“Why should I study at the MET?” Courses designed by industry leaders Our courses are designed in collaboration with local employers and industry experts to ensure that our curriculum is at the cutting edge.

A focus on your future

Your study programme will be tailored to your individual educational needs. The College has fantastic links with local employers and our dedicated careers and employability team can help you plan for the future.

6

Inspiring teaching from expert staff Our staff are dedicated, passionate and experts in their field.

Specialist facilities Our facilities are unmatched in the local area, including: An on-site theatre surrounded by dance studios and production workshops, and state-of-the-art music and rehearsal studios. Specialist workshops and studios for a range of creative practices. Industry-standard workshops and facilities for construction and engineering courses. Professionally equipped salons, allowing hairdressing and beauty students to offer treatments to the public. Working restaurant, open to the public and run by hospitality and catering students.

A supportive and enriching atmosphere Starting college can be a little daunting; this is why creating a supportive environment is at the heart of what we do. 7

Meet our Student Governor Q&A with Robert (Student Governor and Student Executive Rep) Robert is currently in his second year at Northbrook MET, studying the UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Acting. We caught up with him to have a chat about what student life at the MET is really like, and what his responsibilities are as Student Governor and an Executive Student Rep. What is a student rep and what can you get involved in? As a student rep I represent my class, bringing issues to student rep meetings, giving a voice to the students on things that are important to us. As a student executive and student governor it’s my responsibility to take the ideas from these meetings and implement the changes. I’ve attended meetings with the CEO, Principal and Board of Governors to talk about issues that me and my classmates care about. What sort of issues do the student reps work on? I can talk about any issues that my classmates bring forward. Recently we worked together to make our canteen more environmentally friendly by getting the College to switch to recyclable cutlery. Issues like sustainability and climate change are really important to the student community at the MET. More recently we worked on videos that helped explain the importance of COVID-19 safety measures across our campuses.

8

Would you recommend becoming a student rep to our new learners? Being a student rep has been a great way to meet new people, learn skills and become part of the college community. I feel as if I’ve been able to enact positive change and do something to help over in what has been a difficult year. Why did you choose to study at the MET? When I first came to the MET I was astounded to see the facilities, especially the theatre at the West Durrington Campus. It was so professional and what I would expect at industry level. What do you enjoy most about your course? The teaching is excellent. They have managed to create a learning environment which is nurturing and supportive, but also fosters your independence. I am really looking forward to progressing to my Level 4 course at the MET next academic year. What is student life like at the MET? The MET is a creative, communal and friendly place to be. We’ve recently set up a debating society where we discuss political and social issues and we’ve been working collaboratively on our end-ofyear shows, which are the culmination of everyone’s hard work this year.

Student life Enrichment activities There are lots of free activities and initiatives for you to get involved with. These range from sports activities to debating societies. These are excellent opportunities to make new friends, help other students and boost your CV.

The college experience doesn’t stop when you leave the classroom. You will also have the opportunity to be involved with a wide range of enrichment activities, have your voice heard on the Student Council and make the most of all the facilities the campus has to offer.

Student Voice Join our Student Council and represent your fellow students’ views on college issues. There are also opportunities to meet with the Principal so you can influence college decisions at the highest level.

Learning Resource Centre Our Learning Resource Centres (LRC) are at the heart of college life and provide access to an extensive collection of books, periodicals and online resources. The LRC is fully stocked with computers, Microsoft Office and other specialist software.

Live Performances and shows The Northbrook Theatre stages over 30 student shows a year, ranging from innovative drama and dance, to exciting musicals and rock concerts. At the end of each year students collaborate on a three-week creative arts festival held at the College. We also have our own student run radio station.

Food and drink Our campuses have a variety of food and drink options at fantastic prices, including a canteen on each campus serving a mixture of hot and cold options. Our West Durrington campus also has a coffee shop staffed by our catering students. 99

Here to support you Our friendly student support teams are available to help you in all sorts of ways. They will work with you to ensure that you are able to enjoy your studies, succeed on your study programme and move into further study or employment.

Dedicated support services You’ll have the opportunity to take part in group tutorial sessions focusing on your personal development, alongside one-to-one support with trained staff. We have increased support in place for students who are Looked After and those who have left care, as well as young refugees and asylum seekers, with their transition to and journey through the college.

Counselling Our counselling team provide a safe and confidential service for you to explore personal and emotional issues if things become difficult to handle.

Additional learning support If you need extra help with your studies, we will help you to identify your needs and provide support so you are not disadvantaged; for example, working with a Learning Support Assistant (LSA) in class, Communication Support Workers (CSW) for Deaf students or dyslexia support.

Disability support We actively encourage and support students with disabilities or learning difficulties. Please talk to us about your support needs as soon as possible so we can provide any reasonable adjustments to help you study and achieve on your course. These might include use of specialist software and equipment, in-class support from a LSA, one-to-one support with study skills or access to our support drop-in sessions. 10

To find out if you may need additional learning support, we will give you a range of tasks to check your English and maths levels. You do not necessarily need an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) or other evidence of disability to use our support services.

