H

appy New Year!!!! It’s the new year, so what does that mean to you? I know there are countless of far reaching resolutions circulating social media. Everyone needs to loose weight. Well, isn’t that a given anyway? How about this, don’t worry about the weight and just focus on how to live better! Focus on, maybe I don’t need 10 big macs every week when a piece of fruit is just as good. Why do we do these things? What is so hard? I understand that the quarter pounder with McD’s fries fresh out of the fryer is great, especially fresh screaming hot fries, but come on. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking over this past year. Some call it being absorbed, but I call it real. We are going through some serious changes in a life right now, and what better way to start a new year with really reflecting? Though I can’t and won’t take all the time here to air all my thoughts, I will say as humans, not people, we need to wake up. When we bite at tax cuts giving Americans $2000 dollars back per household per year, some may think that is a good start, I think of it as insulting. Now, if you said ten thousand back of my hard earned money, you have my attention, but is $2000 per household really that much to impact dramatically any family? The real answer is no, it’s not. Now, I am not gonna start the year off down; as a matter of fact, I will do the opposite, even with the start of this editorial. This year, Garage71 and Grease Inc. heads into our 10th year, which is amazing in itself. We have worked through our own internal challenges, doing our very best to stay true each and every month. We have provided consistent content, real content, not just recycled garbage and stories of absolutely no interest to you. We have changed the local competitors way of how they produce their magazine, as they try to recreate what we have invented. We travel the country to some of the most amazing shows, meeting some genuine people who have shared interesting life stories and experiences with us. We get to take part in other people’s events and shows, enjoying music, the lifestyle, the scenery, and the local cuisine. We have created signature events either for clients or as stand alone presentations of ourselves as a crew; shows like Rockabilly Rumble, Rockabilly Reckoning, the Luau from past days, and Hell on Wheels to name a few. Our crew has become family to each other. We have fought. We have laughed. We have shared some really deep things with each other, but we are always there together. This year is about taking all the great things we have already accomplished, and now making them grow more as we head into a national market, and in some cases, international with some amazing people, like Sabina Kelley out of Australia in this month’s Grease Inc. Our footprint is growing and has grown from this little tiny pamphlet 10 years back, to now a consistent Kustom Kulture magazine nationwide, capturing life moments with some incredible people with amazing talents and life experiences. I am extremely grateful to have made it this long in a very challenging industry filled with egos and attitudes. I am looking forward to sharing with you in 2018 some of the best moments caught in the lense of a camera, and supporting a kulture I deeply believe in.

LETTER This month’s issue is our infamous Ink & Oil awards. For the first time, we took the awards live at the Strand in Marietta Square with Rev. Andy hosting and enjoying live music from Kitty Rose and the Rattlers, the Screamin’ Demons, and Atomic Boogie. We gave tribute to two amazing people in our local scene including Tony Dinneweth and JB Walker. Tony, you will forever be missed by your family and friends. You have touched the souls of many people and have made such a positive impact on the local scene. May you always be remembered. JB Walker, received a lifetime recognition at Ink & Oil for over 30 years in entertainment. JB has touched so many people worldwide supporting troops while during service and war times. JB has performed at the iconic Iron Horse Saloon for decades. JB has always been there for his community, peers, and fans. JB’s heart has provided entertainment for countless charities and thankless acts of kindness. It is with people like JB, that we as a sub-kulture, can look up to and say “hey, we may look different, but we all matter as people.” The Ink & Oil awards is recognition from you, our readers, our listeners on Garage71, our peers. It is support from fans nationwide acknowledging accomplishments of people, artists, establishments, and brands we all support. This is a snapshot of a community coming together to roast some great life experiences and enjoying the success of others. It is about a kulture coming together and being supportive and sharing in the praise of another’s success. We have tallied up the thousands of responses this year from a nationwide audience. The recognition comes to close one year, as we head into another amazing opportunity in 2018. To everyone that was nominated, congratulations. To everyone awarded, thank your patrons and peers for all the support and recognition of your success throughout 2017. May each and everyone of you have a tremendously prosperous new year.

t's hard to believe it's 20 years later, but the Squirrel Nut Zippers took Christmas by the antlers and rode that sleigh to the tallest chimney this winter! Kicking off the Christmas Caravan, with "Jimbo" Mathis at center stage.

