t is always interesting to hear what people refer to as a Rat Rod. Many people see the cars referred to as Rat Rods as junk, and some are right. Even within the car kulture, many people do get a rust bucket running and consider it to be classified as a rat rod, when in reality, it is junk! Rat Rods fall into their own class. It takes artistry, fabrication, and a full functioning rod to make it a Rat Rod. We break it down while sitting in with an Atlanta builder and blacksmith named, Kevin Holloway, to many known as “Skeeter.

Q: Who or what influences you? A: As far as this style goes, I never had enough money to think about trying to restore a car. Besides there's already a million restored cars out there and people get tired of seeing the same thing. When I picked up welding and added that to the wrenches...creative juices started to flow...you're only limited by your imagination and what's available. That's what influences my builds, is looking at the original stuff and reverse engineering it or looking at what it can be instead of what it is. Nobody really influences me except for the out-of-the-box ideas that I see at the shows. For example, the Harley disk brakes setup I saw on the front of a Model T. Of course without all the big names that have been in this style, we wouldn't be anywhere. That goes without saying.

16

GREASE INC. MAGAZINE | greaseinc.com | APRIL 2015

Q: What are some long term goals? A: My long term goal all around business wise.....well, Jesse James can't do what he does forever... LOL!

Q: It's not just cars though that you work with. What is the skill you have taken on that seems to be another dying art? A: Being a blacksmith just adds to everything, it's a rare skill to find these days. Combining fire and steel in harmony to the end result of some beautiful functional art.

’m sharing chips and guacamole, while sitting on the rooftop deck over looking Oakland Cemetery, with one of the most inventive, persistent, hardest working men around, Chad Widner. You may remember this name from being mentioned in past articles, because that’s how much this man ‘get’s around’ the scene. Chad, since 1992, has been in and still is in a few bands from around the Atlanta area. He’s always had a love for music, whether it be playing, listening, or promoting, and when he and his brother, Russell, started Blue Druids, it put where he is today into motion. But, a few major events happened before becoming a rockstar and business man, and that’s where we’ll begin.

32

GREASE INC. MAGAZINE | greaseinc.com | APRIL 2015

f o e

Growing up an ‘army brat’, Chad’s life wasn’t typical. He was born in Madrid, Spain, and had been to more places before he could walk than most of us have as adults. I asked him when his interest in art came about...”in middle school, I was asked to create or market something for art class...I had always loved art on vinyl album covers, and wanted to try my own.” I asked if he remembered what it was he drew, but life has him remembering other things at the moment. Like, when he was in high school, in art class, he was asked to do another creation project, and he decided on designing a clothing brand called ‘Drop Em’ Jeans. We’re giggling about this, because this was the same time ‘break away’ pants and JNCO’s were in. “My art teacher wasn’t into the name of the brand, but I still passed the assignment.” It wasn’t until his Senior year that he found where his interest lied. Like

most high school kids, homework is the last thing on their minds, Chad fit right into that generalization. “I negotiated my way into a diploma,” he says. He was spending 4 hours a day in art class, and wasn’t sure he’d graduate, so he and his art teacher started talking. Chad found out that he made extra money after school ended by printing all the school t shirts. The deal made? Chad would print all the shirts while he was in class, so his teacher could hit the road right after the last bell. Cap and gown followed, and so did the beginning of garage screen printing.

33

The life of SAF

Shortly after the Widner family moved to Griffin, Ga, in 1991, Chad and Russell formed the previously mentioned, Blue Druids, and started the marketing process Chad got a taste of in middle school. The band, Suicidal Tendencies, was a huge inspiration in this process. “I’ve been to too many shows to count, and every time you walk in their store, there were so many choices of designs for shirts. I thought that’s how I want our band merchandised.” From the income of B.D., they started a clothing line. It wasn’t until around 2001, the band was on tour in Chicago, and a lady asked Chad to describe their ‘sound’, he responded by saying, “Southern As Fuck”. She then asked if he had that on a sticker. And, so formed the brand. It wasn’t immediately accepted. Chad ran the idea by several people, including his dad, and no

one understood or got it... and they all said they would never wear something that said such a crass word. Lucky for us, Chad didn’t let that hold him down. He says, “It amazes me that most people are more scared of the word ‘Southern’ than ‘f@*k’.” I guess it would be confusing for people that aren’t from the south to say they’re southern anything... but, “Southern isn’t a destination or a point on a compass rose, Southern is an attitude, conceived in food, music, art, fashion and hospitality.” he says. “We’re not creating a fad, or something that will be dated in a couple years, we’re creating an Americana,

