Charlotte - Trade & Tryon • Charlotte exists because of its location…at a crossroads of trading paths, and before that, most likely, animal migratory paths. • Charlotte was built on the high ground between two creeks. The crossroads, now Trade and Tryon, was situated on a trading path called the Great Wagon Road that ran along the Piedmont from Philadelphia through Lancaster County east of the Appalachians. • This trading path, about 745 miles long, ran through Charlotte on its way to Augusta. In the early 1700s, it was the path that the new immigrants took south after they arrived in either New York or Philadelphia. • Charlotte Naval Yard - Established in 1862 by the Confederacy capable of forging heavy metal equipment and ammunition. Four Economic Booms • Boom No. 1: Gold! – An important supply center through the Revolutionary War, Charlotte’s first real economic boom came in the 1790s as gold was discovered in Cabarrus and Mecklenburg counties.

• Boom No. 2: Electricity & Textiles – Leading the generation of electricity, Buck Duke launched its third economic boom (1904-1925) . With cheap power, it became a regional textile center. Threads, elastic, fibers, and fabric were being produced. Some of the materials were sent to Michigan to be put in automobiles. Some were used in NC cities for the furniture upholstery. And much was used to make clothing ranging from socks to pants to sweaters.

• Boom No. 3: Military Base – In training for World War I, Camp Greene was built in 1917 and 60,000 men from all over the country arrived by train into Charlotte. “Each soldier was getting $8.00 a month with $4.00 sent home, but each had $4.00 he could spend here.”

• Boom No. 4: Banking – Charlotte’s fourth economic boom resulted in becoming the second largest banking center in the country. But it was all started by some very entrepreneurial bankers, named Hugh McColl and Ed Crutchfield, around 1958 when they decided to get bigger, and to cross state lines.

• Following the recession of 2007 and 2008 – Jim Rogers of Duke Energy worked to create an Energy Consortium to make Charlotte an Energy Capital. CLT.biz LLC
