Transportation Logistics

It goes beyond planes, trains and automobiles. The transportation and logistics industry is expansive and includes a diverse makeup of companies, each playing a unique role in transporting people and goods to their destinations.

Greater Green Bay is home to more than 680 of those companies and ranks 18th for employment concentration in transportation and logistics nationally. Higher education institutions in our region offer quality hands-on training and degree opportunities for future and current industry professionals.

The Greater Green Bay Chamber recognizes the significant contributions of transportation and logistics organizations to the local economy. We engage industry stakeholders through a task force where they can share best practices and identify ways to elevate the industry for future workforce development. In this edition, you will read about the innovative work happening in our community around transportation and logistics and how the companies featured keep moving forward – literally.

Breakthrough and U.S. Venture Partner with Truckers Against Trafficking

Breakthrough, a Green Bay-based transportation management technology company, recently partnered with TAT, formerly Truckers Against Trafficking, to create awareness about human trafficking. With its connection to the transportation industry, Breakthrough seized the opportunity to educate their team members and their client base on TAT’s important mission. TAT is a 501c3 organization dedicated to raising a defensive force of transportation professionals across North America to assist law enforcement in the recognition and reporting of human trafficking to aid in the recovery of victims and the arrest of perpetrators.

Breakthrough’s client base consists of some of the largest manufacturing and retail brands in the United States across many industry verticals. With a connection to these shippers that have a massive transportation footprint, Breakthrough knew they were the ideal audience to engage in TAT’s mission to make a tangible impact in the fight against this growing

global issue. In early August, Breakthrough invited TAT to present their platform at The Mercury Group, an annual gathering of Breakthrough shipper clients that drives deep conversations, peer-based learning, and collaboration. Esther Goetsch, executive director at TAT, discussed TAT’s mission and how companies can become involved. Josh Holland, vice president of dealer development and mobility solutions deployment at Bridgestone, enriched the discussion by sharing valuable insights from their partnership with TAT and detailed strategic plans to collaborate in the future.

This engagement provided an invaluable opportunity to educate shippers on how they can raise awareness about human trafficking and provide necessary training to their carrier partners. Recognizing truck drivers’ constant movement across various regions, they are uniquely positioned to identify and report suspicious activities, including potential instances of human trafficking.

John Teggart, president of Breakthrough, articulated the company’s commitment succinctly: “We believe in leveraging our position in the transportation industry to foster positive change. By partnering with TAT, we can connect shippers to an essential cause, equipping them with the knowledge and resources to make a meaningful difference.”

To further this mission, Breakthrough, along with their parent company, U.S. Venture, is also hosting TAT’s Freedom Drivers Project (FDP). This first-of-its-kind mobile exhibit educates members of the trucking industry and the general public about the realities of human trafficking and how the trucking industry is combating it. The FDP trailer provides many with their first glimpse into human trafficking and simple action steps anyone can take to identify potential situations and react appropriately.

Schneider: Pioneering Sustainability and Responsibility in Transportation

Legendary Green Bay Company Continues to Drive Industry Efficiency

As one of North America’s largest transportation and logistics companies, Schneider plays a vital role in the lives of consumers, ensuring that products and goods essential to their lives make it from shippers to shelves. In fact, almost every item in your home has been on a truck at one point. As a responsible company, Schneider is always pushing to deliver freight more reliably, safely and efficiently, exceeding customer expectations while at the same time supporting and meeting sustainability goals. In doing so, the company puts Green Bay on the map as a hub for creative and forward-thinking freight solutions.

REDUCING CARBON EMISSIONS

Schneider firmly believes in creating a more sustainable future. As an early adopter of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), the company operates one of the largest BEV fleets in North America at its Southern California Operations Center, where it also built a charging depot that allows 32 trucks to charge simultaneously. The nearly 100 BEVs now move hundreds of loads a day, quickly reaching nearly five million zero emission miles. Schneider even made history as the first third-party carrier in the world to haul zero emission shipments for PepsiCo.

CREATING A RAIL NETWORK THAT CUTS EMISSIONS

Schneider strategically collaborates with three highly efficient railroads, which is critical because transporting freight by rail reduces fuel consumption, with one ton of freight being shipped up to 500 miles on the equivalent of a single gallon of fuel. Union Pacific Railroad and CSX provide superior service, access to more rail lanes and direct transcontinental freight connections, while CPKC increases reliability, security and capacity between Mexico and the Midwest. By creating this differentiated rail network, Schneider can offer customers more options – a win for consumers as it increases efficiency and reduces emissions.

