LETTER

I

t is always interesting how every month, I take the time to write what influences either myself personally, or through the eyes of our many voices with Garage71 radio and Grease Inc. Last month, I decided to “take the gloves off”. In today’s routine, it is about being PC. We choose to be politically correct, not because we don’t want to offend anyone; we do it because we do our very best to stay neutral when it comes to people’s opinions of what is “the best ride”, or brands, etc. We get all of that. Heck, if you ask me personally who I prefer to ride with, it’s with people who actually ride or enjoy what we all say we do when it comes to our kulture, which brings me to this month’s point. While enjoying another trip out west, we all came to the same conclusion, similar to what was said last month. We all have to stay involved, or this “lifestyle” will die off. I was so excited after our last trip. We got to hang out with some of the most influential people and builders in the New Mexico scene. They take the style of Street Rod to a whole new level of bad ass. Not

one owner or builder had an attitude, other than they want the koolest ride on the street. The topic that did resonate during the trip is how are we going to capture the upcoming generations to care as much about this lifestyle as we do? Last month, I called out the assholes hiding behind their cars, being rude, and just being jerks for no reason when it comes to “car shows”. This is not going to get anyone, let alone a kid at any level, interested in kool cars or motorcycles. We have to get them involved now! Or when that “will” is presented after your butt is 6 feet under, your “ideal” car or ride will just become scrap metal and sold at auction on the cheap. All so they can go and get the next disposable 2018 whatever it is off the showroom floor. Also, by doing just this, we continue to give all these major manufacturers exactly what they need to get our rides off the road forever. It is real. If you don’t believe me, just go by your closest junkyard and ask those fellows; they will give you a much better insight of how the industry is evolving. So, what do we do? Good question. When was the last time you took your better half out for a date night in your ride? When was the last time you ripped the rubber off the back tires with your kid strapped down and along for the ride? Oh no, did we just say something dangerous? Heck yes we did! Give me a break! If you think laying a little amount of tread is unsafe, it’s only unsafe

6

if you’re drunk as a skunk and don’t give a f@&C! It is exciting! It is fun to ride bicycles fast. It is fun to ride skateboards. Of course, you are eventually going to get a bruise or ten, but you learn. You learn to be better at what it is, or you eventually learn your limitations, but without judgement other than a scrape or two. We have to get our kids to see the fun side of what we do and why we do it. We have to continue to show them manners. We have to continue to involve them in things that may, or may not, at first seem important today, but will make sense in years to come. Which of our kids know how to dance? I don’t mean just bouncing up and down at a rave and flinging our arms. I mean dance! Do you see anyone on a dance floor not in a good mood, even if they are not “good” at dancing, no one! Again, it teaches us so much, including having fun. So, why not get dance lessons this winter instead of staying so cooped up and becoming a couch potato? Then, by next spring, when you are at the next event to kick things off, you are one of the movers and shakers to get the party started all over again! We all say when we see our elders throwing down, “I hope we are like that at their age”. So, do it! I have been re-inspired, as I often do, when left on my own hitting the lost highways of America. There is so much out there we have to offer and remember, we just have to do it. That ride, whatever it is, only wants to be driven or ridden wherever it is you want to go. So, I will continue to say to everyone that I come across, you want this lifestyle to come to life, then you, yourself, needs to come back to life! You, and only you, will make a moment special. Let’s keep our lifestyle and kulture one of those things other see as special. Get inspired. Get involved.

