“C

ome What May” is the expression for the month. But, what does that mean? Well, the expression is “no matter what happens,” and it is meant positively. So, no matter what, the outcome will be positive as long as we all put our best foot forward. That’s it! We like that type of thinking at the Garage71 Studios, as we always place our best foot forward. With Spring here, it is about cleaning up details and getting ready for one busy and insane season. We have already been traveling quite a bit hitting Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina, and of course all over Georgia, and we are just Brian “Big Boy” Whitcomb getting ready. We have enjoyed some huge events like: Angel City Motorcycle Rally, Summit Racing Equipment Atlanta Motorama, the grand opening of Speed Standard, Vintage Drag Racing, and 10 year celebrations of some of the best artists including Russ Abbott’s Ink and Dagger, and Chris Saint Clark’s Kustom Thrills Tattoo. The month of May keeps us at a fast pace with more events including hanging with Yelawolf, hitting the road to New Mexico, Thunder Beach in Panama City Beach, Florida, the Nashville Boogie Vintage Weekender, May Ham Fest, and more. WOW! Let’s just say, go to our calendar and follow the crew where ever we are, and head off too! www.garage71.net/events/ May also marks Motorcycle Awareness month. Throughout the issue, we have some various insights from local motorcycle activists that support all aspects of riding. From safety to knowledge, it is extremely important to us at Grease Inc. that all riders are ultimately safe and that laws support our rights as riders just as much as any other individual. I do not want to take away thunder from our columns, but let me say, we must get involved to be heard. And, that does not mean to get the loudest pipes possible on our MC’s. It might make our MCs sound good, or for that matter, make a lot of them sound actually like crap, but we must be recognized and heard properly to be respected and continued to be known as a force you don’t want to really mess with.

Peter Strom is no stranger to the crew at Grease Inc., even if he does reside in Sweden. We wrote an article a few back on a great feature build that Peter submitted to Grease Inc. Peter initially found us on issuu.com, where we publish our on-line version of Grease Inc. Since then, Peter Strom, keeps up with us on social media and has subscribed to the on-line version. This month we are featuring in the reader submission a project Peter Strom built in conjunction with Mooneyes Sweeden. Here is a quick glance at the collaboration. The Mooneyes Bike Show Sweeden was held earlier this year and brought some amazing builds. GRAND OPENING

10

greaseinc.com | MAY 2017

uring the month of May, we thought the feature ride had to reflect the crew at Grease Inc. and Garage71. We fell upon this rare find and heavily sought after 1971 Harley-Davidson FX Super Glide. Now, at it's creation, this motorcycle was far from desired. Actually, she was nicknamed "boattail". This was Willie G.'s attempt to produce a factory made "chopped down" bobber, which was one of the biggest trends in the 60's and 70's.

GREASE INC. MAGAZINE

11

The 71 FX was a combination the rear end of the FLH, but removed the electric starter and place the kickstart that was currently on the XLH Sportster. Other “stolen parts were off the front end using the front headlights and brakes were from the XLH. The drivetrain and engine accessories were from the FLH. Ultimately, Willie named this FX for Factory Experiment. Well, the initial release was not received well at all. But, the variations that were made from this base are the popular models FXR and the Dyna Glide, which is now one of the better selling models of Harley-Davidson. We were excited to shoot this original find at Speed Standard, located right outside old town Canton. This particular ride was almost auctioned off a few years (Continued to page 16)

(Continued from page 12) back, until a new found love for her evolved and the special interest and history behind her. Now, she is well taken care of at the shop. This factory Shovelhead is extremely sought after these days particularly. All original stock Harley-Davidson parts and components, this 71 FX is a dream ride of Evel Knievel himself... We welcome Speed Standard to the local market with their Grand Opening Party in April being a huge success! These guys are no stranger to the Atlanta market or the motorcycle industry. Swing by and check out their shop, which specializes in vintage motorcycles to current American built motorcycles. Located at 1061 Marietta Road, Canton, Georgia. Mother’s Day Tribute BY BRIAN BIG BOY WHITCOMB PHOTOS PROVIDED BY BROOKLYN BRAT PHOTOGRAPHY MODEL: MISS KIMI KAT AND HER SON

A

fter all my years, there is one thing that I still cannot relate to and that is being a mother. I thought about this long and hard, as a mother is a very special creature. She

is the bearer of life. Her instincts are to always protect. She feeds us when we are young through nutrients and life expectancies. She is there when most people are not. Mothers also bear the burden of their young. They celebrate the life moments like no one else can, because they brought us into this world.