A NEW WAY TO INNOVATE

Schneider took a first-in-the-industry approach to innovation and collaboration, opening a Green Bay facility dedicated to it and designed to inspire creative thinking and problem solving. The Grove Innovation Center houses visualization technologies to test the use of artificial intelligence, machine learning, automation and user experience technologies. Schneider hosted more than 250 events at The Grove in its first year – from associate brainstorming sessions to customer events – with the goal of reviewing processes and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement. In support of the local community, the company also hosted a number of events, including two innovation sessions with local high schoolers that engaged their critical thinking to solve challenges geared toward the transportation industry.

Building on its nearly 90 years of experience, Schneider will continue to explore additional sustainable freight transportation solutions that support customer and business success and embrace a greener future. It takes collaboration with key industry and community stakeholders, but Schneider is confident that what is good for the environment can also be good for business.

Serving More People in More Ways:

That’s the Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport Story

As area residents and businesses resume traveling, Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport (GRB) is making investments in areas ranging from travelers’ amenities to facility improvements. “It’s been great to see a rebound in both business and leisure travel,” says Airport Director Marty Piette, A.A.E. “In 2023, passenger numbers were up 9.4% over the previous year and, from January through June of 2024, passenger numbers were up another 3%. That’s a good sign as summer and fall are generally the busiest travel times at GRB, so that percentage should increase.”

What’s contributing to the travel boom and the resulting positive impact on the local economy? There are a number factors in play. Traveling has once again become a part of people’s lives whether it’s for fun or business. Travelers realize that by flying local, they can save time and money. With GRB’s continuous improvement focus, travelers are seeing and experiencing a number of those enhancements.

FACILITY IMPROVEMENTS

Over a two-year period, more than $8 million in investments are being made to GRB’s facilities, grounds and airfields. This includes terminal upgrades such as parking lot repaving, fencing and lighting as well as exterior painting. This summer, new entrance canopies, providing protection from the elements when arriving or departing, are being installed. Less visible, but equally important, has been work on the runways and taxiways, providing a smoother and safer navigation of the airfield for landing or departing aircraft. This benefits not only commercial traffic, but private and charter traffic

for business as well as those flying in for Packers games. One of these projects recently received the Wisconsin Transportation Builders Association/WisDOT ContractorEngineers “Outstanding Construction Project Award”.

NEW FOOD OPTIONS – NEW RETAIL OPTIONS

With a new vendor, Tailwind Hospitality, managing GRB food service and retail stores, travelers have noticed a big difference. Food offerings range from a full-service restaurant to grab and go stations with expanded seating in the concourse, which is perfect for people watching! New retail stores now offer a wide range of products including local food and beverage items to bring back home or give as gifts, along with those “oh I forgot” items like phone chargers, over-the-counter headache meds and more.

Parking at GRB has always been easy and affordable compared to big city airports. As mentioned, it’s also an area that’s been substantially improved, with more to come. Travelers were recently asked to take a parking survey to weigh in on what they’d like to see happen on the parking front. Those results are now under review so look for some new offerings in the future!

AIR SERVICE DEVELOPMENT

We’re fortunate to have five airlines serving GRB: American, Delta, Frontier, Sun Country and United. “The airlines take note of the routes that are most supported by local travelers, and you will see them adjusting to meet demand,” explains Piette. “With football season here, capacity is being added for some of the home Packers games. For example, Delta is offering a nonstop flight to/from the October 27 Jacksonville game and a nonstop flight for the December 15 Seattle game.”

GRB leadership meets with all the major airlines, whether they serve GRB or not, several times a year to share information about our community and make a case for supporting additional and new service. A big opportunity to share our story is coming up in October when Green Bay hosts TakeOff North America, an airline industry conference. Up to 250 airline and airport representatives from across the country will convene at Lambeau Field for this event. GRB is partnering with Discover Green Bay to ensure attendees experience all the great things our community has to offer, while GRB meets with airline reps to encourage them to increase air service to GRB. “Like all industries, relationship building is extremely important,” says GRB Marketing Communications Director Susan Levitte, M.A. “This conference offers the airline reps the opportunity to experience first-hand the economic vitality of our community, which is something they take into consideration when making decisions about air service.”

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

GRB takes great pride in being engaged with the Northeast Wisconsin community. You will see GRB at holiday parades, training camp and events like EAA’s AirVenture. This summer at AirVenture, there was a Celebrate Green Bay Day, which drew a lot of attention, including a nearly

30% increase in visitors to GRB’s on-site booth promoting the airport and Green Bay. Visitors came from across the U.S. and as far away as Christchurch, New Zealand.

While AirVenture takes place in Oshkosh, it has a big impact on GRB and the Green Bay community. Jet Air had a 44.5% increase in planes parked at its FBO, Executive Air had an 8.6% increase in business and GRB commercial traffic through the terminal was up 20.4% for the week. Many of those pilots and aviation fans also stayed in Green Bay, with many area hotels being at or near capacity for the week.

