Y

ear after year, the little girl would lean in, close her eyes tightly, scrunch up her little fists and blow the candles out with all her might...hoping that this was the year her birthday wish would come true, the year she would get a dog! Alas, year after year, she settled for playing with her friends’ pets, until finally, after waiting for what seemed an eternity, her wish came true. The dog, a snow-loving Norwegian Elkhound named Berga, meant the world to the little eight-year-old girl. But then again, she fell in love with every animal she ever met. So to say that being a fierce lover of animals is second nature to Dr. Kristin Dodson would be an understatement. After the dog came a horse, a pet rat, a family of salamanders that lived on the porch—with each passing year and each new animal to care for, it became more and more obvious to the young girl that she was destined to become a veterinarian. After graduating from a small high school in upstate New York, Kristin moved to Waco in 1995 to attend Baylor University. It was during college that she met the man she would marry—Mike Dodson, then a pre-med student who would go on to play in the David Crowder Band and The Digital Age, both popular Christian rock groups. The two married in the spring of 2000. Taking a year off to get her Texas residency, Kristin worked two jobs before attending Texas A&M University. After obtaining her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine, the Dodsons moved to Chicago where Kristin completed a rotating medical surgical internship for one year, which allowed her to train with a number of specialists and gain more experience with emergency medicine. But for the couple, Texas was already home. In 2005, the Dodsons moved back to Texas, and Dr. Dodson found her home at Hewitt Veterinary Hospital,

a clinic started by Dr. Layne Gregory in 1983. Dr. Dodson, who became the owner of the practice in 2016, and Mike, who now serves as the Hospital Director, credit Dr. Gregory with building an exemplary practice with a team committed to client education through good communication and to making people feel valued through building genuine relationships. The team’s focus on positivity and relationship-building remains important both with clients and within the staff. “Health is our top priority, from the animals we see to our organization,” said Mike Dodson, “You can have such a big impact by being positive, and we give employees tools to communicate and be positive when life gets stressful.” Having a highly trained and caring staff means that the team can see some tough cases, including pulling together and working through lunch or after hours to save an animal, even when chances seem slim. With such a high-stakes workload at times, the Dodsons recognize the importance of stress relief and positivity. “Our team all played bingo together at Christmas, and everyone had so much fun,” said Mike, “We’ve also all gone to the movies together, and it’s important for us that Kristin and I be a voice of support at all times, letting people know that even on tough days to just pick up and keep trying our best.” This commitment to health and positivity has allowed Hewitt Veterinary Hospital to see tremendous growth, and the Dodsons are in the early stages of considering expansion. “The Hewitt area is really growing, and we need to strategically grow with it. That means figuring out the needs of the community and asking questions,” said Mike Dodson, “What are people driving to Austin or Dallas for in terms of veterinary medicine? We’re striving to provide that level of care from state-of-the-art medical equipment to high-quality veterinary care.” Hewitt Veterinary Hospital, under the Dodsons’s guidance, is meeting those community needs—from providing a variety of emergency surgery and veterinary dentistry to offering standard check-ups and monthly wellness clinics. Growing a thriving veterinary practice is a challenge the couple is excited to face together, but in their free time, the Dodsons enjoy traveling, especially to the British Virgin Islands, and being active members of University Baptist Church. Music remains a big part of Mike’s life, and Kristin stays busy as a member of several book clubs. She also spends as much time as she can with her horse, Tiny, and the couple’s four dogs. “My passion is caring for both animals and people,” said Dr. Dodson. “Pets provide unconditional love, so to be able to protect that bond by providing care and preventing disease is just amazing to me.”

Hewitt Chamber wins first place in statewide media contest T

he Greater Hewitt Chamber was awarded first place in its category for its annual community guide and directory in the 2017 Texas Chamber of Commerce Executives Annual Media Contest. This is the second year in a row for the Chamber to win first place for the directory. “We are thrilled for our annual directory to receive this recognition,” said Alissa Cady, executive director of the Greater Hewitt Chamber. “Our volunteers and staff work hard to promote the greater Hewitt area throughout the year, and our directory is just one of several ways we strive to serve our business members and community.” Chambers from across the state compete in the annual contest every June in a variety of media categories including brochures, maps, newsletters, websites, directories, marketing campaigns and social media campaigns. The contest has four size categories to ensure that organizations compete against comparablysized chambers. The greater Hewitt area has seen a tremendous amount of growth in recent years, and the Greater Hewitt Chamber’s marketing efforts reflect that growth. “In addition to the directory, we also have a quarterly magazine called the Hewitt Express, and we’ve more than doubled our circulation per issue due to demand,” said Cady. Digital versions of the Greater Hewitt Chamber publications can be found online at www.HewittChamber.com/Print, while print copies are distributed at restaurants, banks, clinics and hotels in the Hewitt and Woodway area, as well as at the Greater Hewitt Chamber office located at 101 Third Street in Hewitt.

The directory and quarterly magazines are also mailed directly to Greater Hewitt Chamber members, and are given to new residents moving into the Hewitt area. Readers throughout the state can find copies at visitor centers along the Interstate-35 corridor. The Texas Chamber of Commerce Executive Association—founded in 1908—is the professional society of chamber of commerce executives, professional staff and affiliated members in the state of Texas.