GREASE INC. MAGAZINE

Squirrel Nut Zippers formed back in the resurgence of that small swing movement during the early to mid 90’s with an eclectic gypsy style swing out of the foothills of the Carolinas in Chapel Hill. Today, Jimbo Mathis reunites the Zippers for a revival with the exciting Christmas Caravan tour. This ten city tour takes the current line up of Squirrel Nut Zippers through Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, and Florida. We were able to catch up with Jimbo and the Zippers at the SOLD OUT show at City Winery down at the Ponce City Market, the first weekend in December. We were so excited to see their return, and curious of the turn out as it was not heavily publicized. Actually, even we stumbled upon the show while enjoying an evening at City Winery just a week before the show.

The show was amazing and the energy so high. You would picture this was the original line up of Squirrel Nuts Zippers from the 90's with the amount of synergy these guys have. From favorites like "Put a Lid on It", to "Good Enough for Granddad", to holiday treats like "Carolina Christmas", to "Indian Giver", and of course "I'm Coming Home for Christmas", the SNZ entertained all of us "Zipsters" with plenty of Christmas cheer. The City Winery was the best place to get this up close and personal show. Not only was every seat in the house great, but the band took the time after their show and meet and talk with any interested fan. After seventeen years, a lot can change and happen, but with Jimbo, you can see this is where is wants to be, entertaining and enjoying a great crowd's response and participation. I think we are gonna see the Squirrel Nut Zippers a lot sooner than another 20 years from now. With a new album anticipated in 2018, we are excited for Jimbo and the caravan as they travel as gypsies city to city, embarking on their current winter tour.

Cheers! 12

JB Walker

A LIFE OF MUSIC

W

hen you ask a man about his life, you’re gonna get the good, bad and sad, JB Walker tells me as we’re sitting across the table from each other. Both of us almost gagging from the nastiest shot of warm, gold tequila we’ve ever tasted. That coming from a man with a motto of liking his tequila like his women ... hot and nasty ... says a lot. “It’s a pirate’s life; Captain Morgan ain’t got shit on me.” Honey, ain’t that the truth. Captain Walker’s been in the business of biker music for over 30 years, and as many times as he’s been questioned about affiliation in the biker community, you can ask any brother the same question, and it’s the same answer across many roads: “JB’s a pirate.”

18

greaseinc.com | JANUARY 2018

Martin was gay before he did; he wears his shoes too big.” We both start laughing, loudly, in a tiny place. He says he met him in a casino in Panama, but they eventually became friends. Martin was even involved with the Make A Wish Foundation, which led JB’s daughter, Erica, to meet her favorite singer and guest star from General Hospital. He then tells me about his mojo ring. A ring that found him. Any business that needed his signature, he would pour hot wax on it and stamp it with his ring instead. “Everybody knew whose seal that was!” And it seems everyone knew JB. He tells me about a time in Nashville on Music Row, he and one of his sidekicks were shimmying up poles and slappin’ ‘em with Cheap Whiskey Band stickers (you can still see some of these), and out walks Kris Kristofferson. Kris looked up and asked what the hell they were doing, “Advertising!” Walker said, “Johnny Cash was the man that got Coe out of jail, but Kristofferson took him out on tour.” “You’ve always got to have a mentor and a protege. Mine are DAC and Dustin Lee Benefield.” (a man and band you should get to know). 30 years of playing every bar and rally there is. The Pirate has paved the way for many biker bands and will continue to hold it down. “The Cheap Whiskey Band’s recording a new album, “Roll Hard Forever – Forever Roll Hard” and has a tell-all book titled “25 years of Daytona.” JB Walker is my mentor and one of the best guys I’ve ever met. He’s taken me in and supports everything I do. We’re both huge fans of each other. From being the best daddy he can be to his late son, JB3, his late daughter, Erica, and his ‘life-saver’ youngest, Jessica, to rolling hard and rockin’ on in every way possible. JB is one, if not THE, hardest working man in this business. Thanks for being an amazing friend to me. I love and respect you so much, mego el mego ... YEAAAAAAAAAAAA! I asked Tyler Coe (David Allan’s oldest son) to tell me his best story about JB, whom he’s known since he was a baby. “I’ve been sitting here for ten minutes trying to think of a single story I have about JB Walker that I could tell in public and there isn’t a damn one. And I feel like that’s about the best testament to the kind of friendship he and I have. If you don’t know about what he and I did this time or that time, you probably have no business knowing about it at all.”

