Georgia Tech Emerging Leaders Spend Time with Industry Leaders in Rome and Floyd County

The Rome Floyd Chamber hosted and toured faculty members from Georgia Tech’s Leadership Program. The Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) is an annual cohort of associate and full professors at Georgia Tech who are chosen through an application process to take part in a nine-month leadership growth opportunity, including exposure to monthly workshops, small-group work, selfassessments, and project sharing with the provost’s executive leadership team.

Terry Blum, Faculty Director, Institute for Leadership and Entrepreneurship explained, “The GT Provost’s Emerging Leaders Program learned so much from the Rome Floyd Chamber of Commerce and the organizations who allowed us to visit. The system of interorganizational relationships puts Rome/Floyd County ahead of other areas because of the foresight that is demonstrable in anticipating the business needs of the future. The quality of life in the area is enhanced through its service in developing the human resource to adequately meet the economic development goals as well as the growth of the companies that are located there.”

The two-day event kicked off with a reception at the Rome Floyd Chamber where Georgia Tech alumni and local industry leaders came together for a discussion about industry and workforce opportunities in Rome and Floyd County. At the reception, the group heard from Tim Groves, GE Power and President of the local Georgia Tech Alumni Association. “We had an opportunity to share how Georgia Tech Alumni are contributing to the community. We shared our mentoring program with the Rome Boy's and Girl's Club Robotics program. It was great to meet the GT faculty, and expose them to our community. Go Jackets!” said Tim Groves. The group also received an update about local industry from Ken Wright, Director of Business and Industry Services for the Rome Floyd Chamber. Bob Owens, CFO and Marty Drennen, Vice President of Engineering both from OTR Wheel Engineering attended the reception and talked to many of the professors about workforce opportunities. County Commissioner Rhonda Wallace commented about the reception, “It is great to see so many Georgia Tech alumni and local industry leaders come together with these Georgia Tech professors to discuss workforce opportunities in Rome and Floyd County.”

“The level of technology used in products and services makes me want to have many of the people we visited talk to the students at GT. While we observed humility among the groups we visited, we hope there is realization that the potential college students can compete for places at GT and succeed in our programs,” explained Terry Blum. "Pirelli Tire was delighted to once again partner with the chamber and host Georgia Tech visitors," said Pirelli Human Resources Director Clay Cooper. "It is clear Pirelli and Georgia Tech are aligned in their desire to innovate and develop future leaders." The Group toured the Floyd County College and Career Academy, visited with Georgia Northwestern Technical College’s leadership team and toured Pirelli Tire. Dr. Terry Blum added, “I am looking forward to returning to Rome/Floyd because the County and Chamber leaders and our GT alumni are so gracious.” Article continued on page 10.

Vargo Orthodontics Gives Back

Vargo Orthodontics has become a crucial part of the Rome and Floyd County Community. The practice first began in 1996 after Dr. Joseph Vargo graduated from West Virginia University with a Master’s in orthodontics. Dr. Vargo started his practice in Rome and split time between his practice and a larger practice in Atlanta. After some time traveling back and forth, Dr. Vargo knew it was time to focus his efforts in Rome. Dr. Vargo took a leap of faith and invested all his time in Rome and Floyd County. “The community was ready,” said Dr. Vargo. “I was offering new options, innovative and modern care for my patients and the community responded. The response, along with the one on one connection I could have with my patients, motivated me to focus on my practice.” The practice is now located in the former Double Cola Building, 419 East 2nd Avenue. The Double Cola building is rich with history and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Dr. Vargo believed the building could be restored and provide the home for his practice. The building is now the perfect mix of history and innovation. The practice continued to grow, and Dr. Vargo invested further into his community and began to tie one of his early passions into his work. As a young child, Dr. Vargo wanted to become a teacher and he felt a strong pull to bring education into his practice. Dr. Vargo places a high priority on school programs and community outreach. Vargo Orthodontics is reaching out to students and teachers through several programs including; Partners In Education, Smart Smiles, Guide

to Dental Trauma, and Parent Teacher Organization Presentation on Dental Health Awareness. The Partners in Education program has become an important part of the community outreach. This program allows patients to learn about the importance of giving. When a patient begins their treatment, they are given an opportunity to tithe $50 to their school or school program. To date, the funds donated exceed $34,000 to 42 different schools. Smart Smiles is another program offered by Vargo Orthodontics; the program allows Vargo staff members to go into local classrooms and educate students on the importance of oral health and equip them with the skills to develop healthy habits. The staff also works with education professionals to teach them how to respond successfully to dental trauma, in a school setting. “It is important for us to give back to the community that supports us so well,” said Dr. Vargo. The Vargo Orthodontics team has plans for the future to continue to give back to their community and help provide innovative and quality care to their patients.