Hewitt: A city on the grow by Adam Miles, Hewitt City Manager

H

ewitt is a city of choice in McLennan County, with people choosing to live in Hewitt for many reasons. Someone wanting to relocate here has many options

for a place to live, with more on the way. Builders and developers are working hard to bring new homes, duplexes and even apartments to the market.

The Sunflower Ridge subdivision is located at Old Temple Road and Spring Valley Boulevard. The model home for this single-family residential subdivision is under construction right now. Soon, homebuyers will see several other new John Houston homes under construction there.

The later phases of Stone Ridge are also under construction now. John Houston Homes is busy building new homes in this subdivision located off of South Old Temple Road.

We are now seeing the final phase of the Collier Addition near completion, located off of Spring Valley Boulevard. New homes on Lost Maples Court are under construction as well. These new homes are considered “garden” or “patio” homes. They offer large homes on smaller lots for those wanting less yard maintenance.

Right now, The Icon at Hewitt is under construction. Hewitt’s first new apartment complex in over 20 years— located at Hewitt Drive and Ritchie Road across the street from the Hewitt Public Library—will boast 256 one- and two-bedroom units. The facility is being marketed as a luxury apartment complex, and is on track to be occupied in early 2018. Look for more information on The Icon in coming months.

Very soon, the Reserve at Dry Creek is slated to begin construction on Bagby, near Commerce Park. This is an age 62 and older senior citizen apartment complex designed to provide a highvalue housing option for seniors wanting to downsize or relocate to Hewitt. The facility will offer 88 units, with one- and two-bedroom options. Continued on next page...

Hewitt is receiving attention from other de-

velopers as well. There are a few large residential parcels currently on the market, with preliminary engineering already taking place. You will also see many new lots just outside Hewitt’s city limits under development. In addition, there is new interest in “infill” development (and even redevelopment) around our city.

As demand for homes in Hewitt has increased,

we have also witnessed increasing land values. We are beginning to see developers and engineers become more and more creative in how land can be used. This new interest in older parts of Hewitt will create changes and challenges moving forward.

Many people have asked about commercial

development in Hewitt. The big story in the past few months has been the new Walmart, located in Commerce Park right off I-35. Clearly, this major retail anchor has spurned interest and activity in our city. After Walmart’s opening earlier this year, we have received several inquiries about other plans in the immediate area. ne out of every seven patients in hospitals is in need of a blood transfusion. There is no substitute for human blood. Carter BloodCare is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that operates on behalf of patients in 50-plus Texas counties—14 of those in Central Texas. With the support of volunteer blood donors, Carter BloodCare is the primary provider of blood and transfusion services to more than 13 hospitals and healthcare facilities in Central Texas, including Providence, Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest and Olin E. Teague Veteran’s Medical Center. The blood center is licensed by the Food and Drug Administration, accredited by AABB, and is a member of America’s Blood Centers. As your community blood center, Carter BloodCare understands the importance of maintaining a steady community blood supply. Hosting a blood drive allows your employees and the community to participate in one part of saving the lives of patients at our local hospitals. Each unit collected at your drive can save three lives. Without consistent donations coming in, there is no way to provide life-saving blood transfusions, so every donation counts. Are you ready to #GiveForLife? We are asking local businesses, churches and organizations to give life to our community by hosting a blood drive. Your support will make a difference by giving someone’s loved one a chance to enjoy that next special life moment. Visit www.carterbloodcare.org/ givelife to see the stories of inspiration from a blood donor or a recipient. To schedule a blood drive and impact countless lives all over our community, call Clinton McCoy at (254) 366-9822 or Vickie Carpenter at (254) 855-7244. To learn more about Carter BloodCare, or to find a donor center near you, visit www.carterbloodcare.org.

henever a Lions Club gets together, problems get smaller and communities get better. That’s because we help where help is needed—in our own communities and around the world—with unmatched integrity and energy. When it comes to meeting challenges, our response is simple: We Serve. In 205 countries, in hospitals and senior centers, in regions battered by natural disasters, in schools and in eyeglass recycling centers, Lions are at work—helping, leading, planning and supporting. Because we’re local, we can serve the unique needs of the communities where we live. And because we’re global, we can address challenges that go beyond borders. The Hewitt Lions Club was founded in 1982, and we’ve been serving the greater Hewitt area since that time through awarding scholarships to local students, partnering with other local organizations like Caritas and Habitat for Humanity on service projects, and enabling students with special needs to attend a week-long summer camp at Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville at no cost to the camper’s family. In 2017, we’ve been fortunate to purchase a Welch-Allyn SPOT vision screening device—a handheld portable device used to quickly and easily detect vision issues on persons from 6 months of age through adults. Our club's goal is to ultimately provide free annual vision screenings for each student in Midway ISD. We are always seeking like-minded folks to join in our efforts to serve the community. If you have a heart for service, we need you! With seven different membership types, we have something for everyone—from those with a little extra time on their hands to those with a jam-packed calendar. Visit HewittLionsClub.org for membership types and an application to join.
