nother amazing summer has been enjoyed. Among all the negative influences that seemingly get worse in our world, our kulture seems to continue to rise above and remembers to focus on brotherhood. This month is a celebration of our kulture as we head into Labor Day. We look back at good times riding the

coastline, backyard BBQ’s with friends while listening to music, and a blend of great events including our 71 Days of Summer at the Hard Rock, Sunday Fundays at PBG, the Grand Opening of Liberty Fine Cuts in Greenville, Silverscreen & Gasoline at Elliot Street Pub, Bike Nights at Hellbender Harley-Davidson, and the Rockabilly Reckoning at B3 Bar and Grill, all while enjoying an ice cold Miller High Life. With this issue we celebrate the women who support the lifestyle and are the foundation to our family with the Girls of Summer. This is always a fun issue with a ton of great smiles and shots from fun events and shoots! We would also like to give a shout out to Hollywood Breeze, our photographer on the West Coast. Many of the pictures the last few months have been provided by her and gives us the West Coast perspective on the lifestyle. Hollywood represented Grease Inc. at the recent Whitewall Nationals in LA, California, where we will be featuring the top three ladies from Ms. Whitewall National contest. Look for them in future issues of Grease Inc. and follow our ladies at www.facebook.com/ragdoll. Our feature rides take a wicked twist this month with support by the Odd Fellas BC from Albuquerque, NM. We wanted to do something a little different this month and showcase some of the fun extra toys we like to work on just as much as our hot rod or MC’s. Thanks to “G” and all the Odd Fellas for supporting Grease Inc. and the Kustom Kulture. This is a true representation of #iamrich & #iamkustomkulture. There are still many great events heading your way this month, with the Rockabilly Rumble just around the corner!!! The return of Blacktop Rockets and the Psycho DeVilles playing together again with a Hot Rod and MC show included. Don’t forget this is one of our biggest Pin-Up contests of the season. Make sure you go to www.garage71.com/events for the details on all upcoming shows.

dd Fellas BC was formed in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2015 to continue the Brotherhood and further the Custom Cruiser Culture shared between founding members: Gilbert “G” Armendarez (car and bicycle enthusiast) of CA, Aaron “A-aron or Aaron the Artist” Gonzalez (car and bicycle enthusiast/ urban artist) of ABQ, and Billy “Billy Bueno” Veteran Urban/Custom bicycle builder of ABQ.

G and A-aron (cousins) became friends with Billy Bueno during the summer of 2013 while being introduced to the vast ABQ bicycle scene. At this time G and A-aron had previously been in the Lowrider/ Hotrod car and Lowrider bike scene. Billy Bueno, had been active for several years in the urban/stretched custom cruiser scene. Billy Bueno, founder of Duke City Cruisers in Albuquerque, arranged several rides around Albuquerque’s bike trails and hosted pub hopping events. During these events the trio collaborated and a brotherhood began over several bike builds.

In 2015, “G,” a railroad engineer by trade, was promoted and relocated to Fort Worth, TX. It was during this time that “G” formed Odd Fellas BC to continue the brotherhood shared between the trio. The idea for the name was derived from bicycles the trio were building and the personalities of the individuals that rode them. “We’re unique or ‘Odd’ while being good homies, brothers or ‘Fellas’ which formed the name ‘Odd Fellas BC’ or just ‘Odd Fellas.’,” says G. Today the trio remain friends and continue the brotherhood by getting together for bike events or rides. Odd Fellas is also know around the world for supporting the culture or movement of Custom Cruisers on Instagram @odd_fellas_bc, and on the streets where ever they’re cruising.

By Nick Skarzenski

ith the passing of another legend in the hot rodding industry, one has to wonder "who will fill these shoes?” I am here to tell you they cannot be filled. Bill Hines was a man who dreamed big dreams and made them happen. He set the standards for cool custom cars for decades. His styles will live on, but no man will be able do what he did for the industry in the future. I still remember the first time I saw him on TV; I was in my early 20's building race car parts. He was smoking his cigar and waving his magical torch while frenching in some headlights and antennas. I thought, “Since I have all this equipment I should be able to do it, no problem.” Four hours later I had successfully installed way more lead on the shop floor than I did on the car. I didn't give up, and I still haven't, I just haven't tried again yet! He made it look so easy, like most masters of the trades do. Very few people still know how to really do the deed, and I have yet to meet one of them.

Beyond the lead, he also developed his own electric/hydraulic convertible top system and was a pioneer in the hydraulic suspension game for lowering cars. Many of us aspire to be as great of a craftsman/innovator as he was, but it is doubtful any of us will succeed. Working every day into his 90s doing what he loved is how he went out. Did he really go out? It is hard to say he is gone when you walk around a local car show and spot a set of dual frenched antennas or a chopped 1950 Mercury; your mind goes to the man who invented this stuff. So Mr. Hines, hike up your suspenders, light up a cigar, and strike up a torch, because heaven needs more hotrods. Thank you for everything you have done to inspire me, as well as the rest of us here in your shadow.

