Economic Development Committee Receives a Briefing on International Paper

T

he Rome Floyd Chamber's Economic Development Committee serves as an advocate for continued growth and prosperity in Rome and Floyd County by creating an awareness of the process of the creation and retention of jobs. To achieve this goal the 2018 Chair of Economic Development Committee, Scott Preston, Leadership Rome XXXIV Citizens First- Synovus, invited Jenna Guzman, Leadership Rome XXXIV and Communications Manager at International Paper to speak and educate committee members about International Paper and their Rome location.

Jenna Guzman, Communications Manager at International Paper, speaks to the Economic Development Committee.

The mill that now houses International Paper was built in 1954 and became part of International Paper in 2012 when Temple-Inland was acquired. International Paper is now one of the largest job providers in the county with over 400 jobs. The Rome mill is a brown paper mill and produces tons of paper per day; this is the equivalent to many miles of paper every day! The paper products that International Paper produces are used by Tyson, Procter & Gamble, Coca-Cola, Clorox and more. While International Paper is the world’s leading producer of paper they are also a leader in corporate citizenship. “International Paper is focused on sustaining the future,” said Ms. Guzman. “We want to continuously improve and help the community we are located in improve as well.” International Paper plants saplings in replace of the trees that are removed, the water that is removed from the Coosa River is returned cleaner than when it was taken and the company is constantly looking for a way to improve emissions as the federal and state regulations change. “International Paper is leading the way with safety, environmental and sustainability processes,” said Ms. Guzman. The employees at International Paper also take time to volunteer with Action Ministries-Rome, partners with United Way and is a part of Georgia Power’s ASPIRE program and many other organizations in the area. The company not only has a great reputation in Rome and Floyd County but also has an impressive reputation around the world. In February of 2018 International Paper was named one of The 2018 World’s Most Ethical Companies® By the Ethisphere Institute for the twelfth year. International Paper focuses on conducting business and running their mills by doing it the IP Way: doing the right thing, in the right ways, for the right reasons, all of the time.

Artagus Newell, Planning Director for the City of Rome, and Tom Couch, President of TLC Consulting, network before the meeting begins.

The Economic Development Committee intently listens and asks questions about International Paper.

“It’s an exciting time at International Paper Rome, and we are so grateful to a community like Rome and Floyd County that focuses on helping businesses grow,” said Ms. Guzman.

YOU HAVE THE POWER! ShopRomeSM WWW.ROMEGA.COM

Dr. John Jackson • Floyd County School System There are thousands of students in Rome and Floyd County that benefit from the positive effects of ShopRomeSM. A percentage of sales tax from a purchase made in Rome and Floyd County is given back to Floyd County and Rome City Schools. The money that has been given to Rome and Floyd County schools helps to make the lives of children in the community better. Dr. John Jackson, Superintendent of Floyd County Schools, sees this first hand every day, and encourages members of the community to ShopRomeSM to help better improve our community. "Because of the support and confidence of Floyd County voters, shopping local means your pennies are making a huge impact right here in the Rome-Floyd Community through ESPLOST," said. Dr. Jackson. "This allows our school system to have the resources necessary to provide the high quality, state-of-the-art facilities our students deserve!"

Michele Rikard • Hardy Realty • LR XXXI Michele Rikard, Hardy Realty, works every day to find the perfect home for future residents of Rome and Floyd County. In many ways, she is the first introduction to ShopRomeSM to new community members. "Having been raised in a local family-owned business, I realize that supporting our local enterprises is not only essential for the prosperity of local businesses but to the well being of our neighbors and friends. Historically, local businesses and relationships have been an essential part of our community's economic lifeblood." Ms. Rikard uses this background and her current career to help promote Rome and Floyd County and ShopRomeSM. "The stronger our local economy is, the more citizens of Rome/Floyd County will thrive and are then able to invest back into the community, kick-starting the cycle again," said Ms. Rikard. "When individual residents or businesses prosper, we see growth in the commercial and residential real estate sectors and vice versa. As an agent, I have a unique opportunity to promote our community as I often meet clients before they've made the commitment to move to Rome." 6 | Momentum

SHOP ROME

Jan Caldwell • Big Time Products • LR XXXV Jan Caldwell, Director of Human Resources at Big Time Products, knows the importance of shopping local. She sees it every day in her position at Big Time Products, the largest supplier of work gloves in the United States. Her career gives her a unique opportunity to see the residents of Rome and how changes in the economy can affect Big Time Products. "Shopping local impacts Big Time Product’s growth simply because the dollars that go right back into our community contributes toward a thriving economy which in turn creates a strong infrastructure and a strong infrastructure is particularly important to our company’s growth," said Jan Caldwell. " Big Time Products heavily depends upon reliable transportation systems to move our products in and out of Rome and we must have excellent communication systems for our business to operate nationally and internationally. We also depend upon smaller businesses to meet some of our basic needs and shopping local helps sustain those businesses." Whether its employees eating at local restaurants, fueling up at gas stations, receiving supplies from PaperPack, having company dry cleaning services handled by Star Cleaners, leasing the property Big Time Products is located on or renting out hotel rooms for out of town guests, Big Time Products is a believer in ShopRomeSM. "Big Time Products has grown substantially since inception and with this growth has come jobs," said Ms. Caldwell. "We would like to recruit and hire people from our own community. In order to attract people stay in Rome or to move into this area to find work, our community must have a strong economy, and I believe ShopRomeSM is where the cycle begins."

