e have made it through the “Dog Days of Summer” here in the Southeast. Though it seems to feel like one of the hottest years, I can hear it now when winter sets in, “man, I can’t wait for summer!” It’s always the same good jokes among us all. As it gets harder and harder to please ourselves and others, Grease Inc. and Garage71 strive to make it happen each and every month.

The feedback on the new format continues to be exactly what we intended. We hope you like the change up to this month’s layout as we head into our 8th year. Make sure you plan to come out and celebrate it with us in Historic Canton on October 1st for our annual, Hell on Wheels. This year’s line up is amazing, from Drivin N Cryin’s Kevn Kinney solo band the Chattahoochee Coochie Men to Phil Rocker out of South America. Several riders from the Cannonball Run will be celebrating the finish of the race at this year’s Hell on Wheels. We will have kustom kulture artists including featured artistS, Sid Garrand and Randy Bishop. We will have several familiar faces from various TV shows including Cafe Racer’s Alain Bernard of Santiago Choppers. Wait until you see what Alain has in store for all of us at this year’s event. There will be carnie side show acts by Captain and Maybelle. There is the insane car and bike show including vintage bicycles with hand built trophies by several local builders, all aiming to get their hands on the Master Trophy! It’s all about good fun and celebrating with all of you again for another year. For more information go to www.hellonwheelsevent.com As we head into the changing of seasons make sure to get your rides tuned up. Check your tire pressure and tread. Have your favorite local mechanic go through a thorough inspection. Road conditions change and the best cruising weather is right around the corner. We want to ensure everyone is safe while having a great time enjoying the wide open roads. We look forward seeing you in a few weeks at Hell on Wheels. Make sure you give us a like on Facebook at facebook.com/greaseinc and give us a follow on Insagram @greaseinc.

Sail Away Summer! S

ummer is sailing away and I'm sending it off in style with a beautiful dress from Emily and Fin. It's been a long, hot season! This Claudia Dress is perfect for those hot days. It's a neat color combination of navy with sailboat print in white, green, and yellow accents. This dress is 100% cotton, so it's light and gently fitted. It features capped sleeves and a scoop neckline. The skirt has boxed pleats and is also very full. It's flattering the way it falls below your waist too. The Claudia Dress even has pockets, which ladies love to have on their dresses! The length is perfect, just below the knee! This is my first Emily and Fin dress and I absolutely adore it! As always with UK sizing please check your measurements before you order. Emily and Fin was Established in 2002 and has become a well known UK brand that is now stocked globally. Their studio is located in London which allows them to pay close attention to detail and ensure quality for their garments. You will love getting a timeless piece from them, I promise! My bangles are from Splendette and hair flower is Shazam Vintage Pin-Up Hair Flowers.

When (age) did you start getting into cars? When I was 15, I laid eyes on a teal 1964 ford thunderbird on an old car lot my mom took me to in Arcadia, California. That was my first love. I wanted that car so badly. Is there a specific person who got you into it? I always loved classics but it wasn’t until I began dating my boyfriend Bryan (almost two years ago) that I started to really want to get into the mechanics of it. Him & his brother own a custom hot rod shop (hermanbrothersgarage.com) I really loved seeing the cars they’d bring in & turn into customers dream cars. Then he took me to a pick a part to look for some power steering pumps for his ‘69 firebird. We left there super dirty with two pumps and probably 5 chin splitters that we spent hours searching for & removing from cars. I was hooked.

