s the brisk winter air blows Nordic winds from the North, the crew heads south for most of February! That’s right, go where the warmth and sunshine resides in my home state of Florida! But before we hit the road, we have to get ready for the riding season. Make sure you go by your local chop shop and get your ride thoroughly checked out. I want to thank Doc Slicks for going through my Heritage before the long spring list of rides and season packed full of events. Speaking of events, come on out to Rev. Andy’s HollyFest 8 at the Star Bar to continue our Cabin Fever festivities. We will be then heading down to West Palm Beach for the Vintage Iron and Clematis Motorcycle Festival. This is one for the books and worth the ride. I have already been joking about I may be in shorts more than jeans this winter! If you are stuck in the cold and want to warm up your riding partner, make sure you head out to the Blue Balls and Frozen Heart Run at Porterdale Bar & Grill. We get a treat this year as we will be right back down to Florida a few weeks early of Bike Week for the Daytona 500. We will be setting up camp early and staying for the duration of Bike Week. Hope to see you there!!! One of our slogans this year is a tradition with “Rock the Vote.” No matter if you are for the TV celebrity, the candidate who continues to avoid prosecution, or the several other great potentials, it is critical you get informed with the facts. There is still time to register to vote and it is imperative that we all take part in the process. We don’t get political in our rag. It is not our style. But, we will say we do vote and we vote to ensure our freedoms are not taken away and that we continue to fight to gain more of our hard earn monies so we can continue to grow and provide some of the best content on the east coast.

r don’t. Nowadays information for what might be wrong with your hot rod or bike is everywhere. I hear day after day the words... ”I did some research” and it makes me cringe every time because what I hear is “I was reading forums.” Forums are useful when used properly, however

I have friends who are totally into hot rods and motorcycles but are not nearly as mechanically astute as they think they are, and yes they are among the people answering your forum questions incorrectly. Once in a while I will read through answers just for pure amusement. One

in particular always stands out in my memory because at least 10 people offered someone the same incorrect answer and when one real experienced mechanic offered a correct response, everyone bashed his answer and confirmed their own offerings with ridiculous claims to decades of experience “building” hot rods or working as mechanics. I could go on and on with this subject but I would rather offer you advice. If you don’t know then you should at least know whom to ask. Go to a shop, not a shop where everyone stands around with their arms crossed flapping their gums about how much they know, but a real shop where if the person you ask doesn’t know, they go into the back and bring you someone who does. You wouldn’t ask a stereo installation tech how to time the ignition in your street rod, so why take the advice of your barber on cam selection or valve seat pressure. Most good mechanics will be

happy to offer advice on something they are so passionate about that they decided to pursue it as a career. Chances are, if they don’t, then they will point you to someone who can help. If all else fails, read a book or two. Everything we do in the traditional hot rod industry is based on stuff that has been done before. The first time I personally decided I wanted to start rebuilding engines, I went online for one thing... to buy three books on rebuilding the same type of motor. I had already been a mechanic for years, so I had a good understanding on everything involved, but was wise to realize I did not know enough yet. I read all three, then built my motor. Along the way I had a couple of questions and guess whom I asked? A friend of mine who has been building race motors as a legitimate business for 20 years. You can always learn more but you don’t need to know it all, you just need to know who to ask. Take it from me!

ames Byron Dean was born on Feb. 8th, 1931. One of America’s first teenage idols, Dean was lost to us at the early age of 24. He is best known for 3 films: East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause, and Giant. James Dean was still nominated for two Academy Awards and remains the only actor in history to be nominated twice after such a premature death. James Dean, in our sub-kulture, is best accepted as the sweet heart bad boy. Here is the guy that proves to be bad, but has the character to lay

His personal goal was to one day race in the Indy 500, but his career did not allow for that goal path. down the charm. Both on and off film, Dean was actually a true rebel. He had a passion for racing and love for cars that could go fast. His two known favorites were his Triumph Tiger T110 and his Porsche 356. Dean raced both professionally and as a novice. His personal goal was to one day race in the Indy 500, but his career did not allow for that goal path. On September 30th, 1955, Dean was preparing for an upcoming race. James picked up his new Porsche 550 Spyder known as “Little Bastard.” His mechanic, Wutherich, accompanied

12

Dean in a drive to break in the car from Los Angeles to Salinas. During the ride back, it was discovered that Dean was ticketed for speeding as he broke in his new ride. Soon after at approximately 5:15 PM on Route 466, Dean’s Porsche 550 was struck by a 1950 Ford Tudor at an intersection. Dean was pronounced DOA. We want to celebrate our heritage and influences that continue today within our kulture and lifestyle. From the first movie star teenage heart throb, to the rebel racing his cars, James Dean helped shape the future on the Greaser lifestyle. Live Fast and Free!!!