“ I’VE BEEN SITTING HERE FOR TEN MINUTES TRYING TO THINK OF A SINGLE STORY I HAVE ABOUT JB WALKER THAT I COULD TELL IN PUBLIC AND THERE ISN’T A DAMN ONE.” He started out as the hell-raising, country singer, David Allan Coe’s security guard. A job he appreciated, but never really owned. It wasn’t until late one night, after a gig in Douglasville with Coe, that JB got the bump in the right direction, literally. His eldest daughter, Erica, came wheeling in on her scooter, bumped into him and said, ‘’Daddy, you always tell us that we can be anything we wanna be; why don’t you be what you wanna be?” Erica was seven at the time, and sadly was taken from this world too soon. “She taught me how to roll hard”, he says tearing up. “The next day, I quit, and that’s when this crazy ride started.” From traveling to Somalia, The Panama Jungles, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, to the ‘Footprint of Freedom’ (Diego Garcia) on U.S.O. tours to playing Daytona Bike Week for 25 consecutive years. Never missing a date, and never late. The man’s seen and done almost everything, and what hasn’t been done, ‘We’ll go do it.” By this time, we’re both so engrossed in our beers and tears, we decide it’s time to lighten the mood. JB comes out with, “I knew Ricky

I

can't believe that 2018 is here! Time has flown by and so many great memories have been made. I always like to reflect back over the year thinking of things I would like to change for the New Year or that I wish I had done in the past! One thing that I know I can do better with is keeping in touch with people. Not just by text or email, but actually calling them or going to lunch or something. As busy as we all are, it's really important to step back and realize that nothing beats a good laugh and conversation in person with a great friend! I am going to keep this as one of my personal goals in 2018. It will help me in personal growth, as well as with my real estate business. I have to break out of my shell and talk to everyone! This leads to me to what this article is actually about, and that's the amazing company My Vintage Look out of Nashville, TN. You may be familiar with them from shows such as the Nashville Boogie, where her styles graced the runway in the fashion show. Owner Stacy Davidson also made a trip to The Rockabilly Reckoning, one of our Georgia shows. It was great seeing all of her gorgeous dresses and accessories in person. The Day at the Vineyard Dress in Call Me print is the perfect dress for my New Year's theme! It is a novelty print with antique phones and "call me" all over it! The dress is completely cute! It features a plunge v-neck wrap look. It has double halter straps and one is an adjustable shoulder strap, so you can get extra support. The skirt is a very full circle and falls below the knee. It also has pockets! The material is 100% cotton. I love the style and fit of this one. Ringing in the New Year will be a breeze in the Call Me dress! Stacy started 9 years ago selling authentic vintage and then decided to launch her own line last Spring. That is when MVL was born! You can find many styles and patterns to suit you within her company. They are timeless and flattering pieces, you'll feel confident wearing. Also, they are made in Nashville, which is a bonus! Be on the lookout for Stacy and MVL at festivals and shows this year, and I'm sure you'll fall in love with the line too!

BEST LIQUOR: JAMESON

Let’s get this out of the way. Ireland’s most famous whiskey was founded by a Scotsman. Having spent most of his life as a sheriff clerk, John Jameson arrived in Dublin as a middle-aged man. We’re not sure if we can put his decision down to a midlife crisis, but it was a big move for someone who had a well-established job at home. When he set up shop, Bow Street wasn’t the only distillery in this area. In fact, this part of Dublin was a whiskey making hotspot. The capital was booming at the turn of the 19th century and John Jameson wasn’t the only person trying to stake a claim. Well, the Kustom Kulture still believes in tradition, and support the lifetime of labor behind creating the now iconic green bottle. Jameson Original is a blend of pot still and fine grain whiskeys that is as versatile as it is smooth. Triple-distilled and aged for a minimum of 4 years, this is the timeless whiskey of the Kustom Kulture Lifestyle.

