This creative seaside community is home to music venues, museums, galleries and pop-up venues, including the East Beach artist studios, where local creatives exhibit their work. The seafront tells a story with its eclectic blend of history and the contemporary. Victorian architecture houses cosy eateries, traditional English pubs, and contemporary microbreweries. Spend your weekend at a local bar for a comedy night, or get involved in the flourishing live music scene. Cycle through the stunning South Downs National Park, or try out paddleboarding and windsurfing in one of West Sussex’s most popular watersport locations. Living in Brighton Brighton is a truly unique and vibrant city with a diverse cultural history. Known for embracing every form of creative expression, the city is a hub for innovative culture, theatre and art.
Each year Brighton plays host to a myriad of events, including the largest open-access arts festival in England; Brighton Fringe. The city is home to a plethora of boutiques, venues and galleries, with a seemingly endless supply of restaurants, pubs and clubs to enjoy. Brighton is well-known for its established music scene, independent record stores and the annual Great Escape Festival for emerging artists. When you need to reset from the excitement of the city, the natural beauty of the Sussex countryside is only a stone’s throw away.

Hone your craft in our state-of-the-art creative facilities. From industry-standard recording studios and a fully equipped theatre, to professional workshops and studios, our facilities provide students with the opportunity to study in a truly collaborative and creative environment.
Our creative degrees are based at our West Durrington Campus, where you will have access to facilities dedicated to your course, as well as extensive subject libraries and Mac suites with up-to-date professional software. Our students benefit from photography studios with lighting, an infinity wall, and dark rooms to explore analogue photography.
Students enjoy a dedicated textile workshop with traditional and digital printing facilities, a dye lab, and industry-standard knitting and sewing machines. In the sewing and pattern cutting studios, you can also experiment with electronic pattern cutting. If printmaking is more your thing, then we have a number of printmaking machines available, including laser cutting and 3D printing.
We have a 160-seat on-site theatre, including a fly tower and professional lighting and sound equipment. Backstage there is a scene dock and paint frame, with workshops for wood, metal, ceramics, plaster, resin and plastics to fully develop your prop making skills. We also have makeup and rehearsal studios, and stage over 30 shows a year. State-of-the-art recording studios and a suite of live music and control rooms complete the extensive facilities that are available to our students. Explore and experiment with the aid of our knowledgeable technicians across all subject areas.

Student Voice
Welfare and Mental Health Support
Degree level students are an important part of GB MET’s Student Voice. Student reps are recruited via their courses and represent the views of their peers. These reps will also have the opportunity to be part of our Student Executive and work directly with senior leaders in implementing change within the College.
Our team of expert Welfare and Mental Health Advisers are here to support you throughout your degree and ensure that you are getting help with any mental health issues you may be facing. Libraries and Learning Resource Centres Our Learning Resource Centres (LRCs) are at the centre of college life and provide access to a range of specialist course related resources, library and IT facilities. Centres are well equipped with an extensive collection of books, periodicals, DVDs, music and computers, and provide access to the internet, Microsoft Office, specialised software, and the College’s Virtual Learning Environment. Additionally, you will have access to printing, photocopying and scanning. Staff are on hand to support you with using our learning resources both on and off campus.
Disability and learning support We welcome applications from people with disabilities. Online resources Our Virtual Learning Environment empowers students and tutors to build content together and share in each other’s learning experiences. Students are easily able to access and store their course materials, share and collaborate with others. Meet one of our mentors We chatted with Harriet Lansdown, who is one of our current mentors about her experience supporting our students.
Tell us a little bit about yourself? I am a prop maker and art fabricator, a founding member of the feminist theatre group Clap Back Club and a member of Laumulistasamsteypan. I primarily work in TV and film, and last autumn I worked on my first Netflix production as a scene painter in the art department. I originally studied a BA degree in Performance Design & Practice at Central Saint Martin and completed an additional year in Prop Making and Special Effects at the MET.
Mentoring Scheme The mentoring scheme will connect you with a relevant working professional within the creative industries. You will work together once a month to increase your employability and develop your professional network. The mentoring scheme aims to enhance your industry specific skills and knowledge, and give you the potential to shadow your mentor in the workplace.
The industry mentoring programme is an amazing opportunity to gain valuable experience and advice on how to convert the skills and passions gained at the MET into future careers.” Alumnus
What is your role as a mentor? Every year a MET student contacts me to begin; it can be online or in person. It's up to the student to decide the topics of each meeting. I have some prompts that I feel are worth sharing. For example, professionalism, freelancing, invoicing and rates. We are also encouraged to do an activity like going to an exhibition or trade show. The MET provide a budget to support the student with this, which is great!
What has been your experience of supporting our degree-level students? Incredibly interesting! I get to meet people who are makers and have come at it for completely different reasons: a career change after children, turning a hobby into a job, or someone who just enjoys making! In terms of the support I give them, I think it's mainly signposting and trying to introduce them to other makers in the industry. It also helps to remind me why I do what I do.
Why do you think mentoring is important? I think the formalising of it is! I was informally mentored when I was at university, by my tutor, the technicians and some of my peers, but I didn't have someone dedicated to me and my progression. The more I get to know my mentee, the more I will have them in mind for projects I'm working on. I'll be thinking about how I can involve them.