woke up to the news that the world’s greatest rocker had lost his short battle with cancer the night before, and the first thought that went through my head was, ‘is this real?’ There have been rumors floating around for awhile about him overdosing on drugs and alcohol, and I thought this could just be another rumor. Well, it was

more like I had hoped it was. Truth is, the demons that he had were nothing compared to what really took over his body and ultimately stole him from us too soon. Lemmy Kilmister, 70, died 2 days after being diagnosed with that asshole of a disease. It makes you start thinking of mortality, it’s inevitable, even for a man who Lars Ulrich of Metallica told, “was obligated to live forever”. Lars was one of many rock n roll legends who attended Lemmy’s memorial service in the Hollywood Hills in January. Dave f’n Grohl called him his “hero”!

Lemmy Kilmister Slash “felt honored to be his friend...his music and personality will last forever.” Judas Priest’s, Rob Halford, referred to him as “Lord Lemmy...a true rock n roll maverick”. Just mentioning those world famous musicians, in their own right, talking about how great this one man was makes me grateful for having been introduced to him and his music. He was something to everyone. And closer to home, one of Atlanta’s own, Blaine Cartwright of Nashville Pussy, has been hit pretty hard by Lemmy’s death...

“I simply can’t believe he’s gone. That’s not just an expression, I really don’t believe he’s gone. We probably played more than 100 shows with Motörhead over the years, and I hung out with Lemmy a lot during those tours. I know a lot about world history and old rock n roll, so we talked all the time. And until his recent illness, he’d always text me back immediately when I texted him. We were both kind of hard rock intellectuals. We might have both been teachers

if we hadn’t picked up guitars. He was a huge supporter of Nashville Pussy...both of our bass players got to know him immediately (Karen and Corey). There are certain moments I had with ‘Lemmy the Icon’, like snorting coke off his iron cross, that I’ll never forget. But, my favorite moments were with ‘Lem’, just talking with my friend.” I asked Blaine if NP had plans to do anything special as a tribute during their tour... “We’re about to go out with Reverend Horton Heat. I’m sure I’ll be singing Ace of Spades with them at the end of every show, but as far as our set, I have nothing planned. The reason is because I really don’t want to remind myself constantly that my friend is dead. I haven’t really even dealt with it yet. “ Death is tricky. We don’t know whether to mourn or celebrate a life. Just from what I know about Lemmy, I truly believe he’d want us to celebrate him. Whether it be with tattoos, re-naming a Jack n Coke to the “Lemmy” (see note below), blasting his music everyday, or making pancakes in the shape of his mole, let’s throw him a party!! Let’s remember him and everything he’s done to make this world of rock a better place. And rest easy knowing he’s still out there, a piece in all of us, a ride on the radio wave, a tribute being played live on a stage somewhere. He’s out there. I couldn’t think of a better way to end this article than with the words of his son, Paul Inder, “Travel well my dear father. You are back out on the road for a longest tour to the great gig in the sky.”

ack in September 2015, a local dealership, Thunder Tower Harley-Davidson in Atlanta, Georgia, created an event tasking a select group of builders to a fun and friendly competition to transform a used Police edition to a oneof-a-kind custom motorcycle. Greg Wingo of Unknown Customs was one of the builders approached and walked away with the title at this year’s inaugural Build Off. Greg is no stranger to competitions or creating some badass rides. Unknown Customs is currently located in Gainesville, Georgia. The shop is located off the beaten path. You don’t hear the banjos playing, so you know you are safe, especially when you walk in and begin to look at all the projects Greg and his small crew can create! Unknown Customs Inc. was established in 2005 in Gainesville, Georgia by owners Greg Wingo and Chris Wingo. “Any crazy idea you have in your head, we will make it happen!” Unknown Customs has years of experience with all styles of bikes giving them the unique ability to build you a completely custom bike. “Whether it’s a bagger or sports bike, you can be sure that the style and quality will not be beat!” Unknown is truly a one stop shop for everything you need for your ride. Parts sale, paint, fabrication, motor work, service.. all done in house. “We have a true passion for building and we believe it shows in our work.” “Whether you are looking for a complete build or just need an oil change, we will take care of your bike as if it was our own.” Give Unknown Customs a call and let them know what they can do for you! Old School Barber Shoppe

