LETTER

A

normal start to the opening of this letter this month should be “Spring has Sprung,” but I believe it arrived sometime this past February. And, as many of us joked around, winter snapped back for a few days in March! I am not sure what Mother Nature is trying to tell us, but I will say, she’s a independent woman with a mind of her own... You cannot argue that! Now that Spring is here, you can see how our kulture has been waiting with anticipation. There are tons of new events popping up all over, and many with a lot of great potential. Of course, there are our long-time favorites, including Atlanta’s Motorama at the Atlanta Motor Speedway and Angel City Motorcycle Rally in Unadilla, Georgia. You can see our schedule is packed full of some awesome upcoming events. Check it out at: www.garage71.net/events. While talking on the subject of events, we are extremely excited to be hitting the road several times this year to some of our favorite locations, like New Mexico. We have been asked to set up in Sturgis this year, at the Full Throttle Saloon, as guests of Jackyl. The Rowdy Gents and Garage71 will be located at the infamous Sturgis Motorcycle Rally this summer. If you thought the road trip out west was amazing with some of the footage we shared, wait until you see what we share on this road trip. This is what it’s about. The destination is always a high point, but we have to take the time to enjoy the travel and journey as well. It’s the journey that creates the stories for years to come... Our kulture has been evolving for generations. This year we celebrate many anniversaries within our own local community to international commemorations. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Chevy Camaro. We celebrate the 40th year of the SKODA.

6

It is the 50th year for for the introduction of the Toyota Corolla, who still receives the best selling badge year after year. It’s the 75th year to celebrate the Jeep Wrangler. On the motorcycle side of our kulture, we celebrate 60 years of the Harley-Davidson Sportster 883. Come check out our display on Sunday, April 23rd, at the Summit Racing Equipment’s Atlanta Motorama at the Atlanta Motor Speedway for Vintage Day at the Bikefest portion of the show, where we will have a 1957 883 Sportster on display and the new 2017 Iron 883. Make sure you check out all the details online at: www. atlantamotorspeedway.com/events/motorama/ There is a special RIDE IN ticket price for motorcycles, where you can ride into the track! This is the show to see this year... There is so much to be excited for this season. We have the long anticipated opening of Tomahawk Harley-Davidson at the new Braves Baseball Field in Marietta! This is one venue you can not miss out on!!! Local Shade Tree Shop, Speed Standard in Canton has their grand opening party April 15th. We celebrate 10 years with Ink and Dagger Tattoo Shop, Saturday, April 22nd, beginning at noon. We enjoyed a crazy good time this past St. Patty’s Day. Daytona Bike Week had a great showing this year, rain and shine. And, just think, we are only getting started. Make sure you follow us online and tune-in at www. garage71.com. We have listed our social media tags below to either share with us some great shots or submissions. We are constantly looking for new rides to shoot. Anyone considering, please send to info@garage71.com Subject: Submission

Youngblood Kustomz has built a 1978 Kawasaki KZ Bobber. This bobber is definitely a one of a kind build. We love using old hot rod and antique parts and building one off parts to use on are build. So this bobber has a weld on hard tail. With a red and black custom metal flake paint job. We painted some old school scallops on the sportster tank and old dirt bike fender. Top that off with some custom foot pegs. Took a old sprocket and cut it in half for the foot pegs. Took a old Unity spot light and used it for the headlight and then took a old harley air cleaner made into the headlight cover. Then used some old school z handlebars. For the kick peddle want to use something a little different so we use a old pineapple grenade. And then for the taillight we converted a old school carburetor into the taillight with some bright leds. To a bottle opener mounted it on side of the engine case. Tons of other little details. The bobber was built all in house from Welding, Painting, Fab work, Fine tuning. This was a very fun and unique bike to build and ride!! Would like to thank my Wife and Family for there support. t is always great to hear the stories behind projects. This one is even better, because we are celebrating the 60th Year Anniversary of the HarleyDavidson Sportster at Summit Racing Equipment Atlanta Motorama. Now, we looked hard and crossed state lines looking for an original 1957 Sportster. With a failed attempt, we ran into this chap, Mike Jackson.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON

Mike met up with me at his shop. Of course after our initial meeting, my ADD kicked in and all I could see was a shop filled with tons of little projects and hidden treasures. From Cushmans, to Sears, from BSA's to Triumphs, from Allstates to even a Bridgestone and Panther, I was walking around with a giant grin on my face. I enjoyed all the stories and history of Mike and all his projects on hand. It was a rushed trip that lasted for hours if you know what I mean. "Introduced in 1957, the Sportster family were conceived as racing motorcycles, and were popular on dirt and flat-track race courses through the 1960s and 1970s. Smaller and lighter than the other Harley models, contemporary Sportsters make use of 883 cc or 1,200 cc Evolution engines and, though often modified, remain similar in appearance to their racing ancestors." (1) Come celebrate with us and see both the 1958 and the 2017 model of the Sportster at the Motorama Bikefest Stage this April 22nd and 23rd. A show within a show at the Summit Racing Equipment Atlanta Motorama presented by RacingJunk.com, the Motorama Bikefest will showcase some of the nation's best custom built, vintage, competition, restored and special interest motorcycles. The Motorama Bikefest is open for all motorcycle enthusiasts to ride in, enter for the 'two wheel' awards including the best Harley-Davidson, best paint, best chassis, dealer's choice and more. These awards will be chosen by the industry professionals. (Continued to page 18)

