s you read this month’s issue of Grease Inc., I am excited to say, a majority of the crew is on the road traveling on Route 66 to Rockabilly on the Route in Tucumcari, NM. This is the 5th annual event supporting the Museum of Route 66 with some of the best current Rockabilly bands coast to coast. We have the priveledge of participating in the event at several levels including emceeing the entire festival, providing sound production for a large portion of the event, and Scott Adams Photography is recognized as one of the “Official Rockabilly on the Route Photographers”. Take a look inside this month for the full program of the event, including the schedule, and supporting business and event sponsors. Not only have we included the Rockabilly on the Route program in this month’s issue, we included several subtle crossover articles including: the feature T&A rides that were shot last year after Rockabilly on the Route in Tucumcari, NM. Our music feature, Kitty Rose, is a performer at Rockabilly on the Route this year. Our People and Places also shares some great memories of year’s past, when traveling out to New Mexico. The crew has been extremely busy this season. Not only are we focused on several internal projects for our readers and supporters locally, we are also heavily involved in some national events and promotions some of you may have heard. The crew at Garage71 and Grease Inc. have recently partnered up with Illconduct Stunt Team, with Cole Freeman. This is not your ordinary stunt team! Cole Freeman, also known to many as the American Dare Devil, is the 2nd

6

generation of Illconduct, a killer stunt group that has a long written history with Brian L. Whitcomb, aka Big Boy, President of Hot Pan Productions. Now the two have started to work more closely together in order to achieve some serious goals and stunts in the coming years. Trust me when I say, you will see a lot more of Illconduct in coming months in Grease Inc. June has the crew out on the road quite a bit; but when it comes to Brian “Big Boy” Whitcomb Father’s Day, the family of Garage71 and Grease Inc. will be once again located at Stone Mountain Park for a laid back day of cruise-ins, fireworks, grilling out, live music, and a ton of chrome. Come out and celebrate by spending the day with your father at Stone Mountain Park. Take advantage of the special gate fee to enter the park with Father’s Day special, so dad can enjoy a day with the family. It’s our way of saying thank you to all the great fathers who support their families. Make sure you keep up with the entire crew by going to: http://www.garage71.net/ You can also keep up with us on instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/greaseinc/ Please make sure you tag us in any of your Kustom Kulture events: @greaseinc & #garage71radio Lastly, we would like to remind you Garage71 radio broadcasts 24/7, and we are even easier to find on-line and devices by downloading the Android app or TuneIn app, keyword Garage71. Enjoy the 71 Days of Summer... We will see you on the road! Make sure you stop by and say hello and get a selfie with the crew! It’s about our kulture. It’s about a lifestyle...

Hey Grease Inc. After serving my time in the army and my deployment in Afghanistan. I moved back to the states and bought an RV and was traveling around while going to school. I traveled up to Atlanta to visit my old friend Glenn and to find some work for a bit. After a few short bullshit jobs and moving into the warehouse we are renting, myself and Glenn came up with the idea of dirt class and have been working hard to build the brand and keep living the Dirt Class lifestyle. Dirt Class, Inc. is a lifestyle company promoting the working class of America and supports those who aren’t afraid to get a little dirty. From construction workers, bikers, artists, outdoorsmen, and everything in between. Dirt Class encourages everyone to be proud of what they do and #StayDirty. Here is the current project I am working on, 86’ Sportster... Nate Anderson aka Blue Collar Nomad Dirt Class, Inc.

