SUNTRUST / 125 years
Mr. and Mrs. Al Briley with daughters Ansley Briley Saville,Coosa Steel Corporation, and Gena Briley Agnew, Northwest Georgia Regional Cancer Coalition.
125 Years of Building Relationships... Ansley Saville, daughter of Al Briley, recalls that her father came to Rome in 1960, “Our family was in Columbus, GA, at the time. My father was with the 4th National Bank, another Trust Company affiliate. He had attended the Rutgers School of Banking for a Master’s degree in banking. He came to Rome as an Executive Vice-President of First National Bank of Rome (would later become SunTrust), but was eventually in line to take over as President from long-time Rome banker, Claude Booker. When he arrived in Rome, he found an old-timey bank located at the corner of Broad and Second Avenue. Tellers still operated behind caged windows, wore green visors and sleeve protectors and used old-timey cash registers. A large vault occupied a considerable amount of space in the main lobby. His first job in Rome, was to modernize the operations of the bank.” Her father made one of his most significant loans during his first year in Rome. “A young man walked in off the street and asked for a loan to expand his bakery, and the head loan officer at the time turned him down and sent him on his way. My father chased the man down Broad Street, stopped him in the 400 block and asked him to return to the bank for further discussion about the money he needed to expand his business— Parrish Bakery Company,“ she recalls. That young bakery owner turned out to be Vernon Grizzard, and the loan that Al Briley was able to secure provided the money for his expansion, but also formed a friendship between the two men. Al Briley and Vernon Grizzard later partnered to purchase Southeastern Mills. Mr. Briley was bank President when a significant move was made to construct a new building on Second Avenue. “My father and Rome architect, Doyle Harvey worked together to design that bank. It was modeled after the Governor’s mansion in Virginia, as Williamsburg décor was all the rage in those days; but inside, the bank was a totally modern, banking facility, unlike any other in the region. The First National Bank of Rome opened the new location in 1971. Mr. Briley was also President when the bank’s first branch was opened in West Rome. He commissioned Rome artist, Mac Marshall to design a sculpture of an old gold miner. That statue, locally known as “Mr. Magillacutty” became a Rome landmark, but it also signified that the bank was in West Rome “mining for gold.”

SUNTRUST / 125 YEARS
...SunTrust Celebrates When talking with John Bishop about banking and wealth management, you know right away how much he cares about the clients and the relationships he has developed during his tenure with SunTrust. "I've been in this business since 1992," says Bishop, a Private Financial Advisor with SunTrust Investment Services, Inc., and Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Committee Chairman. "The clients I helped when I first started now have children and in some cases grandchildren and I am honored to help them to also plan for their financial future." The community and relationships that thrive here are what make SunTrust successful. SunTrust offers up-to-the minute technology required to serve their customers well. One new product advancement is applying for loans online. LightStream, the online lending division of SunTrust, can provide good-credit applicants up to $100,000 in unsecured, fixed rate financing-with no fees-for practically any purpose... autos to adoptions, home improvements to preK-12 private school tuition. People in all 50 states apply online through their PC, tablet or Smartphone and receive approvals quickly during business hours.
Funds are deposited directly into the client's bank account, as soon as the day they apply, when all conditions are met. Clients are free to pay for any product or service associated with a loan purpose. For example, financing for a home improvement project can cover not only construction, but also new appliances, room finishes and even furnishings. "SunTrust is focused on helping our clients and community achieve financial confidence," says Bishop. In January 2016, SunTrust launched a movement, onUp (short for onward and upward) to help clients move from financial stress to confidence. So far, more than 825,000 individuals have taken a step to improve their financial confidence at www.onUp.com. In addition to tracking participants, the website provides individuals information and tools on a variety of topics, including budgeting and creating a financial plan. When a person's future and money are involved trust is a large factor in deciding where to bank. SunTrust values their banking relationships and continues to work to maintain trust and stay involved in the community. "The Chamber is the backbone of the community" says Bishop. He adds, "I continually connect with people through the Chamber and stay focused on the goal of economic prosperity for all Rome and Floyd County citizens."
SunTrust Bank continues to support the Chamber through their membership and their annual investment in Partners in Prosperity III. January 2017 • Momentum • 9

