Church floor plan According to its floor plan, a church is with: • A Greek-Cross Plan, when the four arms have the same length.

• A Latin-Cross Plan, when one arm is longer than the other three.

Pianta della chiesa La pianta di una chiesa può essere: • pianta a croce greca, quando i quattro bracci hanno la stessa lunghezza.

• pianta a croce latina, quando un braccio è più lungo rispetto agli altri tre.

NAVE • This architectural term defines the body of the church where the people gather for worship. This area extends from the main entrance to the altar.

• It usually contains pews and one or more aisles.

NAVATA • Questo termine architettonico definisce il corpo della chiesa, dove i fedeli si riuniscono per il culto. Questa area si estende dall’ingresso all’altare.

• Di solito, essa contiene panche e una o più navate laterali.

transept • The term refers to the tranverse space between the altar and the nave, giving the church a crossshaped plan.

• It lies north to south.

• In medieval times, churches evolved their plans from a Greek plan to a Latin plan.

transetto • Il termine si riferisce allo spazio trasversale che si trova tra l’altare e la navata e dà alla chiesa una forma cruciforme.

• E’ orientata nord - sud.

• Nel Medioevo, le chiese si trasformarono dalla pianta a croce greca a quella a pianta latina.

APSE • When the east wall behind the altar is round, it forms a semicircular area that is called an apse.

• In ancient times, large church buildings were modeled after a type of Roman public building that had such a wall.

ABSIDE • Quando il muro esposto ad est dietro l’altare è rotondo, esso forma un’area semicircolare che si chiama abside .

• In altri tempi , gli edifici religiosi si ispiravano ad un edificio pubblico romano, che aveva tale caratteristica.

Pulpit • It is an elevated structure, used in medieval times by priests for preaching. It projects from a pillar or wall, like a balcony and it is located in the nave.

• It is usually made of marble.

lintel • A lintel is a horizontal architectural structure, made of wood or stone.

• It stands across the top of a door or window, carrying the weight of the structure above it.