hile traveling, we are always looking for a story to shoot and share. The crew of Grease Inc. met an interesting couple a few years ago, while in New Mexico. The first year we Jeff and Silke, we were attracted to their roadster and we were able to strike up a conversation with them. From that point on, during each trip, we would meet up and spend some chill-time poolside while enjoying some ice cold adult libations. Here is a little bit of their story... “We were very fortunate to acquire a basket case hot rod roadster. It was primer gray and black when we got it. But, after we started sanding the body, it was discovered that there was lettering under all the primer! It turns out that the car is a survivor from the Knights of Albuquerque car club, who were members of the New Mexico Timing Association, and that the car had been off the road since 1958. The upholstery that it has today, is still the upholstery from that same period of time. We had such a blast rebuilding the roadster to what it is today, that we hunted down another project. That project was another basket case... the 5 window coupe, now called MissDemeanor. With the help of more beer and whiskey, we were able to complete a pair. Even more fun is driving them on a regular basis, and making new friends along the way. Both cars are roadworthy, and have logged many highway miles to events near and far.” Our Kulture is amazing. What is routinely worlds apart from not knowing each other, the common bond that brings us together are rods, motorcycles, and music. We always have a great time catching up with Jeff and Silke, and it was an awesome sight, after wrapping up the photo shoot, to see these two roll out of town, as the sun was setting, cruising side by side. This is what it’s about. Lifestyle. Kulture. Ink & Oil.

ot on the release of her brand new single, “Gotta Wind Down!”, she’s ready to take the band out west to Tucumcari, NM for the fifth and final Rockabilly On the Route! She’s toured all across the US, performed at the Ryman, got global attention with her “Greatest Hits” album, and has now seen herself move from her country roots to the realm of rockabilly. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Kitty Rose and the band to discuss life, liberty, and the pursuit of Carl Perkins and Axl Rose.

By Rev. Andy Photos by Scott Adams

greaseinc.com | JUNE 2017

Reverend Andy: So you guys have a big show coming up in Tucumcari, NM. It’s called Rockabilly On The Route and it’s the last one. I hear you guys will be playing every day of the event. Kitty Rose: When I spoke with Simon [organizer of the event] I told him the band would be out there a day early. He then asked if we could perform that night and we said yes we will! We’re happy to play as much as we can and this event looks like it’s going to be so much fun. Will the band be traveling together or in multiple cars in a caravan? Yvonne Boyd: Yes, we’re getting a van and all riding together there and back. Andy: So tell me a bit more about your previous releases. You have a Ryman album and a greatest hits album out there. Kitty: Kitty Rose came out in California and got into country music. My first album was the “Greatest Hits” album, I figured why not put that out there! Thing is, it really took off. I got to tour around the United States, to this day I’m still played in Australia and The Netherlands. My follow up to that was “Live At The Ryman” the CD it said “Recorded April 1st 1972” and nobody ever caught on. During interviews I was asked how it was playing the Ryman and I had big time deejays calling me asking, “Should I know who you are?” Reverend Andy: Since the band is so new, what experiences have you had? Kitty: We get people asking if we’re going to play original rockabilly… David Olson: Some places you go to, they only want to hear covers. They want to hear something familiar so they can sit and enjoy their beer after a long week. Matt The Crawfish: They want to hear stuff like “Train Kept A Rollin’”, but we’re nearly 100% originals. Kitty: There’s all these great bands that do so much with the roots rockabilly music and expand into psychobilly, neo, and more. Yvonne: We’re inspired by the original traditional

22

greaseinc.com | JUNE 2017

sound, but we want to do our own thing while paying homage the bands that came before us. Matt: The sound can’t stay frozen in amber, it has to evolve and pick up some of the influences around it, which is how it came about in the first place. This music is alive it’s not a dead art. David: There’s so much great stuff, especially coming out of Asia. Japan, Taiwan, they have a ton of great bands creating great music and expanding the genre. I recommend checking out Trix O’ Treat from Taiwan. The lead singer is this little 4’9” fireball and she’s amazing. Reverend Andy: We were discussing before the interview cars and bikes and I understand you ladies ride on two wheels. Yvonne: Yes! And we rode to Sturgis together last year. It was the 75th anniversary, so we had to do it. Kitty: We passed so many Harleys up on trailers and here we are making the trek from Atlanta to the Dakotas! I’m sorry, but I have to say I hate Nebraska! Sorry Nebraska, there was nothing good there for us during the trip. Matt: If there’s a state you should do 100mph all the way through, it would be Nebraska. It just goes on and on without an end in sight. Andy: David, you have a really great Carl Perkins story that I love and I’d like for you to tell it one more time. David: (chuckles) I had my picture taken with Carl Perkins in 1990. He had played at The Cavern Club in the Buckhead area of town. While my friends and I were waiting for everything to start we see Carl outside the club, probably leaving his sound check. I told the people I was with that I was going back to my truck to get a book from the Carl Perkins box set to see if he’ll sign it for me.