Robert Smyth • Coosa Valley Credit Union • Chair of Small Business Action Council • LR XXX Robert Smyth, AVP Business Development/Public Relations at Coosa Valley Credit Union, is intertwined with businesses every day. As a member of the Coosa Valley Credit Union team he works with local businesses in Rome and Floyd County, and Mr. Smyth volunteers his time with the Rome Floyd Chamber as 2018 Chair of Small Business Action Council. The SBAC promotes all of Rome and Floyd County as the Capitol of Northwest Georgia for retail and trade. Mr. Smyth supports small business through education and communication and is responsible for the ShopRomeSM campaign, Business Expo, and Small Business of the Year award. "The SBAC is made up of local business people and owners," said Mr. Smyth. "Each day they struggle with competition from online retailers. Educating the consumer on the impact they can make in their hometown by changing their shopping habits, is one way to compete as well as ensure the future growth of our community. Shopping local benefits everyone from the larger retailer to the familyowned business." As Chair of the SBAC for 2018, Mr. Smyth is focusing on educating the community to help them better understand the impact ShopRomeSM has on everyone. "I think the community needs a better understanding of the impact they have on their hometown when they shop locally," said Mr. Smyth. "Not only will they probably receive better customer service and in most cases an equal or superior product or service, but a large portion of what they spend locally stays in their community fueling the local economy, charities, infrastructure and education. All these combined create a community that they and hopefully their children will want to work and live in."

Joey Beard • Garner & Glover Company • LR XXI Joey Beard, Commercial Lines- Account Executive, interacts with businesses in Rome and Floyd County on a daily basis with his position at Garner & Glover Company, an independent insurance agency. "Garner and Glover is a full-service Agency, meaning we help our clients with Commercial, Personal and Employee Benefits.," said Mr. Beard. "Shopping locally as a retail consumer means that Rome and Floyd County will continue to have and attract thriving, growing businesses which will, in turn, provide a larger client base for companies like Garner and Glover that sell a service." Shopping local helps support all of the businesses in Rome and Floyd County and the impact on Garner and Glover is great. "The impact of ShopRomeSM is twofold for Garner and Glover Co.," said Mr. Beard. "First of all, at Garner and Glover, we think of ourselves as a community partner. Our hope is that all residents of Rome and Floyd County will use a local insurance agency for their home, auto and life insurance rather than going online and supporting a business that has no history or allegiance to our community. Our personal lines department, we value the personal relationships we have with our clients. We have an open door policy for our clients to come by and sit down with one of our account managers to answer any questions you may have about your policy. The second impact is a commercial insurance and employee benefits perspective. If our citizens shop local, it attracts more business and industry to our area, which in turn gives us more opportunity to partner with these businesses to provide all types of insurance."

Jason Willis • Action Ministries Jason Willis, Regional Development Director of Action Ministries, is a Floyd County native and an avid supporter of ShopRomeSM. "Whether it is through the philanthropy of the giver to non-profits like Action Ministries, or the taxes provided to our local governments to better our communities; the bottom line is that the more we Romans stick together the stronger our community can grow," said Mr. Willis. Action Ministries mobilizes the community to help give hope to those who are suffering in poverty. "Without the support of local businesses we could not have ended homelessness for 60 individuals in Rome last year," said Mr. Willis. "Without the support of local business, we could not have provided 25 students aging out of the foster system with counseling and a pathway to a college education in 2017. Without the support of local business, we could not have provided 776,000 meals to 9,500 individuals. You see, we at Action rely on the support of the community and the partnerships with local businesses to fulfill our mission of helping restore hope to the hurting in Rome and Floyd County, and shopping locally helps keep those businesses stay open and continue to support our cause." 7 | Momentum

TAR Awards, sponsored by the Rome Floyd Chamber, were presented at all the high schools in Rome and Floyd County during the month of February. The STAR Awards were founded by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce in 1958, and in 1994 PAGE, was created by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce in order to partner with the Georgia Department of Education to present the STAR recognitions. STAR Awards are presented to a high school senior, who has the highest score on a single test date on the three-part SAT, and the student must be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average. The STAR Student then determines their STAR Teacher by who has been the most influential and instrumental in their academic success. Armuchee High • Jerry Cable • Dr. Donald Bettler
