The Publisher’s Blog s the 2014 season winds down, there seems to be a lot of dismal buzz in the press about the state of golf and its future. But is it really all doom and gloom? Golf courses had been closing at an average rate of 100 per year (157 in 2011) and others are being sold for ridiculously low amounts of money. Since around 2000, shortly after Tiger came on the scene, more golfers began leaving the sport than those who were taking it up. The number of frequent golfers (golfers that play more than 12 times a year) has dropped by one third in recent years. Why, you ask? Some people chalk it up to the decline in the economy versus the cost to play the game. Others point to the amount of time it takes to play, that they are too busy, that they have less leisure time due to their jobs. family commitments and more work needed to get done around the house. While others just feel it is too difficult a game to play. They get frustrated and quit. This was something I felt was far reaching until I recently played with someone who just returned to the game after a five year hiatus having quit playing because he was too frustrated. First of all, this “sky is falling” attitude toward the game of golf is precipitated by the golf equipment industry. Sales are down and they’re in a panic. Secondly, the industry is going through a correction, one they’d prefer not to admit. Tiger Woods created a golf frenzy which resulted in an over satuation of golf courses being built. According the the National Golf Foundation, 4,500 courses opened between 1986 and 2005. Since, 2006, 643 courses have closed. That equates to less than 5 percent of the 14,564 golf courses in the U.S. Mark King, President of Adidas Group North America, which owns TaylorMade, Adams, Reebok, among others, wants to grow the game by enlarging the cup size to 15 inches. He thinks it will be more fun for those entering the game. Please! It’s programs like the USGA’s Drive, Pitch and Putt competiton, that was debuted at The Masters this year, that will get young people excited about the game. The golf industry has to accept that not every person will take up the game of golf just as not everyone plays soccer. The sky is not falling, it’s just a little cloudy.

WHY TIGER WOODS IS GREATEST GOLFER WH PLAYED THE GAME! hen I think of the greatest athletes of all time, names come to my mind, not for the records they hold, but for what they may have brought to their sport at the time they played. Bo Jackson, Deion Sanders, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Bruce Lee, Cheryl Miller, Bobby Orr, Martina Navratilova, Carl Lewis, Dan Gable, Jackie Robinson, to name a few, have all had accomplishments that may never be be surpassed again. Over the years, Tiger Woods has developed problems both voluntarily (his personal life) and involuntarily. Back in 1999 and 2000, he was regarded by his peers as a “freak of nature” for the number of tournaments he was winning. Michael Campbell was quoted as saying, “I mean Tiger is so phenomenal it's frightening. The only way we can defeat Tiger is for him to make mistakes.” When you’ve earned that kind of respect (and fear) from your peers, you’re doing something in your sport that has never been seen

before. Heck, in June 2008, he won a US Open at Torry Pines playing an 18 hole playoff with two stress fractures of the left tibia! Even his challenger, Rocco Mediate, was in awe of how he could play with such an injury. Eight days later, he has reconstructive surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, and to repair cartilage damage. This is where involuntary could sideline Tiger from his quest to beat Jack Nicklaus’ Majors record - his injuries. As a freshman at Stanford, Tiger had surgery to remove two benign tumors and scar tissue in his left knee. In December

IS STILL THE HO EVER By Jamie Gacos 2002, Tiger had surgery to remove fluid inside and around the anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee. July 2007, he then ruptures the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee after taking a misstep while running on a golf course. He wins five of the last six tournaments he plays, including the PGA Championship. In April 2008, two days after his runner-up finish at the Masters, Tiger has athroscopic surgery on his left knee to repair cartilage damage. Six months after beating Rocco Mediate in a playoff at the U.S. Open, Tiger ruptures the Achilles' tendon in his right leg. In May 2010, Tiger withdraws on the seventh hole of the final round at The Players Championship with what he fears is a bulging disk. He later says it was inflammation of a joint in his neck. He doesn't miss a start, returning a month later at the Memorial. In April 2011, Tiger reveals that he has a minor sprain of the medial collateral ligaments in his left 2014 ISSUE 3
knee and minor strain of his left Achilles that he suffered at The Masters earlier that month. In March 2012, Tiger withdraws from the final round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral reinjuring his left Achilles. The next June, Tiger injures his left elbow at the 2013 Players Championship. Then in August, at Liberty National, Tiger falls to the ground in pain due to back problems but still finishes in 2nd place. Then finally, in April of this year, Tiger underwent surgery to correct a pinched nerve in his back, a procedure that would cause him to miss both the Masters and the U.S. Open only ot reaggravate his back at the WGCBridgestone Invitational. So, there you have it. Most athletes would have hung up their cleats, involuntarily, long ago. Not Tiger! So, the question remains. Needing just 5 more Major victories, will Tiger surpass Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 Major wins? Soon to be 39 years old, probably not. But then again, he’s Tiger Woods, a freak of nature! TIGER WOODS’ ACCOMPLISHMENTS PGA TOUR CAREER VICTORIES: 79. Trails only Sam Snead (82) MAJOR CHAMPIONSHIP WINS: 14. PUBLISHER’S PICKS Products We Know You’ll Like! (Or We Won’t Write About Them)
lthough summer isn’t over and the Fall season is still weeks away, the Christmas season will be here before we know it. I’m not trying to rush things as I dislike the cold as much as the next guy, but it’s never too early to be thinking about some of the items your favorite golfer might enjoy getting under the tree! Here are a couple of items I have written about in the past that are worth featuring again:
A
LINKS AND LUXURY ESN WR67 AND WR72 I am a huge proponent of speeding up play on the golf course. It irks me when I get behind golfers who not only do not keep up with the group in front of them, but they conduct themselves as if they are the only ones out on the course. They will hit a ball, get back into their cart and then drive ten yards for the next person in the cart to hit their ball. I realize that nothing less than a little kick in their a** could cure their problem, however, there are devices that are now approved for play, by the USGA, that will speed up play so there are fewer knuckleheads on the golf course. Much of the time spent on the course is determining yardages from where your ball lies. Yardage markers with information on distances to the front, middle and back of the grees are usually placed on sprinkler heads throughout the fairways. However, since many golfers are often not in the fairway, a good amount of time is taken locating a yardage marker, counting off the paces to their ball, and then striking their ball which ultimately adds time to their round and yours. For years, distance finders became the go to device for shooting the flag for 16