GRB is also part of planning efforts for the 2025 NFL Draft. “This is another exciting event that will bring thousands of visitors to our area, many of them flying into our airport, which is the home airport of the Packers,” adds Piette. “We will be sure to welcome them and encourage them to come back in the future.”

ECONOMIC IMPACT

While most people don’t stop to think about it, a healthy and vibrant airport is indicative of a healthy and vibrant community economy. The economic impact of GRB is well over $300 million a year. “Being able to serve the air travel needs of area businesses and community members is vital,” states Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach. “That is why we are investing in infrastructure, adding amenities and always looking for expanded or new air service. We thank the community for supporting GRB.”

The Crucial Role of Digital Accuracy in Transportation

In today’s rapidly evolving transportation industry, digital accuracy has become increasingly important. Digital accuracy is the alignment between data and real-world events; for example, the status of shipments. For KBX Logistics, a Koch company and global leader in transportation, maintaining digital accuracy is essential for delivering world-class, technology-driven solutions.

Digital accuracy is like having a detailed blueprint of a house that perfectly matches its actual layout. Tracy Reiss, Senior Vice President of Transportation at KBX Logistics, illustrates this concept: “When a load is delivered, how quickly are we able to have that arrival represented in the system?” Accurate digital records ensure that shipment statuses are precisely reflected, leading to better decision-making and operational efficiency.

To address challenges in this area, KBX Logistics has implemented digital accuracy reports. Reiss explains, “We now have reports that tell us how quickly we can start and close a load after it actually happens.” This improves customer visibility and streamlines operations, enabling KBX to respond effectively to real-time events.

Additionally, KBX Logistics leverages tools like KBX Track™, which depends on digital accuracy. KBX Track™ consolidates data from all transportation modes into a single, user-friendly platform, providing real-time visibility of shipment status.

The importance of digital accuracy extends beyond recordkeeping; it significantly impacts innovation within the transportation industry. Accurate data forms the foundation

for many advanced systems and processes. Reiss notes, “Data is really at the root of digital accuracy. Any systems or processes that we change are dependent on that data being accurate.” For example, AI algorithms designed to optimize fleet management rely on precise data to function effectively.

As customer expectations continue to shift towards real-time updates, discrepancies between digital records and physical events can lead to confusion. For instance, if a load has been collected by a carrier but the data shows it as pending, it can create uncertainty when assessing the shipment’s status. Such misalignments can damage customer trust, especially for clients who require timely deliveries and frequent updates.

Looking ahead, the importance of accurate data is expected to grow, particularly with the rise of automation and robotics in transportation. Reiss adds, “The data we move for our customers is as or more important than the goods themselves today. Especially in the future, if robots are doing the accepting and unloading of goods, if the data doesn’t say it’s there, it physically being there won’t matter.”

In summary, digital accuracy is crucial for both current operations and future innovations in transportation. KBX Logistics continues to lead with technologydriven solutions, ensuring that digital accuracy remains central to meeting customer expectations and harnessing technological advancements. Prioritizing ongoing leadership development and empowering staff are key focuses for ASL. The company looks forward to further growth and success, while its drivers play their role in what’s for dinner for millions of Americans.

WI Company Leading the Nation in TEU Import & Export Flow Analytics

Wisconsin is a global leader in import and export business due to our proximity to the largest inland port in North America and the GKM WI TEU Intermodal Circuitous Platform, which has revolutionized how companies manage their global supply chains from the tower.

GKM’s success has caught the attention of importers and exporters in surrounding states, but there are still many manufacturers and producers in Wisconsin who can benefit from the platform.

While GKM WI’s intellectual property will be used throughout the Midwest now, the Platform began in Wisconsin, and this is where our focus remains.

BEHIND THE PLATFORM’S SUCCESS

There are many reasons companies attend information sessions to learn more about the Platform. Chief among these is the need for more visibility and better practices to monitor variable costs associated with servicing TEUs.

Exporters seek to reduce assessorial and other fees that are invoiced by forwarders for door-to-door services. Additionally, costs associated with delays entering or leaving Joliet can become excessive when back logs occur.

Importers also face congestion when TEUs are delivered to Joliet. When containers are drayed to “origin” or “destination” many companies pay a two-way rate. This and other accrued costs make it difficult to manage TEU flows and expenses.

Finally, importers and exporters that use traditional methods to transport TEUs to “door” or “inland port” lack visibility. This limits options to implement corrective actions that may reduce costs related to detention, per diem or demurrage.