The life of SAF Classic, Southern style aesthetic... a brand that brings people together, a brand that sparks conversation, and brand that Evokes Emotion!!” Between working in several bars, playing in bands, and almost getting another brand, “Regime”, off the ground; Chad’s brother, Russell, moved down to Tampa to pursue

backpack, went to Motorheads (a bar in McDonough, GA), and sold 10 shirts within 20 minutes to the 20 people that were in the bar. I immediately call Mike and tell him...he was completely shocked, and we both agreed I would go back that Saturday and try to sell more. I barely made it out of my car, and already had people stopping me in the parking lot, buying everything I had.” tattooing, and that’s when Michael Houlihan a.k.a. Asian Mike came into the family. He and Russell’s wife went to art school together and all became fast friends. After some wooing and other clothing line deals falling through, Chad had Asian Mike fly back and forth from Tampa to Atlanta to help design for S.A.F.. One day, even after all the naysayers, Chad decided he was just going to take a chance. “It was a Thursday, I transferred one of Mike’s designs onto my screen printer, printed 12 shirts I had laying around, put one on, and the others in my

in the parking lot, buying everything I had.” It caught on quickly, especially for Josh Jones, lead singer/guitar player for BeItTheMeans. He barely even knew Chad, and had S.A.F’s logo (the eye and crown) tattooed on his neck. Chad says he asked Josh, “why?”... Josh responded with, “you’ve created something that represents me, even if S.A.F. fell apart tomorrow, it still means something...I want people to think Southern as f@*k when they see Josh Jones.” And those of you who know this man, know he is the epitome of Southern, but Chad says, “Our products

are not designed to define the wearer, but to be defined by the wearer.” Which is why pretty much all genres of music have been backed by S.A.F. (check out Ryatt Fienix, Run The Jewels, TiNN MaNN, The Biters, Six Shot Revival, Order of the Owl, and Degradations). Chad and his crew, Asian Mike, Mick Martin, and Dave Yarborough, work day and night on making this brand stand the test of time. They’ve been building this empire the right way, and possibly the hardest way with the obvious highs and lows. But, all will pay off, some pretty big names have jumped on board, by just wearing S.A.F. gear. (See pictures) But, that’s

just it, he holds the guy in the front row at a metal show wearing their gear and the famous guitar player wearing the same shirt all in one spot. “You are, We are Southern As Fuck”. Chad has some really great opportunities on the horizon, so keep an eye out, because, as you know, “Kings Never Sleep”. Check out the website for new designs and for shows coming up through www. southernasfuck.com I appreciate you as a businessman, friend, and supporter, Chad Widner!!! I’m so proud to know you and be apart of the SAF Life and Family. Here’s to many more chill moments and ball’s to the wall action...cheers!!!

PIN UP... This isn’t

a costume.