exact distances. I, for one, always relied on my distance finder which I found saved me time from locating yardage markers and pacing off the distance in order to speed up play. Then came the GPS watch. I road tested the Garmin when it first came out and it quickly became my “fifteenth club.” The only time I looked at a yardage marker was to check the accuracy of my Garmin. My only complaint with the Garmin was its short battery life and occasional loss of connection with the satellites. About a year later, I stumbled upon a new, unknown branded GPS watch by a company named ESN (Express Satellite Navigation) which made the WR67. The WR67 claimed to connect to more satellites (67) and provide longer battery life that it’s competition (which, at that time, was the Garmin). Not only did it connect to the satellites quickly and stay connected throughout the round, there was still 75% battery life remaing at the end of the round compared to almost none with the Garmin. The WR67 also had features that the Garmin did not have such as the ability to set your tee time on the watch which will activate the GPS at that precise time. It also provides you with the total time your round took once you’ve turned off the device at the completion of your round. The course mapping on the WR67 is provided by iGolf, a company that maps golf courses for a number of handheld distance measuring devices. I was playing

Liberty National, in Jersey City, and found that the distances the WR67 provided me on hole 18 were inaccurate primarily due to a redesign of the hole. I sent emails both to iGolf (who got back to me right away and provided me with an update within a couple of days) and to Garmin, who never got back to me, for three years now and counting. Earlier this year, ESN decided to pick it up a few notches by releasing the WR72 (72 satellites), a luxury GPS watch designed to be worn as an everyday piece of jewelry. The WR72 comes in both polished and brushed titanium with an anti-reflective crystal, stainless steel buttons, leather band from Hadley Roma, and a smooth, curved face. The WR72 comes with the same great technology as the WR67. The only indication that it is used for golf is by the tee flag image on the casing. Other than that, it makes a rich, classy presentation that I guarantee your favorite golfer will be thrilled to wear. The reason you might never have heard of ESN is due to a licensing agreement between Bushnell and ESN who provides the technology to Bushnell for their watches. So, if you own a already Bushnell watch, you also won an ESN. The WR67 is available on their website, www.golfesn.com for only $149.99 as is the WR72 which is priced at $249.99 for the polished titanium model and $269.99 for the brushed titanium. All three watches come with a 2 year warranty. They have great customer service and truly value their customers. Do you think I like this product? Maybe just a little. E 2014 ISSUE 3
AFFORDABLE GOLF TEE TIME GOLF PASS In my Publisher’s Blog, I mention that one of the reasons why golf partipation has declined in recent years is due to the downturn in the economy versus the cost to play. More golf courses are allowing companies like GolfNow to sell their tee times at a reduced rate in order to keep the register ringing. However, vehicles like GolfNow charge a fee to use their service which counters the purpose for buying discount tee times. Tee Time Golf Pass, Northeast Edition, is one of golf's largest and most respected discount passbooks since 1992. It contains huge discounts at your favorite local courses plus hundreds of others in the region and at destination areas. The book has 153 participating courses in NJ, NY, CT and Eastern PA. Beautiful Scenery and Great Golf!
Ulster County, New York By Rick Remsnyder olf courses in Ulster County certainly deserved a break with the weather this year after a mostly unprecedented winter of snow and cold. So I’m happy to report that the weather has been sensational this summer, particularly during weekends when traffic at our dozen public courses was the busiest. There were plenty of warm days and little rain. Some of our courses had severe flooding and tree damage from Hurricane Irene three years ago, but they all bounced back amazingly well. The resiliency of the owners and their workers was evident at courses such as New Paltz Golf Course, which during the worst of it had water covering much of the course. But the golf course superintendents at New Paltz and all the other courses did a terrific job bringing their courses back to life. One of the truly amazing success stories is what has happened in Saugerties with the course built by Dr. Anthony Bacchi. Lazy Swan Golf and Country Club Village expanded from nine holes to 18 holes in spring of 2012 and enjoyed a tremendous year, according to golf pro Steve Simone. Bacchi took a chance when he opened a golf course and restaurant in 2005 amid rather unsettling economic times. While courses around the country were closing, Bacchi had a vision that if he built a quality product people would come. His risk has paid off handsomely. In a short time, Lazy Swan has established itself as a major player in the golf business. Golfers from the New York metropolitan area, New Jersey, Connecticut and Albany have found the course to be well-groomed and challenging and the staff to be very efficient and courteous. Rondout Golf Club, a scenic 18-hole semi-private course in Accord, is known for its excellent conditioning. Apple Greens Golf Course in Highland is always busy, as the 27-hole layout, which is located just five minutes from the New Paltz exit on the New York State Thruway, continues to attract golfers from New York City and central and northern New Jersey who don't mind driving more than an hour because there is no waiting and a quick pace of play. Acclaimed golf course architect Robert Trent Jones designed the Fallsview Golf Course at the Honor’s Haven Resort and Spa in Ellenville, which has been the site of numerous professional and amateur tournaments. The courses are so diverse that visitors and locals alike never become bored playing golf here. If a golfer likes mountain resort courses, he or she will be thrilled golfing at the Fallsview at the Honor's Haven, the Hudson Valley Resort and Spa in Kerhonkson and the Mohonk Mountain House course in New Paltz. There's great risk-reward potential when one tees it up at Rondout Golf Club, and Apple Greens Golf Course is cut right out of an apple orchard. We’re blessed to have so many great golf courses in our midst. For those who haven’t played them, they’re still open until the snow flies.

