HOPIN "HOW TO" What Is Hopin? Hopin is a virtual events platform where attendees can learn, interact, and connect with others. You can network with other event attendees through chat windows and 1-on-1 video conversations, visit the Main Stage for event-related announcements, watch speaker presentations and panel discussions in the Sessions area, and live video chat with exhibitors in the Expo. Several areas of the platform use your video and audio, so please be prepared to have them on. Some event content is also imported in from YouTube, so please make sure you don’t have any firewalls that prevent you from accessing the full event. KEYNOTE SPEAKERS Robin Bains, Senior Manager, Manufacturing Strategy and Smart Operations Deloitte Robin Bains is a Leader in Deloitte’s Manufacturing Strategy & Smart Operations consulting practice. Robin has over 20 years of industry and consulting experience developing strategy and delivering large scale programs in digital, data analytics, Internet of Things (IoT) and Enterprise Architecture across multiple industries. He has extensive experience serving clients, including for technology strategy and architecture, digital transformation innovation management, technology experimentation studies and pilots. Robin leads Deloitte Canada’s Industrial IoT / Smart Factory Practice, and helps clients unlock value across the end-to-end digital valuechain from sensors endpoints to advanced analytics insights. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Engineering Physics) from McMaster University and an MBA (Management Consulting, Investment Banking) from the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto.

Pierre Cléroux, Vice President, Research and Chief Economist BDC Pierre Cléroux was appointed Vice President, Research and Chief Economist at BDC in 2012. Pierre leads a team of experts, analyzing economic data to identify business and sector trends impacting Canadian entrepreneurs. Over his 25year career as an economist, he has held several influential positions. Pierre has worked for the Government of Saudi Arabia as Vice President, Business Analysis in the National Industry Clusters Development Program, as the Quebec Assistant Deputy Minister for Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade, responsible for economic policies and programs to support small and medium-sized businesses, and for 12 years at the Canadian Federation of Independent Business in various roles, including economist and Quebec Vice President. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and a master’s degree in Economics from Laval University, as well as an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management.

MODERATORS Tony LaMantia, President & CEO Waterloo EDC A University of Waterloo alumnus, Tony had ties to the community for decades before helping to found Waterloo EDC as the organization’s inaugural leader in 2016. A community builder at heart, he relishes the opportunity to work with businesses, civic leaders, governments and organizations to help build a strong, sustainable economy for the people of Waterloo Region. Tony is the Past Chair of the Business and Economic Support Team for Waterloo Region (BESTWR), the partnership created to advocate on behalf of the local business community during the COVID-19 crisis, and is currently a member of its leadership team. A passionate leader, his career has spanned the public, private and nonprofit sectors with executive roles in investment marketing, technology sales & mining, as well as the Province of Ontario as Assistant Deputy Minister of Investment and Industry.

Kenda Allen, Vice President, Commercial Banking South Central Ontario TD Bank Kenda Allen is Vice President Commercial Banking South Central Ontario for TD Bank covering the Waterloo Region as well as the Guelph and Stratford markets. She has 30 plus years of management and financial experience having held various positions in commercial banking throughout Ontario and in the lower mainland of BC. She has engaged and supported the communities where she has worked by volunteering her time with a number of organizations and held board positions including Grand River Hospital Foundation, Guelph and Abbotsford Chambers of Commerce, Restorative Justice, Rotary, and amateur sports events. She returned to the area in December 2016 and is proud to live and work in the Waterloo Region.

MODERATORS Alex Bilik, Business Development Manager, Commercial Insurance Cowan Insurance Group As Business Development Manager, Commercial Insurance, Alex provides expert advice on the facets of risks across specific industries and helps commercial clients identify, understand and mitigate their loss exposure. Alex has over 25 years’ experience in Commercial Insurance and Risk Management, encompassing the areas of construction, product development, and marketing. Before entering the insurance industry, Alex worked in landscaping, manufacturing and hospitality. Alex’s unmatched industryspecific expertise and a solid understanding of complex insurance matters and risk exposures allow him to deliver innovative solutions to broker partners and clients. Alex is a graduate of Trent University with a Bachelor of Science (Geology and Earth Science). He is also a member of the Wood Manufacturing Cluster of Ontario (WMCO).

Ian McLean, President & CEO Greater Kitchener Waterloo Chamber of Commerce Ian McLean was appointed President & CEO of the Greater Kitchener Waterloo Chamber of Commerce in September of 2010. The Chamber is one of the largest Chambers in Ontario with over 1,600 members across Kitchener, Waterloo and Woolwich Township. In his role, Ian serves on the Immigration Partnership of Waterloo Region Council and the Chamber Health Care Recruitment Council. He also chairs the Connect the Corridor Coalition and is a member of the Prosperity Council. Previously, Ian served on Waterloo City Council for seven years and was Chair of the Finance and Strategic Planning Committee from 2008 to 2010. He also served on the City of Waterloo Audit Committee and was a member of the Waterloo North Hydro Board of Directors. His educational background includes an Honours B.A. from the University of Toronto and a Diploma in Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University.

PANELISTS Amber French, Founder & Managing Partner Catalyst Capital / Supply & Potect Amber French is founder and Managing Partner at Catalyst Capital, a firm focussed on investing in the Waterloo Region. She holds the role as the Director of Strategic Capital for Communitech and is partner at Archangel Network of Funds, a new $10M fund that aims to demystify angel investing and make it more accessible. She is the previous founder of Supply+Protect/PPE Access, Canada's largest marketplace for Canadian-made PPE (acquired). Amber holds a BSc from the University of Waterloo and is a proud mom of 2 boys.

Steve Mai, President & CEO Eclipse Automation Steve Mai is the President and CEO of Eclipse Automation – a global company founded in Cambridge, Ontario. More than 20 years ago, Steve left the shop floor of another automation provider, with a clear vision to reshape the landscape of automation. His ideology for Eclipse stems from the firm belief that “know-how” is the driving force and true intellectual property behind his thriving business. He has been steadfast in encouraging his team to: do things better, continuously innovate, respond to change, and like what you do. PANELISTS Jeremy Hedges, President & CEO The Canadian Shield / InkSmith Jeremy Hedges is an entrepreneur and business leader. In his first entrepreneurial endeavor, Jeremy founded InkSmith, an education technology company specializing in the delivery of 21st century technology and digital skills in the classroom. As CEO of InkSmith, Jeremy led the charge in pivoting the company to begin manufacturing critical PPE products at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, The Canadian Shield is one of the largest producers of PPE in Canada, and is leading a rapid shift towards advanced automation and sustainable materials in the medical device manufacturing industry. Operating as CEO of both ventures, Jeremy is a true leader on a mission to inspire innovation and impact within both of his operations. In addition to entrepreneurship, Jeremy has a keen interest in embracing social responsibility and building environmental sustainability for future generations.

Jennifer Seberras, President & CEO Simplify Supply Chain Solutions Jennifer Seberras is the founder and CEO of Simplify Supply Chain Solutions. Jennifer has deep expertise in logistics, and experience working with companies of all sizes across a wide range of industries. Under Jennifer’s leadership, Simplify delivers process-driven service excellence and best practices methods and tools for shipping and supply chain strategies to help build businesses. Under Jennifer’s leadership Simplify has grown to a business with over 100 vehicles that deliver 10,000 packages per day across Ontario.
