Costume Design for Performance & Film

This specialist course focuses on costume design and construction for the many contexts of the performance and entertainment industry. It develops skills in design through character exploration and illustration techniques.

You will hone a wide range of technical skills, such as flat pattern cutting and cutting on the stand (underpinned by history of costume sessions), corsetry, tailoring, millinery, design for dance (stretch), fabric dyeing, printing, manipulation and breaking down, and costume props.

This course will challenge you creatively and encourage experimentation and innovation. It is structured to offer a balance of individual projects and production practice on a wide range of internal productions and external commissions. There will also be collaborative opportunities to work with like-minded directors, choreographers, makeup artists and other creatives towards shared artistic goals. You will learn from experienced professionals with current industry knowledge who will support you in discovering and maximising the best opportunities for you. Work experience underpins the training into the second year of the course and opportunities are available to work across theatre, TV, film and events.

The final year is a unique combination of practical and academic work. The focus of this challenging programme is the development of the student as an individual through the practice, study and exploration of theatre skills.

Regular workshops and showcase productions enable you to develop your skills to professional standards, preparing you for employment or postgraduate study.