BEST BARTENDER: MELISSA MERRITT

Congratulations to Melissa Merritt at B3 Bar and Grill. A lot of times we ask, what makes a great bartender. Well, if you ask anyone at B3, you will none other than hear Melissa’s name called out (We think she secretly owns B3). The loyal “fan” club of Melissa celebrates another year with her, as she is recognized by an overwhelming amount of support by her patrons. Stop by when you are in the area and enjoy in the great company of B3 Bar and Grill a little libation served with a touch of class and sass!

BEST PAINTER/PAINT SHOP: CHARLIE TYRE OF RNO

It is a pleasant announcement to see a great friend of Grease Inc. get recognized for years in his trade. Ink and Oil would like to present this year’s Best Paint Shop & Painter to artist, Charlie Tyre. Charlie has been painting for over 30 years in the industry. Once a sign painter, Charlie gravitates to his passion within his kulture with traditional pin striping, lettering, full body paint, airbrushing, and more. Charlie has created a very loyal following over the years, and even now teaches up and coming potential painters with special artist series pin striping classes at his shop and sometimes as an guest artist off location. Charlie is no stranger to the lifestyle, once as a motorcycle drag racer, this is not only Charlie’s life, it’s his passion.

BEST PIN STRIPE ARTIST: CORY COX

It is always great to see new talent come into the scene and get recognized for efforts and talent. When it seemed as though Pin Striping was beginning to fade off a little and no one around to pick up the brush to carry on a deep rooted tradition, from the Alabama-Georgia state line came a young man by the name of Cory Cox. This humble hard working guy has made a dramatic impact coming out this past year and capturing a lot of attention. You can see a lot of old skool strokes in Cory’s work, but also you see a part of himself and the new breed of Pin Striping emerge. Cory Cox took the Master Trophy Trophy as Hell on Wheels this past year with his Best Motorcycle Paint Trophy and spent the entire day striping gassers, rods, and a little of this and that at the same time. It is great to support local artist and see this is not a dying part of our kulture with artists like Cory Cox keeping it very much alive.

BEST CRAFTSMAN: JUSTIN ROBERTS

This recognized category offers an expansive approach to our kulture. As a crafts·man: ‘kraf(t)s-m n; noun: craftsman; plural noun: craftsmen; a person who is skilled in a particular craft.synonyms:artisan, artist, skilled worker; expert, master; archaicartificer “the handiwork of East Coast craftsmen” Justin Roberts, a former US Marine, Iraq war veteran, creates a unique blend of oils that will tame that razor wire you call a beard. Justin has worked years on creating a blend of oils that will moisturize and make even the driest, gnarliest beard become healthy, soft and manageable. Whisker Whiskey beard oils are made from 100% natural ingredients and will help your beard grow stronger, thicker, and faster, while reducing “beardruff” and itchyness. Whisker Whisley has a selection of several manly scents that make you feel like your holding a chainsaw in one hand, and a bottle of ‘shine in the other. All products are handmade right here in the USA.

BEST UPHOLSTERY: LYONS UPHOLSTERY

Ink & Oil would like to recognize Cheryl Lyons of Lyons Upholstery. Lyons Upholstery specializes in motorcycles, auto, and furniture work. Based in Decatur, Cheryl is known for her artistic talent and extremely easy to work with. “I love to sew and work with my hands, I am a welder by trade. I would rather figure out how to make something myself, than to buy it, it is much more rewarding.” Starting off making wallets in 2004, Cheryl has now expanded her trade into creative outlets showing off her craft with project builds throughout the southeast. Give her a like this winter at www.facebook.com/ lyonsupholstery, and get working on making that dream ride look great both inside and out!

