ooking back as far as the Great Depression, unemployment was high and new cars were too expensive for most families. With time on their hands and little funds, young people started to rebuild old cars rescued from junk yards and barns, often swapping out engines, transmissions, and other components. This quickly lead to creative customizing, with a goal of competing for speed; enhancing their cars with more powerful engines and modi-

fications. The lighter, the faster (hotter), which was gained by stripping unneeded parts like running boards, fenders, and tops; anything that could improve their performance. Rear ends are raised, vents cut into hoods to free trapped air, and mufflers were reduced. Amateur racing became very popular! This is how “Hot Rodding” was born, but the term “Hot Rod” came later. In the early 1930’s the cars were called Soup-Ups, Gow Jobs or Cut Downs. Hot rodding stalled pretty much during WW II.
14
Everyone was working on the war effort, gas was rationed, and no one was even making street cars. Everyone just made do until the end of the war. Then in 1945, when soldiers came home, hot rodding returned. While all cars were candidates for Hot Rods, one favorite style of rod during this period was the roadster. It was lighter than a coupe or sedan, and could be easier to build for speed. Ford made millions of Model T's and Model A’s from the previous decades, so they were very cheap and easy to find. While Model Ts were “hot-rodded” from the 1920s on, the “T-bucket” was specifically created and named by rod builder and actor, Norm Grabowski, in

the early 1950s. He created the “Kookie Kar”, which appeared on TV in 77 Sunset Strip! It was a huge hit and inspired many copies and tributes. A genuine “T-bucket” has the two-seater body of a Model T roadster or pickup; named after the "bucket"-shaped body shell. T-buckets remain very popular, usually with an enormous engine for the size of the car! The front wheels are often much smaller and narrower than the rear. Ford’s Model T’s and Model A’s were the major contributors to the early Hot Rodders, largely because they were so numerous compared to other vehicles. When they were junked, they were cheap

and easy to find, and parts were plentiful. To this day, Model A replacement parts are relatively easy to find. Ford built almost 15 million Model T’s between 1908 and 1927! By 1921, Ford had just over 61% of the market (Forbes), and, in 1924, over 50% of the cars in the world were Model T’s. Folks could buy racy, custom

bodies and go fast parts from companies such as Louis Chevrolet's Forntenac for the Model T. Known as the “Tin Lizzy”, it was named the “Most Influencial Car of the 20th Century” ahead of BMC, Citroën, and Volkswagen. Referred to as the “A” or “A-Bone” by customizers, just shy of 5 million Ford Model A’s were built between 1927 and1931! Edsel Ford, Henry Ford’s son, was the principal force behind the Model A’s development. He also started the Mercury Division where he was able to produce more ‘racy’ vehicles such as the ‘Zephyr” and the “Continental” with faster, more powerful engines. Author’s personal note: My first car in high school was a 1930 Ford Model A Tudor Sedan. While not a hot rod specifically, it did have a two tone paint job and pin striping. Factoid: The first American race was 1895 Chicago Times-Herald race won by Frank Duryea.

y Father purchased the car in 1955 when he was 18 years old (he is now 77) in a small town (Marne MI) west of grand Rapids Michigan. He bought the car from original owner that used the car around town and pulled trailers of coal needed for heat In winter. The car had aproximately 30,000 miles on it when Dad bought it for $125.00. My father added a rumble seat and used the car on weekends for a fun car. Some time around 1960 he started working on the car, hoping to restore it.
In 1961, his first Child was born so the project went to the back burner do to time and money constraints. I was the second Son born in 1962. The Model A sat half unassembled in the second stall of my parents garage (the house they still live in) the whole time I was growing up. Dad had several people want and offered to purchase the car many times over the years but he never would sell it. It was evident over the years that he had lost the burning desire to finish the car, but wouldn't part with it.

As a youngster I sat in car many time's "garage driving" the coupe. Occasionally when we had the task of thoroughly cleaning the garage we would air up the tires and push it out into the driveway. Those times really got the imagination going of just how cool it would be if the car actually ran and could be drove. Many years had gone by with the Car sitting in the garage. The Kids all married off living other places with kids of there own. Of the 3 children of my parents, I was the one that was living a life of cars and car parts. I owned an auto parts remanufacturing company and had a back ground of auto body repair from a two year tech program. Although the car was not forgotten about, life had pretty much gone on with all of us until the day I got "the call". It was a Sunday in the spring of

2008 when dad called and asked when I was going to come out and "pick up my car"! catching me off guard I said I don't know what your talking about. He said the model A, I am giving it to you to do what ever you want with it. I was so excited! I rounded up a trailer and straps and was headed to my parents home. I brought it home and put it in my workshop. As most new projects go, there was allot of enthusiasm around getting it taken apart and trying to decide how the car should be done. After going to several car shows )taking Dad to some) I kind of had a game plan as to how I wanted to do the car. It was decided that It would be "old School" as how dad may have wanted it as a teen ager living in the 50s. Knowing that my own schedule was pretty tight and wanting to get the car done why dad was alive and

could enjoy it with me, I enlisted a car builder friend of mind to do the heavy lifting. Hiring out the fab & body work, getting the flat head motor built, and buying some 32 parts. Brookeville took quite a few years off the time line. The car has been done now for 3 years, Dad and I have been able to go a few times a year to different shows, and just drive it around, as I live in Georgia and he lives in Michigan. Its a special connection that will be here forever. Like my dad, I won't ever be able to sell the car. When the time is right I hope to make "that call" to an unsuspecting Son, Daughter or Grandson or Granddaughter to carry on that special connection.