t’s hard to believe we’re already at year three of the Nashville Boogie Vintage Weekender! If you’re unfamiliar with the event, it’s a celebration of mid-century America bringing together people who live, thrive, and continue the lifestyle of 1950’s life. Across five stages there’ll be over 80 live performers, a vendor row with 50 vendors from around the globe, and one of the largest indoor car shows you’ll see. If you’ve never been, this is the year you should go. If this isn’t your first time, then I’m sure the bug has already bitten you and you’re ready for the show to start.

30

greaseinc.com | APRIL 2017

Jason Galaz decided to turn his dream into a reality and put together the largest vintage weekender on the east coast. He wears multiple hats all year round, putting all his spare time and effort into Muddy Roots and Nashville Boogie Vintage Weekender. It shows, because you’ll be hard pressed to find someone complaining about how many amazing bands, beautiful cars, and impressive list of vendors he’s brought together. When NBVW began, people began to whisper, “How could someone put an event so close to Viva?” Easy, he had a goal and set his mind to make it happen. Just like in “Field of Dreams”, he built it and the people came. If you’re a fan of classic cars, rat rods, and anything vintage, then the car show is one of the must-see happenings over the weekend. Whatever your wheel preference, you’re guaranteed to see cars that’ll leave a lasting impression. Also, you’ll find us providing music in the car show once again and there may be a few surprises in store! The music. This is the piece of the puzzle that brings it all together. If those hillbilly cats back in the early 50’s hadn’t been recorded, would we even give so much of our time and passion to the era? Thank goodness for the revival of this sound and it keeps getting bigger, better, and downright crazy! This year’s Nashville Boogie Vintage Weekender has brought together some of today’s fiercest performers. The Delta Bombers, A Man Called Stu, Jack Rabbit Slim, and Planet Rockers to name a few. Also, don’t miss seeing The Queen of Rockabilly, Miss Wanda Jackson! Across from the Opryland Resort is the Nashville Palace, where you’ll find several of the weekend’s performers. It opened its doors in 1977 and has seen legends such as Jerry Reed, Randy Travis, and George Jones. This year, you’ll find their stages full with acts such as Webb Wilder, The Royal Hounds, Chuck Mead, and Asleep At The Wheel among many others. This is a hot spot you shouldn’t skip! The pre-party for the event kicks off Wednesday May 17th at Donelson Bowl, and afterward the trail will take you to the door of the Nashville Palace. Garage 71 and Grease Inc. Magazine have been working with Jason since the first Muddy

32

greaseinc.com | APRIL 2017

Roots back in 2010. Back then, people didn’t think the event would draw, but like Jason, we saw the bigger picture and knew he was onto something. Since then, we’ve been excited for Jason as his events have grown and we’ve been right there at the eye of the storm watching and encouraging. We’ve been a proud sponsor, supporter, and friend since day one and we’re enthusiastic to return this year. Last, but not least, how can you write about Nashville Boogie and not mention one of the biggest stars of the show, The Opryland Resort! The beauty of the Opryland Resort is difficult to define. On one hand, you have this historic hotel built with southern living and hospitality in mind. On the other hand, you have this expansive indoor structure where you can literally walk for hours, getting lost among the beautiful foliage and design. In here, you’ll find most of the event’s stages – you’ll also find the indoor car show at one end of the event hall. One of the largest car shows in the southeast, all under one roof of this historic facility. Explore the many stores and restaurants the resort has to offer. Then, when you need to give your feet a break, take a ride on a boat along their indoor river, filled with water from around the world. Whether you’re a fan of rockabilly, western swing, doo wop, or just kustom culture in general, you’re guaranteed to find something entertaining at Nashville Boogie. One thing Jason does is listen, learn, adapt, and up his game. He’s passionate about making sure people are entertained and one thing is certain, those in attendance will be entertained! We at Grease Inc. Magazine are already packed and ready to party. We’ll see you at Nashville Boogie!

