Shorter University’s extraordinary year in athletics has been claimed by some to be the best year by any collegiate athletics program in Georgia history.

FLY!

A result of strategic planning, superior coaching and a strong commitment to excellence, Shorter University celebrated three NAIA national championships, three NAIA national coaches of the year, and several other top 10 and top 5 finishes during their 2011-2012 season. Head Men’s Basketball Coach Chad Warner, Track & Field Coach Scott Byrd and Head Softball Coach Al Thomas were among those recognized for these national honors. Each coach was ecstatic over the success of their teams and were particularly proud of their student athletes. “This was truly a special year for our team. I felt like this team had good talent and played hard, but most importantly, they played for each other. When you have that combination, special things can happen. I am so thankful for our players and their efforts. They deserved all the credit they received. I feel really fortunate to have been a part of a group like we had this year,” said Coach Chad Warner, Senior Associate Athletics Director and Head Men’s Basketball Coach. Continuing their success, the Women’s Softball team finished their season as a national champion with three team members receiving NAIA All-American honors. Head Softball Coach Al Thomas added, “I am ecstatic for Shorter University, our players, our coaches, and our entire athletic department and administration. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to coach these young women. We believe that everyone associated with Shorter University, past and present, along with the entire community, had a hand in this accomplishment and deserve a chance to enjoy this national championship. I am blessed that this team allowed me to be its coach and this award belongs to the coaching staff, players, support staff and administration. Without their support, none of this would have been possible.” Shorter’s Men’s Track and Field team finished the season with their second consecutive NAIA National Championship and 18 track team members receiving NAIA AllAmerican honors. Track and Field Coach Scott Byrd was also named NAIA National Coach of Year for Track and Field. He commented on this award with, “It is always an honor to be recognized by your peers for the accomplishments of your student-athletes and program. It is a reflection of great assistant coaches and talented young athletes who have dedicated themselves to our program and our university to accomplish a team goal. I am excited to have earned the Coach of the Year award for Shorter University and I hope that it helps reaffirm our staff’s dedication to our student-athletes and the university.” Shorter achieved great success on the conference level Shorter Univerity’s Small Co-Ed Cheerleading team captured the NAIA winning five conference championships during the 2011-2012 National Championship in 2012. season. Shorter University has also come a long way in the NACDA Director’s Cup, an athletics program that ranks the seasons of overall athletics programs. Just five years ago, Shorter did not receive any points in this cup. This year they finished second in the NAIA. “This was all pretty exciting for our teams,” said Athletics Director Bill Peterson. “We’ve all worked hard and that hard work is showing great results.” Shorter hopes to continue their success as they transition to NCAA Division II membership next year. Mr. Peterson believes moving to this division will be a great benefit to the Shorter University’s Men’s Basketball team came out on top in the Southern States Athletic Conference this year finishing the season with a student athletes. He also considered much of their success to each coaches commitment to their faith. “For us, as a Christian university, our coaches are all people of faith and they talk about their faith and use it to help the students in their demeanor and manner. It’s why our coaches are here. They really want to have a great impact on our students lives.” He attributes much of their success to the quality of coaches they have on staff, the continued support they have from both the administration, and the entire Shorter University community. “When we have a student athlete enroll at Shorter University, our faculty and staff members are committed to seeing these athletes do their best and ultimately graduate.” He continued, “It takes all of these people working together and believing in what you are trying to do. When you couple this with the amount of talent we have in our athletes and coaches, you are positioning yourself for greatness.” As an example, he stated that many coaches attend choral and drama programs and that professors and staff members attend sporting events. NCAA Division II membership will help Shorter broaden its athletic appeal and Shorter Univerity’s women’s will help them attract highly