Stories to Tell
Many Great Stories to be told If the buildings and landscapes could talk, what a story would be told. Greater Shepparton has an amazing depth of history full of intrigue, bravery, survival and charm. Heritage Centres located in Shepparton, Mooroopna, Murchison, Tatura and Merrigum are filled with priceless gems, from the history of the World War internment camps scattered throughout the Murchison and Tatura regions, the history of irrigation, farming and medical procedures of the past. Our museums will engage, charm and enlighten you. The site of the historic river crossing of McGuires Punt over the Goulburn is the location of the Shepparton Heritage Museum. Also home to the Shepparton family history group and the “Lost Shepparton” shop, the museum gives an insight into how Shepparton used to be and the importance of rivers to our local towns. Tatura was home of the Victoria Cross recipient Private Robert Mactier and the memorial gardens honouring him. Private Mactier won the only Victoria Cross for his battalion but made the ultimate sacrifice on 1 September 1918 at Mont St Quentin, France. Not only does Tatura have a depth of history from World War I but a museum filled with artefacts pertinent to World War II and the internment camps that housed German and Italian internees throughout the area. The museum hosts an amazing array of memorabilia showing what life was like in the camps. The Merrigum museum is open by appointment and also hosts an annual open day with demonstrations of working farm machinery and household appliances — come along and make your own butter and don’t forget to try some of the amazing damper straight out of the camp fire. Delicious! The famous Murchison Meteorite fell out of the skies over the region in September 1969. Known and treasured internationally, the meteorite has over 70 amino acids of which only 19 have been identified as visitshepparton.com.au

Located on the banks of the Goulburn River, the wide streetscapes provide a relaxed atmosphere, with a beauty and depth of history just waiting to be discovered.