What’s your favorite part about working on cars? Makes me feel like a mad scientist when you’re essentially “Frankensteining” a car back to life. I especially love when I get to tact weld things. Plus I love the quality time I’ve gotten to spend with my brother Matty who helps me out with my comet. Hes into cars too but modern ones. I feel like he’s coming around though. He’s been talking about wanting a 66 mustang fastback. The Malibu: what parts did you work on? 1968 Chevelle Malibu: I helped with the front balance, the bumpers & I got to help build & install a custom exhaust. That was by far my favorite project, I wish I could build exhausts every day, it’s that Frankenstein type of work I was talking about. The truck: what parts did you work on? 1970 Chevy C-10: The truck was already fully restored by my bryan and his brother Wayne so I got to help with some upgrades they wanted to do such as putting in a fuel injection kit & installing an msd box. That experience gave me a whole new appreciation for the holley single barrel carb on my comet. The Comet: what parts did you work on? I replaced the fuel filters & freeze plugs. Drained the oil & cleaned out the fuel lines. I put the original carb back on, replaced the hose to the radiator & my brother & I ran a cam break in process. Now I’m just saving for the paint job. I’ve got all the original trim & it was a one owner car so I’m pretty excited to restore her back to her vin code & enter her into some shows!! What’s your favorite car? I have a top 5: 1960 Studebaker Hawk coupe, 1961 AMC Rambler, I still need to own a ‘64 thunderbird. The next car I’m looking for is a 1963 Galaxie 500 that I would love to try and pull off a full diesel swap. But I guess my dream car truly is my 62 Mercury Comet. Honestly, I still can’t believe she’s mine. How long have you been modeling? Almost 9 years worried What magazines have you been in? I’ve been in several magazines; two Japan based publications, two US magazines, 1 from Australia & two from Hawaii • Elle Japan • Cosmopolitan • Flux Hawaii • Manifold Magazine • Disfunktion Mag • O h & now Grease Inc What’s your favorite part of modeling? Traveling!!! I also really love being a part of bringing a vision or concept to life. It’s fun to have the tear sheets, I try to save them to show my theoretical future kids Favorite photographer? I really like Bob D’olivo, an automobile photographer from the 50s-60s. Chances are you’ve saved his work if you’ve ever googled car images from that era. Also, my mom. She’s always taking pictures. If you were to take a fun drive, where and what car would you choose? My dream drive is gonna be the day I take my comet out of the shop. Im gonna get my boyfriend and our two dogs and take a super leisurely drive through the back roads from our home town area. I already have the music on a play list entitled: comet cruisin 62.

Rules by Kevin Davis

GREASE INC. MAGAZINE

A

t some time or another, we have all heard the phrase, “chivalry is dead…” While this bears true in technicality, in such that men in our society are no longer duty bound to uphold the knightly ideals of courage, honor, courtesy, justice, and a readiness to help the weak, we all should strive to uphold the values and code of the modern gentleman. 25

Rules To which begs the question, “What is a modern gentleman?” While the definition of a gentleman has changed through the times, it has become apparent that many of us need an updated and era-specific refresher in what it means to be a gentleman. Times change, societies rules adapt, but the root principles of a gentleman are steadfast. So, to that effect, let’s take a look at what it means to be a modern gentleman:

I: LEARN AND EARN REPSECT Sincerity is the cornerstone or respect. If those around you gather a sense that you speak from the heart, and that you stand behind your convictions, you’ll present yourself as man worthy and deserving of respect. In the course of conversation too many of us simply impatiently wait for our turn to talk. Such notions cause us to look self-centered and egotistical, neither of which call for respect. Learning to genuinely listen to others shows those around you your interest in their thoughts and opinions, and garners a level of respect through being perceived as modest and genuine. Do your absolute best to be reliable. No one breathing holds respect for a man who falls short of his promises and expectations. Come through on your commitments, call when you say you’ll call, show up on time, and most importantly… STAND BY YOUR WORD.