S

o, you’re walking down the street and that one person says to you, “Hey, nice costume!” or “Hey, it isn’t Halloween yet!” Yes, that person who doesn’t understand our style or way of life as a Pin Up Girl, or even a Greaser Guy. So, of course we give them the death stare and fluff our petticoats at them. Maybe even try to explain this isn’t a costume, idiot, it’s our style, our lifestyle. Or we just point at them with our middle finger. Some people will never understand how much time and dedication is involved in this lifestyle. Being a pin up girl is a lot of work; usually it’s a daily process because we just don’t feel complete without our perfect winged eyeliner (that we have messed up at least 3 times and try 2 different liners because it’s not us, it’s the eyeliner who can’t get it right!). Oh, and our hair accessories! Hair accessories can make or break your outfit. I always try to match my hair flower to my heels or beads to make sure everything flows evenly. One big question we must ask ourselves is how high can we go with our heels? That, too, takes a lot of preparation for a pin up girl. Are they for work, shopping, a photo shoot, or is there a spectacular car show coming to town? Then we either buy new ones or we break out the showstopper stilettos you can see a mile away because they shimmer beautifully against that 57 Chevy we are posing beside! However, we are never officially complete until we decide: up or down, curls or rolls, etc. This is where we must allot enough time to make sure our hair is teased properly or our rolls are tight enough. The hair task is a job all by itself. We must have the right hair

45

products and brush. Our saving grace is those little shiny black or bronze almighty bobby pins! We have trails of these in our cars, purse, and sometimes in the washing machine. So, being a pin up girl is a process. You would think over time it would get easier, but it really doesn’t because we want to show off our skills at transforming into that 1940’s or 50’s bombshells we admire so much. You may wonder where all this knowledge came from? As we lounge on our settees and sip our martini’s … just kidding! We wish that is all we had to do! Though, in our spare time, we all watch tutorials on how to apply vintage style make up and how to do the biggest or tightest victory rolls imaginable. We also research online for hours trying to find that perfect pin up style inspired

outfit, or even have a designer custom fit us and make our dresses, and look for vintage accessories. We all network together daily on Facebook, twitter, Instagram, etc. with other pin up girls or groups all over the world. We are learning and sharing new ideas daily. We create pages for ourselves with a Pin up name and that is who we become. This is who we are. We are proud to be a pin up girl and dress and look the way we do. So, to those people who don’t understand and think this is just a costume or a phase we are going through, they need to remember that we are classy ladies with our perfect winged eyeliner.

hen asked to make a run to south Florida in February, it was an obvious "yes" from the crew. Not hard to leave Atlanta when the continuous threat of ice storms came barreling in through the southeast and the chance to hang out on the shorelines in Palm Beach, while hearing some great music and checking out vintage motorcycles at the Iron and Clematis. down the Florida Turnpike before finding refuge at a rest stop just an hour out from the rally. While at the stop, we had some old acquaintances reconnect with us, Ride or Rot, seeing that the Garage71 is kinda hard to miss! When we rolled into Palm Beach, we instantly got a taste of high class. It's like "How are we gonna blend in? Really?" When we turned the bend and came up on Clematis Street, it all made sense. area in the heart of Palm Beach is the best place to host Iron and Clematis Vintage Motorcycle Rally. The street was packed full of local eclectic shops and bars. About 4 blocks away from the actual beach and on the "other side" of the railroad tracks, Clematis Street was great to call home for the weekend. As we settled in and worked with the crew at the event, we instantly connected to Longboards due to our great friends,

infused cocktails, fine wines, and specialty craft draught beers. The best part was, after getting our initial introduction, we were invited back with stools reserved for us at their daily 2 for 1 Happy Hour from 4pm-6pm! Of course we were there! We were hooked up with the Lobster Tacos; two flour tortillas topped with Maine lobster, Napa cabbage pico de gallo, and avocado, served with

PBR. Immediately we were hooked on the location. Longboards is a New England Style fresh seafood restaurant with a casual feel. The menu is off the chain offering everything from Daily Fresh Catch, Live Maine Lobster, Hawaiian Tuna Tartar, Lobster Rolls, Skirt Steak Tacos, and Premium Beef Burgers. We found our home and place at the "Longboard" shaped bar with the killer staff making house made juice

salsa verde and the Lobster Mac & Cheese!!! There wasn't anything on the menu that would be turned down!!! Fresh and tasty is all we could remember, and wanting more! We were told, when back in town, to make sure we come by on any Thursday for their Bike Night. Clematis Street shuts down due to hundreds of M/C's and live music on the street. We are already planning our next trip!