24

greaseinc.com | JUNE 2017

As I was coming back to the venue I see my friends standing outside with Carl Perkins. What I didn’t know until later is that they had asked him to wait for me so I could meet him. So, I came around the corner and Carl is talking to my girlfriend and I just about fell over because there he is waiting! I remember he was almost a head taller than me and I’m 6’. I couldn’t talk and managed to squeak out, “You’re the greatest rockabilly ever.” He signed my book, and we were going to have a picture taken – Carl wrapped his arm around the back of my shoulder and we stood there like best buds for this. He said to me, “Cat,” and he actually said that. “Cat, I gotta get back on my bus.” I began to turn away and he said, “Wait a minute, Cat.” And he reached into his pocket and pulled out a handful of change and I thought, is Carl Perkins about to give me a quarter? He pulls out this light blue guitar pick, handed it to me, and said, “My name’s a bit faded on it, but I played Blue Suede Shoes with this one.” I nearly passed out. He was everything I could have hoped for, imagined, and even more than that. Reverend Andy: Give me a fun or odd moment in your musical career. Kitty Rose: I come out of the Hollywood area – late 80’s to early 90’s, and I was actually singing demos for Guns ‘N’ Roses. Yes. That band. They would come to my shows and I would never talk to them. They would come to my acoustic solo performances, and I would think, “Okay, they’re here. They’re here. Uhhh.” It’s awful! They came to see me, but I never hung out with them even though I was doing all this work for the band. You can get more information, find tour dates, and purchase music from the band by visiting their website. Catch them at this year’s Rockabilly On The Route! www.rockabillykittyrose.com Matt The Crawfish (tenor sax) YV (drums) Kitty Rose (bass & vocals) David "O" Olson (guitars)

A couple of years ago I came across the most amazing dress maker, Stefania Agoston. Her company is TiCCi Rockabilly and it’s based out of Budapest, Hungary. Her designs are all so unique! She can custom make Rockabilly, Wedding, Pinup, Maternity, and Men’s clothing, as well. I have been over the moon with each dress I have received. This particular dress is definitely one of my all time favorites. It was made to wear to Nashville Boogie this year. It’s a perfect Rockabilly and Western theme. I love how the soft denim flows with the printed fabric down the middle and trims the pockets. The cactus print is accompanied with boots, hats, lassos, and peppers making it a very fun dress! The straps are like elastic suspenders with buttons to keep them fastened. I thought that was a very cool touch! Since these dresses are custom made, it’s very important to get your correct measurements for that perfect fit. This dress has a fitted bodice with a back zipper and huge, full circle skirt with plenty of room to add a petticoat if you would like. It’s probably going to be a tough choice once you see how many options there are for you at TiCCi Rockabilly. You can order TiCCi dresses online at ticci.tu, or they also have Etsy shop. You may be wondering why the CC’s are capitol. It’s because Stefania is a huge fan of Coco Chanel and she felt that the presence of the C in her company name would give her strength. I think it certainly has; her clothing is remarkable! I recommend treating yourself to a special dress when the time comes. You will be glad you did! My accessories for this look are wooden bangles and earrings from Splendette. They are from the Tropicales Collection, but I liked the way they looked with this dress! The hair flower is a double orchid in blue from Shazam Vintage Pin Up Hair Flowers. I don’t get to wear boots with my dresses very often; so, when the opportunity comes up, I take it! These are a slouchy, western style that I actually found at Target. It’s a fun, comfortable look for a change! The possibilities are endless when it comes to styling with a novelty print dress. Just remember to have fun and put your own twist and personality into it! XO- Buttercream Bettie.

WELCOME TO THE 5TH AND FINAL ROCKABILLY ON THE ROUTE!