GREASE INC. MAGAZINE

I have great respect for mothers these days. I know it is difficult, especially in today’s society. Everyone wants so much to be politically correct, or everything needs to fair. Actually, things don’t need to be fair and that is just one lesson a mother teaches. She helps us focus to compete. She teaches us good and bad sportsman-like conduct. She helps motivate us to get back up and try again when we fall. She is there to support us whether we are the best, or whether we need a little more guidance and help.

May is a special month where we can celebrate Mothers. May 14th is the day this year that is dedicated to all mothers. Your celebration doesn’t need to be going to brunch at the local chain restaurant, that is not necessary. May 14th needs to be focused to say thank you, to say I love you, to let your moms know that no matter what, they did their best to show you a good path in life and set you on a direction to pursue those life dreams.

know this is not your typical riding attire, but I just had to pose with a motorcycle for the month of May! It is, after all, motorcycle awareness month. Not only this month, but everyday, look for motorcycles on the road! Here in Georgia people ride pretty much year round, so always be on the lookout. I love the sound of my husband’s motorcycle when I hear him coming back down our street after a ride! So, about this gorgeous dress from Voodoo Vixen! It is the Primrose Black Wrap Dress. It has the most amazing fit and is so comfortable too. No hassle with zippers or messing up your hair; just wrap and tie! It’s that easy to look amazing. The embroidered patchwork flowers are placed so nicely along the side, and one single flower on the opposite shoulder makes for a nice balance. It’s not busy and it’s the perfect touch for a sassy black dress. It has a plunging v-neckline and cap sleeves. The waist is fitted with the tie, and the skirt has some flare. It is a very stretchy jersey material. This dress can be styled many ways. It’s absolutely perfect for a date, concert, or car show, etc. This style from Voodoo Vixen is available in sizes S-XL. It can be ordered directly from them or at many stockists worldwide. I love the look and can’t wait to get many wears out of it this season! Voodoo Vixen is a vintage inspired label that has unique styles for the modern woman. They are based out of London, but have in-house designers in both London and L.A., here in the U.S. Their designs are high quality and very pretty. I have always been extremely pleased with Voodoo Vixen. I accessorized this look with bangles and earrings from Splendette. I wanted to bring out pops of color from the primrose patches. They are from the Fakelite and Starbrite Collections. They are available at Splendette.com or several stockists across the globe. The hair flower is by Shazam Vintage Pin Up Hair Flowers and is a Fruity Black Orchid Trio Comb. I love the detail Shazam puts into their hair pieces! Special thanks to Joey Power for the amazing chopper to shoot with! It’s a 2005 American Ironhorse Texas Chopper with 124 cubic inch S&S motor. It’s fast, loud, and definitely turns heads.

hey’re a band you should know if you pay attention to kustom kulture and underground rock & roll. They’re the Koffin Kats and have established their name by touring the world multiple times, several albums released, and a distinctive sound resembling Dave Vanian having a baby with The Misfits these guys are one hell of an act. While on tour, I got to sit down with the band to catch up and discuss music.

GREASE INC. MAGAZINE

31

Andy: What's it like having Tommy back in the band? Vic: When Tommy left, he was in a certain place in his life and it was the right time for him to leave. Eric and I were ready to keep moving forward with touring and playing. It's a lot of work staying on the road most of the year. Tommy has been my best friend for many years and it's always a goal of mine for him to be happy with what he's doing. When he told me he was interested in coming back, my response was, "Great, come on back!" I will say, if Slash wants to play in the band, Tommy's gone! Andy: Let's dig into the new album, it's not through a label. You guys did it on your own. Vic: Koffin Kats Records, this is the first record. We're super proud of it. Once Tommy

32

came back to the band we started laying the groundwork for it. As with any album that we write, little pieces start coming together and suddenly "BOOM" you've got songs laid out. Everything went so smooth with writing it. It went smoother than I can ever remember doing an album. I think with him back all three of us were just popping ideas off of each other. "What do you think about this? Oh, okay it sucks move on", but that's how we write things. If it sounds like a song we've done before, we drop it. When we got together and sat down we decided let's do this new album and let's reflect back on the old material. Now, when someone says, "I miss the old stuff, I wish you guys wrote songs like the old stuff," we can now say, "Here you go!" Andy: How did it feel putting it out on your own label? Vic: It felt good because we have control over where it goes and what we want to have done with it. I don't have anything against record labels, I just think it gets to a point being in a band like us who likes to do things ourselves, and with the Internet where we can release things ourselves and actually receive profit from it. Rather than watch money filter through a hundred fingers that don't need to be there. We're lined up with a regular distribution company, we do a lot of online sales, we're also at a point where we're selling everything off of our own website. Tommy: It's hard when you jump on a new record label and go through all their hoops. And having to deal with them trying to figure out how to target the market with you and all their other bands. The Internet has changed everything. Vic: Our last record label was great, and they continue to be supportive. It's great when new bands can get with a label with some clout behind it, because it makes your band look better and gives you the opportunity to work with other bands on the same label.

