uly marks the celebration of our great nation’s independence. During the past month, some of the crew took pleasure in a cross country road trip experiencing the most amazing stories, but also saw, first hand, America vanishing. I have been to almost every state in our country, while I listen to people preach politics who have never even stepped foot out of their own states, unless for the occasional run to the beach. On this trip, everything was different. We randomly stopped on the side of the highway to take in a moment. We took the 5 extra minutes to drive into town, compared to the pit stop along the side of the freeway. When we did this, the people we met were amazing. The character of perceived ghost towns had their own stories to tell and share. The people were so genuine and excited to spend a little time with us and share their stories. We were amazed at just how much history is there to share. Stories of how our country has truly survived over the decades. There was nothing that had to deal with politics. It was America fighting to survive, pursue happiness, and make genuine communities where families and business would thrive. In July, we have always, at Grease Inc., celebrated America. We believe we should celebrate all that has been given up to fight for a better life. We believe all people are created equal and it is by our actions that dictates the direction in life we choose to take. Through these experiences, we hope to share all that we represent as a Kustom Kulture. We wish you and your families a wonderful and safe 4th of July. We hope you take the time and sit at a table and share stories of your family’s heritage. We hope that you can share how fighting for independence goes further than a flag, but runs in our blood as true Americans. God Bless America!

The Great Depression began a few months after the introduction of their 45 cubic inch model. HarleyDavidson’s sales fell from 21,000 in 1929 to 3,703 in 1933. Despite this, Harley-Davidson unveiled a new lineup for 1934, which included a flathead engine and Art Deco styling.

Pets: My english bull terrier Adalie. She’s also my service, hunting and fishing dog. AKA my sidekick and an overall badass bitch. Favorite food: Oh man, I love food! There are so many things I love. I could probably live off of Mexican and Asian cuisine. Although, I would never turn down good seafood, prime rib or a thanksgiving meal. The only thing I’m not really into is chocolate and sweets in general. Favorite place to eat out: To be quite honest, I would rather stay in and cook/ bake. My dad raised/trained me to be a force in the cooking and baking world. What type of music do you like?: My main interests are classic rock and country. I really listen to everything though,

punk, rock, metal, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and even 70’s. I’m just not big into rap and I loathe classical. 75% of the 80’s also suck. If you ask the man friend however he will say ‘75% of 80’s music rocks!’ And that my main interests are ‘cool stuff and crap.’ Favorite band: Ah! Far too many. Tom Petty, Aerosmith, a ton of country artists. There is simply no way to choose one. Favorite song: I have multiple and they always change based on my mood. Favorite movies: Anything Tarantino! Drink of choice: While I don’t have a ‘drink of choice.’ I do have a drink of loathing. Moving to the South has only made me realize that there is an even deeper level of hatred possible. The drink is tea and it creeps me the fuck out. Turn on: Sense of humor and easy conversation. Turn off: Ignorance, bad tippers & arrogance. Do I change my own oil: I do! At least when my schedule allows me to. I was raised in the garage with my dad.

Instructions

Cupcakes:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line cupcake pans with 24 liners. 2. Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl. Set aside for now. 3. Combine the butter and sugar in the bowl of a large stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Mix on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes. 4. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then add the vanilla extract. With the mixer running on low,

add third of the flour mixture, then when the flour streaks have disappeared, add half of the yogurt. Add half of the remaining flour, the rest of the yogurt, then finish with the last of the flour. Stop the mixer and scrape down the bottom and sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula to fully mix the batter. 5. Fill the cupcake tins until they’re half to two-thirds full, then bake at 350 for 20-22

30

minutes, until they just start to turn golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool the cupcakes completely before filling and frosting.

Buttercream:

1. Combine the egg whites and the granulated sugar in the bowl of a large stand mixer, and whisk them together. Choose a small saucepan that lets you fit the base of the stand mixer snugly into the top of the saucepan—this is your makeshift hot water bath. (Alternately, you can use a different bowl or an actual bain marie and then transfer the mixture to a mixing bowl once it’s heated.) Add an inch of water to the bottom of the saucepan, and bring the water to a simmer. 2. Place the mixing bowl on top of the saucepan, making sure that the bottom isn’t in contact with the water, and heat the egg white mixture. Whisk frequently so that the egg whites don’t cook. Continue to heat the whites until they are hot to the touch, and when you rub a bit between your fingers, you don’t feel any grittiness from the sugar. Once the whites are hot, transfer the mixing bowl to your mixer and fit it with a whisk attachment. 3. Beat the whites on medium-high speed until they are no longer warm to the touch – feel the outside of the bowl, and make sure that it is around room temperature. Depending on your mixer and the temperature of your environment, this may take 15-20 minutes, or more. Reduce the speed to medium-low and add the softened but cool butter in small chunks, a tablespoon at

