hat’s the first thing that comes to mind when July hits? I truly hope you think the celebration of living in a free nation. We do our very best to stay neutral when it comes to politics, as everyone has their opinions. We also believe it’s these opinions, and the freedom to express them, that as a kulture we grow. We grow as a community. We grow as individuals. We grow as people. Without expression, where would we be? Imagine if all our motorcycles, hot rods, classic cars, or any other type of ride were nothing but flat black. For a very short minute it might be neat, but long term, it would become very dull. Everyone would become less expressive and creativity would not be accepted. I want everyone to really think about what it means to each of you to be an American.

This month has tremendous symbolism. It is the month we widely proclaim our right to freedom. We live in a free society and we need to protect those freedoms at all costs. Our hearts go out to all the victims of the recent attacks that have occurred on American soil and appear to becoming more and more daring. As a collection of Americans, we need to continue to stand steadfast by each other’s sides and not allow pure hatred to penetrate our great nation. During July, stand tall and proud that you are an American. Celebrate with your families, and share good times with friends and neighbors. If you are an immigrant to America, remember why you came here to begin with and remember all the sacrifices it has taken to be apart of a collection of kultures who can freely interact in an open society. Hang your American flags high this month to show that we all believe in liberty. As we proclaimed in January, 2016 is the “Year to Pursue Happiness” for Grease Inc. and Garage71. May God Bless You and Your Dreams. May God Bless America!!!!

T

he history of the “Bobber” dates all the way back to the 1920’s. Originally called the Bob-Job, the bobber was a stripped down version of the Harley-Davidson J-series. Typically, the front fender was removed. All the accessories were stripped off the motorcycle. Even in the 20’s & 30’s the wheel base was shortened. In the 1930’s, a race class within the AMA was created specifically for this new style of motorycle. At that time, the Indian Scout seemed to dominate over the Harley-Davidson in this class. During WWII, the bobber became the style of motorcycle desired with the Hot Rodders of the day. The styles began to replicate many of the features of the current time including chroming of particular parts and metal flake paint jobs. It was in the 40’s that you saw emerging artists like, Von Dutch, come out with crazy new styling including his signature pinstriping. Today, the bobber has created a new hipster movement with affordable barn finds and salvage yard creations of Harley-Davidsons and Honda. From this bobber style, the spawn of the cafe racer was born. From this current build from Kotic Kustoms, you can clearly see old vs. new.

s I'm sitting here, trying to find the words to give this incredible (pile of old stones, creaking floors, and hauntingly dark interior) venue a proper farewell, I am flooded with memories of shows I've seen there, and can't help but get lost. Do you remember your first show at the Masq? I can't recall mine, even though I remember my first experience back in 2008. Some of my old radio station buddies took me there, and I never stopped going. I can recall the first time I saw GWAR there! I was told to wear clothes I didn't care about, and that was it. I went by myself, and stood on the steps when you first walk in the door 26

of Heaven, eyes wide and mouth dropped. I was trying to ease my way in to the room by just standing there amazed by everyone who knew what they were in for, trying to find a path to the bar, but then got told to move off the steps (I'm sure you've had that same experience in that same spot on the stairs). So, instead I was pushed in to the mass of fans, got juice from down under squirted in my eye from the stage, saw the decapitation of Justin Bieber, had warm, neon goo splattered all over my white t-shirt (which I still have), got elbowed in the head; it was grossest, most disturbing and coolest show of my life. And it couldn't have happened in a better place. greaseinc.com | JULY 2016

My first Atlanta band (Altovox) played there, I've booked shows there, bartended, gotten wasted, danced my ass off, and been scared there. I'm not sure there's another place I can say that about!! Oh wait...ok, there are only two venues I can say that about, in the whole world...The Masquerade and The Clermont Lounge. Which is very fitting considering if we weren't at one place, we were at the other. So many good memories being passed around in my head and in what I've read through social media. Everybody seems to be on the same page about how sad it is that we're losing such a huge staple for the Atlanta music scene, but are we really?? There are rumors flying around about relocation of the venue. Would it have the same vibe? Probably not. Would it still have some of the best staff? Hope so. Would it be haunted? Hope not. Would it continue to bring in solid local, national and international acts? Absolutely.

I have no doubt in my mind that the Masquerade will rise again. We can at least feel good about the integrity of the historic building being kept. It's been standing (some say) since the late 1890's, has been a mill, a pizza/blues bar, a popular music venue, and it will be something else one day soon. Maybe

shops, or another restaurant, but the structure that housed us so many times and has seen more life come through it's doors, has had so many talented musicians, the smell of pizza, ghost-hunting teams within it's walls...the life we've breathed into it will last forever (or until city developers find yet another use for the land). Let's just hope that with the ever changing and growing Atlanta market, we will still be able to recognize places we've named our second and third homes. We'll see you on the other side...

ince 1939, Myrtle Beach Bike Week has attracted large crowds to the South Carolina coastal city. 2016 saw literally thousands of attendees flood the streets for a weeklong celebration of bikes, babes, and bands, and there was no place better to be than The Beaver Bar in Murrells Inlet to witness all of the action!

BIKE WEEK 2016

The Beaver Bar has two locations in Murrells Inlet approximately a mile apart. Beautiful women wearing sexy outfits, many of them working long double shifts every day for the entire week, staff both locations! Every square foot of space within that mile was prime real estate as food trucks, T-shirt tents, jewelry craftsmen, and other vendors pack into parking lots and sidewalks while visitors vied for a spot to park their bikes. It looked like every nearby business that wasn’t selling beer had decided to close up shop so that they could rent out their parking lots at $3 per bike and every one of those lots were full! The quantity and variety of bikes was incredible and I was happy to see such a large number of amazing customs every day. Since most of the bikes I saw were either driving past me on the street or unattended in the

parking lots, I wasn’t able to talk with many of the owners of the bikes, but I was able to catch a few guys as they were arriving. The response was unanimously positive about this year’s event with the only complaint being the intermittent rain. Both Beaver Bar locations had huge stages set up with bands performing all day and night. Country artist Tim Elliott performed his current hit single “Boom” as the crowd sang along. Florida-based band Crashrocket entertained everyone with classic hard rock songs. Although a few of the shows were rained out, for the most part there were bands performing all week from early afternoon to late into the night. However, the band that really stole the show was Radio Cult from Atlanta!

Radio Cult had the crowd on their feet as they cranked out some of the best hits from the 70s and 80s, as well as their own rocking original songs. I’ve seen few bands that seem to enjoy being up on the stage as much as Radio Cult. Singer / lead guitarist Bambi Lynn has an energy that is unmatched and a smile that just won’t quit! I was able to catch two of their performances and each one was very different from the other in terms of song selection and between-song conversations, which lets me know that their shows really are as spontaneous as they seem. I would definitely count Radio Cult’s performances as one of the highlights of Myrtle Beach Bike Week 2016 for me! After a week on my feet and too many burgers, tacos, and hot dogs, the long ride home was rough, but the trip was well worthwhile and I look forward to doing it again in 2017!