II: FOUNDATIONS OF CIVILTY No matter your walk of life, strive to be the best at what you do. Take heed and remember that there is ALWAYS room for improvement, and ALWAYS something new to learn. Yet it’s important to remember that striving to be your best, while remaining humble, is the mark of a true gentleman. READ. A long standing adage, but a proper one, is knowledge is power. Furthermore, any man who is well-read is a standout from your typical under-achiever. To this

Rules effect, a gentleman should possess an air of intelligence about himself, thus effectively discerning himself a gentleman. Be considerate to the misfortunes of others. Only a weak man shakes his head and points the finger at someone down on their luck. It is the job of a gentleman to extend a helping hand when the time calls for it, and to remember that while every man makes mistakes, it’s not our place to hand out judgment. Better always to help, than to harm. A gentleman embodies the statue of treating every woman with the same amount of respect and civility that you would give to your mother, sister, or daughter. The job of a gentleman is not to pander to a woman, but to show them we respect and honor their right to dignity and grace.

III: FOLLOW THE “MAN-CODE” Too many of us have forgotten the basic manners of holding a door. What’s worse is that many of us believe a gentleman ONLY holds a door for a lady. Such a notion is furthest from the truth. A true gentleman doesn’t just hold a door for a pretty lady; he does so simply because it’s a nice and generous thing to do for ANYONE. No matter your sense of style, be it punk, biker, hipster, etc., EVERY man should own and effectively rock at least one suit. As they say, first impressions are lasting impressions, and nothing commands a better impression than a well-tailored suit. MASTER and IMPLEMENT a good handshake. No gentleman extends a hand reminiscent of a limp and fragile cod-fish, nor does he overdo it with a crushing vicegrip force clamp of death. Look people in the eye. No gentleman’s eyes wander around the room during a decent conversation, and neither do they get cast to the ground during an altercation. Show confidence and grace in both situations, set your eyes to those in front of you.

Rules Don’t waste your time talking behind people’s back, especially in an attempt to make yourself look better. Such an action makes you look trivial, as well as weak. Furthermore, keep all negative social media activities to an ABSOLUTE minimum. No true gentleman involves himself in petty Twitter squabbles or passive-aggressive Facebook posts, it just lacks class. Whether you’re with friends, your significant other, or someone you’ve never met, nothing shows a lack of appreciation and manners than staying buried in your phone. No man is marked a gentleman by wasting his time in a social gathering by constantly checking social media, or conquering that last level in Candy Crush. Know how to cook at least a few good meals. This serves three purposes: (1) Nothing shatters a gentleman’s image worse than assuming a woman should always cook. (2) Women love a man who can cook. (3) Every gentleman deserves to eat well. The guidelines and statutes of today’s modern gentleman are innumerable. Yet, hopefully the aforementioned aspects shed enough light and understanding into the foundations of what it means to be a modern gentleman. The image of a gentleman will change through time, and society’s rules will deem different as we progress into tomorrow. But the principle foundations remain rooted and solid. It was George Bernard Shaw who said it best… “A gentleman is one who puts more into the world than he takes out”

The Year Music Died

By Erin 'RadioFox' Watson

T

here’s a saying, ‘only the good die young’, but how do we define good? How do we determine youth? They’re both relative words, and in today’s society, they mean something completely different in Hollywood than to

us commoners. I believe the talented souls we lost were good men, in that they brought the world some of the most timeless, imaginative, and groundbreaking music we’ve ever known. Beyond that? I wouldn’t know. Maybe beyond that, it doesn’t matter. We each have a hundred stories that involve Lemmy Kilmister, David Bowie and Prince. Whether it was ones’ music playing in the background as we had our first sip of alcohol, virginity lost, a breakup…all three have helped make up the soundtracks to our lives. Bottom line, we weren’t ready to let go of those three. They were too young, in every sense. But, instead of us focusing on the obvious loss, let’s toss out some facts that may help us get to know these pioneers a little better.