Hanging with Lee Johnson of Rebel Son by Erin RadioFox Watson

32

o be honest, I wasn’t even sure this sit down would happen. I talked with Lee the day we pulled into the Smoke Out Bike Rally, after their show, and after he had a few in the hole, about sitting down with me the following day for an ‘interview’. He agreed to it, I gave him my card, and left him in the hands of his fans. The next day, I emcee’d the ‘painted lady’ contest and waited for his call to meet. Captain, Maybelle, Scott (Adams-station photographer) and I were all placing bets on if Lee remembered talking to me or if he still had my card, cause we all know he ‘likes to get drunk as a skunk, and doesn’t give a f*#k’. As the sun starts moving closer to the west, I am closer to watching my hope set like that big fireball in the sky... and then it happened...I hear my motorcycle ring tone go off, and hot damn, it was Lee mother lovin’ Johnson!! I give him our location, and with the sun at his back, comes riding up on the first motorcycle he ever owned (a 1990 Honda XR80), says, “Hi doll!” (in his charming deep south accent) picks me up, and we scoot over to the ‘short bus’, which is only about 30 feet away. The man knows how to make an entrance!! Which brings us to our first story...the Honda. It was March of 1990, his cousin, whom he was close to, had a Kawasaki and loved it. It was at that time, Lee decided he wanted a motorcycle, too. “There was a commercial advertising the Honda Cub. I asked my daddy to go look at it with me, and

S T O R I E S F R O M T H E S H O RT B U S

when we got there to see it, it looked like a girly scooter, like shit! So, I went looking around and saw the 80, took it for a ride, and said to my daddy, this is what I wanted and would work out a deal with him...if I come up with half, will you match the other half? He said yes. I washed and waxed cars and cut grass in the neighborhood for months. After school was out, I went to my grandparents house for the summer, and came back on my birthday, June 30th. Right there, in front of the house, was that Honda XR80. My daddy bought it for me for my birthday, put balloons on it and all. Now, I had a new scooter and a pocket full of cash!” I’m sure all the teenage girls were out looking for a ride and date to the ice-cream parlor after that!! I think it’s fitting that already in the first story Lee’s family was mentioned. He has an unmistakable bond with his kin, most notably his grandmother and granddaddy, Buford and Hazel Johnson. “I’d go stay with my grandparents every summer, from a kid to a teenager, in Langley, S.C., an old mill town in Aiken County. It was the coolest! After the

Civil War, during reconstruction, that area boomed with textile mills, and that’s what brought granddaddy’s family down. My grandmother’s parents ran a boarding house right around the corner from him. They met, fell in love and got married. Granddaddy was a musician in the late 40’s and 50’s, he played on local radio and T.V. stations; and then sometime in the late 50’s, he quit-cold turkey. Never played again...only picked it up to show me a few chords when I was a teenager, and by that time he had real bad arthritis, but he still showed me some things and sang. I don’t know the full story of why he quit. I do remember daddy telling me when he was a boy, he and granddaddy were sitting on the bed playing guitar, and grandmother passed by and got pissed and said, “Ain’t no son of mine gon’ learn how to pick no guitar!!” Granddaddy never saw me play and I never saw him play. He died when I was a teenager, in 1993. Grandmother died in 2014 after a series of strokes over a couple years. I always knew what I wanted to do, and when grandmother died, I

34

sold my home in Raleigh, N.C. (where we moved for daddy’s job when I was in grade school) and bought my grandparents homestead. I live in my favorite house in the whole wide world.” A song and an album that tells an even better story than this is Rebel Son’s all-acoustic album, ‘Guitar Man’. Track 14, ‘Ballad of Buford Johnson” is 12 minutes of honest, heart-felt, sad and happy story-telling. Lee told me to sit down with this album, when there’s nothing to distract me, with my night pants on, and a glass of wine in hand to really “soak in the entire feel”, and that’s what I did. I suggest you do the same, wine or whiskey! With a professional musician for an uncle, having his granddaddy’s blood, and his daddy’s curiosity, I asked about the first time he picked up a guitar. (By the way, it amazes me how precise he is on dates and times. I can barely remember...to turn this article in on time;) “It was 1987, I was 9 and in the 4th grade at Hunter Elementary School in Raleigh, N.C. I took an elective, with my parents approval, ‘Learning to play the guitar’. I could already sing and make up funny songs about stinky-ing!” He refers to his teacher, Ms. Thompson, as an “ex hippy gal and great woman.” The woman that taught him to play guitar did a wonderful service to kustom kulture. Although Lee says he just learned a couple chords, one song, “Where have all the flowers Gone”, and performed by her side in a Variety Talent show at the end of the school year, he credits his method of theory to Metallica (And Justice for All, Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning) GNR, Iron Maiden, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson. Old Country to 80’s Metal, it’s those influences that helped shape his song writing, too. The first song he ever wrote was with his current drummer, Ronnie Kirk, in their high school heavy metal band, and titled ‘Blight’. From there, Ronnie went a little further down the metal path to death, and Lee, the exact opposite with southern rock. Lee said all of Rebel Son’s songs came accidentally. “Music had turned from Country to total shit-complete garbage, so I asked myself why these songs didn’t sound like Willie or Merle...’ (because grunge hit and changed everything) to that he said, ‘F*#k radio! Anybody can make music!” Which lead to another question he asked himself, “If I were to put on and listen to a cd, what would I want it to sound like?” And thus...Rebel Son. From songs about hot rods and ugly women to beer drinking and hell raising, there’s no mistaking this band. Lee wrote a lot of their material before he asked anyone to join him, and even though he’s the sole writer, he doesn’t do “solo stuff”, he likes what a band brings to the table in making every song their own. In 1996, Rebel Son (named for Lee, his father and his father’s father all being rebels) formed, and in ‘97 is when the first line-up was made. Lee Johnson and Tommy Warwick recorded 9 albums together. After Tommy left the band to pursue family life, Lee called up Ronnie in September 2013. “We remained best friends through the years, and he

