S

eptember is already here. I seriously can’t believe it. Time plays tricks on you, so it seems. One minute it seems like time stands still. Then, other times, you can’t even keep up with how quick it goes by. It is a constant reminder you have only one shot at this life and you better make it “worth it”. That’s something hard to grasp. The “sunshine” of my life enters her graduating year in high school. I, myself, have quietly gone back to school to take more continuing educational classes to stay current with trends, technology, and skills. I am on the cusp of hitting the big 50, and I really just don’t know what to think about it all.

These past 71 days of summer have mostly been spent on the road. We have put thousand of miles on our girl, and she has rocked every mile logged. I wrapped up in Mitchell, South Dakota, after emceeing and hosting a performance by “High Flying” Cole Freeman, located at the Corn Palace, and presented by Brian Klock of Klock Werks, only to turn around and hit the open road to be back here in Atlanta for an annual event we host with Big In Da Streets Magazine in Athens. It’s been an open road this summer, full of amazing stories. And, just think, it’s far from over! As the new issue comes out, I will be in Milwaukee at the Harley-Davidson Museum for the 115th Anniversary. This is gonna be epic. I will be hosting again for Mr. Cole Freeman while taking in some additional opportunities during the celebrations. From there, I will meet up with Big John of Guys and

6

Gals Collectibles someplace on the road, as we hit Route 66 and head off to New Mexico for a visit in Tucumcari, and then to the Downtown Showdown in Albuquerque. In New Mexico, we will be working hard on next year’s “Great American Road Trip”, Rockin Route 66. After hosting Downtown Showdown, we will continue west to hit California and Washington State before returning home to celebrate 10 years at Hell on Wheels in Angel City, October 10th-14th. And promise me, this is one celebration you do not want to miss!!! Four days in Hell with the latest and best addition ever, Dirt Track Grudge Races are here! We shared samples of this summer in the September issue of Grease Inc. From Rockabilly Rumble 5, to a sneak peek of High Flying Cole Freeman, we wanted to give you a look at some of the highlights of being on the road. It is at the point we are gaining so much footage, there is just not enough time or space to share it all at once. We are beginning to document meetings with the crew on various events behind the scenes. Meetings and discussions. Debates and compromising. We aren’t sure yet what we are going to do with all this information and filming, but maybe it will come in handy at some point... Make sure you check out the updated on-line version of Grease Inc. on Issuu.com. We have made some serious platform changes that will provide easier access as well as allowing you to download copies for later viewing. We will share on social media the links for you, and you may always subscribe to us for a home delivery. We are nationwide and gaining that momentum thanks to all of you who have supported us through our ten year journey. You can always find us for the latest updates on these social media platforms: Instagram: @greaseinc Facebook: facebook.com/greaseinc & facebook.com/garage71 We will see you at Hell on Wheels X.

Bettie

s Snow White is to Cinderella, so is Bettie Page in comparison to Marilyn Monroe. While fairy tale princesses have their place in art and film, the same can be said about sex symbols and pin-up models. If you were to walk down a street and ask who Marilynn Monroe is, even fifty years after her death, most people would be able to tell you that she was a glamourous film actress and pinup model. If you were to pose the same question regarding Bettie Page, most people would ask,

“Who is she?” But, if you were to ask someone who aspires to the counter culture gothic or pin-up scenes, you would come to find out exactly who this pale face, beauty with jet-black hair and piercing blue eyes really is. Her baby-bang hair style has been copied since the 1950s and resurged back into style since the 1980s. Born Betty Mae Page, this southern beauty from Nashville dreamed of stardom. In 1949, while pursuing an acting career, she was approached by Jerry Tibbs to model for some photos, in exchange for building a portfolio. Tibbs is credited to recommending baby-bangs, which would lead to her characteristic hair-style.

Bettie was a natural in front of the camera and was at ease in the photo sessions. Her notoriety is mostly known for the work that she did for Irving Klaw, whose business delved into still photos and film of the fetish kind. These bondage style films include: Teasearma and Striparama, as well as a plethora of playful shorts. I came to admire this lively vixen as I studied her for my own nightclub acts, for the club I founded in the 1990s called, “Mon Cherie’s The Chamber” and its predecessor, “Club Fetish”. In these environments both patrons and performers could be seen sporting elements of Bettie’s flavor. In addition, her films would run on a loop for all to admire. Bettie was a breath of fresh air in such a dark world. Sometimes she would be photographed holding a whip in her hand, but she was just as comfortable being tied up and getting her bottom spanked. Her modeling talents spilled over to swimsuits, many of which she designed herself and have been copied by Victoria Secrets and Katie Perry. According to the Los Angeles Times, Bettie helped usher in the sexual revolution of the 1960s. Legend, Icon, Sassy beast tamer, whatever we call this lady of print and film, her name will live on for many years to come. Even after she thought her work would fall into the cracks of obscurity, countless books, movies, comic books, fan-clubs, clothing lines, and memorabilia have been written about her; photos have been made into artwork and posters. These printings have made others financially wealthy on the good name of Bettie Page. During this time, she remained in seclusion, living a simple life, in a mobile home. You see, Bettie did not receive royalties on her own name nor image, until this tidbit of information landed on the ears of Playboy Magazine’s founder and editor Hugh Heffner. Heff, and a group of others, would ensure that Miss January 1955 got her just rewards and helped to get her name and image secure in copyright and trademarked. Upon hearing of her death at the age of 85, in 2008, Hugh Heffner put it best, “She was once retro and very modern.”

