OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

river adventure Blue Earth County boasts more river shore than any other county in Minnesota. Mankato has a number of rivers to traverse, each with a different adventure. The two biggest rivers are the Blue Earth River and the Minnesota River. The Blue Earth River offers beautiful river bluffs, wildlife, waterfalls, hidden eco gems and sandbars for picnicking and swimming. On the Minnesota River you’ll find low banks, high hills and perfectly soft sandy beaches. Not equipped or want help navigating the river system? Contact one of three outfitters for help. They offer guides and equipment to make your trip on the river safe and fun. Anyone who takes on the river without a guide should remember Bent River Outfitter’s safety rules (SNAFA).

Plan your trip as short or as long as you would like. Venture down the Blue Earth River where you will find waterfalls and wildlife, or through downtown Mankato on the Minnesota River. If you're looking for rapids, ride down the Big Cobb River. The options are endless.

HISTORY OF GREATER MANKATO

history of greater mankato In 1880, Mankato was the fourth largest city in Minnesota with a population of 5,500. Today, more than 50,000 people call Mankato and North Mankato home. North Mankato sits across the river from Mankato and was established in 1898. Mankato and North Mankato have many historical attractions that are must-sees for visitors.

Mankato was originally named "Mahkato" (meaning greenish-blue earth) by its early inhabitants, the Dakota. Mankato is located at the confluence of the Minnesota and Blue Earth Rivers. In 1852, Parsons K. Johnson and Henry Jackson staked claims along these banks and founded the town of Mankato. The city was established on land purchased in a treaty between the U.S. government and the Dakota; breaking of this treaty by the government lead to the U.S.-Dakota Conflict of 1862. The first bridge between North Mankato and Mankato was the Veterans Memorial Bridge constructed in 1880, representing an interdependence and partnership between the cities that still continues. Today, many memorials and buildings exist to commemorate the diverse and important history that has shaped the Greater Mankato area.
