ell Spring has sprung and the crew of Grease Inc. and Garage71 are wide open working with some amazing talent this year! We’ve already been back and forth to Florida three times, the Carolinas a few and we are back in the North Georgia Mountains on a routine basis. So what does all that mean? It means the local scene is getting ready for one heck of a great year! Locally, we enjoyed celebrating the anniversary of Southern Devil Harley-Davidson with Rock n Roll’s Hall of Fame inductee, Artimus Pyle. As we head into April, we continue to support ABATE and will be participating at their annual Swap Meet as we ramp up to Motorcycle Awareness Month in May. Then we are off running with an amazing line up for the rest of the month with Summit Racing’s Atlanta Motorama and Bikefest at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, Angel City Motorcycle Rally and then the Spring Fling Block Party at Porterdale Bar and Grill. We have already announced on-line, Silverscreen & Gasoline Retro Movie Cruise-In, located at Elliot Street Pub beginning May 19th. This is all in part of “Pursuit of the High Life” this year. We are working with some great partners this year bringing you some great twists on what we all like and live to do with riding and rolling in our rides. We look forward to all the amazing street art, live music and showcasing some of our favorite kult klassics on the big screen. Check out more on-line at www.garage71.com We want to see you capture those moments this season. Tagged in your pics this season, #iamrich and #iamkustomkulture. We will be searching for pics to provide some give-away items all season long with you showing us some great kustom kulture moments. It’s about being rich in life and in kulture that brings us all together. Let’s share that message this year...

hat does the term "Rat Rod" actually mean? What is it's origin? The coined phrase of "rat rod" derived from the reaction of completed build projects. Mainly from the era of the 30's - 50's, the focus was on a ride that are meant to be driven and not necessarily just showcased at weekend car and bike shows. Over time, the increase in these "ratty" looking rides became a central focus as many hot rodders became envious in the fact that these machines are driven and driven hard at that! This year, we thought we would even go the next level on the trend and include MC's this year. Here is a jem of a find. Hoss, the owner of this Honda CB is over 70 years old and still rides this chopper like he stole back in the 60's... It's not always about the look. It's about the ride and trip to get your destination. Roll hard this season!

Death of Kings

’ n i p p i R A. ctions u d o Pr A s I am preparing to write this article, I catch a glimpse of a Clermont Lounge sticker I have tucked in my dresser mirror, and immediately start remembering a show I saw there a couple months back. It was my buddy’s birthday party with Super X-13 and Lust. I was in the front row, which is really just a sticky floor in front of a stage barely hanging on--just the way I like it, and I noticed the drummer of this female fronted band looked just like Amos Rifkin (in a costume), and realize it IS Amos! I remember thinking, ‘is there any cool band he’s not in??’ Of course there is, but he’s got his hands in a few, regardless. Actually, the throne of one of my favorite local, metal bands, Death of Kings, is held by him. You might know him for Magoo’s Heroes, Courtesy Murder, or Spewtilators (there are more on that list!) But, something he’s building a name in now is his production company, A. Rippin Production. Amos is no stranger when it comes to the music scene. Besides him playing piano and drums at an early age, he’s also been a touring musician since he was 17. With all the pavement beating he’s done, credibility, knowledge, and a reputation By Erin RadioFox Watson

16

greaseinc.com | APRIL 2016

A. Rippin’ Productions follow naturally. For him, it’s been a good reputation that has lead to accumulating many reliable contacts all over the country. He found that working temp/corporate/warehouse jobs never paid off and more times than not, was laid off. So, after muscling through some odd end jobs from friends, and as he says, “bombing” an interview at the Masquerade to help a sweet friend, Liz Sowell, with promotions, Amos

God Damn Gallows landed the “counter-girl” spot at Memorial Tattoo on Moreland. Since then, he’s moved his way up to manager, and expresses to me that, it “allows him flexibility and stability in his business.” I asked if this has come pretty easily for him because of his history, “I’m paying my promoter dues, putting in my years, but

18

also, forming these connections were easier because of my bands; and being a musician in this industry, I know what to expect.” He also uses this genius phrase, “karma factory”, in describing his chosen path. For any band that is looking for the next generation of promoter, Amos and his team are What you need. That’s one thing that’s really awesome about this man. He’s so humble in the fact that he knows and understands that he wouldn’t be the best at what he loves to do without a strong support system. That includes, Lauryn Christy (former WRAS-Atlanta Promotions Director) who handles social media, promotions and some booking; Michael Myers (musical artist) who is basically A.R.P.’s street team; and someone who’s not on payroll but is just as crucial is “I don’t want his lady, Malia Reynolds great bands to (tattoo artist). What sets skip Atlanta this group apart from the rest? “Unless everybody anymore, I gets paid, I don’t get want people to paid”, Amos said, “I come here and want to build an honest be supported. I reputation, I want to be want to give a transparent company”. the people What you see is defisomething to nitely what you get with support.” him. I think the reason

A. Rippin’ Productions “ Unless everybody gets paid, I don’t get paid”, Amos said, “I want to build an honest reputation, I want to be a transparent company”. Green Jellÿ to trust him so much, besides his mission statement, is the fact that he loves music, any way he can get it, and he truly does care about the musicians and artists he works with. He says, it’s “not a hard job to do, but hard to do it right...there are a lot of ways to fuck it up.” But, his head and heart are in the right spot, so I don’t see that happening. He jokes and says, “show happens”! It sure does, my friend, especially with what you’re creating.

Amos cut his teeth in music around Atlanta, and he remembers when national and international acts would come through. He wants to bring that back! “I don’t want great bands to skip Atlanta anymore, I want people to come here and be supported. I want to give the people something to support.” I think I can speak for a lot of us, we want that too!! It feels so good knowing others are out there making a difference in our music community. Whether you support local, national or international, just support! And, check out history in the making with A. Rippin Production.

