his bike started out as a basic rolling chassis I picked up through Larry at Garage Company Customs in Birmingham, AL. The project had been started, but not by much. When I first got it I used Photoshop to actually try to put the picture in my head down on paper to get an idea what I needed to make and buy. I actually ended up pretty close to that image, hence the name. The bike came with a Flyrite Scorcher Sportster frame and an ’89 Sporty motor. I added laced wheels and 8’ over forks right off the bat. Recently I swapped the motor for a 1994 Sportster 1200. Over the 4 years it took me to build this bike I made some parts, then discarded them, then had some help making other parts, then discarded them as well. Finally I got it where I wanted it. It took 2-3 years of every Saturday at Garco (Thanks Larry (R.I.P.) and Spenser) then a few months at home and finally getting it to the warehouse where I work at my day job to finally finish it. The bike has a cool set of short pullback bars that Larry helped me narrow a couple of inches and Spenser helped me weld the sissy bar in the beginning, then Mike Callahan helped me finish the TIG welding to finish it. Larry also made the oil tank mounts for the frame and Jeremy from Hate City Customs in Atlanta supplied the oil tank from a 60’s Triumph chopper to make it work. The gas tank is a stock Sportster tank from my brother Roadside Marty, the seat is a swap meet find from Endless Phil. My brother Ross at Southpaw Machine/Americana Speed Shop machined the fork lowers for me and helped with all the little machine parts it takes to make a bike come together. Finally Phil and Mailman from Fu-King Paint laid down the color and made the machine beautiful. It’s amazing what you get when you tell an artist the basic colors you like and to “just make it cool”. If you look close you can see the little jumping Evel Knievels and even one crashed one. That’s about it, I need to thank my brothers in the Inbreds RC for all their help and support, the guys at Garco for all the support over the years and of course my wife Allison for putting up with my crazy biker stuff.

was sitting on an amp in this young band's rehearsal space, which is really a storage building off Peachtree Industrial, cutting up and laughing about how as soon as we started talking, a band that shares a wall with SD started rehearsing, which made it pretty difficult to hear each other. But, that's when our skills of mouthing words and rudimentary sign language came in handy. It could be compared to how most bands communicate with each other on stage. So it wasn't uncomfortable for us. I think it's kind of ironic that we can hardly talk, because these kids are pretty quiet anyways...that is until you get them opened up. Except for the drummer, Nicholas Gossic, formerly of Hellacool. He just sat there behind his kit, looking mysterious and unassuming, only speaking when I asked him something directly. It amazes me when you see someone that reserved in everyday life just come alive while playing a gig.

15

Sound Detour Carmen Meadows, the lead singer, and Bryan Caruso, the lead guitar player, both joked about wishing we had brought a bottle of liquor, which lead to them telling me a story from a writing session with Chartreuse, and how the only thing that got finished was that bottle. I look over at Tim Eiss, bass guitar, and he's shaking his head and chuckling, think he's heard that one before! I was introduced to Sound Detour, through a buddy of ours, Amos Rifkin of A. Rippin Production, who I'll feature

to Pat Benatar, in that they both were classically trained and went on to front rock bands. Carmen toured in the Atlanta Young Singers of Callanwolde choir lead by Professor Mathis, and once she graduated in 2011, joined the band after she met Bryan through SD's original bass player, JT. Bryan, a transplant of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, has been a member of the band since it's conception in 2008. He mentions that Maniac, the horror hard core punk band he formed while in his home town, might still be together if it wasn't for that devastating dose of Mother Nature. But, out of tragedy came something great. SD sat on its heels, writing music, until Nick, from FL, found his way into the band in 2014, and Tim, of Rochester NY, not long after in 2015. Another case of Craigslist musicians falling into gigs! And now, they're a tight group, all on the same page about their end goal...making it. Their next step is playing one of the biggest music festivals in the United States, South by Southwest, in Austin, Texas. For a band, any band, this is a huge deal! The somewhat 'small town' gets pumped full of ravenous musicians hungry for the next step in their careers. The streets, allies, front porches, bars, street corners, and any patch of grass gets taken over by

Their sound is eclectic with a melodic punk and some funk rock feels. in next month's issue. They made it in our battle of the bands at Porterdale Bar and Grill at the end of last year, and with some heavy competition, won! It always makes me happy to see female fronted bands, and Carmen is at the top of my list of chicks to watch in Atlanta. Their sound is eclectic with a melodic punk and some funk rock feels. I compared the singer

Sound Detour every genre of music in existence for a week straight. SD will be playing Club Rio's rooftop on March 18th and 19th, right by the swimming pool...how cool of a backdrop is that?! I've been told several times that Austin is one of the coolest cities in America, and if I ever visit, be prepared to not want to come back. For musicians and music lovers, it might our Mecca. Now that we have fair warning...who's in?? We're excited for all of our Atlanta bands heading to SXSW, especially these four. They have the drive and unfiltered desire to take this band as far as it can go, and with everything

18

they've accomplished up until now and not being jaded by the business, it's all within reach. There's no need for a back up plan, as long as you keep on moving, babes. We can't wait to hear stories from your journey out west. Maybe we can reminisce over a bottle of what Carmen says, that "smells like Christmas and tastes like licorice" devil Chartreuse, when you're back. ;) Where to find them: Sound Cloud, Reverb Nation, and the all mighty Facebook. Cool fact: their favorite gig so far has been through an independent production called, Punk Black. Google it!!

