Save on swimming lessons

While many people avoid swimming during winter, now is the perfect time to consider learning to swim. Council considers swimming to be a skill for life and we are proud of the learn to swim and aquatic safety programs offered at our two aquatic centres. In partnership with the YMCA, Council has cut the cost of learning to swim at our two centres. Swimming lesson fees have dropped from $41.50 to $38 per fortnight. Greater Dandenong is also one of the few municipalities that offers concession rates for swimming lessons, and this fee has also dropped from $33 to $30.40 per fortnight. Visiting our two centres with the family will also be cheaper, with the family swim pass dropping from $19.60 to $18 (for a family of five). Cr Angela Long

► Red Gum Ward

The owner, Ian Clark, came and spoke to me when I was mayor in 2013 about establishing a water sports facility on crown land near Patterson River, Bangholme. The land was very run down and had a lot of dumped rubbish on it. I was very enthusiastic about the proposal as I had seen one of these facilities in Germany and it was well utilised. Ian has spent a lot of money on this water park to bring a unique facility to our city. Water skiing by using a cable instead of a motorboat is more affordable, the water is not too deep and you still have to wear all the same gear, which I believe makes it safer. Melbourne Cable Park is a hidden gem in Greater Dandenong that provides the opportunity to access water sports for people of all abilities. There is cable water skiing and wakeboarding over two ponds and a climbing frame for the more adventurous.

► Paperbark Ward

The cable park has specially designed wakeboards that have seats on them for people who are in wheelchairs, so that users are able to enjoy the freedom of gliding through water. Safety is a priority, with a specially designed boat able to pick up fallen wakeboarders quickly.

the proposed expansion of NPAC and preferences of the future of the outdoor pool. Council will consider all responses before making a decision and finalising the Draft Aquatic Strategy.

Over the years, Council has worked to represent our wonderfully diverse community and we are proud to say that we are a community that welcomes all.

The State Government has committed $3.05 million to upgrade Ross Reserve, including $750,000 for a new pavilion, and other money for a new basketball court, jogging track and lengthening of the junior football oval.

The playground will offer an inclusive experience for all, with diverse play equipment and reflective spaces for children, youth and adults of all abilities. The playground will sit between the Noble Park Community Centre and the Noble Park Aquatic Centre (NPAC) which has itself been the subject of some public consultation over the past few months. In considering the future of both NPAC and Dandenong Oasis, Council sought feedback on

The park has also become very popular with schools from Greater Dandenong and other Melbourne suburbs. Melbourne Cable Park is at 5 River End Road (near the corner of McMahons Road), Bangholme. For bookings phone 8780 7777.

I n the meantime if you wish to contact me on any Council related matters please email me at angela.long@cgd.vic. gov.au or phone me on 9795 6574 or 0466 004 616.

Cr Roz Blades AM

The City of Greater Dandenong has a rich and diverse history, and this year we celebrate 25 years since the old cities of Springvale and Dandenong were amalgamated.

Council has carried out extensive consultation regarding plans to build an all abilities playground in Ross Reserve Noble Park, and I am hoping to be able to unveil the plans at a Mayoral Family Fun day later this year.

The wheelchair wakeboarding has been featured in the media recently with ABC News reports sharing how popular it is for people from across Melbourne.

I want the whole community to come and celebrate our wonderful city and explore this changing precinct at the Mayoral Family Fun Day which will be held at Ross Reserve, Memorial Drive, Noble Park, on Saturday 26 October, from 12pm–4pm. We will share more information about the Mayoral Family Fun Day in the October edition of this magazine and on Council’s website in the coming weeks.

In the meantime if you would like to contact me about any Council-related issues you can email me at roz.blades@ cgd.vic.gov.au or phone me on 0417 053 612 or 9701 5821.

THE CITY Council News

Working for You

Council supports aged residents Council will continue to deliver In Home Support Services under the Commonwealth Home Support Program. Council’s contract to deliver home support services to Greater Dandenong residents was recently extended until June 2022. Support services include: ► domestic

assistance care ► respite care ► home maintenance and home modifications ► social support programs, including trips to the library, leisure centres and shopping, and the day program at Mackay Street, Springvale ► food services. ► personal

Council sees the home support program as very important to our older residents and wants to see eligible residents receive the highest level of support. To register for the services phone My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 or visit myagedcare.gov.au for more information. Residents living with a disability who are under the age of 65 may also be eligible for care. For more information phone Council’s Community Care Department on 8571 5503.

Homes for wildlife More than 200 local school children have taken part in a Council program to build homes for wildlife. The Habitat, Hollows and Nesting Box program is a hands-on, outdoor based program teaching primary school children about the animals that call Greater Dandenong home and where they seek shelter. Students visit Fotheringham Reserve in Dandenong over six weeks and study habitat, leaf litter and creek health, as well as tree hollows and the animals that use the hollows for breeding and shelter. Students then build nesting boxes that can be used by a variety of animals at reserves across the City of Greater Dandenong. One of the nesting boxes installed at Fotheringham Reserve has become home to a pair of kookaburras who return each year to nest.

Mayoral Forum Greater Dandenong Mayor Roz Blades recently hosted a Mayoral Forum on Social Housing. Representatives from housing and homelessness agencies attended alongside government departments, Victoria Police, local community service providers and Council representatives. State Member for Dandenong Gabrielle Williams closed the event with a speech highlighting the need for collaboration. Mayor Blades also spoke about the need to work together to find real housing solutions for Greater Dandenong residents.

www.greaterdandenong.com

The program has been running since 2017 and has taught many students about our city’s bushland areas and how important it is to preserve them. The program finishes with a barbecue in the park and a celebration of the bush, including a chance for the children to monitor nesting boxes at Fotheringham Reserve using a camera. This is just one of the many biodiversity programs Council runs. Others include indigenous tree planting days for the community and schools, Adopt a Park for kindergartens and nature play sessions for schools and residents at Alex Wilkie Nature Reserve. Visit greaterdandenong.com or phone 8571 1702 for more information.

Ideas discussed during the forum included using government land for social housing, modular housing, housing for people seeking asylum and the importance of partnership between different levels of government and housing agencies. Mayor Blades said the forum allowed for open and honest discussion about the needs of some of our most vulnerable residents. “Council is committed to finding housing solutions to address our community’s need for more social and affordable housing in Greater Dandenong,” Mayor Blades said.

Dandenong’s busiest pedestrian space has had a lighting upgrade. Palm Plaza is the city’s most frequented public space, offering a safe, family friendly, pedestrian thoroughfare. The new lights are more energy efficient, brighter and longer lasting, which makes the space safer and also saves money on usage and maintenance costs. the market is always looking for new stallholders to turn their passions into business. If you have work rights in Australia, live in Melbourne and you make the products yourself, then you are eligible to become a stallholder. SMRC will also support potential stallholders with business training and mentoring. Palm Plaza is a major thoroughfare between Dandenong Market and the Dandenong Plaza shopping centre. The established tree canopy and iconic palm trees make the mall an inner city oasis. The design of the lights was inspired by the palms. The project was delivered by Archilux, Versalux Lighting Systems and Obrien Electrical.

FAST FACTS The iconic Dandenong Market is the second oldest market operating in Victoria and attracts more than 5 million visitors each year. You can charge your electric car for free at the Dandenong Market. There is a Chargepoint Electric Vehicle Charger in the multi-level carpark which can be accessed from Clow Street.