A DECADE OF TRANSPORTATION SUCCESS

Not only does the GKM Wisconsin TEU Platform solve all the problems above, but it also gives importers the ability to remove products from the trailer upon arrival and integrate them into inventory without additional sorting or handling.

Since the Platform launched 10 years ago, every company that has on-boarded is still a client. Over the same period, there haven’t been any incidents resulting in damage during the transfer process, pallet builds that are per client specifications or delivering goods to final destinations.

Even better, in 2024 we introduced “Inter-mode Direct.” A unique modality that eliminates the need for TEUs to travel into and out of Wisconsin.

Because of its documented success, GKM is expanding the Platform to include TEU flow-analytics, management, and transload services for companies that import or export products in, KS, MI, MO, IA, IN, KY, MN, OH, and TN.

However, our continuous goal is to introduce more importers and exporters in Wisconsin to the Platform. The next Information Only Webinar will take place in September. Please visit www.gkmwi.com to read about or register for this event.

WSW Logistics, a subsidiary of McDonald Companies, the family-owned business that has been around for over 120 years! McDonald Companies focuses on and provides services around commercial real estate development, property management, and supply chain needs to our tenants and our community.

WSW Logistics is our supply chain management, specialty services and warehousing division. We are based in Wisconsin, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. We offer customized solutions for businesses of all sizes and industries, including regional trucking, waste hauling, rail moving, and yard spotting. We also offer secure indoor and outdoor storage, dedicated on-site management, and efficient transloading and distribution services.

Over the last five years we have increased our focus on rail service solutions for several customers. Some of the current products we handle include carbon anodes, lumber, paper industry raw materials/ finished goods, and even pizza dough!

Through our close relationships with local rail providers, WSW Logistics has gained an expansive knowledge of the rail industry’s standard processes & procedures. We even have our very own Track-Mobile (mini locomotive) used to service a large local papermill.

Aside from offering more creative logistics solutions for our customer base, one of the largest benefits we’ve experienced from rail is the additional training and learning opportunities for our team members. We are very proud of individual and team development and ownership as we continue to strive to be industry experts in an ever-evolving rail market. At McDonald Companies, creativity is at our core, we love solution development whether it’s customized equipment or building modification, we are all-in on figuring it out with you!

Custom Logistics Solutions

For most shippers and manufacturers in NE Wisconsin, finding a trucking company or other logistics partners to handle their regular shipping needs is not an issue. There are many 3PL’s, freight brokers and carriers to choose from that can handle cookie-cutter less than truckload (LTL) or full truck load (FTL) shipments. But what if a shipper has unique requirements that fall outside of what these two options can provide? For example, an extremely fragile load that must arrive damage free, or an urgent load that must deliver sameday, or a load that needs to be delivered to a location with no loading dock.

eliminates this pain point. The freight is carefully blanket wrapped and secured in our truck or sprinter van and delivered direct. There is no cross docking like there is in LTL as the freight remains secure in a single truck until it reaches its destination. A Green Bay based cabinet manufacturer utilizes this solution to ship bare cabinets across the country. In doing so, they have eliminated both packaging costs and damage claims.

Zenith Express has provided customized logistics solutions to NE Wisconsin shippers and manufacturers for over 25 years, and we specialize in moving freight with unique requirements. We are asset based with a fleet of 26-foot straight trucks and sprinter vans and thirty-one professional drivers. Our solutions include Expedite, Exclusive Use, White Glove and Trade Show Logistics.

Our Expedite solution is for any freight that must arrive to its destination as soon as possible. The process often starts with a simple rate quote request completed and submitted on our website. If the rate is accepted, the load is picked up at the specified date and time and delivered direct to the receiver 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. It is not uncommon for Zenith to receive expedite requests at 2AM! With GPS enabled vehicles, the freight’s location and estimated time of arrival is constantly monitored to ensure timely delivery.

Our Exclusive Use solution is for any freight that is extremely fragile (or valuable) and that must arrive damage free. Filing and processing damage claims is always a frustrating

Our White Glove solution provides two-person deliveries for hard to handle freight that may need liftgate, inside delivery, unpacking and assembly services. A Manitowoc based vending machine company utilizes this solution to set in place vending machines into cafeterias and snack rooms all over NE Wisconsin.

Trade Shows are a vital networking tool for NE Wisconsin businesses and our Trade Show Logistics solution is tailor-made to ensure trade show materials and booths are delivered on time before the event starts and retrieved immediately after the event ends. Trade Shows have very specific shipping processes and require an experienced logistics professional to eliminate delays and control costs.

Being a specialized logistics provider has its challenges, but we are honored to serve and participate in NE Wisconsin’s unique and diverse economy. Our set of solutions help many different industries ship products on time and damage free which allows them to focus on their core competencies.