was the first person I called...Ronnie immediately agreed, even though he hadn’t picked up drums in 17 years, and fell back into it.” In March of 2006, the internet helped play a huge part in Dave Schneider joining the band. Dave’s friend answered the internet ad for him, since Dave didn’t have access and set up a place and time to meet. “Dave shows up to rehearsal with a 12 pack of beer, a bag of Bojangles biscuits and a bass, and we jammed...I asked if he had a drug problem, he said no, and I hired him right there.” This line-up is a perfect fit, just like those tight jeans on Lee. They support and play a lot of motorcycle rally’s (Daytona, Smoke Out, Suck Bang Blow in Myrtle Beach) and bars, but Lee really enjoys the more intimate settings. And speaking of intimate...I asked Lee about his personal life. The man has a nice, comfortable home, has a successful career, no kids, likes lounging on the couch and watching movies (when he’s not gigging), likes having drinks with friends. He’s settled, just not

married, nor looking to marry or date...having fun with female friends? definitely. He said he’s never married or had a family by choice. “I don’t want to grow old with a woman, because I don’t want an old woman!” Touche, hon. I don’t want to be old either, but I find the only other option is to die young. Aging gracefully for me (and who knows, maybe some fountain of youth help along the way). But, there might be hope for one lucky gal. His exact words were, “maybe one day, I’m the last in my line.” I told him he should knock some nice girl up, SOON! Lee and I had a really good, open and honest chat, because that’s the kind of man he is. This article could have been pages longer from all the stories!! He actually told me and Scott a couple things we didn’t really need to hear, but appreciated all the same. He’s genuine, a good friend, great frontman and songwriter, and we know there’s more hell to come with this one. If you aren’t familiar with Rebel Son, take an afternoon by the pool or lake, grab some beer, either download or buy hard copies of their albums, and let them show you what it means to be a southern man and musician in this day and age. You’ll relate, even if you aren’t a man!! If you’ve experienced their show before, keep it up, it’s guys like them we have to continue to support. Especially since they aren’t your cookie cutter made-for-radio, typical band. Lee has created his own Record Company, Hot Rod Hell, just to be able to do, play and say whatever he wants...just like I try to bring to the RadioFox Radio Show every Tuesday night. There’s a ton of amazing talent out there that need audiences and support, be one of them!! Watch for a huge announcement with Garage 71 Radio, Grease, Magazine, and Rebel Son this month, on my show Tuesday’s 8-10pm, through Garage71.net!!!

Bonus bit: One of Lee’s favorite songs to perform is ‘Sitting up drinking with Robert E. Lee’. The song was so well written, his teacher in his Jr. year of High School tried to prove he plagiarized. Take a listen, it might be perfect :)

othing says Summer more than a bright yellow polka dot dress and a field full of sunflowers! This year for my trip to The Anderson’s Sunflowers, I knew I wanted to wear this dress! It is the “Wendy Retro Polka Dot Dress” from Dolly & Dotty. This fifties style dress has a v neckline, fitted bodice, and a full swing circle skirt. It has gathers around the waist and at the shoulder straps. The material is very comfy and slightly stretchy as well. There is plenty of room for a petticoat, if you want, but I chose not to wear one for this shoot. If yellow isn’t your thing, this dress is available in several other colors too. The design team at Dolly & Dotty really have a love for the vintage style fashion they produce. It shows in the many styles and patterns they offer. Whether you are looking for edgier rockabilly or for a day dress, Dolly & Dotty will have something for you! They are based out of the UK, but ship worldwide. You can find them here: www.dollyanddotty.co.uk I accessorized with bangles, a necklace, and earrings from Splendette. They have the most amazing vintage inspired jewelry, as well as many other different looks to accessorize your wardrobe! Find the full collection here www.splendette.com.