34

greaseinc.com | MAY 2017

Andy: Do you have a favorite song from the new album, "Party Time In the End Times?" E-Ball: It's hard to say which song is your favorite when you're a part of the album. They're all our babies! Vic: I always like the ones that nobody else likes, but then again it's so new I don't know what's the least liked song. "Until The Sun Explodes" is probably my favorite on the album, so far. Tommy: That's the one song that isn't a favorite of mine. It's my least favorite baby. Vic: See! Andy: Will you guys be putting this album on vinyl? Vic: Yes, there's a very good chance. In fact, we're saving up the money to do it. We're hoping by late Spring we'll have the album out on vinyl. Andy: Let me toss this at you, we've discussed how the Internet has had a huge affect for bands with their music and promotion. Then we switch gears to talk about vinyl, which is a very old technology. How do you see vinyl fitting into today's music world and what do you think when someone asks you to press albums on vinyl? E-Ball: I think there's a need, especially those who love music, to have something physical. Especially some of the older crowd. We all appreciate a good vinyl record because you can hold it in your hand. With the Internet, you can download the audio part of an album, but you're missing the artwork that goes into it. I remember all the times I would by a new CD or vinyl record, open it, read all the lyrics inside, and you don't have that as often anymore. People in our crowd are saying, "I want that element." Vic: I'm not a huge audiophile, but I recognize the difference if you play a song from your iPod and when you place a needle on that vinyl record. There's an "oomph" there

36

greaseinc.com | MAY 2017

that you don't get with digital media. If you're going to pay for an album, to have a physical product - people like that. Some people don't give a shit, but our crowd does. They like to say, "Go look at my shit", as they show off their collection. We also had our record cover designed so each time you go look at it you find something new in the artwork. Andy: Any great tour stories from the road? E-Ball: The tour, so far, has been extremely good to us. Vic: Tommy's smell has been pretty bad. Tommy: Yeah, it has gotten up there. Vic: That's one thing we haven't missed about being on tour with Tommy the last 6 or 7 years, is the smell. Everything smells so much better without Tommy. He comes back and says, "Hey guys, remember this", and he wafts his blanket. Ugh! Just three days ago we were driving and I keep smelling something. I look behind me at Eric and he's just sitting there reading, but he has his socks off and I know I'm smelling feet. He puts his shoes on and the smell is still there. Then, in the back I see Tommy in the mirror with his

38

greaseinc.com | MAY 2017

mohawk trying to stand up, but a little crooked from the night before. Everytime he moves I can smell this rancid smell throughout the van. Eric catches it and covers up his mouth, so we had to stop. We made Tommy go buy Lysol and spray down the back of the van and all his shit! Andy: Your style is more a subculture genre. Nowhere near mainstream. How do you see yourselves fitting next to that world? Vic: We've never tried to influence the band to be family friendly." It's always been "this is what we write and how we sound." We don't try to sugarcoat what we do and who we are. With that said, we've always accepted every type of person who comes to our show. You don't have to look a certain way to come out and enjoy what we do. It's a shame when someone thinks, "I can only listen to this type of music." You do what you need to do, but it's not a way to live as far as I'm concerned. M

ay is motorcycle awareness month, but for those of us that ride, every month is motorcycle awareness month. Here are some tips and suggestions so we can make it through an entire year. Let us start with the biggest problem facing all of us who ride, drive, or scoot on public highways. Distracted drivers. It is unfortunate, but the problem is substantial and is growing. The biggest challenge facing lawmakers relating to this issue is the inability to find a workable solution. For motorcycles, this is a bigger concern because car drivers do not look for us to begin with. Throw in the car driver who is texting or looking at their phone, and now we have a bigger problem.

