Minneopa Trail
trails & biking
There are over 50 miles of paved trails nestled in a scenic river valley waiting to be explored by foot or by bike. But there are also many miles of dirt trails perfect for a fatter tire. Mankato continues to grow as a mountain biking destination through the work of local biking enthusiasts. Walkers or runners will love the beauty of our trails. Not only are they aesthetically pleasing thanks to Mother Nature, but we also have the beauty of poetry along our trails. Our newest form of public art, the Mankato Poetry Walk and Ride, displays poetry on signs in our numerous parks and along our miles and miles of recreational trails. Stop and read the poetry of our local citizens or listen to an audio version straight from the mouth of the poet. For biking enthusiasts, Mankato features some of the best trails in the state and scenic roadways with wide shoulders and little traffic. Our trail system offers a spectacular view of areas that may not always be explored. Trail users will follow streams and cross upland and wetland areas, where one may see all kinds of wildlife. You never know what is around the next bend. Mountain biking continues to grow in greater Mankato through the dedication of groups like the Mankato Area Mountain Bikers (MAMB) who build sustainable, environmentally friendly trails that make the most of natural terrain features. This group also cares for and maintains some of the mountain biking areas in greater Mankato. There are currently five mountain biking areas to explore, the newest being the development at the Kiwanis Recreation Area.
Mountain Biking
Mankato offers five mountain biking trails to explore for experienced riders and newbies.
Seven Mile Creek Trail

President Greater Mankato Bike & Walk Advocates
MAMB Ft. LeHillier Trail
This 2.2 mile mountain bike trail is located at the intersection of Highways 66 and 90 just south of Mount Kato. This trail is a great spot for the kids to try out mountain biking.
My favorite ride what I call the Lake Crystal Loop because it encompasses three trails (Minneopa, South Route and Red Jacket); two waterfalls (Minneopa and Minnimishinoma); the Dam Café and their amazing pie; the coffee shop in Lake Crystal; four rivers and streams (Minneopa, Blue Earth, Le Sueur and Minnesota); three lakes; open country roads; Judson Bottom Road and Sibley Park in Mankato. It’s the long ride for the Mankato River Ramble (a local bike ride). All that packed in 45 miles or so of riding. It doesn’t get any better anywhere!
Kiwanis Recreation Area
Mankato’s newest mountain bike trail is five miles long and located at the Kiwanis Recreation Area just north of the Highway 169 and Highway 14 intersection north of Mankato. In addition to trails, the park also offers dog park areas, a canoe/kayak area and an archery range.
Mount Kato
Before the snow flies and after it melts again, Mount Kato turns its attention to mountain biking. Slightly more than seven miles of mountain-bike trails are accessible during the non-winter months.
Seven Mile Creek Trail
Seven Mile Park is a 628 acre county park located off of Hwy 169 between North Mankato and St. Peter. There are eight miles of multi-use trails with equestrian parking and a highway underpass. Several footbridges cross Seven Mile Creek.
LOCAL TIP
Our Greater Mankato Biking and Hiking Guide offers a bike map with suggested biking loops for bikers from beginners to experienced riders on both trails and country roads. Download your guide today online at www.visitmankatomn. com or call 507.385.6660 to be mailed a map.
If you are looking for a shorter scenic trail ride, the Minneopa Loop is the short 12 mile route used by the Mankato River Ramble. Begin at Sibley Park or Land of Memories Park and head west on the Minneopa Trail to Minneopa State Park. Explore the falls before heading south on the South Route Trail to the Red Jacket Trail and back to Sibley Park. This is a great route for those early spring rides when the temps are barely above 30 and the wind is blowing.
Indian Lake Conservation Area
Indian Lake Conservation Area is a 120-acre regional park that provides an outstanding recreational and environmental resource. The park, located south of Mankato on Indian Lake Road, melds environmental and recreational amenities. It offers a multi-use trail system which circles Indian Lake and connects with other regional trails.