BEST NATIONAL EVENT: ROCKABILLY RECKONING

Several years back, a small group of people received a call from B3 Bar & Grill’s owner, Carlos Bickers, when another local event went belly up. Carlos offered B3 as an alternative location to host this cancelled show. Immediately several people in the community worked feverishly to pull it all together at the last minute and it was a huge success! Since then, Carlos has created his own version of a show with that same summer Rockabilly flair. The Rockabilly Reckoning has now become a southeast destination in July with attendees traveling from Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, and the Carolinas. In years past we have enjoyed many historic icons including Billy Harden, and several current day Rockabilly and Psychobilly Bands including the Krank Daddies, Little Lesley and the Bloodshots, the Koffin Kats, and more.... We look forward to another summer oasis at B3 Bar & Grill as Austell, Georgia feels the beat of the Reckoning. The Ink & Oil issue proudly presents in the People and Places portion of Grease Inc., a full spread of this past year’s event.

BEST MUSIC VENUE: DIXIE TAVERN

The Dixie Tavern is no stranger to live music. Known as the “Home of the Zac Brown Band”, the Dixie Tavern opens it’s doors quite often to the Kustom Kulture with shows including Smooth and the Bully Boys, side show antics of Captain and Madam Maybelle, Beitthemeans, and of course the Psycho DeVilles. The Dixie Tavern is packed full of live music nightly and accompanies a great po’ boy & burger-centric Southern menu at this roadhouse-style bar. “This is truly a great place to see local bands, drink cold beer, and mingle in an OTP setting”.

BEST SINGER SONGWRITER: WAITS & CO.

Waits & Co. was formed in 2011 out of a coffeehouse performance in Savannah, Georgia by singer-songwriter Jon Waits that good friend Markus Kuhlmann sat in on. From Jon’s prolific songwriting and Markus’ multi-instrumental abilities it was obvious that we had something unique on our hands. Performing for a year as a duo we decided that we wanted to fill out our sound by adding another acoustic instrument. The upright bass was a perfect fit. Fast forward several years, experiments with other instrumental performers, and a lineup change, John Pizzichemi came into the picture. Though an electric bassist by trade he quickly picked up the skills, and dedicated the required practice time to filling the role of our trusted ‘keeper of rhythm’ and official third member of Waits & Co. We have been fortunate to enlist a variety of other great musicians to make our sound larger for private events, festivals, and high-profile gigs. As a trio we’ve become a staple of the Savannah music circuit, performing weekly around the area, and have been featured in multiple articles from the press, including a full page interview with Jon Waits for his award in Connect Savannah’s Best Of 2015 issue for Savannah’s ‘Best Singer-Songwriter’. We have stayed true to our roots and only carry a few ‘cover’ tunes in our arsenal, but still fill the standard of three to four hour gigs with our original material.

BEST ROCKABILLY BAND: KITTY ROSE AND THE RATTLERS

Southern Styled Original Rockabilly and Jump Blues straight outta Atlanta, Georgia, Kitty Rose and The Rattlers mew mew mew with a bite! Purrrifik! Performing as Kitty Rose, singer Katharine Cole spent years as an aspiring if unconventional country artist, releasing several CDs of old-style country & western cowgirl tunes. Now the onetime Texan and Californian is living in Atlanta and has made the switch to rockabilly with her new group, Kitty Rose & the Rattlers. She also has a 7” vinyl single and full-length album out of songs in this style, under her newly adopted moniker Rockabilly Kitty Rose. The tracks on the single, “Bourbon Bound” and “I Saw a Ghost,” can also be found on the album Gotta Wind Down!, available as a download from various online digital retailers.

BEST AMERICANA/ROOTS BAND: ANDREA COLBURN AND MUD MOSELEY

Andrea Colburn and Mud Moseley sound like a panther screaming in the middle of the night, like a band of gypsies at a tea party, like a carefully curated hullabaloo held in a Wild West funeral home. Like Doc Watson and the Cramps had a heinous love child. Just as much influenced by Willie Nelson, Tom Waits, and Hank Williams Sr. as new Country acts such as Colter Wall and the Deslondes, Colburn & Moseley keep somewhat of a traditional country and blues feel all while giving it their own haunting, part Piedmont, part psychobilly spin. The duo plan on bringing their own brand of bad to a town near you this year. Part Flat Duo Jets, part Bonnie and Clyde, this is not a performance that you will want to miss. Just maybe don’t stand in the front row.

