Remembering

9-11 By Mike Thies

S

eptember 11, 2001, 19 militant Islamic extremists carried out suicide attacks against U.S. targets. Two hijacked planes were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon, and another plane crashed in a field in Shanksville, PA. These attacks resulted in extensive loss of life and horrific destruction! Over 3,000 people were killed during these attacks, including more than 400 police officers and firefighters, 343 firefighters and paramedics, 23 New York City police officers, and 37 Port Authority police officers died while working to complete an evacuation of the buildings. Only six people in the World Trade Center towers at the time of their collapse survived. Almost 10,000 others were treated for injuries, many severe. “If we learn nothing else from this tragedy, we learn that life is short and there is no time for hate.” – Sandy Dahl, wife of Flight 93 pilot Jason Dahl, in Shanksville, Pa., in 2002 United Flight 93 – was hijacked after leaving Newark International Airport headed of California.

8

GREASE INC. MAGAZINE | greaseinc.com | SEPTEMBER 2015

Passengers on board learned of events in New York and Washington via cell phones and knowing that the aircraft was going to be crashed into something, a group of passengers and flight attendants attacked the hijackers and the plane crashed in rural Pennsylvania. All 45 people aboard were killed. Its intended target is not known, but theories include the White House and the U.S. Capitol. “With almost no time to decide, [your loved ones] gave the entire country an incalculable gift. They saved the Capitol from attack. They saved God knows how many lives. They saved the terrorists from claiming the symbolic victory of smashing the center of American government. … They allowed us to survive as a country that could fight terror and still maintain liberty and still welcome people from all over the world from every religion and race and culture as long as they shared our values, because ordinary people given no time at all to decide did the right thing.” – President Bill Clinton in Shanksville, Pa., in 2011 This is history that everyone in the world knows; yet it needs to be told and retold. As each time it is told, a new perspective seems to appear! The challenge is to bring it back to a personal experience that has value and builds strength. A recent trip to the new 911 Museum revealed a very personal tour bringing anyone who enters an opportunity to do that. The Museum has a massive collection of artifacts, pictures, and videos. Stories of victims fill the

museum, put together in a remarkable array for any visitor willing to take a few hours and reflect on the impact of that terrible day; what happened in Manhattan, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania. Inside, visitors will see the last piece of ruins removed from the site, actual steel from the South Tower, the wrecked remains of a fire truck, a pair of bloody high heeled shoes, and wallets carried by those who were lost. They will see missing-person photos on the walls and recorded voices of victims who made their last phone calls to say goodbye. Visitors are asked to explore the Museum at their own pace. An average visit can take about two hours. The Main Exhibition has three parts: the Day of 9/11, Before 9/11 and After 9/11. It tells the story of what happened on 9/11, including the events at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the story of Flight 93. The exhibition explores the background leading up to the events and examines their aftermath and continuing implications. Just one of many powerful features is a minute-by-minute re-creation of the morning and its aftermath. Another is a multimedia presentation depicting how, precisely, the towers collapsed. There is an area focusing on Pennsylvania and the Pentagon; with tape loops of survivors telling how they got out. Two hours is not near long enough to cover it all, and too long for the tears the visit likely produces. Everyone should visit as least once!

n a world, newly dominated by men who respect and adorn the beard, we are on the lookout for a product to help us keep our beards in shape and looking respectable. In this endeavor, we have Sean Mahoney, and his line of products at Mahoney’s Beard Brew. 25

After hours of studying, relentless trial and error, Sean came up with the methods to make a truly great product. Even to this day, every single batch of Mahoney’s Beard Brew product is made, blended, and poured by Sean’s own hands.

Sean’s inspiration for his company came from his deep Irish pride, and his love for a good brew.

Sean’s inspiration for his company came from his deep Irish pride, and his love for a good brew. After using several different beard products himself, Sean felt he could create something wholly different, and formulate a working product for the avid beard aficionado.

26

Mahoney’s Beard Brew has a fine line of scents and products, like their new premium scent “Water of Life”. This scent, that others have tried and failed, is an authentic whiskey scented oil, and is one of Sean’s finest achievements at Mahoney’s. With Sean’s never-ending efforts to step outside the box, and bring original and new scents to his line, his customers can count on his passion for a great product, and can anticipate great things in his drive to bring his “shenanskies” to those looking for something to use on their beards.

I

with Buttercream Bettie

recently had the pleasure of shooting at one of Atlanta’s must see summer hot spots, The Anderson’s Sunflowers. When I say hot, I mean really hot! It’s so pretty though, totally worth all the sweating. I try to make it there ever year. This time I had just received a gorgeous Blindside Dress and bag from Banned. I knew right away that was the outfit for this year! The dress and bag are a beautiful light blue with a cherry and pink blossom pattern. The dress has a beautiful sweetheart neckline with ruching, decorative buttons, and short sleeves. It has a flattering fitted waist and full hem skirt. I paired it with a wide red belt and white petticoat. It really is a beautiful dress; I couldn’t be happier with it! The handbag is just as impressive! Banned Apparel is based out of the U.K., but their items can be found at many retailers worldwide. I definitely recommend looking at their collections to add to your wardrobe. The quality and style is exceptional in my book and I collect a lot of vintage inspired clothing! www.bannedapparel.co.uk

Bo Huff D

RAGERTON - Bo Huff (Gerald Douglas Huff), 72, passed away at his home in Dragerton on August 4, 2015 after a 5 year battle of cancer (multiple myeloma). He was born March 12, 1943 in Clarksville, AR to Junior Gervis and Corene Crossno Huff. Bo is survived by his companion Monique Wood, his sister Carolyn (Chuck) Abeyta, Dragerton, UT; seven children, Lisa (Ron) Weeks, Apex, NC, Michelle (Sean) Madole, Washoe Valley, NV, Amy (Paul) Pickering, Tunbridge, VT, Kendall Smith, Dragerton, UT, James Huff, Draper, UT, Madeleine Huff, Dragerton, UT, Junior Huff, Dragerton, UT; nine grandchildren, Anthony & Jessica Weeks, Apex, NC, Michael, Ryan & Isabelle Madole, Washoe Valley, NV, Max & Juna Valdez, Dragerton, UT, and Johnnie & Corene Huff, Dragerton, UT; and dozens of other relatives and loved ones that have made such an impact on him throughout his life. Bo’s family moved from Arkansas to Dragerton to find work in the coal mines in 1951. He first took an interest in cars after watching the older guys in town with their lowered down cars. This turned in to the obsession that lasted a lifetime. Bo was a world famous custom car builder who has won numerous awards at prestigious car shows. He was an avid member of the Dead Sleds Car Club. Bo

34

Life Legacy was inducted into the National Rod & Custom Hall of Fame and the Kustom Kemps of America Hall of Fame for his life’s work. Bo went to Denver, CO in the early 60’s to attend a body and fender school. After working in Salt Lake for a few years he moved to Southern California and opened his first custom paint shop. There he made a reputation for his superior artistry. During the 70’s he toured the country and ended up in Arkansas. In the early 80’s he opened a custom car shop in Lincoln, AR. He then moved back to Dragerton and worked in the coalmine where his father had worked for 23 years. After awhile he decided coalmining wasn’t for him and opened a custom car shop in Sunnyside where his shop is still in operation. Bo was preceded in death by his sister Ada Jean Huff, and his parents Junior Gervis and Corene Crossno Huff. The family would like to thank the Huntsman and the University of Utah Hospital for all of their care during his battle with cancer.
