The plan, when finalised, will set out the key objectives and strategies to guide everything from development and open space, to economic and social planning and sustainability outcomes. Cr Angela Long

► Red Gum Ward

Abbotts Road is a vital connector road to freeways, highways and major roads into and out of this industrial area of our city. Greater Dandenong has a very large industrial area which employs over 60,000 people and any improvement that we can make to the road system is vital to keep these industries viable, helping get employees to and from work as well as getting their supplies in and their products out of their factories.

The Abbotts Road duplication works in Dandenong South, including the construction of the Abbotts Road bridge has been a great improvement to the flow of traffic throughout the area. Before the duplication work Abbotts Road was a bottleneck at this location where two lanes reduced to one.

► Silverleaf Ward As a new Councillor for the Silverleaf Ward I thought I would take this opportunity to introduce myself to the community. I was born in Dandenong and still live in Dandenong North. I went to school at Nazareth College in Noble Park North, where I met my now wife in Year 7. All of my childhood memories revolve around this area. My family had a milk bar on Jacksons Road that I used to help out in as a child, and a supermarket on Police Road, which I still, to this day, work at. I remember as a child going to Springvale with my family and eating all the different varieties of Asian food. Many of you will know my father, Naim Melhem, was a councillor with the City of Greater Dandenong. When he left his role as a councillor I was 15 years old, but I saw the impact he made in this community and since then I have been passionate about this community and how Council and residents can work together to improve.

The cost of this project was $5.5 million and was jointly funded by Council, who contributed $4.42 million, the Federal Government who contributed $1.14 million. Aldi, who have a warehouse in Produce Drive, Dandenong South, also contributed $280,000 to build a new section of road connecting Produce Drive to Abbotts Road. Abbotts Road rail crossing will also be removed with works to begin by the end of this year. The rail crossing has 23,000 vehicles and 120 trains going through every week day. Removing

the rail crossing will improve the flow of traffic. The project will also create hundreds of jobs for local people.

Greater Dandenong has been very fortunate to have four rail crossings removed and fully funded by the State Government. This includes crossings at Heatherton, Chandler, Corrigan and Abbotts roads. I am always available to answer any Council related questions and can be contacted on 9795 6574 or 0466 004 616 or email me at angela.long@cgd.vic.gov.au

Cr Zaynoun Melhem Some key issues that I feel very strongly about include youth unemployment, and unemployment in general. I am heavily focussed on youth and ensuring we have the right measures in place to ensure our youth are heading in the right direction. I would also like to make sure Greater Dandenong’s multiculturalism is celebrated. I also want to ensure our beautiful parks are maintained and ensure we have great open spaces for the whole community.

My vision for Greater Dandenong is as a strong multicultural community with a strong economy, and I want it to be as beautiful in the future as it has been in the past.

If you would like to contact me about any community issues you can email me at Zaynoun. melhem@cgd.vic.gov.au or phone me on 0466 518 082.

Working for You

Smoking laws to change Changes to smoking laws this year include bans at outdoor dining premises, and tougher laws applying to shisha tobacco and e-cigarettes. The new laws, which will take place from 1 August 2017, will help protect the community from exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke. Councillors have long advocated for a ban on cigarette smoking in outdoor dining areas and have been working with the State Government, other local governments and health agencies to address laws surrounding shisha tobacco since 2015.

Tatterson Park Pavilion One of the biggest capital works projects in Greater Dandenong is really starting to take shape. Work on the Tatterson Park Pavilion started in July 2016 and is due to be completed in September this year. Mayor Jim Memeti said the project would provide Greater Dandenong residents with a top class sporting and community hub. “Keysborough is experiencing significant growth, and this facility will help cater for demand in the sport and recreation areas, it will also give the community a beautiful facility for meetings and functions,” Cr Memeti said.