The Tale of El’ Diablo

L

egend tells of a car built by the Devil. A car so badass, mere mortals turn to wisps of sulfur smoke just by laying eyes on it. A chopped top 1950 Mercury appropriately dubbed, “El Diablo,” undefeated against angels and mortals alike. Satan’s servants say El Diablo is as fearsome as the Devi himself, it drives in the heat of hell. Intrigued by the infamous lore alongside the prospect of driving hells hot rod, Chris Saint Clark set out to beat the Devil in a race for possession of hells vessel. Upon defeat, he would lose his soul to the depths of Hades forever. Satan’s towncar was just too much to resist, so with a drop of blood the deal was sealed and off they went. An unfair start by the Devil left Chris eating fire dust. Peering through burnt eyes, Chris was behind, but not out. Slowly, he gained on the fire and brimstone pace, finally gaining on Lucifer’s hooves. Suddenly, the Devil circled around in a fiery pit, tempting Chris to drive through it with the promise of victory. The Devil’s evil, at best, only knew reluctance. However, that day Chris exerted angelic strength. Without hesitation, Saint Clark went head long through the burning pit with such a whirlwind the fires were extinguished. Old Beelzebub shook in the alarming wake of defeat. El Diablo now belonged to a mortal. A mortal of immense character, strength and the grit to ride out of hell in the Devil’s ride...El Diablo.

eet Bettie Butcher, the “Hostess with the mostest”, teacher, pageant producer, event manager and mentor. Bettie is known as one of the pioneer pinup and tattoo models in Australia, with ink by national and international artists. Her trademarks are her curvy VAVAVOOM figure, versatile style, bubbly persona and her love of working on her classic VW Beetle “Evelyn”. Bettie grew up as a bit of a tomboy working on cars with her brother and father. Girly things were never something she was interested in and she left school early due to never fitting in and wanting to get into the workforce. Bettie never considered modelling and hated being photographed, but this all changed in 2005 at a rockabilly car show when after a couple of drinks, she was photographed with a pickup truck. This photo was later published in national magazines and nothing has held her back since. Bettie has been heavily involved in the pinup and rockabilly scene since 2005 and has established a name not only in Australia but Internationally.

Bettie really hit the spotlight when she was crowned 1st place winner of the National Deadbeat Pinup Pageant at The Sydney Tattoo and Body Art Expo 2010 (judged by Sabina Kelley) and 1st place winner of National Miss Ink Australia 2010. This has also secured Bettie a position as a regular model for the fashion shows at various Tattoo Expos, Pinup events, Fashion launches and more. Winning the title of Miss Pinup and Miss Ink Australia gave Bettie the exposure she needed to become a household name in the pinup and tattoo culture in Australia. This helped expanded her modelling career into regular trips around Australia and to the USA, where Bettie was lucky enough to work with some of LA’s finest, Shannon Brooke Imagery, Mitzi and Co, Vestige Photography and AmaLea Pictures. These days you will find Bettie on stage hosting a variety of Australian tattoo, car and rockabilly events. With over seven years’ experience on stage she has earned the title of Australia’s premier hostess and pinup pageant producer, working on Australian pinup and tattoo events including Miss Motor Show, Miss Extreme Ink, Miss Dirty Love, Miss Surf n’ Ink and Miss Rods and Rockabilly to name a few. ugust 24, 2017, marks 13 years Rev. Andy has been doing his radio show, Psychobilly Freakout. “I had been a deejay at Album 88 for a year or so and tested out a rockabilly show earlier in the year. It went great, was well received, so I proposed creating a new weekly show. We had just lost a couple of mainstay programs and Monday night opened up. I was offered the slot and was told I needed to make sure it didn’t sound like our country show - Cowtipper’s Delight. I offered up two names for the show, since I wasn’t creative with it I suggested Rockabilly Rebel (song by Hillbilly Hellcats) and Psychobilly Freakout (RHH). We all know which name was accepted - the Program Director felt Rockabilly Rebel sounded “too country.” Over the years, I got to meet and interview some amazing musicians. Robert Gordon, Wanda Jackson, Jime Heath, Big Sandy, ‘Pistol’ Pete, and so many more. I also offered a local outlet for the Atlanta “Redneck Underground.” Bands such as The Blacktop Rockets, Truckadelic, Hi Test, Sonoramic Commando, Caroline & The Ramblers, and others were on the local airwaves. At times, I felt like I was in a tornado made of music and got swept up in all the fun! Eventually, I graduated from GSU and when that happens you can no longer be a DJ. I ended my stint at 88 with a 12 hour shift on a Monday night and gave my final shout of “AMF” that night at 10pm. I walked out feeling like I had made a difference for the music scene in Atlanta, but sad because I had to leave my “fraternity.” A couple of years later, I joined a show on WREK called Longboards and Longhorns. It didn’t feel right because my co-host urged us to play less rockabilly and more surf. He felt that lyrics got in the way. After a while, I left and didn’t look back. In July 2009, Brian Whitcomb met with me over drinks to discuss joining an online radio station he was starting. It sounded promising and I’d get to get my show going again. We started in his house, moved to a small office, then finally took over a building in Tannery Row. ALong the way, we added a magazine allowing me to write and put some of my interviews into written word. I think part of me would break if I didn’t get to spin music. Whether I have 2 or 2,000 tuning in, I enjoy sharing this music with others. A documentary is being put together about me, my love of music, and some of the adventures I’ve had along the way. I’m really excited to share more of what I’ve experienced over the last 13 years and can’t wait to get your reactions! Thanks for reading, thanks for tuning in the radio show, and for me it is martini time! Adios, my friends!”