32

greaseinc.com | SEPTEMBER 2016

The Year Music Died

Lemmy

(Ian Fraser Kilmister-b. 24Dec1945 d. 28Dec2015)

• Grew up in North Wales • His father was a concert pianist • His nickname is believed to have come from his classmates at Sir Thomas Jones’ School in Amlwch. He was known for borrowing money to gamble with and ‘lend me’ turned into ‘Lemmy’ • Loved and worked with horses (I knew we were kindred spirits) • Was a roadie for Jimi Hendrix in the late 60’s (he handled Jimi’s guitars for about 3 months) • After getting fired from Hawkwind (for jail time due to drugs, in the early 70’s) he formed Motorhead • He considered himself more punk than metal • He bedded over 1,000 women • You can learn new bedroom tricks from Lemmy through a book by Paul Miles titled ‘Sex Tips from Rock Stars’ • His favorite hangout, The Rainbow, is only a couple blocks away from his apartment in LA • He’s been in several movies including ‘Airheads’ and a Ron Jeremy porn, but the one that matters most is his documentary ‘Lemmy’ • He lead a very fast life, and lived 40 years longer than what he expected…and with so many amazing musicians looking up to him as, arguably, “The King of Rock n Roll”, he ultimately was a genuinely nice guy and great friend.

34

greaseinc.com | SEPTEMBER 2016

David Bowie

(David Robert Jones-b. 8Jan1947 d. 10Jan2016)

• Grew up in South London (Brixton) • Was in choir and dance classes at Burnt Ash Junior School • The song ‘Tutti Frutti’ by Little Richard was what sealed the music deal for Bowie • Elvis Presley had a huge impact on his dancing • He almost lost his eye in a fight over a girl (he lived with a permanently damaged pupil) • The guy that almost took out Bowie’s eye was his album cover artist for years (they got over the girl drama) • He was in an ice cream commercial (and was rejected for a Kit Kat commercial) in the late 60’s • His alter ego ‘Ziggy’ almost took over completely (questioning his own sanity which he admitted was in direct relation to his heavy cocaine addiction)

GREASE INC. MAGAZINE

• Stevie Ray Vaughan was the guitarist on the smash hit ‘Let’s Dance’ • Even though The Labyrinth is a cult classic now, it was a huge failure at the box office and director, Jim Henson’s last movie before his death (Bowie played Jareth, the Goblin King) • Had eleven number 1 albums Bowie had an amazing eye for anything artistic, and it carried through his personal life, too. Throwing all of himself into his woman, music and art. His art collection, he bought or painted himself, is set to go to auction later this year.

35

The Year Music Died

Prince

(Prince Rogers Nelson-b. 7June1958 d. 21April2016)

• Grew up in Minneapolis • His father was a pianist, his mother a jazz singer • His name came from his father’s jazz band, Prince Rogers Trio • The first song he wrote was on his father’s piano, at the age of 7 and titled ‘Funk Machine’ • He was born epileptic, but has said he was cured of seizures because of angels

• He played football, baseball and basketball for Bryant Junior High and then Central High School in Minneapolis (one of my favorite Dave Chappelle episodes is when they all go over to Prince’s house to play a game of pick-up) • He was an animal rights activist • He was a Jehovah’s Witness and even went door to door to talk about the religion in the early 2000’s • Movie, Purple Rain, was written around Prince, was a box office success and was the only film he starred in and didn’t direct (it won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score, and also nominated for a Razzie Award for Worst Original Song ‘Sex Shooter’) • He played 27 different instruments on his debut album ‘For You’ • He has sold over 100 million albums worldwide • Prince owned his androgyny, wore stacks on stage like a boss, slayed every instrument he picked up (and ladies, too) and was also one of the most generous and caring guys. He gave to charity and even helped musician friends pay off insane doctor’s bills.

All in all, each of these men contributed more than just music to several generations. They left legacies. Could it be that they reached their peaks, and went out shining brightly, instead of fading away like a burnt out star? That would seem to be the poetic way to leave this world. In any case, they left this world better for having known them, even if just through their music and films. It’s our job now to help these legends live. Teach our children, and children’s children to ‘Just Dance in the Purple Rain One More Fucking Time’.