The fans are always excellent at Training Camp, and I am always excited to see familiar faces throughout the camp village.

Minnesota State University, Mankato has been a part of our lives for many years. My husband Andy and I both graduated from MSU-M but that hasn’t been the last of our involvement. Andy grew up attending many sporting events with his dad and brothers and the tradition has stood for our own family. We enjoy watching the Mavs play basketball at Bresnan Area in the Taylor Center. It is one of the best Division II basketball arenas in the country. Our three kids love going to the games because of the excitement of the game, the on-court activities and contests, and the concession stand treats. What Andy and I appreciate the most is the chance to spend time together at a wholesome, family event. Go Mavs!
Burn Off Some Energy
Spend the day at the Mankato Family YMCA. Kids will love to run in the gyms, play in the Kid’s Gym and swim in the Taylor Family Aquatic Center and Pool. Let the school age kids relax in the YMCA’s Pepsi Cube with foosball, a climbing wall, video games and more.

Feature Park:
Sibley Park
MANKATO'S OLDEST PARK OFFERS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE.
Sibley Park is a beloved destination central to the Mankato community. Hosting a petting zoo, ball diamonds, band shell, picnic areas and beautiful gardens, it remains one of the most visited and beautiful parks in the area. Nevertheless, the park’s history is as rich and exciting as the amenities it offers today, with 2015 marking the 50th anniversary of the great 1965 Minnesota River Valley flood that forever changed Sibley Park and the city of Mankato. Named after Minnesota’s first Governor in 1887, Sibley Park’s 120 acre spread had initially been considered for a town
12
site. Noting high water marks on the surrounding trees, early settlers decided against the area, heeding to evidence of flooding that later proved volatile in coming years. Just a few months after its founding, the city of Mankato added an oval horse/ bicycle racetrack, grandstand and judging station to the park. Opening in 1897, the track was half a mile long, hosting popular races throughout the early 1900s until 1915 when the track befell age and overuse.
2015 GUIDE TO VISITING & LIVING IN GREATER MANKATO
In the years that followed, park administrators then shifted their attention to the promotion and maintenance of the park’s growing exotic animal zoo. As early as 1907, Sibley Park had established a small-scale zoo, over time adding a bear cage and housing over 125 animals including bison, alligators, ostriches, bears, and most notably Mutt and Jeff, the crowd favorite, inseparable lion and dog duo. Unfortunately, on April 10, 1965, frozen ground, melting snow and intense rainfall caused the zoo to flood in a matter of 10-15 minutes, cresting at a remarkable 29 feet—the second highest recorded Mankato flood to date. Tragically, many of

the animals drowned in the flood, marking the end of the exotic zoo in Mankato. Since its recovery from the devastating flood 50 years ago, Sibley Park has challenged its former glory, growing into one of the most splendid and familyfriendly locations in the Mankato area. The lions, alligators and bears have since been replaced by kid-friendly farm animals, offering a fun experience for families at Sibley Farm’s petting zoo and play-ground facilities. Extensive year-round gardens are host to colorful and seasonal floral displays, with the bright colors of spring and summer rivaled only by the warm leaves of fall and