“ OUR RANGE OF SHAVING PRODUCTS IS A SAVING GRACE FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO MAINTAIN A CLOSE SHAVE WITHOUT THE USUAL DISCOMFORT THAT COMES WITH THE DAILY ROUTINE. PLUS, IT KIND OF RUINS YOUR ‘DO WHEN YOU’VE GOT VISIBLE RAZOR BURN. “

This month we took the Shave Cream and the Aftershave Moisturiser and applied them to the winter beard cleaning up to traditional chops for the summer season ahead. "Uppercut was born through a frustration of using mediocre products that didn't suit the vibe of their shop; products that were geared towards the man's wife rather than the man himself fueled the boys to create something they would use and be proud to promote." Uppercut Deluxe Shave Cream is a lotion based shaving cream containing natural ingredients of cooling Menthol and Coconut Oils. We took the shave cream and placed a dime size bullet in our shaving mug. With a damp Badger brush, we worked up a rich lather prior to applying to a freshly rinsed face. The shave created a smooth comfortable shave leaving the skin soft and

smooth. A quick rinse when finished before applying Uppercut Deluxe Aftershave Moisturiser. Uppercut Deluxe Aftershave Moisturiser is a light weight aftershave lotion for the skin that leaves the skin with a soft matte finish and a fresh calming sensation. We placed a small dime size drop on the tips of the fingers and lightly rubbed in after the face and neck area after shaving. "Our range of shaving products is a saving grace for anyone who wants to maintain a close shave without the usual discomfort that comes with the daily routine. Plus, it kind of ruins your ‘do when you’ve got visible razor burn. " Shaving doesn’t have to be tricky with the right products on your side. The perfect combination of eucalyptus oil and coconut oil will help to control blemishes and spots, without any harsh treatments. You’ll be well groomed and know that you’re looking after your skin." The Rowdy Gents and the 17th Street Parlor are authorized dealers of Uppercut Deluxe. You can pick up any of the Uppercut Deluxe products where ever you see the Rowdy Gents pulling in to a show on the East Coast. You can also order online at www.17thstreetparlor. com and have Uppercut Deluxe sent right to your door. Spring Cleaning in Style! O

ut with the old and in with the new, clothing that is! It’s time for Spring cleaning! I always get the urge this time of year to purge old stuff. Although I am somewhat of a clothes hoarder, I do try to donate items I have not worn in a long time. Maybe it’s all the new beautiful growth on trees and blooming flowers. It’s very refreshing to me. Spring started so early this year, it’s crazy. Our cars are already getting covered with a light yellow haze and I know that means the heavy pollen is right around the corner! That part of Spring here is not so fun. There will be plenty of dusting, washing, sweeping, and vacuuming in the near future. My suggestion is when your chores are done, head on over to the Joanie Clothing site and treat yourself to some gorgeous new clothes! Joanie Clothing has the most adorable, unique designs. My pretty, light blue, vintage-inspired dress is called the Bonnie Blue Frill Tea Dress. It’s made from a sheer material, with a built in slip lining. The frilly detail, cloth covered buttons, peter pan collar, and pin tucks make this one of the prettiest dresses I have seen! I love the puffy sleeves, too. The fit is very flattering and it comes with a thin white belt to accentuate your waist. It zips on the side. This style is just what a lady needs for Spring outings. It’s comfortable, yet dressy enough for a brunch, and modest enough for a church gathering. Needless to say, I am thrilled with it and will be wearing it a lot! At Joanie Clothing you will find everything from dresses and skirts, to jumpers, cardigans, blouses, and accessories. You can find UK sizes 8-22 there as well. They are passionate about making beautiful, high quality clothes that many women can enjoy and feel beautiful in! For my two looks in the Bombshell Vanity Article this month I wore my Heather Heels from Bettie Page Shoes. They are so pretty in white and silver, with leopard bottoms. The heel is a great height since it’s not too tall. It’s perfect for house work, haha! I also wore vintage earrings and hat. I think the possibilities are endless for the way you could accessorize this dress. Photos: Pinup Power Photography

Find a Shop that Works By Nick Skarzenski

C

hoosing a shop to work on your bike or your hotrod…. Did you ever notice that many shops you go to seem to always bad mouth the other local shops they compete against? Stop and think about that for a moment, if they are so good, then why are they worrying about what another shop is doing? Look around that shop, I am willing to bet that it is either empty or everything inside of it is thoroughly covered in a heavy layer of dust, instead of being worked on. Don’t waste your time on shops that can’t perform/deliver or waste time worrying about the competition. Look for organization, honesty, and confidence. If you walk in the door and feel like they don’t have a system for getting you checked in, record your issues or service needs, and give you a timeline for completion……well, maybe you need to find another shop. You have invested your hard-earned

44

greaseinc.com greaseinc.com 2017 | NOVEMBER | MARCH 2016

money in your ride and it should be treated as though you are a customer they care about. This doesn’t mean it needs to be a factory dealership when you walk through the doors, where someone greets you with a tablet and a stylus, and they have separate people for service orders and parts sales. It just means that someone should appear as though the information you are giving them isn’t going to get misplaced, and you don’t see 40 bikes that need work, and one lonely mechanic who is busy playing on Instagram instead of focusing on what he is supposed to be working on. Lastly, don’t blame others if your bike has been in the shop for 4 months. If your mechanic isn’t getting it done, go get your property and take it to someone who will. There are plenty of shops out there who can do a good job and do it in a reasonable amount of time, go find them.