GROWING ROME / FP-Pigments
FP - Pigments Bringing More Jobs to Rome
FP-Pigments opened its first American plant in Rome and the plant is once again growing. The Finnish company produces opacity pigments used in paper, plastic, board, paints and coatings. The fine white pigment is created in West Rome at the FP-Pigments plant before it is shipped to FP’s customers to use in making consumer product and more. In 2010 FP-Pigments made a $20 million dollar investment when the company decided to open the Rome location. Now, after more than 10% growth in sales in 2016 and the addition of a new packaging operation resulted in a busy year for the FP- Pigments plant. Mr. Gerhard Scherer shared the news of the company’s decision to add five new positions to their staff to help manage the demand of product. The addition of staff will take place in 2017 and will raise the staff count from 18 to 23.

I N N OVAT I O N / Rome City Brewing
Rome City Brewing Co. Bringing New Faces to Brewhouse Rome City Brewing was an idea, long before the name and the partner emerged for, Jay Shell, Floyd County School Board Member, Owner of Brewhouse Music & Grill and participant of last year's annual InterCity Leadership visit. Mr. Shell opened Brewhouse Music and Grill with the intention of eventually turning it into a brew pub- a pub that brews its own craft beer in house. It was all about timing: building the Brewhouse brand and finding the right partner. Dr. Trent Prault, Harbin Clinic Vascular Surgeon, was the perfect partner to take on such an adventure Dr. Prault had been experimenting with home brewing for years and when Mr. Jay Shell asked him to become his partner he jumped on board. A short time later Mr. Shell and Dr. Prault were making plans to bring in their own microbrewery, able to produce 120 gallons once or twice a week, to Brewhouse Music & Grill. Months later and Rome City Brewing is up and running. The microbrewery is stationed in Brewhouse Music & Grill where customers can see exactly how their beer is made and watch it being brewed. The microbrewey is currently brewing five different beers exclusive to Rome: Short Blonde Ale, Clocktower IPA, Broadstreet Wheat, Downtown Brown and their new seasonal flavor Cranberry Broad Street Wheat. The process of a brewing day taking anywhere from six to eight hours. “All our craft beers revolve around Rome,” says Dr. Trent Prault. The addition of the microbrewery means many changes around Brewhouse including a new logo and a new name. This month, Brewhouse and Rome City Brewing will begin a new journey as the names merge as Rome City Brewing Company at the Brewhouse Grill. An exciting time for Mr. Jay Shell and Dr. Trent Prault as they work on growing the business organically, with hopes of eventually distributing the craft beer to other locations. The new microbrewery isn’t just attracting locals to Brewhouse Music & Grill it is also bringing in tourists. The craft beer industry has become somewhat of a phenomenon in the past few years. It has been attracting tourist to Athens, GA., Asheville, NC., Chattanooga, TN. now Rome, GA. has been added to the list of Brew Pubs around the country. “You can’t get these beers anywhere else, they are unique to Rome,” says Jay Shell.

MEET OUR AMBASSADORS
Get to know... Moriah Medina 1. What is the best part of being an ambassador? Professionally, the ambassadors have opened many doors to gaining customers and building our business. Personally, the ambassador program has led to quite a few good friendships and has really given me more confidence in my profession. 2. What has been your favorite Chamber event this past year? I have been extremely lucky to have been chosen for Leadership Rome this year and every special event we have done together has been amazing. We went on an overnight retreat (which was quite a luxury considering I have a one year old at home) and once a month we get to learn about different aspects of Rome and Floyd County. It has really connected me to Rome and taught me about the amazing things this community has to offer.