By Chris Carr

Here is what we know. The number one motorcycle accident is the vehicle that violates your right of way, the car pulling in front of you, mostly at intersections. In fact, some studies suggest that as many as 4 motorcyclists die every single day as the result of another vehicle violating our right of way. One of the best strategies I can offer is "Ride as if your invisible." If youtake the position that no one sees you when you ride, you cannot be surprised when someone actually pulls out if front of you. It is a simple solution for riding regardless of where you ride. Flashing headlights, eye contact, gesturing, none of that matters. Just know this, they are not looking for you; consequently they don't see what they are not looking for. Reaction experts say the average reaction time is 1.5 seconds. So, when you approach an intersection, cover that front brake. Being able to get on the brakes earlier translates into quicker braking, which translates into feet saved. Another easy trick is never enter an intersection without another vehicle . Entering the intersection with another vehicle reduces your risk. While these two tips may not seem earth shattering advice, the simple things seem to work the best. Situational Awareness: Fighter pilots receive some of best training in the world, and that training produces very disciplined, methodical individuals that have the ability to make decisions immediately and without hesitation. One of their key concepts is referred to as situational awareness, which is

42

understanding and being completely aware and cognizant of your environment in its totality. The strategy is straightforward; be aware of all the alligators surrounding the boat, but only deal with the one that is closest to the boat, the one that provides the imminent threat. in other words, this strategy is a matter of prioritizing the countless threats we face when riding and dealing with them in their proper order. For a motorcyclist this is indeed a formidable task, as potential threats challenge us constantly when we ride. For a pilot it is Aviate, Navigate, and Communicate. For a biker, it is much the same, Circulate, Navigate, and Execute. Another acronym I share with my students is WIN. What IS Important Now. Hall of fame baseball player Ken Griffey said it best when he said, " To succeed in baseball, as in life, you must make constant adjustments." When we ride we are continually improvising as our environment and traffic changes. It is part of the challenge, and for sure it is part of the fun of riding. So while May is motorcycle awareness month, as a rider every month is rider awareness month. Challenge yourself to be a better rider and keep your eyes on the alligators.

By Ned Williams

Days of Summer begins...

W

hile not recognized nationally, most of the states do so through proclamations signed by their governors. But the question remains, what does this mean to America’s riders, and equally as important, what does it mean to the non-riders who share our nation’s roads? For those of us who have answered the now-famous question, “why we ride?”, May is about about being seen and heard by many who have forgotten the sight or sound of motorcycles sharing the road with them. For much of the country, May is the beginning of the spring-summer-fall riding season. For many in the colder climates, these are the three seasons where their bikes are safe to operate in those riders' individually chosen comfort zones. While in warmer climates riders may enjoy a 12-month riding season, these all-year riders often have to deal with a cellphone-obsessed public who routinely fails to see them 12 months out of the year.

GREASE INC. MAGAZINE

But, what does “motorcycle awareness” mean to everyone else? And how should riders encourage those entrapped in the soul crushing cage, often called an automobile, to open their eyes and ears? Not only to the motorcycle stopping at the red light in front of them, but to the concerns of the dangers of distracted drivers around motorcycles? One simple answer is for riders to get on their motorcycles and ride, day or night, rain (if you have to) or shine. It does not matter if you have loud pipes, a slip-on race can, or the quietest emission friendly single cylinder bike, the simple act of operating your motorcycle helps awaken the “snow blind” drivers that you and your fellow riders have rejoined on America’s roads. This would also be a great time to try out your new high visibility vest or jacket; or maybe try the helmet mounted brake light you were thinking about getting. Another easy thing to do is visit your local bike nights. These events are a great reason to get together with your fellow riders, check out each others’ bikes, and, not to mention, ride with your friends to these events. A large pack of motorcycles dominating a parking lot always gets the attention of the both the riding and non-riding public. It helps build a positive opinion of riders by non-riders. So, give your local bike night a try if you have not already. Lastly, now is the season to plan those quick rides you and your friends have been talking about forever. Day trips and weekend runs are great things to plan for the month of May, and for all summer long. Be seen, be heard, and hopefully, just maybe, those that do not ride will be a little more aware that we are on the road with them. Lastly, another great way to increase awareness, is ride your motorcycle to your local motorcycle sporting events. Atlanta just had a great event at the Dixie speedway when the American Flat Track series came to town. The battle between Indian and Harley played out on the dirt oval. Grease was there and readers can expect a ton of pictures in an upcoming issue. Ned Williams is the host of The Rumbling Newshour which airs weekly, Tuesday night at 7:00pm Eastern on Garage71.com