Exclusive Interview with

Jason Galaz

of Muddy Roots T

By Brian Whitcomb

he crew of Garage71 Radio and Grease Inc. have enjoyed the years of a great Americana Roots Music Festival hidden in the hills of Tennessee. Over 5 years ago, I remember standing in a field with mainly artists, vendors and musicians listening to some of the best collected group of musicians I have ever heard. Muddy Roots enjoyed it's beginning in Cookeville, TN. Since, we have enjoyed watching and participating in the growth of Muddy Roots Music Festival, to Muddy Roots Europe, Muddy Roots Weekenders and now the Nashville Boogie, starting Spring 2015. We took the time to sit down with the creator and inspiration behind these great events, Mr. Jason Galaz. • What brought you from the west coast to the east coast? I came to visit my Grandparents here 10 years ago with my ex-wife. We fell in love with the place and moved here within a few months of the visit. • Who is Jason Galaz? What drives you? Definitely obsession, dedication, and conviction to make the world I exist in conform to the world I want to live in. Primarily with music I love. I really just don't know how to accept our current culture and refuse to submit.

33

Jason Galaz of Muddy Roots • Do you play music yourself? I never learned how to play or read music. I play records but can't match a beat. I only know how a song makes me feel. I book bands based on that. • What was your original inspiration when beginning Muddy Roots Music Festival? It was as simple as I wanted all my favorite bands together at once. Those bands and bands that sounded like them. Naturally, I could only pull together those within my reach but it exploded into a scene of it's own. Even though I don't truly believe in linear concept of "Scenes." • You have been successful now with Muddy Roots in Cookeville, TN and Belgium, what inspired the Nashville Boogie? There are a few inspirations for this. First off, I needed a break from the weather risk of outdoor

34

events. That can wear a man down! I also felt that I wasn't able to reach an entire group of people that would enjoy Muddy Roots Music but weren't interested in camping events. I like to go to Viva Las Vegas annually and found inspiration in Tom's event. On my trip there in 2014 I envisioned and planned out the entire Nashville Boogie on the plane trip home. I scribbled notes down and made them become a reality when I got home. My vision was to host an indoor event that celebrated mid century sound and culture and to make it weatherproof. In true Muddy Roots form we focus on booking bands that blur the lines between genres. That is because I believe genres are just a bleep on the timeline of music history. What is Rockabilly without Hillbilly, Blues &

Jason Galaz of Muddy Roots Rock? What about all the music just one step or two over? This is the focus of all Muddy Roots Events and Muddy Roots Records. • How did you create the relationship at Opryland and how was that experience? I utilized my years of business experience to do get in good with the Opryland Resort. I've been in merchandising since 1999 and have supplied shirts and promo items to everyone from small bands, churches, school, business to mega corporations. I know how to work with them.

and inspired all the current legends. I like to honor them while they are still alive by putting them in front of crowds and showing them they are still loved. • What additions to this year's Nashville Boogie excite you? All of them but honestly I will miss most since I'll be running around working. I'm always most excited to get the old school artists out to our events. Louise Rowe was an original member of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys, Wanda Jackson is a rock icon, and Billy Harlan is

It’s a gift that I am grateful for, to be able to work with folks that are responsible for entire styles of music is beautiful. People that went out there and forged new sounds, new ways of doing things and inspired all the current legends. Having a good reputation was also very important. It is also how we got in to the Grand Ole Opry House. You can't just rent the place for any ol' thang. • How exciting is it to meet so many Rockabilly and Roots Americana Legends? making a huge comeback 57 years after he last recorded here! We're even putting out a 7" album by him recently recorded at RCA Studio B. It's fun to bring in international artists that have never played Nashville before like Marcel Bontempi, Scotty Baker, The Doel Brothers & The Go Getters. Being able to work an artist as large as Chris Isaak is a personal achievement and being able to host him at the Grand Ole Opry House is a friggin dream come true.

Jason Galaz of Muddy Roots • Who are you most excited to see up on stage? The Western Fashion show & pinup girls wink wink. • The line-up is amazing, is there an art to your planning the music? There is indeed. To me it is like painting a picture. You need to feel every stroke of the brush in your gut. If you compose an event in this fashion your attendees will be able to feel it. • What can a new comer expect to see when coming for the first time to this year's Nashville Boogie? An overwhelmingly large classy bio-dome

They'll get a taste of what a rockabilly, country and western event is like from a Nashville perspective. • What are your plans to achieve in the next five years? To make all of our projects stronger, put out more records, and host new events in other countries. A full list of projects is: •N ashville Wine On The Rails - A quarterly day excursion aboard a vintage 1950's train to a winery with live bands. • Nashville Boogie Vintage Weekender May 12-15 Tennessee •M uddy Roots Spring Weekender May 20-22 - Indiana •M uddy Roots Europe June 24-26 - Belgium •M uddy Roots Music Festival Sept. 2-5 Tennessee • The Nashville Palace concert series all of 2016 •M uddy Roots Music Recordings Our record Label • P ower Merch - Our merchandising division for brands nationwide. www.powermerch.com •O ur main site is www.muddyrootsrecords.com Make sure you book your reservations now and pre-order your tickets for this year's Nashville Boogie with headliner, Chris Isaak.