Fun Fact: Dwayne Jones, drummer for Order of the Owl, gave Amos the nickname that turned out to be his company name. There were more words involved, but it's "not a d**k joke", so Amos says... ;) Where To Find Them: www.arippinproduction.com, FB, and look for their calendar in this issue of upcoming shows 20

o say the owner of this shop is exactly what her company name portrays is an understatement. Misty ‘Dirty’ Reed, is not only a pretty, sweet, tattooed southern woman, but she is also a sure enough rebel...from belle!! Before she started making soaps, sundries, and curiosities, she was the owner of a motorsports apparel business, Dirty Trixx, before that...well, it doesn’t even matter, because her best work is what she’s got her hands in now. And, as Misty puts it, “you can only clock in so much before you wanna clock somebody!” I think that’s pretty true to the kind of creative person she is, she needs an outlet (and not one you can plug a lamp in to better see what you’re typing on the computer). She’s from the family of no b.s. and that’s what her products deliver, too. I met Misty about 10 years ago in the bathroom at a club in downtown Columbus, she was putting on her signature red lipstick, and I was commenting on how good it looked (like girls do), and we just hit it off from there. Although, it took me a few

32

Misty ‘Dirty’ Reed

years to catch back up with her (thanks to our mutual friend), it was like time had never passed. As soon as I walked into her store, we immediately fell back into the same rhythm of cutting up, talking about beauty products, boys, and motorcycles. She is funny, warm-hearted, and amazingly talented. The day of our interview, she came and picked me up (in her dually), we stopped for gas and then talked ourselves into walking over to the liquor store attached to the station. It was the day before my birthday, so why the heck not?! We get to her store, pop open a

34

bottle, dive into every fragrance and ingredient there was, and she starts talking about the science of mixing. I’m mostly lost when it comes to chemistry, but this is what sets her apart from so many. That, and her bible, the PDR healing encyclopedia of natural herb remedies. She says, seriously, “this isn’t crafts in my spare time, this is my passion”. A passion that came as a “total happy accident” after she began researching natural soothers for her mother and sister’s raw skin as a reaction to certain cleaning products. She became a much more attractive

Misty ‘Dirty’ Reed version of the mad scientist, and decided to create a salve with local ingredients. Her friend, a paramedic whom Misty says looked like she had Yoda’s skin, helped her find and source what would interact and react with medication, so anything that was used wouldn’t make conditions worse. Once the right things came together, she put her little concoction in a

no face-rotting.” She stated as I cracked up. She uses a minimalist approach to what she makes. The only edible product she sells has a shelf life of 7 days and must be refrigerated (edible Body Butter), and she makes sure you know that before you head home to surprise your lover. Misty stays busy since she and her son are the only ones she allows to hold

Tupperware bowl and passed it on to her family. Yoda took some home, too. A few days later, calls came in, her sister was in shock from the good it did, and Yoda didn’t look like Yoda anymore. “My main thing is eliminating all the bad stuff that you find in commercial grade products and making the best without the crap... with that said, not all organic is good, and not all chemicals are bad. If I can eat the product, so can bacteria, and I’m a fan of

the recipes. It’s not uncommon for her to sell out of a product the day it hits the shelves, like her Mechanics Soap. Pre orders are taken occasionally. My personal favorites are the Lip Balm and the Bath Bomb Cupcake, and that’s only because I haven’t tried everything else, yet ;) Ladies and gentlemen, I’m in full support of this line of skin soothers and relief! She literally has something for everyone. Give it a try... your skin life will be changed!

Carrot Cake Ingredients: 2½ cups all purpose flour 1¼ tsp baking powder 1 tsp baking soda 3 tsp ground cinnamon ½ tsp ground nutmeg ¼ tsp ground cloves ½ tsp ground ginger ½ tsp table salt 1 cup granulated sugar 1 cup light brown sugar, packed 4 large eggs, room temp 1½ cups vegetable or olive oil 1 lb carrots, peeled and grated ½ cup crushed pineapple, liquid drained and squeezed out of the fruit

Icing: 12 oz regular cream cheese, softened 6 TB salted butter, softened 4 tsp regular sour cream 1 tsp pure vanilla extract 1¾ cups confectioner’s sugar

1. Preheat oven to 350F with rack on lower middle position. Line 2 (9 in) round cake pans with parchment paper on bottom. Grease parchment paper and sides of pan. Set aside. 2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, and salt. Set aside. 3. In a stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment, beat both sugars with eggs on medium high until combined, 45 sec. Reduce to medium speed and add oil gradually. Increase to high speed and mix until light in color, 1 min. Remove bowl and using a rubber spatula, fold in the carrots and pineapple. Gently fold in dry ingredient mixture just until no flour streaks remain. 4. Scrape batter, divided evenly, into prepared cake pans. Smooth top to release air bubbles. Bake until toothpick inserted in center comes out with a few tender crumbs attached, 30-35 minutes. 5. Remove pans and cool cakes completely in pans on a wire rack (at least several hours.) 6. Meanwhile, make the frosting. In stand mixer fitted with whisk attachment, mix the softened cream cheese, butter, sour cream, and vanilla at medium high speed until combined, 30 seconds, scraping down as needed. Add confectioners’ sugar and mix until very fluffy, 1 minute. Keep chilled until ready to use. 7. Be sure cakes are completely cooled. Run thin knife around edge of cakes to loosen and invert one round cake onto serving platter. Tap back of pan to remove cake and gently peel off parchment paper. Spread half of the cream cheese frosting on top of cake. Repeat with second layer of cake, placing it gently over the top of frosting. Spread remaining frosting on top, and decorate.