competitive programs. basketball player Kelly Ellison gets They will get a taste of this new level of competition ready for a shot. Shorter will also host the very first NCAA Division I team at Barron Stadium with Charleston Southern University. The Shorter University Women’s Basketball team will also play Mississippi State University and Florida State University in exhibition games during the upcoming season. Their NCAA membership will also allow them to upgrade their facilities and hire additional coaches and trainers to their staff. “Many NCAA Division II programs have better facilities than we do and more coaches and trainers on their staff. More than likely we will follow suit in order to compete with the teams on this level,” Mr. Peterson added. With their over 600 student athletes, Shorter hopes that within the next five years they have another year just like the one they’ve had this year. Growing their business in Rome and Floyd County was always their plan and with over 80 employees, they are well on their way to accomplishing this goal. Since their acquisition in 2010, Source Therapy Billing, a division of Birmingham, Alabama-based Source Medical has already achieved greatness in their downtown Rome location. As a result, they have grown from initially servicing 26 clinics and 20 employees to 147 clinics and 81 employees. Source Medical provides the number one software for practice Source Medical Executive Vice President & Chief management in outpatient physical therapy and ambulatory surgery Operating Officer Ralph Riccardi works with Vice President Teresa Bohannon at Source Therapy Billing. centers. In 2005, Source Medical decided to expand its product offerings to include back office and billing services for their clients. As a result, Source Medical currently provides software for roughly 2,200 ambulatory surgery centers and about 3,000 outpatient physical therapy clinics nationwide. It was also through this expansion that they sought to acquire Rome-based Advance Patient Financial Services, a division of Advance Rehabilitation and their location was decided to stay in Rome and Floyd County. Advance Patient Financial Services, used Source Medical’s software to provide billing services for a number of local physical therapy clinics. Based on their knowledge of billing and unique nature of Source Medical’s software, the management team at Source Medical felt like they were the perfect place to begin their entry into the physical therapy billing market. In April 2010, Source Medical acquired Advance Patient Financial Services and renamed the company to Source Therapy Billing. Source Medical Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Ralph Riccardi describes their product, “If a company is using their own software and they are doing billing in the back-end, the complexities of healthcare reimbursement and the unique requirements of therapy or surgery billing is something that is a critical function of their company that may not be their core competence.” He continued, “When it comes to the billing services, many companies will hesitate on outsourcing due to the risk of losing data. With our system, that risk is completely removed and the software can be managed internally at a clinic or by our staff without ever having to migrate any data.” From this approach, the clinic staff becomes familiar with a certain software and it gives them the option for local control if necessary. As a result of their employment growth, Source Therapy Billing has also expanded their office facilities. They began in the third floor of the 519 Broad Street building and now also occupy part of the first floor of the 519 Broad Street building, and the buildings at 527 and 529 Broad Street. Being downtown is truly an asset for their staff. As a result, their employees frequently dine for lunch at the local restaurants and do business with the local small businesses. “We try to do as many things locally as we can,” added Teresa Bohannon, Source Therapy Billing. “Our people know the downtown restaurants and they know us.” Rome and Floyd County’s strong education and healthcare community was a deciding factor for the Source Medical team in their acquisition. “We were attracted to Rome and Floyd County because of their colleges and university and the quality healthcare,” Mr. Riccardi added. Source Therapy Billing has clients all over the country from New England to California, North Dakota, South Dakota and all across the South. Their clients range from large multi-site clients that have Source Therapy Billing is located in the 500 Block of Broad Street at over 20 clinics, to small single site clinics, private practices, and new locations 519, 527 and 529 Broad Street. startups. They continue to be a great asset to downtown Rome. Look for them to continue to build upon their success in the future and become an increasing part of Downtown Rome. What’s That PROJECT