Student Services team Our Student Services team can also provide information and advice about: Courses and how to apply for them Financial support Travel, health and money How to access support services both inside and outside of college

Safeguarding Our safeguarding team includes Welfare Advisers who provide support for students, liaising with and making referrals to external agencies where required. We have the strongest commitment to making sure our students experience a secure, safe and welcoming environment. We help each individual student fulfil their potential by having robust policies and procedures in place to safeguard young people and vulnerable adults. These include anti-bullying, e-safety, and health and safety. We have clear ways to recognise and refer any issues of concern and we take all reasonable steps to minimise risk. We are also committed to developing our students’ ability to keep themselves safe. We do this by raising their awareness and assisting them to make informed decisions relating to current issues. Our tutorial programme also includes Prevent, British values, and equality and diversity.

Putting your mental health first We work hard to make sure our students are given the support they need to succeed throughout their course. Mental wellbeing is an essential component of our health and has become increasingly important following the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. We are proud to announce that we have signed up to the Association of Colleges’ (AoC) Mental Health and Wellbeing Charter. We recognise that our college has a responsibility to create an environment that promotes student wellbeing.

The Mental Health Charter includes steps the College will take to ensure we are proactively supporting your mental health. These include:

1

Creating an open and inclusive college, which respects those with mental ill health.

2

Promoting equality of opportunity and challenging mental health stigma, and promoting wellbeing through tutorial programmes.

3

4 5

Encouraging and collecting student views on mental health and wellbeing by working with the Students’ Union and other student representative bodies. Providing targeted individual mental health support where appropriate and signposting to external support services where appropriate. Establishing effective links with local health and voluntary sector mental health groups.

welcome You are

College should be a supportive and caring environment. At the MET we believe in equality of opportunity and we strive to create a place where everyone feels safe and welcome.

Meet our Equality and Diversity Student Officer, Luke. What is your role as the Equality and Diversity Student Officer? My job is to advocate for minority and under represented students across the College, bringing issues that are important to them to the Student Rep meetings, and also to the Equality and Diversity meetings with college staff. I work closely with the Student Experience team to continue to create an inclusive and enriching environment on campus. My advocacy focuses on LGBTQ+ issues, alongside advocating for BAME and Disabled students. How would you describe student life at the MET? The MET is a great place to meet new people, especially with the same interests. I’m passionate about widening my world view and it’s great to meet so many people from other courses, including the higher education courses which are also taught on the college site. I’ve been able to draw on my own experiences as part of the LGBTQ+ community in my artistic practice and produce artwork inspired by this for my Final Major Project.

Luke

LGBTQ+ support group Our LGBTQ+ group meets once a week at our Central Brighton Campus and offers a safe space for discussion and expression. It’s a place for sharing personal stories and wisdom, where all experiences are listened to and valid. Here’s what our students say about being part of the group:

We support each other through issues and use a question box to prompt discussion about topics affecting our community, for example, mental health and sexual health. It’s a group where everyone is believed. A place to be yourself and make friendships. A really supportive group, together in solidarity and courage.

A space to be myself completely. I don’t have to hold back.

A day in the life What is it like to be a college student? What is a typical day at the MET? How many lessons will you have and how do you spend your time?

12.00pm

Lunchtime. I meet some friends in the canteen. I choose a sandwich, but there are also salads and hot food on offer.

12.30pm

I am trying out all the student enrichment activities. This week I have decided to go along to yoga.

1.15pm

8.30am 10.30am

We have a quick break before continuing with our lesson. I pop to the LRC to return a book I borrowed and see if there are any other resources that will help me with my current project.

My afternoon lesson begins. We’re in the photography darkroom looking at traditional techniques of developing photographs for a portfolio project. Some of my friends on other courses go off to their maths and English lessons.

4.00pm

Head to my first lesson of the day. We use brand new Macs and Photoshop to work on editing our final photography project.

I go to the Student Centre to see the Work Experience Coordinator about securing a work placement for the summer and arrange a follow up meeting to review the opportunities they have. We look at my CV and discuss ways to improve it.

4.30pm

Arrive at college and head to the canteen. Grab a coffee and catch up with friends about the week so far and what lessons we’ve got today.

9.00am

Here is a typical day at college for one of our students:

I wait for my friends studying at the East Brighton Campus to return on the free shuttle bus so we can walk home together.

MET Progression routes We guarantee every applicant a place at the College; the level of course is dependent on prior achievement (see our admissions policy for more detail). This includes both new and progressing students. This also extends to our university-level courses. Any MET student who successfully completes a Level 3 course has a guaranteed place on a higher level qualification where appropriate courses are available and entry requirements are met. This scheme allows us to do all we can to support our students to be successful and achieve the highest possible standards in their future study and life after university.

158

Supporting student progression The guarantee is linked to the course each student is studying at Level 3. We have carefully identified university-level courses across the MET that provide a natural progression. Regardless of whether you would like to continue your studies at the MET, another provider or move into employment, we will support you. At the heart of what we do is our desire to ensure that our students have all the information they need to make good, informed and positive choices, and continue their studies at a higher level at the MET, should they wish to.

Application made easy You can complete a simple application form without going through the UCAS application process and without attending a formal interview.

The right conditions To progress you must complete your Level 3 course and meet any published entry requirements.
