Duke TIP students are selected nationwide each year based on their high-level performance on grade-level standardized test scores, with only those who score at or above the 95th percentile qualified for the honor. This

Midway ISD is stronger together

M

idway ISD’s theme for this school year is “Strong Together,” as we celebrate being together again! Our staff reacted swiftly and valiantly to the pandemic shutdown last spring, but one thing I think we all learned from that experience was how connected we are in our community. We all grieved for the loss of face-to-face instruction and interaction that our students and teachers experienced last spring. So although the day-to-day functions of our campuses may look a little different with masks, hand sanitizer, and physical distancing, we are thrilled to be back in school together. According to Midway ISD Superintendent George Kazanas, these are just some of the items that were accomplished within the first two weeks of the school year: • Deployed 9,257 iPads • Held 4,766 Google Meets (virtual meetings) with 42,662 participants • Launched Midway Virtual School serving 2,825 students (approximately 34% of the student body) in remote learning • Handled eight COVID-19 cases, including contact tracing and quarantines • Passed a lower tax rate of $1.2364 / $100 valuation (was $1.25 last year) • Refinanced Series 2013 bonds from a 4.47% interest rate to 1.30% to save $1,984,475 in interest payments over the remaining life of the bonds • Established Girls’ STEM Club and district-wide STEM night for all 5th & 6th graders with $20,000 grant awarded to Woodgate Intermediate by the Midway Education Foundation & Howmet Aerospace • Reimbursed 22 first-year teachers $150 from the Midway Education Foundation to help establish their first classroom • Implemented staggered start times and bus safety protocols with 64 bus routes and 1,250 bus riders • Coordinated with internet providers for assistance programs to families in need of broadband service • Supported staff members with stress counseling and collaborated with faith-based partners for ongoing check-ins • Designated district-owned land on Ritchie Road for construction of newest elementary campus, with preliminary plans designed and approved • Finalized architectural plans and reviewed quality control plan for Career & Technical Education

addition at Midway High School for November groundbreaking • Finalized architectural plans and reviewed quality control plan for River Valley Intermediate for conversion to new middle school with February groundbreaking • Established Midway Education Foundation grant program for $100 reimbursements to cover teachers’ personal expenditures for new classroom items due to COVID-19 • Opened meal pick-up site for virtual students • Reconfigured school cafeteria layouts and schedules while still able to serve a variety of healthy and fresh foods in a safe manner We know we will face challenges this year, but we are off to a great start. We are grateful for the support of our community as we all work together to give our students the richest educational experience possible this year. Get to know your MISD teachers JANA WILTON • WOODWAY ELEMENTARY Jana Wilton is a second grade teacher with 18 years of educational experience—recently completing her 11th year with Midway I.S.D. One of Jana’s favorite traditions in the classroom is completing the random acts of kindness challenge. This allows students the opportunity to facilitate and experience firsthand the impact of paying it forward. To date, students have successfully set up clothes drives, gathered items for local food pantries, collected and distributed items to area animal shelters, and volunteered their time. Jana also enjoys volunteering with the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, as well as mentoring current and former students, educators, and families. ANGELA SCARBOROUGH HEWITT ELEMENTARY Angela’s greatest joy is teaching our youth. She has been a Special Education teacher for 23 years, with 15 of those years at Hewitt Elementary. She is married with two children. One attends Sam Houston State University and the other attends Texas A&M University (WHOOP!). Her hobbies are looking for ideas on Pinterest, reading about our country’s history, gardening, and repurposing furniture. She enjoys meeting school families through the Hewitt PTA and feels that stronger bonds are made through working together.

Remain strong because all things will pass... (even Covid-19) CHARLIE TURNER • MAYOR, CITY OF HEWITT

F

rom kindergarten to high school graduation, each grade level presents its own problems—the difficulty measured by which grade level you happen to be in. Generation upon generation has passed through school halls to meet a new world in which their life’s course is to be determined. For example, my grandfather had to deal with World War I and the ongoing problems brought about with a world at war. His training at Camp MacArthur in Waco prepared him to be deployed in France as a lineman soldier serving in communications. The tasks at hand placed him on a battlefield up on a line pole stretching communication wire as mustard gas exploded upon the ground beneath his pole. As he worked to pull wire, his pliers slipped from his hand and fell to the ground— engulfed by mustard gas. Not wanting to stay in the area any longer than necessary, he pulled the wire taut and performed the securing twists as he bit the wire into separate pieces. This decision not to retrieve his pliers later resulted in a diagnosis of cancer, which disfigured the corner of his mouth. The life-changing event would not have been his first choice, but it was his duty to serve his country. In his senior year after graduation, my father and other classmates joined the military to protect and serve our country during World War II. Once again involved in the Vietnam War, my generation had what was known as the “hippie movement” that created unrest on the home front, as opposed to dealing only with problems found on the other side of the world. Every year there are spokesmen preparing their speeches, words of encouragement, mementos given as reminders to remain positive, and problems both large and small that must be resolved. As a new school year begins, remnants of the past graduating class and the obstacles that existed at the time of their graduation dictate a mandate of extra precautionary measures which must be observed. Those living today cannot recall a time in current history that completely involved everything in daily life. Celebration parties, proms, ceremonies, commencement programs and old friend gatherings must reflect and adhere to the new norm of today. Graduation events invite a guest speaker who has lived a great portion of life and learned a lifetime lesson that is universal to all who live and

breathe. The speaker begins by explaining existing problems, then discusses all of the challenges necessary to meet trial and error, on-the-job training, research and collaboration with others to arrive at a solution that is worthy to be shared and applied to others’ lives. To current high school seniors, remember this: the object of a diploma is to show your accomplishment. The last year usually is more socially interactive because after graduation. friends go their own way into life. Some friends remain with you for a lifetime. I know this for a fact because I have such a best friend from second grade to present day. Do not let today’s circumstances destroy your joy, but live for those lifetime friendships. God is preparing us all for a new way we will walk through this

life. Keep this in your heart: God does not remove what we perceive as problems so that His strength is known in His life. Instead we have a loving father who provides through faith the strength we need to overcome and endure adversities with His strength in our lives. There are only two ways to solve any problem— proactively or reactively. A proactive attitude will sustain someone for a lifetime to show the world how strong young people can be when faced with an overwhelming and challenging problem. A reactive attitude will pass it all by with the cry “Woe is me!” Go forth and enjoy your senior year as God’s blessings prepare you for your future life. The world will test your mettle, but God will sharpen your will. Let the edge of your sword of faith prove to the world that your mettle can endure a lifetime.