“A synthetic playing field will also be built after the pavilion is finished, which will cater for everything from grass roots sport to elite level competition, making this a truly unique facility for the south east region.” When completed the building will include community meeting and function rooms, multi-purpose spaces, a commercial kitchen, eight unisex change rooms, umpire and official amenities, kiosks and a 500-seat spectator viewing area. Council has invested $6.2 million into the project, while the Australian Government has committed $4.8 million. The remaining funds ($650,000) have come from the State Government.

Under the Tobacco Amendment Act 2016 smoking will be banned: ► at

outdoor areas of food premises during food service times, including beer gardens, footpath dining areas and courtyards

► in

all outdoor areas at food fairs where the principal activity is the supply of food for consumption at the event

► in

outdoor areas within 10m of food stalls and vans at organised outdoor events including community or street festivals.

From 1 August 2017 the definition of tobacco products under the Tobacco Act will be broadened to include e-cigarettes and shisha products that contain any amount of tobacco. This means the sale, advertising and use of shisha tobacco and e-cigarettes will be brought into line with other products such as cigarettes and cigars. Visit www2.health.vic.gov.au/ public-health/tobacco-reform for more information.

Sugar Gliders Samba Workshops

Artist in Residence Program

Drum Theatre is excited to announce the first Artist in Residence as local artist Rana Mitra. Rana brings his love and talent of Brazillian drumming to the Drum and the community. His workshops will focus on the Samba and Batacuda rhythms of Brazil and will be open to everyone aged 10 and up.

Rana Mitra

In 2017, Drum Theatre embarks on a new era of working closely with local artists to produce new works, which not only entertain the local community but also engage them through an Artist in Residence program.

The Sugar Gliders Samba Workshops will be held every Thursday until the end of Term 1 (30 March), from 6pm–8pm.

Drum Theatre is excited to announce the first Artist in Residence as local artist Rana Mitra. Rana brings his love and talent of Brazillian drumming to the Drum and the community. He will work with people of all ages in weekly workshops, teaching them the basics of drumming and rhythm to collaboratively produce a performance work to be performed later in the year.

The fun, interactive workshops are open to everyone aged 10+, and will bring the infectious swinging Samba and Batacuda rhythms of the Brazilian Carnival to the people of Greater Dandenong. Over the term you will learn the rhythms of the carnival and later expand your repertoire to incorporate songs, melodies and dance.

There is no need for previous experience, just a love of learning and rhythm.

Cost is $5 per workshop. For bookings visit drumtheatre. com.au or phone 8571 1666.

Short Cuts Film Festival Short Cuts is back for 2017, and the top entries will be screened at Drum Theatre on Friday 5 May at 7pm.

Celebrate Youth Week

Get involved

National Youth Week is a celebration of young people aged 12–25, and this year Greater Dandenong will use the week to put youth on a path to create their own future. The Create Your Future workshops will help explore career choices and get you job ready for 2017 and beyond. ► Are

you an aspiring Robogal keen to pursue a career in engineering, science and technology? ► Are you interested in a career in Victoria Police or the Defence Forces? ► Want to get involved in volunteering? ► Looking to take your business idea to the next level? ► Want some tips on how to get that casual or part time job? ► Want to learn how to become a soccer coach or referee? If you answered yes to any of these questions then you will want to get involved in these workshops that will happen between Monday 27 March and Friday 7 April. There will also be some fun activities and events happening across Greater Dandenong, including a skate competition at the Noble Park Skate Park and a soccer tournament in conjunction with Melbourne Victory at Dandenong’s Pop-up Park. Become a Young Leader in Greater Dandenong Council is calling on young people to take the lead in 2017. Young people aged 16–25 who live, work or study in Greater Dandenong can join the Young Leaders Program. Now in its ninth year, the program provides unique opportunities for young people to develop their skills across a wide range of topics, including project planning, public speaking, media and promotion, effective communication, conflict resolution and stress management. It also encourages participants to develop a better understanding of the role of local government and how Council works with the community. Facilitated by Council’s Youth and Family Services department, the program gives participants the chance to work in small teams to develop and deliver a community project.