olling Greens Golf Club is a public golf course situated minutes north of Route 80 off of Route 15. This facility is open all year, accepts golf outings, members and the general public. The golf course is very difficult for one so short. It is relatively flat and open with contoured fairways and well-bunkered greens. A favorite is our 180-yards, par-3 ninth, featuring a tough shot over water and a well-bunkered green.

asking Ridge Country Club, located in Somerset County, is recognized for its eighteen holes of plush fairways and smooth greens, but something you may not be aware of is their all-new revitalized restaurant. Last November, the clubhouse restaurant came under new management by a catering company called by Alex Feindt Delicious Heights. Opened by two brothers, Ralph and Dominic Acquaviva with partner Alex Rubunstein, they began with a deli in Berkeley Heights. Several years of success allowed them to open their first restaurant in Berkeley Heights and another soon after in Bedminster just three years ago. Their unique menu and delectable food has kept them climbing the food chain, and after a decade since inception their third restaurant entitled, Delicious Heights Outpost, has arrived at Basking Ridge Country Club. Delicious Heights wanted to create the most enjoyable eating experience possible and hit the ground running! The previous restaurant was stripped down and renovated including changes such as new floors, tables, eleven new televisions, and completely redoing the inside and outside bar areas. As the outside patio overlooks the eighteenth hole, the players now walk into a flourishing scenery of beach umbrellas and a great bar area where they can relax as their rounds come to a close. The main restaurant has a sophisticated rustic wine cellar feel to it with a serene ambiance. It isn’t hard to feel right at home with the overly friendly staff and unique environment. The members have really taken to the new menu and are raving about how much they love the food with items such as, the Tuscan Eggplant Sandwich, or the Tiramisu Cheesecake. Open seven days a week, from 11am-1am, it can seat nearly 300 people. General Manager, Walter Espinosa, says business ranges about 50/50 between members and guests. Every Thursday through Saturday you can enjoy live bands posted on the patio playing an array of music genres. BRCC and DH Outpost are even taking strides to hold new events for people of all ages. This October 2nd, they will be hosting their own version of Octoberfest. It will be a one-day event open to the public with German style music and food. In addition to the restaurant changes, Delicious Heights has repainted, furnished, and carpeted the entire upstairs banquet area and ballroom. The banquet area is comprised of two rooms for smaller private parties and weddings with groups of thirty to ninety, and includes a magnificent view of the eighteenth hole. The ballroom area is for larger weddings and meetings handling groups of nearly 230 people and has a great view of hole number one off to the left. With all of these fantastic changes to the clubhouse, DH also has an enormous tent that is available ten months out of the year. The tent overlooks the practice facility and even has an amazing restroom facility just outside. The wonderful enhancements to BRCC, by Delicious Heights, has truly taken the club to another level of customer satisfaction by creating an environment with all Alex Feindt is a free lance writer and frequent contributer to Great Golf Magazine. of the essentials for a great time.