What is the Exchange Club of Rome? The Exchange Club of Rome was chartered in 1936 and is the largest service club in Rome and Floyd County. We meet every Friday at The Palladium located on the Coosa Valley Fair Grounds. Nonprofit Roundtable Chair J.R. Davis leads the discussion at May's Nonprofit Roundtable meeting.

Nonprofits are an integral part of the Rome-Floyd Community. The nonprofit sector meets the needs of citizens by providing specific services. The Rome Floyd Chamber currently has 100 nonprofit members in the Rome and Floyd County area. These nonprofits range in focus from youth services, churches, schools and arts. Nonprofits also contribute to the local economy. Nonprofits provide jobs to members of the community and make Rome and Floyd County more appealing to those who move into the community. “Nonprofits help to promote a strong quality of life,” said Nonprofit Roundtable Chairman J.R. Davis, Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Georgia, Executive Director. “Companies and Industries looking to relocate take into consideration what resources are available for their staff. The number of nonprofits located here make Rome and Floyd County an even more desirable community.” The Rome Floyd Chamber began the Nonprofit Roundtable in 2017 as a way to help the nonprofits in Rome and Floyd County connect and collaborate. Each quarter over 40 nonprofits meet at the Rome Floyd Chamber to discuss issues and opportunities within the community. “For me, there are three purposes of this roundtable,” said Nonprofit Roundtable Chair J.R. Davis, Boys, and Girls Club. “ The first is a collaboration; it’s important for all of the nonprofits in Rome and Floyd County to work together. The second is to avoid duplication. There are so many wonderful nonprofits in our area and it's important that we are meeting the needs of the community and not duplicating efforts. The third is to advocate for our sector. It is important to share what we do for the community with businesses.” “We are excited to see how this group will continue to grow,” said Mr. Davis. “We hope to help the nonprofits in our community grow and help them partner even more with the business community.

How many members are in the Exchange Club of Rome? The Exchange Club of Rome has 210 members. The National Exchange Club was founded on March 27th, 1911 in Detroit, Michigan and currently the organization is headquartered in Toledo, OH. What are the primary focuses of the Exchange Club of Rome? The Exchange Club of Rome focuses on three programs of service; Americanism, Community Service and Youth Programs. Also, we promote our National Project as well, The prevention of Child Abuse. We, along with the Coosa Valley Fair Association, support and promote the mission of the Exchange Club Family Resource Center. What can we expect in the upcoming months from the Exchange Club of Rome? This October the Coosa Valley Fair, October 2nd - 6th at the Coosa Valley Fairgrounds. The Georgia Public Service Commission, Atlanta Gas Light, Georgia Power and International Paper announced a monumental infrastructure expansion benefiting current industry and future economic development projects. The infrastructure expansion project will include a natural gas line expansion in the West Rome/Coosa area. "This was a difficult thing they did to get this project," said Tim Echols, Vice Chairman of the Georgia Public Service Commission. "We get calls from communities wanting pipeline replacements, and we can hardly do any of them because of the expense. Yet, your Chamber put together a team to come to us with a request and then brought us here to show us the impact this investment would have." The expansion will include replacing the existing four-inch natural gas pipeline with a 12-inch pipe. The expansion will be a $22 million dollar expansion. "We are proud to have a strong relationship with the Rome Floyd Chamber," said Jenna Guzman, International Paper. "The relationship is recognized throughout the International Paper organization and much appreciated by all. Thank you to Ken Wright for all of his hard work on this project." Rome High's College and Career Academy The Rome City School Board broke ground on Rome High School's College and Career Academy. The new college and career academy will offer classes in Robotics, Veterinary Services, Advanced Manufacturing, Medicine and more. Construction on the project has begun and will continue through the summer.
