Shawna Bradfute
2025 Greater Hewitt Chamber President Edward Jones Investments
Founded in the late 1800s, Hewitt has grown from a small farming community to a city full of loyal residents and growing businesses. This city has proven to be a place where people can cultivate families, build businesses, create jobs, retire (and even vacation). Whatever season of life someone is in, Hewitt has something for everyone.
The Greater Hewitt Chamber of Commerce has much to do with the city’s success, as well as the success of surrounding areas. GHCoC’s amazing staff, members and faithful volunteers do a superb job of providing residents and businesses of Hewitt with all the information needed to make this wonderful city their home. We offer signature events throughout the year that focus on bringing our community together for fun, faith and communitybuilding. We strive to provide valuable resources to business owners to help facilitate their success. We make sure the greater Hewitt area—and surrounding cities—are well-informed of networking opportunities and business-building education meetings. The Chamber also provides various advertising opportunities for local businesses.
GHCoC staff, directors and volunteers are privileged to give back to the community by serving several local organizations, including Christian Women’s Job Corps, Shepherd’s Heart Food Pantry, Hunger Free Midway ISD, Midway ISD Education Foundation, Hewitt Lion’s Club, Kiwanis Club and Caritas of Waco, just to name a few.
Looking in the rearview mirror, 2024 was a very tumultuous year, as we have seen such an impact to the City of Hewitt and surrounding cities. Hewitt has become a hub for thriving international companies wanting to establish their headquarters alongside our local businesses to make our unique community their home. Hewitt residents and businesses continue to grow this wonderful community through love and faith with a servant’s heart. As we embrace a new year, those of us in the Chamber will continue to offer an abundance of benefits to our members, as well as opportunities to rally together, help business owners grow and maintain success, and support each other—all while continuing to have a fun and inclusive environment.

Why join the Chamber?
The Age of Loneliness
BY MATTHEW GLASER, DIRECTOR, HEWITT PUBLIC LIBRARY
In May 2023, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy released an advisory report on the loneliness epidemic affecting millions of Americans. Loneliness has become an increasingly concerning public health issue over the last decade, even before it was exacerbated by the COVID-19 crisis. Loneliness is equated to smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and is estimated to affect heart health, vulnerability to strokes, and dementia risks.
The human brain thrives on connection. From early childhood, socialization teaches us the rhythm of communication—the give-and-take of conversation, the nuances of body language, and the foundations of empathy. Parents are encouraged to engage their children in constant dialogue, fostering essential skills of interaction that remain vital throughout life. Yet as we grow older, these connections can gray and become dim, leaving many isolated in a world brimming with superficial connections.
The irony in this loneliness epidemic is that the world is more connected than ever with fastpaced development of technology, social media, and other Internet-based services. While technology and the Internet are not the enemy in the battle for social connection, we do need to be aware of the balance between our online connections and our in-person connections. Loneliness stems from the quality of relationships, not quantity.
of the library’s mission to offer recreation and information to the general public, have the added benefit of bringing people together and offering a chance to connect on a deeper level.
Events like Howard County (Maryland) Library System’s “The Longest Table” create opportunities for neighbors to share meals and stories, fostering deeper relationships. Similarly, Floyd Memorial (New York) Library’s “Yarnstorming” project invited participants to collaborate on a colorful public art installation, blending creativity with community engagement.
Dr. Murthy outlines a whole-of-society approach that underscores six pillars of a framework to advance social connection. The first is social infrastructure, which “refers to the programs, policies, and physical elements of a community that facilitate bringing people together.” Physical elements include parks, playgrounds, and of course, libraries. Libraries combat loneliness by becoming centers of human connection.
Libraries offer far more than just books. They provide spaces for meaningful encounters, programming that bridges divides, and a welcoming environment where all are free to belong. Libraries frequently partner with local organizations to offer presentations, workshops, and activities for all ages. These activities, while part
Even casual interactions (what sociologists call “weak ties”) can combat loneliness. Libraries create these moments effortlessly—a shared smile during a workshop, a chat in the checkout line, or a friendly exchange during storytime. Such interactions may seem small, but collectively, they form an invaluable safety net of belonging.
Libraries provide the perfect setting for meaningful engagement—attend a local workshop, join a book club, or simply start a conversation with a fellow visitor. These small intentional acts of connection not only enhance personal well-being, but also strengthen the community fabric.
As Dr. Murthy’s report reminds us, loneliness is a collective issue requiring a collective response. By actively participating in community life, using resources like libraries, and prioritizing human connections in daily interactions, we can create a stronger, more connected society—one conversation, one interaction, and one community at a time.