Purposebuilt studios for fashion design and textile print. This employment-focused course equips you with practical and entrepreneurial skills to prepare you for a career in the global fashion industry. From the beginning of the course, you’ll experience workshop skills in illustration and design, pattern cutting, sewing and garment manufacture, and printed textiles. In year two, you’ll go out into industry as part of your assessed work placement. In many cases you’ll work with designers from the initial concept stage right through to the fashion show. During the first term, you’ll explore a wide range of practical workshops and inductions to inform decisions on the relationship between ideas and form. Our creative campus provides an ideal environment for the development of your abilities, with great scope for cross-media experimentation and fulfilment of live briefs from within the department and from professional studios.
The first year centres on gaining knowledge of techniques, ideas and the essentials of the creative process, exploring the many facets of the subject, including digital and interactive platforms. You will also gain a broad overview of historical and contemporary issues relating to the context of design. In year two, you’ll focus on the professional environment, market awareness and generating the creative and self-management skills necessary for the workplace. Our course allows you to gain an understanding of the creative world of photography, ensuring that you have the skills and techniques to develop your individual style and voice.

This conceptual and practical course includes opportunities for you to work across a range of photographic genres, developing a broad range of photographic and visual communication skills. Facilities include three professional studios: the infinity studio, the black portrait studio and the TV studio, which also has a product table for professional shots. We have a range of cameras, including full-frame digital, and a range of lenses from wide angle to telephoto. We have a darkroom suite plus comprehensive digital post production facilities, and a range of professional lighting and effects machines.

In the first year, you’ll be introduced to core skills and techniques through a series of creative workshops. These typically include: design development, printed textiles, stitch, fabric manipulation, drawing, traditional and digital printmaking, and creative IT.

Entry requirements Entry guide for undergraduate courses We have a range of entry requirements and are keen to assess each application individually, recognising that our applicants have a range of backgrounds and qualifications. The assessment of your application will include a review of your grades, interview, portfolio / audition and any experience. Typical entry requirements are outlined below, but individual offers may vary.
2 A-Levels and 3 GCSEs in other subjects (grade 9-4 or A-C) plus portfolio of work or audition to demonstrate ability in the specialist area OR 1 A-Level, a Foundation course (or equivalent) and 3 GCSEs in other subjects (grade 9-4 or A-C) plus portfolio of work or audition to demonstrate ability in the specialist area.
In exceptional circumstances, applicants who do not meet course entry requirements may still be considered if the course team judges the application demonstrates additional strengths and alternative evidence. English as a second language
Applicants who have English as a second language and do not have a GCSE in English will be asked to take an IELTS assessment or equivalent as part of their offer conditions. They will need to achieve an overall score of 6.0, with 6.0 in the writing element and 5.5 in all other sub elements. The exception to this is students who have English as a second language but have been schooled here i.e. taken GCSE English — if they have achieved a grade D / 3 they would not need to take the IELTS assessment.
Entry guide for Foundation Diploma in Art & Design (one year pre-degree course) Individual offers may vary. Applicants will also be asked to show a portfolio of their work. Applicants should generally have at least one A-Level at grade C or above in a creative subject and 5 GCSEs at grade C / 4 or above, including English and maths—or alternatively a BTEC / UAL Level 3 or equivalent qualification, including English and maths requirements. Qualifications should include a relevant subject, though this may be waived for mature students with evidence of creative work.

Fees and finance Undergraduate courses Fees Up-to-date fees are published on our website at gbmc.ac.uk. You do not have to pay upfront if you are eligible for a UK student loan.
UK student loans – Study now & pay later UK students and those with EU Settlement Status can apply for student loans from the government to pay for their course fees and living costs while they are studying. – You only pay back when you can afford to After your course, as long as you are earning over a certain amount, gradual repayments will automatically be deducted from your salary, along with your income tax. If you still owe anything after 30 years, the debt will be cancelled. – How to apply for student loans You should apply between February and May to make sure your money arrives by September, but students can still apply until nine months after the start of their course. Bursaries from the MET A number of bursaries will be available from the College for eligible students from low income backgrounds, care leavers, and some students who progress from other courses at the MET. For the most up-to-date information, please see gbmc.ac.uk/degree-level-finance.
Foundation Diploma in Art & Design The following applies to UK students and those with EU Settlement Status: Students on the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design do not pay fees as long as they are under age 19 on 31 August in the year their course starts. Students aged 19–23 do not pay fees as long as it is their first full Level 3 government-funded qualification. If you do not fall into one of the above categories, you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan from the government to pay your fees. You will pay it back gradually, but only as long as you are earning over a certain amount.

UAL progression discount Continue your studies with a postgraduate qualification at UAL. All MET graduates who complete a UAL-validated degree are eligible to receive a 20% tuition fee discount on a taught Masters course at UAL. For more information, visit gbmc.ac.uk/UAL-discount