GREASE INC. MAGAZINE | greaseinc.com | JULY 2015

a time, making sure to wait in between additions. It may separate or look a little gloopy at this point – fear not. Once all of the butter is added, increase the speed again and whip until it comes together and is light and fluffy. If, after 5 minutes, it hasn’t come together, refrigerate the mixing bowl for 5-7 minutes, to cool the mixture down, and whip it again. Add the vanilla extract and salt. 4. The buttercream can be made in advance and kept at room temperature if you’re going to use it the same day, or refrigerated. If it has been chilled, let it sit at room temperature until completely soft, then re-whip it to get the smooth texture back before you use it.

Assembly:

1. Combine the Pop Rocks and ¼ cup melted coconut oil in a bowl, and stir until the candy is evenly coated with a thin layer of oil. If it seems like the candy is a little dry, add a bit more oil, a little at a time, until well-covered. Scrape the Pop Rocks onto a baking sheet covered with waxed paper, and spread it out into a single layer. Refrigerate to solidify the oil, about 10 minutes. 2. Use a sharp paring knife to cut a cone-shaped hole out of the top of the

32

cupcakes. Scoop the Pop Rocks off of the baking sheet, separating any large clumps with your fingers. Scoop a spoonful of Pop Rocks into the center of each cupcake, coming almost all the way to the top. Cut the bottom off of the cupcake cone, and replace the top of the cupcake on top of the candy. 3. If you want to make multi-colored swirls like the ones picture, scoop a cup of frosting into two different bowls. Add a teaspoon of red gel coloring to one bowl, and a teaspoon of blue gel coloring to the other bowl, and mix well. 4. Fit a piping bag with a large star tip. Scoop the red and blue frosting into two separate plastic bags, and snip off a corner of each bag. Holding the piping bag in one hand, pipe two red stripes of frosting up the inside of the bag, then pipe two blue stripes up the inside of the bag. Fill the bag with white frosting – when you squeeze it, the colors will blend together and you’ll get nice multi-colored stripes! Pipe a generous swirl of frosting on top of each cupcake. 5. Exploding Cupcakes are best enjoyed soon after they are assembled, but I have found that the Pop Rocks stay “poppy” for about 8 hours after assembly.

t the beginning of the season, some of the crew had the pleasure to head out west for an awesome show on Route 66 in New Mexico. We shared ample amounts of social media postings trying to capture and share some of our experiences. The biggest focus on this adventure was taking time to enjoy our surroundings. For most of our road trips we hit the road hard and get to our destination. We do our jobs, then head straight home. On this trip, rather than getting gas at the station immediately off the highway, we took literally only 5 more minutes and ventured into town; this is just one of our finds.

The Roost is located at 117 Rail Road Avenue in Shamrock, Texas. At first glance this town appears to be a ghost town. Most of the shops are closed and not in use. The street gets a random car, most of the time a truck, rolling through ever so slowly down main street. We needed gas and at this leg of the trip were hungry. We rolled through town looking up and down all the alley ways and there she was. We found a simple barn-like building drawing attention to itself with displays of fresh food and local dining, so we took a turn and parked to head in.

38

We actually entered through the kitchen area. The entire kitchen was open and exposed. The staff immediately knew we weren't locals. Who told them? They greeted us with a smile and some of the best hospitality we have seen ever! The waitress is a gal who settled down in Shamrock to raise a family. She actually just returned to work that day from being on family leave to have her first child. Everyone in town of course knew that but us, and had to come in to visit and say hello. The menu was simple. Burgers from local beef, fish tacos (that placed this

little joint on the map), sandwiches, and salads were the making of the menu. The produce was fresh from the local farms. All the side items were prepared in house! They even had sweet tea!!! If you don't travel out of the south, then you wouldn't get that! They treated us like we were locals. They always have fresh desserts baked in house by one of the kitchen staff. They had some fresh peach cobbler and home-made ice cream; we instantly caved and had to order! No mistake there!!!

40

After lunch, we took some more time in town. We learned a history that we will save to share in person around a summer campfire and for upcoming articles about the America that has been forgotten. We will leave you with this, on our way out we stopped in a gas station and learned that Shamrock is the town that the Disney movie "Cars" was modeled after. They had the movie showing inside and took the time to point out all the places we saw in town. It was powerful!!! Take the time this summer to ride or cruise somewhere new. Experience life! Experience hospitality as it should be. Then share that experience with others!