BEST ROCK BAND: NO SWEAT

“No Sweat brings a genuine energy that only playing cover tunes can produce. Not faced with the burdens of selling records and the music industry machine, this band focuses on making people laugh, sing, and dance. They’re energetic and always make sure their fans have a good time. This band likes to incorporate the same feeling that their name expresses… have fun and take no prisoners. No Sweat…. No song is safe; no town will ever be the same. No Sweat….” If you have not seen them, what rock have you been under?!? Phillip May we all know from “Mechanics “ playing Charley Magruders in the 80’s 90’s, and his other bands since. He has not stopped rockin since the cradle of rock he was born to be in! We this might be the wikipedia on a Rutabaga, but we ain’t talking veggies here in Grease Inc.! or the past three years we have deeply enjoyed working with a great little dive bar, Porterdale Bar & Grill in Porterdale, GA. The owners, Scott and Debi, took over this joint just prior to us reaching out and working together. Since then, we have enjoyed taking part in creating some amazing good times with some great people. Walking into PBG is like stepping into a Cheers sitcom. Its true when they say, “everyone knows your name, because after one visit, the staff at Porterdale Bar & Grill, does know you, and you become family instantly. Well, for the third year in a row, we have enjoyed bringing original music to PBG with Scott and Debi heavily supporting live music. We have hosted Battle of the Bands, always taking place just before the Thanksgiving holiday, with the finals the first week of December. We have encountered some incredible music over the years with our brands hiring some acts for festivals. PBG has hired many of the bands in the battle to come back and play various shows with them, including names like Red Dirt Mountain. Well, this year is no different, except the fact that we took the show from local to regional with out of state bands entering. This year's show included acts from Hollow Sky, returning from year two: Tuesday in December, The Gods of Mars out of South Carolina, the ATLUS, the Dround Hounds, acoustic performance by Jared Breshers , Tyler Wallace, and Amy Rae, country rock performer. Now, we did encounter some upsets for the first time with a band having to pull out the last moment for an emergency; but the show must go on, and it did! It is always great to see bands perform their own music. You get to see the passion behind it. You can see the attitude. You feel the emotion. Well, each band was very diverse, giving each one a chance to set the stage for the opportunity to walk away with $1000 in cash and a feature in Grease Inc. We had the support of local bassist,

GREASE INC. MAGAZINE

Monroe Slim, formerly of Red Dirt Mountain, and fill in bassist for bands including the Psycho DeVilles and Phil Rocker out of Columbia, S.A. Each band was scored on originality, performance, crowd influence and participation, and skill. We enjoyed genres including rock, indie rock, country, acoustic, and good old party rock 'n' roll. By the end of the 'bout, the band that took it all was Gods of Mars out of Greenville, SC. Gods of Mars was an original combination of Black Sabbath meets Spinal Tap. From the insane deep dark bass, to the animated skillful precision of guitar, and the delightful addition of the skin thumping female drummer, Gods of Mars had Porterdale screaming and toasting that last battle. Gods of Mars is a unique collective of musicians who have been playing together on and off for decades. This group knows how to have fun and get the crowd going. The music was spot on when it came to style, skills, and originality. It was a throw back to the old starting days of heavy metal, but with a completely new edge. The lyrics, which you could hear crystal clear, are of having fun. There is a lot of humor that went behind the writing with the basic thought, everyone is here for a good time, period. Gods of Mars has opened for bands familiar to Grease Inc., including Beitthemeans out of Alabama. They are no stranger to the music scene or to a stage. We look forward to our exclusive feature in Grease Inc. and to have these guys back out for a complete show in 2018. Thank you again to Porterdale Bar and Grill for their support of original music. It is working with great people like Debi and Scott, that keep music alive today. Cheers to both of you and your staff, and we wish you a very Happy New Year!