crisp winter frosts when Sibley Park comes festively aglow, hosting the annual Kiwanis Holiday Lights. Amidst a stunning display of over 1 million LED lights, the park is transformed into a winter wonderland, offering visitors horse drawn wagon rides through the lights, a synthetic ice-rink and a peek at a few of Santa’s most prized possessions—his reindeer! In the warmer seasons, you’ll find the park’s ball fields buzzing with youth and adult competitions while other visitors enjoy friendly gettogethers beneath the garden’s gazebo or a scenic workout on the HealthBeat outdoor exercise equipment. 50 Years of Minnesota Vikings
Training Camp MANKATO'S PURPLE AND GOLD TRADITION Skol! This summer marks Mankato’s 50th Anniversary hosting the Minnesota Vikings Training Camp on the Minnesota State University, Mankato campus. Since its first year in 1966, Vikings Training Camp has grown alongside the Mankato community, expanding and becoming one of the city’s most exciting summer highlights. Although camp is shorter than it was at its inception, currently lasting three to four weeks throughout July and August as compared to the full seven weeks in 1966, the schedule has nevertheless continued to boost new attractions and activities for all ages. In recent years, training camp has seen additions like that of the Vikings Village, which sells memorabilia and includes a kid’s play area, as well as multiple new on-site food and beverage vendors. Prior to finding their way further south, the Vikes held their summer practices at Bemidji State University from 1961-1965 before moving to Mankato in 1966. That same year Minnesota, Chicago, Detroit and Green Bay were consolidated to form the Central Division of the Western Conference and since then a star-studded line-up of players have traveled to Mankato as part of the Vikings roster. Names like Herschel Walker (RB), Warren Moon (QB), Keith Millard (DT), Chris Carter (WR), Randy Moss (WR), Jared Allen (DE), and Carl Eller (DE) are a few of the football legends who have made their way to the MSU-M campus.

Each offers a unique experience and entertainment options from grape stomps to murder mystery parties, but all provide the escape and relaxation a person associates with a nice glass of wine. If only a brew will do for you, then check out our local brewery or unwind with a hometown brew at a local watering hole.
Chankaska Creek Ranch and Winery
Chankaska Creek Ranch and Winery is Minnesota’s newest farm winery. Sitting on the right bank of the Chankaska Creek near Kasota, Minnesota, this vineyard and winery offers a scenic backdrop for your glass of relaxation. Hand-crafted, Chankaska Wines’ artisan winemaking techniques ensure a transformation from hearty grapes on the vine to a flavorful wine experience.

LOCAL TIP Jeff Lang, aka Stunt Monkey
On-Air & Promotions Director at Radio Mankato
It’s incredibly exciting to watch and be a part of Mankato’s growth; our radio stations are very active in helping promote and execute community events. I find myself at a wide variety of local entertainment each week from large exciting concerts at the Verizon Center, local festivals, or to MoonDogs baseball games. My favorite time of the year comes in August during Mankato’s Ribfest! Four days of barbeque ribs, cold beer, and live music. The right combination of events for families and adults to enjoy is very special to me and makes this an exciting place to live and play.
shows somewhere in Mankato every week. If you would rather kick back and watch the game, several local bars and pubs offer big flat-screen TV’s and great food and drinks to share with friends while rooting for your favorite team. Looking for more excitement? Try an evening with friends at the Wow Zone! where you can bowl or play arcade games, laser tag or glow in the dark mini-golf.

The ranked list below is according to the Mankato Magazine’s Reader’s Choice Awards of Best Pizza in Mankato:
Dino's Pizzeria
Not hungry for pizza? Try one of Mankato’s other highly notable and delicious restaurants, from American, Asian, Indian, Mexican and more. Find a complete listing on pages 38-42 or go to the dining page on our website to narrow down all your options.
1. Pagliai’s Pizza (pronounced Polly-eyes) – ‘Quality and Quantity since 1969.’ The go-to for college students with a laid back atmosphere, representing a hidden gem in the heart of Mankato’s downtown since 1969. 2. Jake’s Stadium Pizza – ‘Wouldn’t a Jake’s Pizza Taste Great Right Now?’ Jake’s is a family owned business that has been passed down from generation to generation since 1964. Jake’s provides a family-friendly setting and thin crust pizzas that are a Mankato legacy! 3. Dino’s New York Style Pizzeria – ‘Giving the Mankato area authentic, New York style pizza.’ At Dino’s, kids are able to play with the pizza dough, watch the pizzas be made and all tables are equipped with blank white paper ‘cloths’ and crayons for the kiddo’s entertainment. While the kids make table art, mom and dad can enjoy a beer or delicious glass of local vino. Although we have only mentioned a few pizza must-eats, there are over 20 stellar places in Mankato that feature pizza on their menu. Go ahead, try them all.
