T

he journey to becoming a veterinarian was not an easy one for Layne Gregory. Losing both parents abruptly at a young age, Gregory had a realization that inspired him to go back to school after initially majoring in business. “I remember thinking that you never know when your time will come,” said Gregory. “I knew I needed to be doing something that I believe in and that means something, both to me and others. I always knew I would like to be a veterinarian, but I didn’t think I could manage the difficult curriculum in a College Of Veterinary Medicine. I decided to change that negative thinking.” His love of animals gave him a new focus, and he worked hard to see his vision of becoming a vet come to fruition. “I worked 60 hours a week for a veterinarian in Paris, Texas while in school, and I spent hours and hours studying in College Station to get the grades I needed,” said Gregory. That determination paid off. He was accepted into the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M in 1979. On May 11, 1983, Gregory—a new, young doctor— made the biggest (and scariest) decision of his life: opening his own clinic, the Hewitt Veterinary Hospital. “I turned the key that morning and walked into an empty building,” said Gregory. “I was alone and I just started sweeping, hoping the phone would ring. It did! And it hasn’t stopped.” The original Hewitt Veterinary Hospital was small, with one exam room and one surgery room. Located on Hewitt Drive, the clinic was not far from where Hewitt Veterinary Hospital currently resides at 101 Panther Way. Today, the clinic has four veterinarians, nine veterinary technicians, two kennel staff, four receptionists, a hospital manager and a business-financial manager. “We probably see at least 70 patients a day,” said Lois Reasoner, Hospital Manager. Patients are limited to dogs and cats only. Services provided are just as varied as the pets the clinic sees—from wellness exams, spaying, neutering, microchipping and dental therapy, to behavioral counseling, pain management and prescription diet planning, to in-house diagnostics, surgery and specialist referrals. The hospital also works closely with local animal shelters and rescue/adoption centers. Hewitt Veterinary Hospital focuses on both the four-legged patient, as well as the patient’s owner. Having a large collaborative referral network of veterinary specialists—all within 90 miles of Waco—ensures that complex cases requiring more specialized treatment will receive the absolute best care available, providing clients with peace of mind. “I’ll never forget a dog that came in with a swollen eye,” said Dr. Gregory. “It turned out to be cancer of the skull, which is usually terminal. Incredibly, the specialist

HEWITT CHAMBER EXPRESS • 9

was able to remove the cancer and cure the dog. One eye had to be removed to extricate the cancerous bone, but the dog later went home happy and healthy.” Unfortunately, not every visit has a happy ending. To deal with the emotional toll of losing a patient, the team at Hewitt Veterinary Hospital “Counts the wins,” said Reasoner. “We get very attached to our patients and their owners, and it can be hard to balance,” said Reasoner. “Loss is part of veterinary medicine, but we know we’re doing everything we can to take care of the patient and owner.” Dr. Gregory agrees. “We built the practice by focusing on the fact that every animal comes with a person, and it’s very important to us that we focus on both.” Gregory’s love of animals has led to a passion for wildlife photography. His subjects have included turkeys in his front yard, bald eagles in Waco, elk in Colorado and bears in Alaska. “He could be a National Geographic photographer,” said Reasoner. “All of the photos of animals in our lobby are shots he has taken.”

After 33 years at Hewitt Veterinary Hospital, Dr. Gregory will cut his hours to three days a week and looks forward to spending more time traveling and enjoying nature. When asked about his legacy, Dr. Gregory says he feels good about developing a high-quality small animal veterinary hospital serving greater Hewitt. He is proud of his staff— all competent, compassionate, dedicated associates with guiding principles based on honesty, integrity and dedication to pet health and communication with clients. “I would like to thank all the fine people I have been blessed to work with over the years, because they all played a huge part in helping me develop this hospital into what it is today,” said Dr. Gregory. “I would also like to thank my wife and best friend, Donna for her support during the stressful years of veterinary school and the years that followed, and for her invaluable contribution to Hewitt Veterinary Hospital as our business-financial manager. Thanks, too to our many clients—past, present, and future—for entrusting us with their pets’ health care.”