H

onestly, I can't remember how it all started. I just remember that we were all coming off of breakups from our previous bands in 2003. I had known Dennis "DJ" Dolan and Capers Ogletree for some time who would become the bass player and drummer for the Screamin Demons. They'd both spent time playing in Flathead Mike and the Mercurys, and they actually used to practice in my basement. Lots of bands practiced there; The Heathens, Flathead Mike, The Gettin' Headstones, and a couple of others along the way. Brent Cashman was the lead singer and guitar player for The Cashmen, but we didn't actually meet until the first practice. I think it was at the Majestic diner where Capers was a cook, that he first asked me about it forming a band. I remember sitting at the counter while he was cooking and he began throwing out all of these band names at me. They all sounded like "swing bands". I can't actually recall any of them though. I thought if we were going to play psychobilly, it needed to sound a little meaner. All of the guys make Photography by Scott Adams

fun of me to this day, because that's a term that I constantly use when practicing songs, "Can you make it sound meaner." If you want to know the truth... the name of the band is actually pulled from the nickname of the 7th Fighter Squadron of the US Air Force. You should look them up. Their logo is a Bunyap, an Australian aboriginal death demon. Come on! What sounds meaner than that?! I like to joke that it came from the lyrics of Bell Biv DeVoe's Poison, but no. Sigh... That would be awesome though. You're probably going to go look that up now. When we first started, we didn't have any songs. So we pulled from our old band's catalogs, a few covers, and I had a couple of songs that I'd been working on. A lot of our songs are based on experiences of love gone wrong. Sometimes it's love that's gone way too wrong. I think I must have been in a dark place when I wrote some of them. I love a good story. So, I try and paint that lyrically. Mostly, I'd come to practice with something scratched out. Kind of the basics. Then Brent would add his magic. He'd also tell me that some of my chords weren't actually chords, but it worked out. I think our tastes are all over the place. So, we pull influences from various artists. Even though our songs may sound simple at times, if you listen, there's a lot of texture. Lots of builds and breaks and tempo changes. You can hear some Cramps, Guana Batz, Batmobile, and some Stray Cats influences in there for sure, but you'll also hear some Tom Waits, Red Sovine and some Sham 69. (Maybe some Air Supply too, but don't tell the other guys.) Looking back, it was a lot of fun. Psychobilly has never been as big over here as in Europe, but we got to play with some amazing people. Often we became the go to band for other psychobilly bands to contact when traveling the east coast. It was pretty awesome. I remember walking off stage at the Echo Lounge from playing with Nekromantix, and we were instantly approached about playing on the Atlanta date for Punks vs Psychos the next day. Total Chaos, Demented Are Go, Koffin Kats, 12 Step Rebels, Tiger Army, Nekromantix, The Lonesome

