The Rome Floyd Chamber announced today, February 27, 2019, that Ball Corporation has purchased the 67-acre site known as the Northwest Regional Industrial Park. “This is an exciting time for Floyd and Gordon Counties,” said Floyd County Commission Chair Scotty Hancock. “We are pleased that Ball Corporation has secured this industrial site for potential future development.” The 67-acre site was originally purchased in 1997 by the Gordon County/Floyd County Joint Development Authority. The Northwest Regional Industrial Park is located between Rome and Calhoun on West Hermitage Road. “The Northwest Regional Industrial Park represents 67 total acres with all utilities and needed infrastructure, this lends itself to the future growth of our economy,” said Rome City Mayor Bill Collins. “The purchase of this land is a catalyst for future growth of Rome and Floyd County.” Ball Corporation supplies innovative, sustainable packaging solutions for beverage, personal care, and household products, as well as aerospace and other technologies and services primarily for the U.S. government. “Ball Corporation and their talented employees are such an asset to our community and have a history of expansions including additional capital investments and job growth,” said Rome Floyd Chamber Chairman of the Board, Elaine Abercrombie. “We are thrilled Ball Corporation has decided to purchase the Northwest Regional Industrial Park. As Chairman of the Rome Floyd Chamber and on behalf of our Board of Directors, I would like to recognize Ken Wright, Director of Business and Industry Services, and Heather Seckman, Director of Economic Development, for their hard work and diligence for this project.” The Rome facility opened in 1993 and produces beverage containers. A 2013 SPLOST project is complete and is already benefiting the community. The new Rome-Floyd Recycling Center, 412 Lavender Drive, is a much-needed improvement for the citizens of Rome and Floyd County. The new building is much larger and allows the Recycling Center to triple its capacity. The new location provides for storing recyclables indoors before the sorting process begins, this saves the recyclables from becoming contaminated with rainwater and as a result has to be sent to a landfill. "Our community is fortunate, citizens in the City of Rome are offered recycling collection in front of their house," said Michael Skeen. "Even with this wonderful service, we estimate that only one-third of our residents utilize the services," said Michael Skeen. "We have to work harder to educate the community on the services offered to them and the impact recycling has on their community." "We now know the next step for recycling in Rome and Floyd County is education," said Commissioner Wright Bagby. "We've worked with students in our community to help educate them on the fire department, and now we want to take a similar model and help students understand the importance of recycling and not littering." The Recycling Center helps to keep trash out of the landfill and helps to save the community money every year. On a local note, The Recycling Center helps to provide bottles made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) to Marglen Industries who then turns the PET into Fiber. It is good to know that our efforts not only help our landfill and our budget, but they also help support a local private business. "Overall the Recycling Center helps the community in so many ways, but at the end of the day we still need help," said Michael Skeen. " Always make sure that only recyclables go into a recycling bin. Keep Rome-Floyd Beautiful works closely with the Recycling Center and other departments in the Rome and Floyd Community to achieve a cleaner and more beautiful community through education and involvement of its citizens. The organization helps to host events to celebrate Arbor Day, recycling events, youth education and more. A significant focus of the organization is litter. Keep Rome -Floyd Beautiful reported that in 2018, 652 average bags of litter were picked up along city roads each month and there were 160 tires collected from city streets in 2018. "Keep Rome-Floyd Beautiful strives to reduce littering, improve recycling, and invest in projects that promote community beautification," said Emma Wells. Director of Keep Rome-Floyd Beautiful. "It gives citizens the opportunity to get involved with environmental projects that they are passionate about, and exists to raise awareness about how we can all be better stewards of our beautiful community." Communities In Schools of Rome-Floyd County Communities in Schools of Rome-Floyd County (CIS) has been an integral part of the community for 25 years, and the organization continues to grow and thrive. The staff works hard to make an impact in the lives of children in the community.

CIS Rome-Floyd serves Rome City and Floyd County School Districts through the Mentor/Volunteer program and their Site Coordinators based at Coosa Middle School and Phoenix Performance Learning Center. The staff and mentors at Communities in Schools help students to achieve academic success while in school, and at the same time, are helping students with life skills to help live a successful life after graduation. "We consider the whole student when working with our students. Many of our students are not only struggling at school but also struggling outside of school. It's our job to help support them to the best of our ability" said Gregory Wooten, Executive Director of Communities In Schools of Rome-Floyd County.

Jennifer Meacham, Site Coordinator at Coosa Middle School, and Gail Veal, Site Coordinator at Phoenix Performance Learning Center, work hard to help students with mostly non-academic support such as Individual and Group Mentoring, Parental Engagement, Community Service, and Personal Growth and Development. And, as their evidence-based approach has proven, academic success likely follows. Additionally, the staff and mentors work to teach the students the importance of attendance, health and wellness, how to tie a tie, money management, and more all while helping the students graduate high school. Once students find their life outside of school less stressful the staff and volunteers start to see even more improvement in the students' school work. Last year, CIS reported 92.7% of CIS high school students and 100% of middle school students who were failing academically improved their grades. "As a community, either we invest our time and resources in our students on the front end with programs like CIS or we'll be forced do it after the fact, which is much more costly", said Mr. Wooten. In 25 years, Communities in Schools of Rome-Floyd County has served 16,709 students, recruited and trained 9,792 community volunteers who provided 176,898 hours of services to the students and schools in the community. Congratulations to the 2019 Star Students & Teachers
STAR Awards, sponsored by the Rome Floyd Chamber,
were presented at each of the high schools in Rome and Floyd County during the month of February. The STAR Awards were founded by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce in 1958, and in 1994 PAGE, was created by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce in order to partner with the Georgia Department of Education to present the STAR recognitions. STAR Awards are presented to a high school senior, who has the highest score on a single test date on the three-part SAT, and the student must be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average. The STAR Student then determines their STAR Teacher by who has been the most influential and instrumental in their academic success.

UGA SBDC The Rome Floyd Chamber hosted its first Monthly Member Meeting in February. The meeting is a new benefit of Chamber Membership that gives Chamber members an opportunity to learn more about their membership and allows for members to network with each other. Day at the Capitol Chamber Members traveled to Atlanta, Georgia to meet with state representatives, Senator Chuck Hufstetler, Representative Katie Dempsey, Representative Eddie Lumsden, and visit the State Capitol. The group met with Department of Natural Resources, the Commissioner of Agriculture, the North Georgia Regional Representative for Governor Brian Kemp, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, and Senator Blake Tillery. This annual trip is an excellent opportunity for Chamber Members to advocate for business in Rome and Floyd County.
