Letter from the Chairman
Greetings Members: We are thrilled to share with you in this issue our new name and logo. This rebranding effort is a culmination of Chamber leaders, local professionals and a diverse group of members coming together with a task and a mission to provide a contemporary, global look with a strong unified message. The new logo for the Chamber symbolizes the confluence of the three rivers and seven hills. Embedded in the logo are an R and an F, representing Rome and Floyd County adding new growth all around. As you look through the arched doorway, you see a diamond, a shining symbol of a “city on a hill”….where opportunity awaits. There are threads coming together. Threads representing our fabric, the unique individuals representing a common goal, the same vision….to cultivate our community to make it fertile for additional growth, producing jobs and harvesting opportunity for all of Rome and Floyd County citizens. In looking at the logo, one sees bridges. We continue to build bridges, develop transformational leadership and connect people to promote business with a unified economic development approach. Bridges connect us to our vibrant downtown, a gathering place where conversations spark smiles, laughter and innovative ideas and solutions. These bridges take us over the river to our sporting venues where we play tennis, walk the greenways, kayak the river ways and hit it out of the park at a Rome Braves Game. So what may look simple at first glance tells a rich story of past and future coming together, from analog to digital with diversity, industry and service with total clarity and focus on our beautiful metro city on a hill. For more information, please visit the website at www.romega.com Please enjoy the articles in this month’s issue. I invite all our members to Business After Hours at Darlington School on February 21, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. co-hosted by Citizens First Bank and I look forward to meeting you at this event. Please call on us at the Chamber to provide any resources for you and your business and please stop in the Chamber office located at 1 Riverside Parkway and meet the staff who is always ready and eager to serve you.
Sincerely,

Georgia Northwestern Technical College
Helping the Manufacturing Industry Grow In Rome Georgia Northwestern Technical College has taken another step toward adding to and enhancing RomeFloyd County's already stellar skilled workforce with their new program for Tool and Die Maintenance and Repair. Having experienced workers in the field of Tool and Die Maintenance are extremely important in the manufacturing industry. GNTC reports there is a talent gap in the United States and it is affecting the manufacturing business in Rome- Floyd County. It is reported that within five years more than 60 percent of jobs in our state will require college certification or a degree. "The skills for tool and die maintenance are in great demand and now due even more to many manufacturers having moved here," says Pete McDonald, President of Georgia Northwestern Technical College. "The new program will train students in die and tool repair. Dies are molds that are used repetitively to make a shape. Based on these continuous cycles, molds and die become worn down and take a highly skilled technician to fix and reshape. This two year program will lead to a technical diploma from GNTC. As the automotive supplier network of companies in Northwest Georgia continues its rigorous development, many of the companies fabricate metal components utilizing stamping presses. The presses contain very precise die mechanisms which produce the metal components manufactured to very strict tolerances. The die mechanisms wear over time and have to be rebuilt by a highly skilled technician. This type of occupational skill is not only needed by an automotive supplier but also by many other metal component manufacturers in our area. GNTC is excited to launch a specific curriculum and training education program addressing this highly needed occupational skill. "There is a huge need and we are excited about how this program will benefit our company," says John Sizemore, STEMCO Rome. The manufacturing industry is a large part of Northwest Georgia and more specifically Rome-Floyd County’s economy. The new program will be located on the Floyd County Campus and will serve students in Floyd, Chattooga and Murray Counties. Georgia Northwestern was approved for the $400,000 plus grant! GNTC applied for a grant from Appalachian Regional Commission allowing the school to upgrade an industrial lab, utilizing industry standard equipment and preparing students for jobs in the Tool and Die Maintenance field. The program will accept 10 students into the program each semester. "The ARC Grant will allow the college to purchase the needed equipment and make the necessary electrical renovations to our Machine Tool Lab to begin training die repair technicians beginning in August of 2017," says Pete McDonald, President of Georgia Northwestern Technical College. "The goal of this new program is to be responsive to the request from area manufacturers by providing die repair training and education to a minimum of 20 students annually.”
GNTC RECEIVED LETTERS OF SUPPORT FROM: • F & P Georgia • Rome Floyd Chamber • Larsen & Shaw • STEMCO Rome
"GNTC will be the only public post secondary school to offer a die maintenance technician program in the state," says Pete McDonald, President of GNTC.

Floyd Against Drugs / Educating Rome
Floyd Against Drugs
Floyd Against Drugs (FAD) is a community organization with a mission to mobilize the entire community to work together and reduce the youth and adult use of drugs, alcohol and tobacco. The strategies behind the organization are to change policy, change perceptions and educate. The organization was first founded in 2000 by Annette Morris, a Floyd County School counselor. Since its founding Floyd Against Drugs has grown and developed into a well known organization in the Greater Rome Metro area. In 2015 the organization was awarded a 5 year federal Drug Free Coalitions Grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Through the grant the organization has grown exponentially including the hiring of an Executive Director, Dan Falcitelli , and allows the organization to focus on underage drinking and youth use of drugs. The grant allows a number of prevention activities found around the community: Sticker Shock Campaign, Positive Social Norm Campaign, Social Hosting Awareness Campaign, Marijauna Education for both youth and adults, Red Ribbon Drug Awareness, Teen Maze and a Drug Drop Event. “We want to see drug usage go down in our youth,” says Angie Robinson, Program Coordinator. “We have seen the numbers even out, but it’s important to our community and the future of our community to see that number decrease.” The organization is dedicated to helping the youth of Rome and Floyd county, and their parents become more educated on the effects of alcohol and drug use. FAD distributes over 17,000 pamphlets of information to Rome City, Floyd County and private schools during Red Ribbon Week for students starting in Kindergarten and up to twelfth grade. "This is all about the kid," says Dan Falcitelli, Executive Driector. "We do this to protect their future and help the parents understand the dangers of alcohol and drugs."