36

Kings, The Tombstones... man, we got to play with some great bands, and in some weird places. Once we played at the infamous Clermont Lounge with a fiddle player on St. Patty's day that was added to the mix. I remember all of the dancers wearing our t-shirts. Once we got booked at an all black comedy club in Birmingham in the middle of a snow storm. We also got to play in the basement of the Rock-n-bowl in New Orleans at 4am. Not every place was glamorous, but they were good times. It was after a weekend of playing in Nashville and Memphis in 2004 that Capers left us, and that's when Brent called Tony Dinneweth of Rocket 350, Sash the Bash, Casket Creatures and 1,000,000 other bands to join us. I think he'd just moved back to town from touring with Sixer. It was awesome. He jumped in, and it was like we never lost a step.

I think he'd only had two or three practices with us before we played with 3 Bad Jacks. I thought it was going to be a train wreck, but no. He was awesome. That's when I started joking that he was my Eric Carr (2nd drummer for Kiss). It's funny, we never really broke up. It just kind of stopped in 2006. Brent was talking about that recently at Tony's funeral who just passed away this past August. It's like we had this three years of momentum and then it just naturally stopped. I guess that happens sometimes. It was a Pogues show in 2009 that Brent walked up to me and asked if I'd be interested in playing a reunion show. I think that was the first time that he and I had actually seen each other in a couple of years. It was pretty awesome. We played a one off show at the Star Bar with Atomic Rockets. So much fun. That was the last time we played with the original line up. I think Capers moved to Portland not long after that. A few more years went by and Brent called again about playing. This time it was at a warehouse with a halfpipe, stilt walkers, fire breathers, and other circus performers. It was awesome. That was two years ago. Last year we played the Clermont Lounge. Both shows were with Tony. I think at this point, the three of us love playing together, but for Screamin' Demons it'll be an every once in a while kind of thing. We had our moment, but now... instead of playing show after show after show... we'll just play some interesting places. For instance, we'll be playing The Highlander on October 14th. It'll be old school. Just stripped down. No stage. Just floor, amps and loud. I think we're talking about doing another warehouse circus show in the future. These are fun. No expectations. Just rock'n roll and weird experiences.

all is upon us and it’s one of the greatest times of the year! The cool air feels amazing and the leaves turn gorgeous shades of red, yellow, and orange. Pumpkin spice coffee is available everywhere, and of course my favorite, Halloween! It’s so fun being able to dress up and show a different side of your style. I personally like to dress for different seasons, otherwise I would probably wear novelty Halloween prints everyday! This particular skirt is one of them! It’s a custom made item from Lolipopshop. I chose the skulls and roses. At this shop you will find many styles to choose from and you pick the print you want from their great selection. They offer several skit styles, dresses, men’s, and children’s clothing as well. The quality is exceptional and handmade in Poland! Each item is inspired from vintage clothing ranging in time from the 40’s to the 90’s. There is an easy size guide to follow when you order, or if you need help an email or message will be answered. I normally wear a swing style skirt, but I’m happy to have this curve hugging pencil style in my wardrobe! I’m sure you’ll be happy with a custom piece from Lolipopshop too!

I am wearing the Tulip Top from Blueberryhillfashions. com. It’s the perfect addition to any skirt! It’s very fitted, so it goes right into the skirt with no bulges of material hanging over. It is stretchy and has a beautiful scallop neckline. It is available in black, white, and red. I hope you like my green hair! I have accessorized it with a gorgeous creepy veiled fascinator from Deviously Sweet Designs. It features a black and white base with a black veil that is decorated with red roses and a black glitter spider. It’s perfect! You can find Deviously Sweet Designs on Etsy. The brooch is a handmade piece from Atomic Lucite out of Raisville, Alabama. Her shop is on Etsy as well, and you will find hundreds of adorable accessories for all of your needs! I had to have this Bride and Frankenstein piece. Have fun with your Halloween clothing hunt!