Conserve water & save money with these efficient lawn-watering tips! For any small area of grass, water by hand. On slopes, try a soaker hose to help prevent wasteful run-off. Adjust your mower to a higher setting. Grass blades grow longer and shade one another, helping to fight heat and hold moisture. Don’t water your lawn too much. A sprinkler at the end of a hose needs your attention. Buy timer attachments or set a kitchen timer to ring in 15-20 minutes to remind you to move the sprinkler. Adjust lawn watering to the weather. After a heavy rain, skip your regular watering day until the grass needs it again. Teach your family how to turn off an automatic sprinkler system in case a storm comes up during the sprinkler cycle. When you walk on your lawn, do you leave footprints behind? That a sign that the grass needs water. It’s too dry to spring back when you walk on it. Another sign is grass that turns a dull gray-green color. Give that off-color grass a good drink.

Additional Water Conservation Tips • Take shorter showers • Turn off the faucet while brushing teeth • Run the dishwasher and washing machine with full loads only • Use control nozzles to wash your car, so water won’t run continuously • Fix leaks inside and outside the house

SUMMERTIME PESTS ARE HERE! With the late Spring rains, many pests are carrying over into Summer. One of those pesky pests is the mosquito. Mosquitoes should be taken seriously, as they carry many diseases! As you have probably heard, the Zika virus has shown up in the United States, but in all cases, the person contracted the disease when visiting a Carribean country, Central America or South America. It will eventually be spread by mosquitoes in the United States. In a few cases, Zika can trigger paralysis (GuillainBarré syndrome). In pregnant women, it may cause subsequent birth defects. In most cases, a person will have symptoms that are mild and last less than a week. They may include fever, joint pain, rash and red eyes. Several control measures can be incorporated. We find that the misting systems are more expensive to install and maintain than having a company do periodic sprayings of your yard. A monthly spray program can be as effective and cost much less. Plus, beneficial insects, such as bees, butterflies and non-target insects, tend to be harmed more with mist systems because of the daily misting of the insecticides. Monthly spraying with a mist blower will place the insecticide under the leaves where mosquitoes tend to rest during the day, thus allowing them to easily get a lethal dose of the insecticide. A good professional pest control operator can periodically inspect your yard to correct other issues that may be contributing to the population without having to incorporate more insecticides. Summer is backyard time! Don’t be bitten! Call us at (254) 666-3439 for a free quote for either a one-time treatment or our monthly program.

WHAT IS “RANSOMWARE”? SHOULD YOU BE CONCERNED? Ransomware is a class of malware infection that is rapidly becoming the most common way cybercriminals attempt to “con” money from infected users. Recent forms of ransomware “encrypt” or lock access to an infected device’s files. Commonly the files locked include Word documents, spreadsheets, pictures, databases and others. It can also encrypt files on your servers. Once a device is infected, it is virtually impossible to access these files without a “key” from the hackers. Typically, a screen displays on the infected device listing a website link in order to pay a “ransom” and regain access to your files. This ransom varies from $200 to $10,000—and even if you pay the ransom, there is no guarantee the key you’re sent will work! Concerned? You should be. One hacker group generated $325 million in revenue in one year alone from ransomware! These infections generally gain access to your devices via an infected website or email attachment. WB Computer Services’ technicians have extensive experience in helping companies protect their data from this and other threats. Call Wayne Bonner at 254-523-4161 or email info@wbcservices.com today to discuss how we can assist. WBCS can serve all of your technology needs.

Give an outstanding employee a three-day weekend. Send a birthday card to an employee at home. Acknowledge an employee’s achievements by using their name on status reports. Name a continuing recognition award after an outstanding employee. Wash the employee’s car in the parking lot. Encourage your employees by challenging them. True professionals like to be challenged. Furnish the best tools so that employees can accomplish their tasks. Call JOAT at (254) 754-7997 today for your human resource needs. We’re here to help.