Klock Werks Pre-Sturgis Party Photography by Cameraman Chris Peck and Mailman

On Thursday, August the 2nd, 2018, in Mitchell, South Dakota, Brian Klock, owner of Klock Werks, threw one heck of a Pre-Sturgis Party downtown. The event highlighted “High Flying” Cole Freeman with a jump of a 2015 Road Glide, setting a new distance record of over 99 feet. In the audience were special iconic industry leaders, as well as VIP guests, the Hamsters. Thousands were in attendance for the local gathering that once was a local cookout at Klock Werks, as friends and guests rolled through town heading to Sturgis. From locals, to travelers passing through, the Corn Palace on Main Street was the background to one of this year’s highlighted events.

Rockabilly Rumble • Photos by: ButterDean Photography

This is the 5th year of Rockabilly Rumble at Southern Devil Harley-Davidson. Over the years, we see our scene change, and this was one of the moments best captured. We are back to centering our routines around family. We were thrilled to see 4 generations participating and enjoying the Rockabilly Rumble. From Mommy & Me, to the BMX riders, to Drift Trike Racing, Hot Rods, Motorcycles, and music by Slim and the Gems, and the Tremors, this was one heck of a good time! We want to thank everyone who rolled out for this fun event. We are already working on the 6th annual Rockabilly Rumble presented by Grease Inc. and Garage71. We want to thank all the hot rodders who came out, and a huge shout out to all the Mommies and “Little Ones” who spent the day having a blast with us. Whether dancing, playing, or just sitting back to listen to some of the best regional Rockabilly bands, it was an awesome day and a rockin’ good time!

greaseinc.com | SEPTEMBER 2018

Tell us a little on how Pearl Bottom Radio was formed About 10 years ago, I was sitting in a small town bar and a guy I went to high school with that I hadn’t seen I years who just so happened to play guitar, walked in and sat down beside me. We made small talk for a while and eventually he asked “What kind of music did I listen to?” We had pretty much all the same music taste so next thing he said was “Want to start a band?” He knew a drummer, I knew a bass player, he had played guitar since he was little, and I had books and books full of words ( I always wrote poetry, songs or whatever came in my head), so I said sure, let’s start a band. But, the band never jelled or stayed together until recently, with the lineup we’ve had for 4-5 years now. What’s the inspiration of PBR? My inspiration would be just to write good words, to tell a story or create a feeling through them. The band’s inspiration is to make good music by being ourselves and just making the music we want to make.

GREASE INC. MAGAZINE

31

What role does PBR lend to the Atlanta music scene? An all original band with good songs, some good ol’ rock and roll with some southern thrown in. We’re from the outskirts of ATL, so I do believe we all just want to kick your ass! (Musically speaking) What is your current favorite song of PBR? Why? My favorite, at the moment, is one that’s in the works of being finished called “’ain’t friends with the devil.” It’s cool, and I just dig it. One that we actually play live would be either “It is what it is” because more and more people are singing it with us now or “pretty lights” because well... it’s just different than others. The question was “What are your 3 favorite songs now?” Right? What has been so far your most memorable moment with PBR? That’s hard to say, there have been a lot. From PCB Thunder Beach, Angel City, Smoke on the Water, to a big huge older biker gentleman telling me if I didn’t get my ass on stage now he was going to hurt me bad! We ended up being friends and he shared his moonshine with me later that night.

Where do you believe the creativity comes from within PBR? It’s the band as a collective to me. Something just happens when you put us all together. We all have different taste in music and what we like and we all kinda put that together when we make music. Who have been your influences over the year? My influences all came from my dad and mom. My dad loved and always listened to music from Willie, Waylon, Conway, to Percy Sledge, and Otis Redding. My mom gave me Elvis. As I got older, it jumped from punk rock to hair metal to southern rock and Americana. I dig anything with good words. Definitely influences now would be great songwriters. Where is PBR heading next? We’re heading to Florida a few times, then (I’m the wrong person to ask this question!) hopefully back to South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee. I know we’re playing Hell on Wheels at Angel City in Oct!..How about that? We’re coming to your town, be on the lookout!
