessory will never die out. It will only continue it’s reign as the most powerful add-on and as we have already witnessed throughout fashion history, it’s quality and design will continue to evolve. Proving time and time again that it is the ultimate cold (and warm) weather staple. The scarves seen here can be found at the following locations: Macy’s, Nordstroms, Choies, Kohls, The Gap, Forever 21, Express, & Old Navy.

SNELLVILLE – More than 15,000 food items and $17,000 were collected during the Give Hunger the Boot Challenge to benefit the Southeast Gwinnett Co-op. Snellville which won the event the for second year of the competition versus Grayson. Grayson collected 8,623 food items to benefit the area’s needy, besting Snellville by nearly 2,000 items, but Snellville raised $15,187 in donations, beating Grayson’s $1,970. That ultimately put Snellville over the top. “It feels much better than last year,” said Councilman Dave Emanuel, who started Give Hunger the Boot with his wife Kathy. “But we’re mostly glad it benefits the Co-op which is the reason for the competition.” This year’s event raised 50 percent more in food and monetary donations, which Emanuel said showed residents of both cities were more involved this time around. In December, residents of Grayson and Snellville were asked to donate food items and money at each cities’ collection points. For more than a month volunteers transported food to the Co-op. School children brought cans from home, while others bought items to be given at drop off points. “It takes a whole community to do this,” said Laura Drake, the Co-op’s director. “It’s a blessing for the leadership of these cities to admit we have hungry people.” While the competition is over, the need for food for the needy is not. For information on how to donate to the Co-op,visit www.segwinnettcoop.org.