B

efore sitting down to write this letter, we took a moment to log into Instagram and search #RockabillyOnTheRoute where we were met with a whopping 1,490 photos posted by us, our performers, and our guests, spanning the last 4 years. It was a joyous and emotional walk down memory lane. We were flooded with memories of friendships, priceless moments, and the extraordinary talent that has walked across the Rockabilly on the Route stage. So many hands and hearts have gone into making each year memorable in its own way, not to mention the many unforeseen fires that were being put out behind the scenes that when it was all said and done only added to the legacy of the festival – the memoir we may someday write. There was year one, when our friends came together to build a stage from scratch right there in the Convention Center Ballroom just hours before Wanda Jackson was due to grace it. And then of course the incredible honor of meeting the Rockabilly Queen herself and hearing her personally congratulate us on the festival and encourage us to keep going. There was the infamous year when nine tornadoes touched down all around Tucumcari the night of our headlining show and an apocalyptic hailstorm nearly shut us down, but didn’t. That was the same year that two members of the Norwegian band The Lucky Bullets flew into Albuquerque, were transported to Tucumcari, played their set and then flew home, all for the opportunity to play on Route 66. Meanwhile the other two band members enjoyed a long stay in town with only the clothes on their backs as the airline had lost their luggage. We took them sightseeing and shooting at John Mihm’s ranch. Yet another year someone called in a bomb threat and Stray Cat Lee Rocker and his band were trapped in their hotel room and we had to pull strings to cross police lines and escort them out and to the venue in time for their set. Then of course there were the first three years when we were able to have the notorious burn-out event in which a cloud of tire smoke could be seen from one end of town to the other. And then there were the over 100 bands that have graced our stage. Music legends such as Wanda Jackson, Lee Rocker, and Wayne Hancock, as well as national and international talents from around the U.S., Japan, Colombia, Norway, Canada and beyond have brought the cream of the crop to this little town in the desert, year after year. There have been impromptu jam sessions amongst some of the best-known names in the industry, innumerable wild nights at the Tri-Star, and enough stories to fill a book.

GREASE INC. MAGAZINE

Rockabilly on the Route is also where lifelong friendships and a few romances have begun. This year we are dedicating the festival to our dear friend City Commissioner John Mihm, who passed away last year. He was affectionately known by us as “The Commish,” and was a true friend and supporter to the festival. He will be deeply missed and our time with him will be forever cherished. Now, without further ado, we invite you to make all the memories, have all the fun, #YOLO like it’s going out of style, and join us in making 2017 the most memorable year of them all! Thank you for joining us on this journey, we couldn’t have done it without you.

ELKS LODGE T SERVING PEOPLE AND COMMUNITIES

he Tucumcari Elks Lodge #1172, located at 2118 South Adams St., is a large, unassuming building, but within its doors is not only a time capsule of beautifully preserved mid-century décor, but a world where neighbors come together, families share meals, and children grow up. Elks invest in their communities through important programs that help children grow up to be healthy and drug-free. They undertake projects that address unmet needs and honor the service and sacrifice of our veterans. The Benevolent and protective Order of Elks of the United States of America serves people and communities through benevolent programs, demonstrating that Elks care and Elks Share. The mission of the Elks is to inculcate the following principles: • Charity • Justice • Brotherly love • Fidelity • Recognize a belief in God • P romote the welfare and enhance the happiness of its members • Quicken the spirit of American patriotism • Cultivate good fellowship • Perpetuate itself as a fraternal organization • Provide for its government Elks spends more than $80,000,000 every year on benevolent, educational, and patriotic community-minded programs in fields such as benefitting physically handicapped children, sponsoring Elks National Foundation scholarships, scouting, athletic teams, veterans’ works, a national “Hoop Shoot” freethrow contest involving more than 3 million children, and physical and occupational therapy programs. Additionally, the youth of our country have always been important to the order. It is for this reason the Elks Drug Awareness program was launched to warn primary grad students and their parents of the dangers of drug use. Further, every lodge observes June 14, Flag Day, as a tradition that the Elks began in 1907 and was later adopted by the Congress as an official observance. This year the Tucumcari Elks Lodge #1172 is proud to be a sponsor of the Fourth Annual Rockabilly on the Route! We welcome all Elks members to visit our beautiful club, which is home to swimming pool, 8 RV hook ups, a game room, lounge, and dinning room with hamburger night every Thursday.