Mayor Jim Memeti said the program offered opportunities for personal and professional growth. “The skills learned through the Young Leaders Program can help our young community members get a great start in life. Many of our previous participants have gone on to achieve great things,” Cr Memeti said. The program will run from 2 May to 19 September, 2017, with meetings held weekly.

Take part in a soccer tournament as part of Youth Week celebrations.

THE CITY

organisation partnerships were developed ► Springvale

Community Aid and Advice Bureau from where much of the settlement work in the community originated

► Springvale

Neighbourhood House which was built primarily to provide a meeting place for social clubs from different communities.

A final marker will help tell the story of the way in which the Springvale Road shops changed with each new wave of migration and will be launched on 26 March at 2pm. The wider community is invited to help celebrate the completion of the Enterprise Trail.

The markers contain photos and stories which explain the sites’ significance and include information about the people or organisations involved in supporting new arrivals to Australia. The most recent marker was installed at the site of the Springvale Community Health Service, on the corner of Windsor and Buckingham avenues. Chisholm raises awareness of family violence Students at Dandenong’s Chisholm TAFE are looking to break down barriers and encourage awareness of Domestic Violence issues in the community. The campus held an awareness day last October, and continues to support the Clothesline Project, which remembers women who have lost their lives in domestic violence situations. The awareness day focussed on the theme “Domestic Violence doesn’t always look like this”, and featured students wearing makeup that depicted injuries. The confronting scenes helped spark conversations about family violence and the fact that victims were not always so conspicuous.

The theme also addressed the imbalance of power and control and how that can affect relationships.

The awareness day raised money for Share the Dignity, a charity supporting homeless women, and led into White Ribbon Day in November. If you or someone you know requires support please phone 1800 RESPECT.

Greater Dandenong Neighbourhood Watch will hold its first public forum for the year on Wednesday 15 March.

“Our public forums give residents a chance to come together to share their experiences and learn more about being safe.”

Guest speakers include Victoria Police Inspector Mark Langhorn and a Council representative who will talk about community safety.

Mrs Vernon said Neighbourhood Watch was always looking for volunteers to help out, from as little as a couple of times a year to a weekly commitment.

Greater Dandenong Neighbourhood Watch President Dawn Vernon said the afternoon session was a trial this month, but if it was successful the group would introduce an afternoon session for each public forum.

“I think it is important for people to hear about the good work that is happening in our community. There is often so much negative news being reported, but Greater Dandenong is a safe community,” Mrs Vernon said.

A display of the Clothesline Project also helped bring to light the number of women who died in 2016 at the hands of a partner. The project is an international one that displays t-shirts on a clothesline, with each t-shirt recording the name of a woman who died.

Neighbourhood Watch  helps make city safe

An afternoon session will be held at 3pm before the regular evening forum at 7.30pm, to give more people a chance to attend.

She said the group was also looking to replace worn and faded signs throughout the City of Greater Dandenong, and encouraged residents to get in touch to report signs that needed replacement. The public forum will be held at the Paddy O’Donoghue Centre, 18 Buckley Street, Noble Park. For more information or to report a faded sign visit nhw.greaterdandenong.org or phone 0407 325 030.

New Dandenong office supports community The Federation of South Sudanese Associations in Victoria has a permanent office space in Dandenong, helping cater for the needs of the South Sudanese community in Melbourne’s south east. Federation Chairman Kenyatta J Dei Wal said the announcement of funding support by the State Government late last year was commendable. He said the funding would help support community projects and engagement services for South Sudanese youth. “This is a massive shift towards social justice and inclusive policy development in Australia, (but) there is still more work to be done and it requires our collective efforts. Through partnerships and collaborations I am certain we can achieve more,” he said. The Federation office is based in the Hub Arcade, Dandenong, and can be contacted via email at fssav15@gmail.com or by phone on 8752 3959.
