ewitt will celebrate Earth Day on April 22. In honor of the occasion, here’s tips for eco-friendly living (that will save you $$ in the process)!
Switch to Bar Soap Many have switched to liquid soap and body wash, believing that bars of soap allow germs to spread easier, but studies show that’s just not the case. By switching to bar soap, you’ll cut down on the packaging sent to landfills, you’ll use less water (bars create less suds than liquids) and best of all, you’ll save money! AOL Finance found that the cost per wash using a bar of soap is $0.012 per wash versus $0.17 per wash using body wash. Ditch Bottled Water You have probably heard that we drink a staggering amount of bottled water (50 billion bottles in America each year!), but you may not know
that it takes triple the water that’s in the bottle to manufacture it. By purchasing a water filter pitcher (you can purchase a Brita for $20) and a reusable bottle (Nalgene bottles are around $10 each), you will get good, clean water that tastes great and you’ll be getting it for much less than it costs to buy the same amount in bottled water. Cut Down Shower Time The average shower lasts eight minutes, which equals about 18 gallons of water. According to the EPA, “If each person reduced his or her shower time by one minute, we could save a combined 165 billion gallons each year.” Try shortening your shower time by setting a timer on your smart phone before you step in. Cook Meals at Home By planning out your menu before heading to the grocery store, you’ll cut down on throwing away unused food. You can also choose a day to cook Continued on page 5...

Say Yes to saying “No” LAURA BEATY
A
study last year found that more Americans are suffering from stress and anxiety now than ever before, and a quick glance at our calendars might explain why. Deadlines, projects and social commitments pile up fast, and from all directions. But a little two-letter word can give you time back to focus on what really matters to you while protecting you from getting burned out and resentful. Keep reading for seven simple ways to say no. ONE Think extremes: “Heck, yes!” or “Heck, no!” You should be so excited and thrilled that everything in you says a resounding “Yes!” If you can’t give a strong yes, then you probably need to say no. TWO Don’t elaborate. Let your “No” be your no. Don’t feel the need to offer an excuse. A simple, “Thank you for thinking of me, but I’m afraid I can’t” is polite, honest and sufficient. THREE Don’t waver. Some people aren’t used to hearing no, but their persistence doesn’t earn them a yes from you. Stay strong, smile and say no as many times as you need to. FOUR Know the stakes. There is a cost to saying yes when you want to say no in that you often end up sacrificing spending time, money and/or energy on the things that mean the most to you. Recognizing what is truly at stake can make it easier to say no. FIVE Meet them halfway. For some situations, negotiating may be appropriate. Maybe you can’t take on the project by yourself, but can make it work if the deadline is extended or if you can split the project with two peers (or both!).

A fourth-grader at Woodway Elementary, Cailyn has won awards for the HOT Rodeo Spelling Bee, as well as UIL awards for ready writing and music memory. Cailyn enjoys the Seventh and James Baptist Church Music Camp, playing softball and volleyball, arts, crafts, reading, playing with friends and helping teachers after school. Kaitlin has a black belt in karate, received a perfect score in UIL music memory and consistently makes the A/B Honor Roll, in addition to receiving an exemplary score on the 3rd grade Math and Reading STAAR Test. At the age of 9, Vihaan Sibal is already breaking records and making headlines by becoming the youngest winner of the Central Texas Spelling Bee. Son of Shruti and Aman Sibal, Vihaan also won the 2017 Heart of Texas Math Bee and read one million words in 2nd grade. Vihaan enjoys playing tennis and soccer, swimming, playing piano and spending time playing outside with friends.

Layla’s heart for service is well-known as the winner of the Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy award for 2016-2017 and a member of the campus Kindness and Compassion Club. Daughter of Nancy and Larry Garcia, Layla is a Brownie in Girl Scouts, dances with Joy’s School of Dance and plays softball with Midway Little League. Outside of school, she raises money for the Alzheimer’s Association with her best friend by selling lemonade and flowers. A fourth-grader at Speegleville, Kaila is a multi-year competitor and winner in UIL contests and has won the Speegleville Principal Award, Citizenship Award, Panther Pride Award and Coach for the Day on campus. She enjoys singing in chorus, playing softball and basketball, swimming, dancing, baking, travleing and creative arts in her studio by experimenting with multi-colored/textured “slime” and creating homemade toys. She also loves caring for her dogs, Tommy and Trojan, and her California rabbit named Charlotte Rose. Proud parents are Jenny and Ramil Ignacio.