A

s a girl growing up in a salon, I’ve never really been exposed to barber shops. Except for what I’ve seen in old black and white, and Greaser films. And even then, the kind of art form portrayed fascinated me. 37

Fast forward to about 6 months ago, when I was introduced to my first REAL barber shop...Old School Barber Shoppe. My man kept talking up this place, and every couple Friday’s, I knew he’d be spending the afternoon in the chair, getting the full treatment, and there was no need to bother chatting with him. That’s HIS time. I imagined all the guys in there holding glasses of bourbon in one hand and cigars in the other, laughing with each other about how their mechanic

tried charging them double for a single service, and what their girlfriends and wives did the other day. It was an intriguing mystery. Until one day I got an invite to come to his appointment to meet his barber and shoppe owner, Sherrie Mensink, and get a taste of what happens in a man’s world. To say I was excited is an understatement. I might have even been a little nervous! Stepping

foot into a world I had only day dreamed about?! The day comes...I arrive in downtown Columbus, Ga, walk through the doors, and follow a hand crafted sign up a wooden flight of stairs, lined by original brick from an old building modernized, complete with framed barber shop art. I walk through the door and am completely blown away by the space. Huge floor to rafter windows, original hard woods, exposed brick, antique barber chairs and dresser stations, a comfy sink-into-the-couch sitting area, and the sweetest voice saying ‘Welcome! May I get you a drink?!’ Uhhhh...yea!!! That sweet voice is Sherrie’s mama, Angie, but, just call her mama. It’s almost exactly how I imagined, without the cigars (which might be a different story on a very special occasion). He introduces me to Sherrie, and I immediately see what all the ‘fuss’ is about. She’s super cute,

Vanilla Macaroons Ingredients: 3 egg whites 4 oz blanched almond meal

(you can also use whole almonds)

1 ½ c powdered sugar 42

½ c granulated sugar ½ tsp salt 1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise, and seed scraped out of pod

GREASE INC. MAGAZINE | greaseinc.com | FEBRUARY 2016

Instructions

1. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. If you want to make sure your macaroons are all the same size, trace 2-inch circles onto the parchment paper with a pencil, keeping a good amount of space between the circles. Place the paper pencil-side down on the baking sheet. 2. Place egg whites in the bowl of a stand mixer with the whisk attachment set. Let the egg whites come to room temperature while you carry out the next step. 3. Place almond meal and ½ c of the powdered sugar in a food processor. Place the remaining 1 c of powdered sugar in a medium bowl and set aside. Pulse the food processor so that the almond meal and powdered sugar combine, and form very fine grains. (If you are grinding whole almonds, this will take a good 5-10 minutes of pulsing.) Pass the mixture through a fine mesh strainer into the bowl with the powdered sugar. There may be a few tablespoons of almonds that don’t make it through the strainer, and that’s okay. You can toss them or save them for another use. Stir the contents of the bowl together. 4. Beat the egg whites on medium until foamy. Slowly add the granulated sugar and salt and continue beating until soft peaks form. Add the vanilla bean seeds and continue beating until almost-stiff peaks form. They should be somewhere between soft and stiff peaks - when you lift the whisk out of the bowl, the egg whites should stand up and maybe just start to curl over. (See photo in blog post) Knock the whisk on the edge of the bowl to remove the egg whites from the whisk.

5. U sing a rubber spatula, fold in half the almond/powdered sugar mixture into the egg whites. Fold in the remaining almond mixture until evenly combined. The batter should have the consistency of lava, although I’ve never seen lava first-hand, but I can imagine. When you lift the spatula out of the bowl, the batter should drop in a thick ribbon, and should melt back into the main batter after a few seconds. This is the trickiest part of the process, and you get the feel for it the more times you make them. 6. Fill a pastry bag (I like disposable ones) with half the batter. Twist the top of the pastry bag closed. Cut a hole in the tip of the pastry bag, and pipe circles onto the prepared baking sheets. If you drew circles onto the parchment, fill until the batter just reaches the edges. Make a little swirly movement when you’re done piping each circle to keep a peak from forming on top of the cookie. Don’t pipe too close to the edge because they spread a tad. 7. Tap the baking sheet on the counter a few times to bring any air bubbles to the surface. If drying, use a hairdryer set on low and gently wave it over the macs until the surface of the circles starts to dull. 8. B ake macaroons one tray at a time at 300°F for 7 minutes. Rotate the pan and bake another 7-8 minutes longer. Let the macaroons cool on the pan, then gently peel from the parchment. They should come off easily. Sandwich two cookies together, feet side facing in, with jam, buttercream, or whatever suits your fancy!