Rome/Floyd Fire Administration & Education Center To better serve the community during a storm, natural disaster, or fire emergency, the Rome/Floyd County Fire Department and Floyd County Emergency Management Agency are completing a new operations and education center on East 12th Street. This facility will allow for proper coordination among local agencies and will house a backup 911-call center, fire department headquarters, a fire prevention and education facility, and proper storage facilities for emergency management operations. “Having this facility gives us a better chance to prepare for effective from Pinson’s Inc. work on the emergency recovery,” stated Floyd County Emergency Management Director Scotty Crews operations offices. Hancock. “It will allow us to better coordinate with the necessary local agencies.” A part of the 2009 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), this project was envisioned as the county sought to construct an operations center that provided more stability during emergencies. They also wanted to give the fire department adequate space to more effectively run their operations. Included in this center is a new weather station that allows the emergency management team to better watch the weather particularly in circumstances like the April 2011 tornadoes. Another benefit for the community is the multi-purpose use of the fire prevention and education center. “During a natural disaster, we can set up a disaster relief center in this facility and a shelter for those that need it.”

Pictured above is the fire prevention and education room. This room will seat 175 people and sleep 60 people in case of an emergency.

This room will seat up to 175 people and can provide sleeping space for 60 people. The center section of the facility features a covered drive-through allowing for individuals to drive into the facility and enter under a covered area during severe weather. This facility will also have a top-notch security and an operations center complete with 25 computers for use during a disaster. It will have access to the State of Georgia resources in case additional fire trucks or emergency management equipment is needed. The advanced weather system included in this facility will allow the staff to watch up to four different weather reports at any time. For example, during the April 2011 tornadoes, they will be able to watch weather as it is happening locally, on the state level, regionally and

nationally. Along with the immediate enhancement to emergency operations, the Rome Fire Department will see significant upgrades to their facilities. For the very first time, the fire chief, division chief and fire prevention manager will have their offices in the same building. This will greatly enhance access to these individuals. Fire Chief Gordon Henderson explained, “If we have a business owner who has a question about something fire code related, they now can find us all in one location whereas before they would have to drive to numerous offices across Rome and Floyd County.” Further enhancing the city and county’s operations, emergency Work continues on the emergency operations storage management, fire department, and local law enforcement agencies will facility. receive significant upgrades to their radio system. A project of the 2009 SPLOST, this radio system will synchronize the communications from all of these agencies so they can better communicate during emergency situations. “In the past, our radios have all been on different frequencies and it has made it difficult for us to communicate, but we made it work using cellular phones and other devices. This new radio system will remove all of those hindrances and allow us all to better serve the citizens of this community,” Mr. Henderson added. Ensuring the citizens of Rome and Floyd County are safe continues to be the top priority for both of these agencies and the addition of this facility will allow them to enhance their efforts in Rome and Floyd County. This facility is scheduled to open this Fall.

Michelle Hubbard For Michelle Hubbard, her journey to Rome and Floyd County came through several positions across four states. A native of Huntsville, Alabama, Ms. Hubbard obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama in corporate finance and investment management and is currently pursuing her master’s degree in accounting. Upon her graduation from the University of Alabama, she began work with General Motors. Her career with GM took her to plants in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, North Alabama, South Georgia and Louisiana. Once out west, she moved to Hallsville, Texas where she was introduced to STEMCO, a division of EnPro Industries located in Longview, Texas. While in Texas, she worked with the STEMCO leadership team during their due diligence process with Rome Tool & Die often traveling to Rome and Floyd County for visits. STEMCO acquired Rome Tool & Die in January of 2011 and until she accepted her current position, she would continue to visit the community from time to time. As Controller for STEMCO-Rome, she is responsible for profit and loss analysis, cost-market analysis, budgeting, and forecasting. She has also only worked for manufacturing facilities and as a financial analyst her entire career and through her years with STEMCO, she was offered this position in Rome and Floyd County. “I enjoy watching the whole manufacturing process,” she stated. “It’s fascinating to watch a product leave our plant completely different than it came into the plant.” STEMCO-Rome manufactures steel brake shoes for the heavy duty trucking industry and provides contract stamping services. Their newest endeavor is putting friction padding on the brake shoe creating a “lined brake shoe”. When asked what she most enjoys about her job she responded with, “The challenges of being a part of a manufacturing facility and helping to make decisions and watching them come to fruition. What I do is so tangible and I get to see the impact I make in what we do.” Outside of work, Ms. Hubbard enjoys spending time with her husband and their 16-year old daughter. Their daughter will attend Rome High School where she will be active in the Rome High School Band and Color Guard. They have already fallen in love with Rome and Floyd County and it was truly a great fit for them. “We love the area. Every time I came to visit, I enjoyed the area and the people. The community is similar to what I grew up in and I’m happy to be back in this part of the country again,” she stated. They were also surprised at the amount of local activities. “From First Friday concerts to the Rome Braves, we have been so impressed at the amount of activities found in this community,” she continued. For the future, STEMCO-Rome is making great strides in their local business and is working toward creating a High Performance Workplace at their facility. “We want this to be the place that people want to come to work,” she added. A local business for over 50 years, STEMCO-Rome hopes it can continue its strong legacy of providing quality products in Rome and Floyd County. Great Reasons why you should choose

1. Our Caring Staff Our dedicated staff is truly what makes The Harbor special. We know that the staff is our greatest asset, not the buildings, nor the design. So, we provide an extensive training investment in the people that provide care. 2. New State-of-the-Art Design We researched the newest ideas and trends in caring for residents with memory loss and have included these elements in our new building. From colors, to apartment layouts, to common area design, we have focused on the needs of those with memory care needs. 3. Cutting Edge Alzheimer’s Program From our staff training, to our design, to our technology, to our activities and life enrichment, we have created a cutting edge Alzheimer’s program.

4. Technology Through our SimpleC interactive monitors in each room, we are able to offer a NEW non-drug therapy system to promote memory retention. Each apartment is furnished with a SimpleC touch screen monitor that is personalized to each resident’s interests, taste and history. 5. Activities and Life Enrichment Our trademarked Purposeful Daysm program is a comprehensive activities program that focuses on helping our residents meet their highest potential. 6. Veterans Benefit Approved Ask about the assisted living assistance program through the Veterans Administration. 7. Great Setting Our great location along with our professionally designed memory care courtyard offers serene and safe walking paths and garden spots for our residents to enjoy.