Daughter of Kelly and Jeremy McCarver, Hannah is a straight-A student who consistently displays leadership, kindness and compassion on campus. Outside of school, Hannah is involved with mission trips at her church, enjoys playing volleyball and cheers on her brother at his games.

Mary Elizabeth Barnhill, known by her friends as Mary Beth, is a great example of a well-rounded student. Daughter of Byron and Elizabeth, Mary Beth is a member of the National Junior Honors Society, PALs and the National Charity League. She enjoys singing in the Panther Chorale at school, and off-campus, Mary Beth spends her time babysitting, dancing and teaching children’s bible classes at Crestview Church of Christ where she’s a member of the youth group. Overall, she’s a great ambassador for the school.

Jim Carpenter’s stroke left him literally speechless as well as unable to walk unassisted. “I had to learn to talk and walk all over again.” He spent the next five weeks in inpatient rehab working with his team of therapists. With speech, physical and occupational therapy sessions every day, he improved rapidly, continuing to make steady progress after transitioning to outpatient therapy. “I love my therapists. They got me going, and they keep me going.” Jim returned to his construction management job part time, while attending rehab sessions twice a week. “I’m not back to where I was yet, but with this team, I know I’ll get there.”

Hewitt Lions Share the Vision Thanks to a generous grant from the Heavin Foundation, the Hewitt Lions Club screened 998 people in the greater Hewitt area in 2017 using the SPOT Vision Machine, with 20.4% referred to a doctor for vision issues. In order to coordinate even more outreach efforts, the Hewitt Lions Club is partnering with the Robinson Area Lions Club and Waco Women’s Lions Club to provide additional screenings throughout the year at public and private schools, churches and community events in Central Texas. A runner with a message JARED DEVRIES, Hewitt Community Development Coordinator
D
uring the fall of 2017, I had the opportunity to become acquainted with Jerry Snider. Jerry is an active Hewitt resident, owner of All In Health and Wellness, a Greater Hewitt Chamber member, and member of the Hewitt Parks and Beautification Committee. His idea to raise money for entrepreneurial literature at the Hewitt Public Library inspired him to run every street in the city of Hewitt (approximately 79 miles)! It is his continuous passion and energy that drives him to inspire others to do their best. “Jerry’s Section” in the library offers the business and entrepreneurship books that were purchased through his initiative. Last month, I had the chance to interview him about fitness and wellness in the context of goal-setting. We discussed how our wonderful Warren and Hewitt parks, and amenities like the Hewitt Public Library help foster strong community relationships and encourage healthy living. I inquired about his motivation, his ability to stay focused, and where he finds his encouragement to keep his eyes on the prize. There are two things that keep Jerry motivated toward his goals: 1) Setting the right goal 2) Establishing an effective and realistic time frame
He says that purpose is critical when it comes to setting the right goal because it “identifies what is valuable.” Identifying goals that elevate a personal and critical aspect of the self is essential. Jerry described timing like “establishing a date for a vacation.” Jerry stressed that “If you want to go somewhere, but don’t set a date of departure, you’re not going anywhere.” Effective time frames for goals give wings to lofty and realistic aspirations. When it comes to dealing with distractions and detractions, Jerry knows that there “always will be [distractions].” He says that writing goals down and reviewing them continually will “Provide feedback and evidence of progress.” “There were days where it rained (during the “All In With Jerry” library initiative), there were days where loose dogs were on the street, so there are definitely distractions. Feedback and response to distractions are critical,” Jerry shared. Jerry finds his best encouragement from his family and his faith. “I am constantly inspired by my community and the people I surround myself with,” he said. He discussed the importance of volunteerism, and how communities are vital to the health of the individual. He also finds encouragement through his wife, his two children and his dog, a Weimaraner named Buddy.
